  2. I did a short beach hunt at one of my favorite spots and pulled the silver ring under a big pile of rocks. I couldn’t find anything else in the wet sand so I move to the dry sand and my first target was this little gold. This is by far my smallest piece of gold. Good luck out there.

  3. I have been working an old area that mostly has fine gold, though I have detected and recovered a few nuggets up there. But it's not a big producer. There are bench deposits of old river gravels on bedrock above the main channel, so naturally I worked to bedrock. The deeper I dug, the worse values turned up. Bedrock is key, right? Not here. Turns out the gold is actually sitting on top of the ancient hard pack! Once I learned that whenever the gold was deposited, it could go no deeper than the crunchy stuff I was able to get some nice chunky gold out to add to my collection. Hope this helps someone else out. Interesting that it must have weathered after the river bed was cemented, and it's rough enough to show that it hasn't travelled far.

  4. ? Made you look! OK, there is a dectecting story behind this, and actually more typical finds below. The theme is that sometimes you're out detecting and find things you weren't expecting, and even things your detector might not see (or could see but wasn't needed). Two weeks ago I was out a new site (park). Someone I was walking past asked me if I had found any mushrooms. "No, but then I wasn't looking for them, either." So I go back this week, detecting again, and while peering down at the ground while swinging my detector, there plain as day was this morel. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Morchella) Actually, around here they sell for around $25/lb when fresh. So in those units it's worth a bit more than a US silver dime (but I'd rather have found one of those). My wife fried it up for me -- two small bites after all the water was out of it. Pretty tasty nonetheless. This sorta reminds me of another hunt I had a couple weeks ago, this one to a school built in 1959. I was thinking "that's about 10 years for silver coins to have been dropped" so I was hopeful for those or maybe some Wheat pennies. Less than 30 minutes after starting a survey hunt (the school grounds are many acres in size) I got a high but inconsistent tone. Looking down I could see some silver, and dropping to my knees started pulling out a chain with a pendant, then seeing more silver, another chain and two rings. About a foot away I saw something white that turned out to be a porcelain elephant, likely part of some kind of jewelry box. Why was all this jewelry (every piece marked '925') laying on top of the ground in a schoolyard?? We can only speculate. I did dig another sterling silver ring (on the right in the pic below) about 6 inches deep in another part of the schoolyard later that same day. Although I've been back two more times and found lots of clad, nickels, and copper Memorials I still don't have a single old coin from this site. And I haven't found any more jewelry, either.

  5. From what I see up here in Idaho & Wyoming, cold weather has no impact on ticks. Many of them even at elevations above 7,000', where it gets way below zero. One of 'em in Wyoming got me a few years ago, and I ended up with Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever. Now I treat all my outdoor clothing with Permethrin, and my skin with Picaridin. Tick diseases are really nasty. Jim

  7. Because it's not a target---it's ground noise---but dig it anyway!!!!!! lololol

  8. I agree, the Volume on the 7000 can do wonders to the response of a target, however, for clarification, there is no Target Volume adjustment on the 7000, only the GPX has Target Volume. The 7000 has Volume and Volume Limit. Keep finding those lobster nuggets :) Brian.

  9. Phoenix - SSSSHHHHHHH, what are you doing?!? Stop telling people that the GPZ is good. More gold for us. LOL. (kidding of course-there's still plenty to go around) Controlling the hum on a GPZ is definitely far different than the GPX5K. Sensitiity/Threshold/and Target volume all seem to have to be in perfect balance. There's fewer knobs to turn on this machine, but they sure can change the way the gold sounds off and if it sounds off at all. If you can really force yourself to not dig those targets that sound like gold, and instead test some of the settings, you will really get a handle on what changes the target sound in your ground. It was eye opening for my locations. Andyy

  10. Last weekend a couple of friends and I got out for a meteorite hunt to Franconia Arizona. I found 2 Chondrites weighing 29 and 98 grams. A few small H metal irons, a nice piece of rose colored Chalcedony, and a .50 casing with 43 date stamped. It got past 100, heat is already coming.... Dave

  11. Nah, mainly set volume correctly and it is no longer ground noise, the Z I`ve found when set for the ground it is working and a slow swing has very little ground noise just a very stable threshold buzz at where you`ve set it. That is another bonus for me that the Z has on the Xs , it because of its stableness it allows you to cover ground quicker and dig much less ground noise. But and I repeat that is for me. Horses etc etc...………… Just to reinforce another belief I have and at numerous times mentioned, when I put the X coil on I did not and have not Quick Tracked it or auto got it to find the quietest channel, these are set as it was with the ML coils, in fact I have not changed these settings this season as yet. Tis a magic detector, that has just grown on me, but watch how quick I switch when another detector with promised better capabilities is available.

