  1. We’re having a mild winter here in the Pacific NW, so I went out for a few hours today in search of some thawed ground and old coins. I did a little spot hopping to stay on diggable ground within this early 1900s park and was able to come home with an above average number of V Nickels. It’s not uncommon for me to come home with a couple Vs in one hunt but I think 5 is a new record for me. I also managed a a crusty wheat penny, a 1906 D Barber Dime and a Spokane United Railways Token. The little token was past 8” which I would have never believed possible until I dug it. They are very small and thin. It’s always nice to be able to get out in January in this neck of the woods.. Bryan

  3. Deep in the depths of winter here, I found myself partaking in some serious speculating. With all the controversy of whether or not the Equinox is multi frequency or not, I figure I'd bring some wood to keep warm lol. Some of you may recall in one of those threads I was trying to explain that the waveform we see can actually be comprised of more then one, two, three or more frequencies. Additionally I pondered if the multi frequency processing could just be done on the receive side using typical sinusoidal waves that are actually doing the work. Nonetheless here is the transmit side, the side that actually excites the target. Below you will see a FFT (Fast Fourier Transform) of the Equinox in Gold2. The scale goes from DC to 125 kHz. (Left to right) If you consider the advertised range of Multi-IQ frequencies as being 5 kHz to 40 kHz, you might be satisfied by this as the left half of this 125kHz graph is filled out nicely. There is even a couple little peaks up around 100 kHz, whether or not that is utilized I don't know. I'm way off base as to how MIneslab actually does this, but I just wanted to show the kind of information that can be extracted from these signals. I am not trying to prove anything specific other then to say I don't think Minelab is being misleading IMO. Assume something is a little off with my measuring, still that looks like multi-something. The approximate frequency peaks of interest measured from left to right are: -2.5 kHz -8 kHz -13 kHz -18 kHz -23.5 kHz -28.5 kHz -33.5 kHz -39 kHz -44 kHz -50 kHz -54 kHz -59.5 kHz That covers the advertised range of frequencies which exist on the left hand side of the graph, (Midpoint is 62.5 kHz) I wont bother with the higher frequency stuff as it may not be relevant. It doesn't really hit any of the single frequencies, on the other hand Minelab does not explicitly say what frequencies are used in Multi-IQ. (That I know of.) I am happy to see that low frequency response. I was thinking the Equinox was going to be all 8 kHz and higher, which it basically is, but I'm glad to see the 2.5 kHz peak right beside it and of almost equal strength.

  6. Equinox .. : Patent :US7432715 , US7579839....Minelab says in the patent that Tx emits from 2.5kHz-80khz - but the RX side receives frequencies from 5khz to 40khz and all over 40khz is filtered ... A few days ago I made measurements and compared all Equinox programs on Old 1.5.0 and New 1.7.5. Firmware, So soon to publish it ...I have also scanned the frequency of 5,10,15,20,40kHz ....

  7. I too have saw the 2.5 kHz show up on the multi-frequency scans I've done. I too am 100% satisfied with my Equinox. Hats off to Minelab, another winner in my book.

  9. Phrunt, I bought one of the brand new Sport package deals that come with the little 5x8 coil for $400 + $25 buck for the headphone adapter = $425 total new. I'm happy with it. I will need to pick up a larger coil for it at some point as there are times I like a little more ground coverage. It is very EMI resistant (more EMI resistant than my Gold Bug Pro) and sensitive enough for the majority of my target needs. If I had jumped on the Equinox band wagon I probably would never have looked at the AT series as I wouldn't have had the need for one. shrug HH Mike

  11. Love the last photo - you are a gutsy guy Tom!!! Tom, I just want to say how much I appreciate your keeping some direct communication lines open via the forums. It is a shame that White's will lose your enthusiasm and energy but I am sure you are doing what is best for you and your family. Hopefully you won't be a stranger here going forward, but no matter what best wishes to you and yours for a bright future. Take care.

  13. Thanks! I just use steel wool with a little dish soap and water, or SOS pads. I try to leave a little color on the coin if I can to help bring out the details. I use a small piece so I can control the cleaning. It’s easy to over do the rim. Bryan

  16. I went back and found those posts by EL Nino, his results have the same peaks as mine. I was looking for yours as well, maybe you didn't post them. That's alright either way.

  17. I was hunting in a light drizzle a couple of months back with a bag tied around my detector and thought, you know, I should really get a wet weather detector for days like this. I didn't want or need another full time detector, as I'm happy with the ones I already have. I just needed one for those occasional wet weather days. So looking at price vs use, the ATPro fit the bill. The price was good enough that I wouldn't fret if it only got used a few times a year and I have enough confidence in it that those few times I would use it wouldn't be a bust because I hadn't enough time on it to learn it. That was my reasoning. Very happy with it, too. HH Mike

  18. I recently tried Field 1 in a nail bed. It defaults to 2 tones (low for iron and high for non ferrous), and the recovery is at 6. It is similar to the "pitch" program for the Deus. You could even turn the recovery speed up to 7 depending on the nail density. It did alert me to several non ferrous targets that I couldn't pick out in 5/50 tones.

