  2. Sam at Armadillo Mining asked me to get the word out about the unlawful shutdown of motorized placer mining in Oregon. Unfortunately the miners fighting this illegal ban are heavily out-gunned by various environmental groups. The politics of all this are too complicated for my lizard brain, but I hope it's ok to pass the info along. If not, delete this post. Sam and the others at Armadillo are good people, and the Bohmkers are legends in the prospecting community out here. Just want to help them continue their heritage. A battle this big gets expensive real fast, and they had the idea to have a raffle to help with the legal costs. It's a small group of miners vs. the state, enviros, and miles of red tape and loopholes. You can help them out and have a chance to win something yourself with this raffle. Top prize is a half pound of GOLD, they will also be giving away a metal detector, prospecting equipment, and you don't even have to show up to the drawing to win. I think it's a good cause and the fact that you can win something for your support is a good angle for them. Check out the attached flyer and link for the details. 3. You are welcome Brian. These pouches are definitely solid and made specific for metal detecting here in the USA. Not only specific for metal detecting but for the type of detecting you do be it beach, Relic or coin even gold. I just hope none of those small metal objects you were loosing were gold colored. 4. Terry, thank you for posting about your pouch. My trash pouch, which I have been using for about 6 years has developed many small holes. I keep dropping very small metallic objects so I just ordered a solid bottom pouch on ebay. I don't mind spending the extra money when I know the product is solid. Thanks again, Brian.

  6. The "golden" state. Sad indeed.Ive been a member of AMRA since the beginning. Most where optimistic this was going to go in our favor...I wasnt. We are dealing with ideology. All I have to say is, we all know right from wrong. Let your conscience guide you, but realize the risk.

  7. Heres just a thought that popped in my head. Trail cams are pretty cheap nowadays. When leaving expensive equipment, maybe set one up....then again, damn tweakers may steal that too.

  8. A company called Omega Mill makes the best detector pouches I have seen yet. They actually make more than one model and in various colors even camo. The one I have is called the Relic elite. It is fairly large, has a loop for a probe on the side a outside, a zippered pocket and velcro pocket on the outside and inside has about 3 separate areas for finds and a fishnet type bottom so dirt can fall out. They make a slightly different one for the beach and and another one for coin that also has a loop for your digger. I know Gerry of Gerrys Detectors sells them as well as on Amazon and Ebay. Also a adjustable belt is attached with plastic buckles http://omegamill.weebly.com/store/c1/Featured_Products.html Terry

  9. I noticed while air testing that even tiny nuggets can be heard much farther from the coil when wearing my gold wedding band so now I always wear my ring while detecting!

  10. Sad thing too is that the people pushing to ban it have never done it so they really really have no clue. I think they should at least allow small dredges of say 4" or less if they want to prevent large scale dredging. That would at least allow for "hobby" dredging and have minimal environmental impact if any.

  11. Roughwater, i know what you mean. I have been buying and selling on line for years now and for the most part the deals went well. But there are getting to be Far Too many scammers these days. One good thing is using Pay Pal. At least i have their guarantee of receiving the item. And yea Oregon isn't a bad place to call home.

  12. Just make sure it's not the old original Gold Bug from the 80"s. The way you can tell is the old model has just knobs, no screen. The Newer gold bug has the digital screen/controls. The original could work but much better to have the newer. If you want to go old school with knobs get the gold bug II as it's great for small gold and much better than the original gold bug but may be hard to find for under 500 dollars.

  13. It is a shame, but I'm grateful for the time I spent dredging with my family and friends.

  14. I can do as well with any of them. My default recommendation for beginner nugget hunters is the Gold Bug Pro. Why? It has all the features required for VLF nugget detecting and is one of the most popular well proven machines ever sold for the task, with dealer support everywhere. It is just a really safe choice. I highly recommend not obsessing over VLF performance when looking at 13 - 19 kHz detectors. It is hair splitting. Just look hard at what you intend to use the detector for and make the choice based on the feature list. Steve's Guide To Gold Nugget Detectors

  15. That's my favorite scoop. Flat edges are better for scraping bedrock, and gold settles better in low points along the edges. There are even tiny riffles for panning in a puddle. I believe they are made by the Blue Bowl people at Pioneer Mining http://www.pioneermining.com/cart/prospecting_tools/scoop

  16. Jim I'm sorry to say what ever I say is not going to make it better. It's not so much the cost but it was yours. It's way the world is now and that's if you want it then don't put it down. Chuck PS I have a good engine that is a blower. It needs a gas tank and if you want to make a vac I'll ship free to you. You would have to mount it on a bucket.

  17. Thought this was a good tip on using a detector like the GMT in conjunction with traditional techniques. Just need a machine that can track black sand to locate a paystreak, mark the deposit with stakes and start processing material. Horrendous 144p resolution (filmed with potato) but info is solid!

  18. Ya know I been reading a lot of Steve's stuff for a long time before I found this forum and the conclusion I have come to is this..... Steve is a purdy dang smart you feller.... I am glad to have found this forum I sincerely believe it to be one of the best.... Thank you Steve for all your hard work and the sharing of it with all of us.... kudos to ya.

  19. Target masking is target masking, and smaller targets are easier to mask. Fast machines do a better job of separating closely spaced targets and the smaller the coil the better. No matter how you cut it however detectors average all the targets under the coil at the same time, and shallow targets override deep targets. Ferrous targets, even small ones, produce very strong signals, which easily swamp the much weaker gold signals. If you want to have fun take a typical micro jewelry target like an ear ring (or small gold nugget). Now take a couple common trash items like a hair pin or small rusty nail or wire, and bury next to the small gold item and see just how easy it is to mask the item. Most tests like this assume a flat plane but real world is items at different levels. So try deeper gold next to shallower ferrous item. The reality is with the best detector and best operators a large percentage and possibly even a majority of the good targets are completely masked and cannot be found. People do not know what they are missing because they can't find it. The only solution - dig everything. In nugget detecting it goes like this. Dig everything unless in very trashy locations. Then use a good VLF to cherry pick. If cherry picking turns up a nugget, switch back to digging everything where the nugget was found. Also, lower gain may be better as making the coil footprint smaller means fewer items in the target matrix at the same time. You may want to try and sanitize (dig everything) in a 10' x 20' area just to experiment and verify your thoughts as to what may or may not be lurking. Beneath The Mask by Thomas Dankowski

  20. Been too busy during the day light hours to swing a detector so I channeled my energy in to making a couple of new picks in the evenings in my and my neighbors garage. My neighbor is a welder by trade and has all the fun stuff...plasma this and MIG that (a good neighbor to have)! He did the welding and I designed them and hand fit the handles. I used 1/4" AR-400 steel and Ash and Hickory for the handles.... Now I have to get out and see if they can take some abuse. I think the AR-400 should hold up well. They are both 11" long from tip to scraping end and 5" wide at the scraping end. Handles are 26" and 30" long. Both less than 3lbs. Dean

  21. Some pics of my picks made out of 4x4 leafs I usually make about 10 at a time and the lucky few get to own them. I use 1m long hickory handles and the head is 450 long. They are only for real men who need to dig deeeep holes.
