  2. I posted earlier in the summer about a new spot that I was using the Monster and my Puffer drywasher at; well, I went ahead and claimed it so I could have a place to go play all the time? The process was a great learning experience, and the guys at our local BLM were really helpful to a newbie like me! I finally got the quarter mile of brush, downed trees and rocks cleared so now I can get in there with my side x side....a bit gnarly still, but doable. I initially attacked the old timers stackings...here’s one that was a screamer in a small depression, seen to the left of the Monster in 2nd pic: I continued to move rocks, detect, then drywash.....here’s the area now, and a sample of a good day’s detecting: I explored other areas of the bench, and Woo Hoo, got my biggest piece....a whopping .43g lol! It was almost 5” deep and pretty faint...pic doesn’t look that deep, but it was: Here’s one scraping/dig hole that had 6 pieces in it! Good thing I kept checking it, for sure: If you zoom on the scoop you can see all them little babies? So the pup and I have been having a fun summer.....nice utv rides along the creek and in the pines, picnic lunches at the claim, and I’m finding a bit of gold while she’s chasing chipmunks all day! Life is good??⛏

  7. Gents -- I totally agree with Chase; when they are having these pieces of shafts made, the tolerances have to be really tight for a telescoping shaft system to not have wobble, OR -- you have to have really good cam locks. And since it's hard to get suppliers to build components to really tight tolerances, these issues are cropping up. I am thinking of building some carbon-fiber shafts for the Equinox. I plan to start out with just lower rods -- mainly for people who want an extra shaft, as the accessory coils become available. I terms of progress on this, I am at the stage of completing the design for the lower portion of the rod where the coil attaches, and getting bids on the price to machine these pieces. At that point (soon), I will build a prototype lower rod for myself, which will fit into the Minelab middle rod. Once I have a good prototype, I will likely begin to offer those for sale. Then, from there, I may consider other options -- a middle rod, to go with the lower (and some type of good clamping/cam-lock system to attach them); possibly a lower and middle rod as one piece, that would fit into the Minelab upper; OR, possibly an upper and middle rod combined into a one-piece...this option might help for those having the "wobbly rod" issue. Anyway, these are just ideas I'm working on putting into action; meanwhile -- didn't mean to thread-jack...I just thought this was at least peripherally pertinent to mention here. The electrical tape idea seems like a good "quick fix." A big problem with the design, aside from the somewhat "iffy" cam locks, and the apparently "iffy" QC by whoever is making Minelabs rods, is this...if you remove the handle/control box, what you will find is there is a little "nipple" at the bottom of the handle that fits into a hole in the upper rod. This is likely so that the handle/control box cannot rotate/spin. BUT -- the problem is, that "nipple" is only a few inches above the upper cam lock -- and it sticks far enough into the upper rod that you cannot make a middle rod any longer than the current middle rod -- the length of the middle rod is in other words LIMITED by the position of that "nipple." A much longer middle rod, that could insert much farther into the upper rod, would -- as Alluminati mentioned -- be beneficial, as the farther into a rod that another rod can be inserted, the more you cut down on the "slop." And that's part of the problem there at that upper cam lock -- they couldn't build the middle rod any longer, because the distance it can be inserted into the upper rod is limited by that "nipple" on the control box handle. 12. Chase -- I agree with you. And further, there is of course the same issue (some manufacturing variation) on the OD of the CF tubes from my supplier. Tolerance is supposed to be +/- .1 mm, but with the CTX lower rods I build, I have to check each tube individually with a micrometer, to hold them to that tolerance... But yes, what you are saying as a "potential issue" is a part of why I have been hesitant to attempt any production of Equinox rods. As I understand it though, with most of the "wobble" issues occurring at the UPPER cam lock, I have decided that I am willing to give it a shot, starting out with lower rods. As I said, I think the length of the Minelab middle rod being necessarily limited by that "handle nipple" is part of the issue. As Alluminati said, the longer the portion of one rod that is available to be inserted into the next rod, the less "wobble" or "slop" you should have. Length matters, LOL! And from that perspective, I feel confident enough that making a lower rod, with a little extra length to it, should work out reasonably well; I just need to make sure I hold my supplier to tight tolerances, and hope Minelab now does the same! ? 18. Here are a few quick photos of the latest 24K victim. This fine specimen was in some mineralized ground and had some serious iron staining. Comes in at 22 grams = 2/3 ozt, but not sure on the amount of gold yet. Only about 7" depth and found with the 6" concentric coil on the new White's 24K. I'll try to get it cleaned up next week and post some more pictures as I think this one will be a beauty when done. This is my favorite piece so far with the 24K.