  19. Bob Canaday worked for White's Electronics for 33 years and was one of the true experts in the metal detecting community, posting on White's Forum, Findmall, and Friendly Forums as rcsnake. I used to Google and read all his posts that I could find. Bob was particularly knowledgeable on the White's V3i and wrote Hunting in Mineralized Ground with the V3i My condolences to Bob's family and friends. 20. New story thread.... Leaving for OZ around May 4th this year-- Can't reveal the details because it is super secret this year.... But hope to be upload some better video this year--- I have been searching for the simplest way to use a camera while in the field... I haven't found any yet that are that simple, most ways i have tried become so time consuming that they interfere with my fun and relaxation!!! ANd my TAsk mAster dont like it when i am ... "fkn around!" If he sees too many videos or pictures he will scold me... Maybe a selfie, "follow me" cheapie drone----- I could hang a piece of bait meat on it for the flies while it is hovering near me,,,LOLOL This is Jan 20th and I will be traveling to LA on Feb 3rd ..for my last 3 months of "work" Carry on !

  21. Well guys, it's been quite a ride the past 3 years! Working at White's has been the most fun and most challenging job I've ever had, and I am glad I took that path. But my career is taking a new and exciting turn and as of February 1st, 2019, I will no longer be employed at White's HQ in Sweet Home. I have gained a lifelong hobby, many friendships, and learned from some of the best detectorists out there. The great thing about this change is that I will have more time for detecting, so even though I will no longer be posting on DP as a representative for White's Electronics, I'm hoping to share my finds and trips with you as a "civilian." I wish White's the best of luck in 2019 and beyond. First trip to Nevada with Tim (far right) the guy who introduced me to metal detecting. The other guys allowed us to detect the ghost town on the ranch. Me in Brasil testing the GM24k. Last nugget found working for White's. Steve H. hunted with me and it is an experience I will never forget! That guy will forget more than most of us will ever know. Bonus pic of me in my winning 2017 Halloween costume. Don't get any funny ideas, I'm married and straight (but what I do for fun on weekends is my own business).

  22. I'm not much for carry bags for metal detectors but I figured it would be really nice just to throw the Gold Monster in the truck and take off instead of wrapping it up like a precious cargo to head to the desert. I found a Minelab Excalibur bag on eBay and I figured it was big enough and said what the heck and bought it. I'm pretty happy with the way it worked out. And yes that is the new Doc's Gold Monster cover and arm cuff that is the cats meow when it comes to protection for this machine.

  26. The presence or absence of bears never changed how I detected, always used dual cup headphones. I never saw many at Chisana but they are just a fact of life everywhere in Alaska, especially in Interior. We ran bears out of camp at Moore Creek now and then. Plenty of them running around in the Sierra Nevadas also. As far as I am aware no person using a metal detector has ever been attacked by a bear. Anyway, bears don’t worry me much personally. Photo op. Do whatever you feel you need to do to be comfortable with the situation.

  27. I’ve done loads of prospecting in Tassie, not as much gold but you can get Osmiridium there, worth even more then gold! I won’t be rushing down to sluice in the snow again though, sitting in the backhoe over here is much more pleasant . New generator turned up for the dry blower yesterday, 25kva Lister ??

  29. I put my Hero Black in a waterproof case to keep the dust and dirt off of it... audio pitiful even without putting it in a case--- especially when i got 6 feet away from the cam so i could detect while filming.... it was just too much for me to deal with, considering the pressure i had coming down on me from HQ

  31. I wish we could roll the clock back and have a do over George. I don’t think any of us realized how quickly the gold fields would play out. Compared to what was possible over twenty years ago we are now just chasing crumbs. JP must not have been impressed with the U.S. goldfields. I have lobbied him trying to get him to come back, but all he does is offer excuses about not wanting to run into bears and such!

  32. Never go by the package myself ? Takes some practice to get that kind of result. But Good On Ya ? If your feeling sparky try re-dissolving them and try, try try again. Got a good result there and if you try again save one crystal for the seed.

  33. Go Pro Hero 7 Black. Good vid. Easy to upload automatically into smart phone and the app creates a ‘story’ for you. Or you can easily cut or do basic edit functions yourself. And voice command of Go Pro “On” or Gro Pro “Off” means no more stuffing around with dirty fingers wondering if you have pressed the right button. We’ve been happy with ours so far.

  35. The old coinshooter has been gone now for many years (1993) but I remember him very well..he used a CM 3 then, which he just wore out, it was replaced with a brand new Coinmaster 4...I got to hunt with him a few times and it was a pleasure to watch him slowly shuffle along he would stop scan back and forth and either dig or move on, I knew he was listening carefully.. We were hunting together in an old park, lots of targets old steel BCS mostly and other junk.. He called over to me and said what do you think about that? He used one of those old diggers that looked like it was made from conduit with a long narrow point, perfectly stuck on the end was a nice little gold ring..... This person had a ring collection that would choke you, in fact one ring he told me about that he had found was a gents gold piece with a large precious stone, he had taken it to a jeweler that cleaned it for him and I think later he sold it to the jeweler for enough to buy himself a new Ranchero...I tried to hunt with him as much as I could but we lived quite a distance apart and I was just starting to work on preliminary Trans Alaska pipe projects... By the time I could spend time with him he could no longer swing that heavy Whites unit but he liked tagging along with me.. The gold rings he had found were sold but the other pieces he had tied together on a string and there were many.. I haven't looked in the big canvas bank bag he gave me years ago that was almost full of dimes, quarters, halves and a few silver dollars he had found at the old Fairgrounds, parks and old closed country school yards.I .learned a lot by watching how carefully this person hunted, slowly, listening and moving around..He did his homework, a little research and talking to the old timers that stopped by watching him...Who was this person? This Old Coinshooter, I knew him very well, He was my Dad....

  42. Very true they are a top combo but you know I think back to this years season and I did approx 5 hours with the SDC and only to check out how it was with the Lithium batteries, but if the SDC was my only machine I reckon say a 14" mono would be the bees knees. The 14" size seemed to be the most used size for me in the PI days.