  20. You say that the GB II being too sensitive, No offense meant but this is where the skill of the user comes in to play As in not being scared to turn down the Gain, Any of these High KHZ machines can be classed as "Too Sensitive", Most folks just want to run them maxed out to get the depth out of them, From what you are describing I would say that it might be helpful for you to practice running the GB II at a reduced gain just to get an Idea just what exactly is possible from running these machines at reduced settings, But because it is a VLF/LF people tend to push them too hard. The thing is a VLF will loose a lot less depth than most people Imagine by running a reduced gain setting but the benefit of running them this way has many positive benefits, 1) it will stop the machine getting over loaded with signals, 2) It will help with ID'ing targets between the junk, 3) It will cut down Ground Noise and help the machine Ground Balance better allowing it to run smoother. and the list goes on. I would go as far as to say that in most cases that these machines are "Not" sensitive enough, I would rather have the GB II with the ability to be able to run so hot and have the option to back it off or reduce the gain than be out in the field with nothing in reserve. And just because at times we can run these machine up in the boost zone does not always make it the right thing to do, Most people practice with their Machines running close to MAX settings or above but not many folks if at all practice running their machines at reduced settings Which leads people to live in fear of having to turn down their Gain, hope that helps, John.

  22. The first forum I ever frequented was the Alaska Gold Forum hosted by Jim Foley. After many years the forum appears to have shut down permanently, though a replacement format is in the works. I just got this email from Jim Foley: "Subject: Forums Down Permanently" "Email is the only way I have of communicating about the forums. As I expected and told everyone some time ago, something strange has happened at Best Boards whereby the owner could not be contacted and no one seems to know what happened to him. Consequently, with no one at the helm the boards would go down at some point. This is that point. Now there is only a message that the account has been suspended when anyone tries to access the forums. I am sending this email to everyone I have an email address for, which is not everyone registered on the forums. So, if you will, please spread the word that the forums are down, I know about it and they will not ever come back as they were. I am actively working to find, download and publish new forums. They will not have the same look , but will be fully operational and easy to use because I will make sure that any forum format I choose will be the best available. Please spread the word to anyone you have contact information for. I will send another email to this email list with a link to the new forums once I have new forums online. I hope to see you all online again in the very near future. _____________________________ James Foley Administrator Alaska Gold Forum"

  23. I hit a couple more permissions on the street I've been working for the last week and half. They did not fail to produce enough finds to keep the hunt interesting all day long. I was using my 800, which made it back from Minelab in 11 days after needing to be replaced. To be honest, I couldn't tell a bit of difference from it and the 600 I was using while the 800 was being replaced. The Nox was made for this type of hunting, tone break ability along with being able to adjust the tones to make the higher conductors really jump out. Couple that with being able to swing relatively fast and still hear the good stuff makes this machine a permission slayer. The permissions have been good to me this month, 1 Walker...3 Washington quarters....11 Rosies....75 Wheats I'm able to cover the yards twice in different directions in less time than I could if I was swinging the FBS machines. Anyway, I'm absolutely sold on the machine ? My settings: Sensitivity....18-20 Recovery speed.....6 Iron Bias.....0 2 Tones Ground Balance....0 Tone Break at 21 Pitch....-9 to 21 Pitch at 1 22+ Pitch set to 25 Full Volume on both tones

  25. Steve, the amphibians I had and used on the ATX were very loud... at first... they were “blow your ears off” loud on the ATX but quickly leaked water and became very quiet, so I sent them back to the USA... (pita) get my second set, within a couple water sessions same thing... sent back to USA (mega PITA)... anywho this went on until I just ended up selling them after they came back one time. i have a couple mates who’ve had these and they went quiet so I ended up opening one of them to find the piezos corroded, all the hot glue (or whatever it was) falling off, wiring corroded... just the poorest quality. if these are just amphibians with an equinox connector then STAY AWAY. The knob on the side introduces more potential failure too for no good reason...

  30. I will revisit this thread in the coming weeks. I was doing a comparison video myself between the two, in different areas....coins, relics, and freshwater jewelry hunting. I had an older Pentax W90 waterproof camera that I was doing the videoing with but it died on me. It could only do 720p quality video. I bought a newer camera that goes 1080p at 30 and 60 fps...and the video quality is amazing. I decided I would redo the video stuff with the new camera since the older camera footage and sound looks and sounds like crap compared to the new camera. I want people to be able to hear the sounds and see the differences. You'll be able to see why the Nox is my pick. I think the better comparison for the Multi Kruzer is the AT Max...just my opinion.

  31. Ted, The headband is hard plastic like the Koss phones. The ear cups fit snug and fit my head much like hearing protection ear muffs. The coiled wire is very thick gauge wire and way more beefy than the yellow Koss phones. There were no markings or documentation in the box with the headphones to say where they were made.

  40. So far all my 24K sales have been with the dual coil package for $100 more. I do have one customer who thinks the best coil on the 24K is the one that was designed for it (10" Ellip DD). I understand his thinking, but am trying to educate him on the different soils, types of gold and situations he'll come across when in the field. How many people feel the $100 more spent on the detector is worth the small 6" coil? Des anyone else feel the stock coil is sufficient? This is my latest find with the 24K and it is a 22 gram specimen. Found at 7" with the small 6" coil. Notice the iron staining on it. I sure hope it cleans up well.

  44. I did not do this video and it is good...BUT... my testing has shown much smaller of gold can be found. I'm talking tiny. The other aspect of the test is the Settings as I did not see what settings they had. Now in mineralized soils there will certainly be different results. Prety good test though for those who are not in the know.

  45. They apparently have an issue with tolerances between the various telescoping shaft components from their shaft component suppliers. It will be hit or miss as to whether your new shipped parts will fare any better (not sure they inspect and attempt to match them up before they ship the replacements based on anecdotal reports from users who have taken ML up on the warranty replacement parts) but the good news is that you can always have them try again at their expense, if you are unlucky enough to have the issue a second time around. The cam lock design is subject to wear over time so at some point we will all have to do something like Alluminati has done or go with a third party shaft design.

  46. I thought it was Arabic script myself. No apparent numerical date so then I thought it might be a token. Did a Google search for "bronze Arabic token" Found this: https://www.coincommunity.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=119853 The OP in that post states the date on his token as "1330" which would be correct for the Muslim calendar (so not the 14th century in this case). Some replies suggested it was Iranian, possibly a celebration or wedding token. Did a Google search for "Iranian Wedding Token" Found one: https://coinquest.com/cgi-bin/cq/coins.pl?coin=20728 I think that's it. Whew. Gotta love the Google machine ?

  47. There is no real difference between detecting gold nuggets or platinum nuggets. You ask specifically about four detectors: 1. Whites Goldmaster 24K - brand new, not in the hands of general public yet so too soon to know. Likely extremely hot on tiny targets, also likely to struggle in bad ground due to that very same small target intensity. 2. Fisher Gold Bug - Which one? The Gold Bug 2 is the “old reliable” and so a pretty safe bet. Though if it were me personally I would lean towards the 24K above as being a couple decades more up to date. The basic $499 Gold Bug is a very good performer at an entry level price. 3. Minelab Equinox 800 - a general purpose coin, relic, jewelry, prospecting unit. If that is what you are looking for it might be a good option. 4. White’s TDI - unlike other units above, a pulse induction detector. You get a detector like this to deal with intense ground and hot rocks, because in milder ground the units above will usually serve better, especially on the tiniest targets. But if your ground is so bad that the units above all fail, a PI is the automatic solution. For a deep dive into more information about the various options see Which Nugget Detector?

  49. Very nice, though other than marketing I don’t see a need for two models. Anything that works in the Monster should work on the Equinox and vice versa. Good news, thanks for posting.