  12. I never understood why Minelab took the word "target" out. I know when I call it target volume I`m calling it the wrong name, but I`m OK with that. Dave

  13. They are busy with other new stuff - I have no clue what it is, but they have clearly indicated that it is coming. There is nothing “lucky” however about their “aquihire” of the Manta program and team. Carl Moreland’s long running geotech forum is where Alexandre elected to “surface” his long program of studying, then further developing multi channel PI detector technology. Carl saw this and using his “put up or shut up” approach - contacted Alexandre and got a prototype to try. That part was pretty straightforward - mind you - I have no actual information, but imagine pitching the idea of buying in and hiring these French guys to First Texas Management. This is a closely held company, Tom Walsh runs the place. Tom had to make the decision to literally “buy in”. Lucky, maybe, but also daring.

  14. Yep, volume on the Z not target volume, I think for some of us because we have gone over from the PIs we`ve just taken the "target" across but NV many thanks for pointing this out for clarification. I had to turn the Z on to see it shows as simply volume not target volume which considering the 100s of hours I spent behind it says volumes. LOL For me the Zs a much easier detector to use then the ML PIs (other then the SDC of course) that could be simply because of the mineralization in the ground I detect, because it has less to fiddle with or it`s suits me. Horses for different Courses for different Jockey`s I suspect. Andyy I think your on the money, lets be selfish and stop plugging the Z?

  15. It's just a plus for Fisher ... that he has proven to evaluate this possibility as a forward-looking technology and pushed it into a real product. It's a step in before in the Detection Options ... And that is important....

  16. Just saying. Imagine where 1st Texas would be, if they'd not latched on to the Manta and the developer in France. They were in bad need of something new. Rather, still desperate for something to set them on top again. Just saying.

  17. Nice work GB I dont know if those mushrooms grow here in Calif...I love mushrooms but I'm too chicken to eat wild ones. I got into a jewerly cash one evening at a local park...but it was all mostly plated stuff. I figured someone stole it then went through it out on the grass. None of it was worth keeping. Looks like your got some nice ones though. strick

  19. Me too I hate ticks. I got one dug into the middle of my back and had to have a friend burn it outwith a cigarette while detecting on the Scott River in Northern California. Instant pain relief when it backed out. Way to go Scott, your skunk is broken. Glad to see you found some gold in another spot I mentioned to you.

  22. I ordered the Q12 Plus SoundPEATS Bluetooth Headphones that hawk recommended. $25 on Amazon and they paired up with APTx LL right away. They seem solid, but time will tell after a couple hunts. Thanks, hawk, for the advice.

  23. I was not too worried about this year.... but that could mean just in time for Christmas. Can you believe it is already May? The year is just blowing by for me so no matter when it is it won't be long!! For me if it came out real soon I would have to just jump on one with fingers crossed. If it is a winter introduction I can afford to wait and watch until spring.

  26. From experience and from the manual, there is no change in the target ID number or the depth reading after you press the pinpoint button. The number you see and the depth reading are just the last number and depth reading remembered by the Nox before you pressed the pinpoint button. If you happen to press the pinpoint button without having detected a recent target or you have to press it again because of the weird ghosting that sometimes happens (one of the issues GB Amateur was referring to) you will get no depth reading and the two dashes _ _. So, the only thing that you should pay attention to when Nox pinpointing is the highest pitched tone and the filling in of the speedometer arch. Jeff

  29. I`m still not getting out for a great deal of hours and it is ages since I got a nice piece at depth but I went out for about 1½ hours yesterday and got one similar to the last one I got. The bottom one is yesterdays piece. It was only 1" down and a very iffy signal with the 7000. These two came from 2 different spots maybe 5 miles apart.

  30. I've learnt over the years to substantially slow down my swing speed even when utilising a faster recovery speed setting (in my specific being the Deus). Even at a moderate swing speed you are still only getting a brief snapshot of what is passing under the coil, especially in junky or iron contaminated ground. Some good sounding iron high toning may be prevalent on initial sweeps, though after some slower passes the detector almost re-corrects the high tone iron target to a low tone - same with some non-ferrous targets, they can clean up to a more accurate tone with a slower sweep speed or after multiple sweeps over the suspect target. Some of those difficult non-ferrous can be completely overlooked if combining fast sweep speeds and a fast recovery setting - you may only get part tone, or sometimes none at all. I've proved it to myself on multiple occasions going over the same patches of ground picking out targets that were literally never heard on the first few passes. - not due to poor coverage or incorrect settings, simply due to not taking the time to slow things down to give the detector a chance to correctly identify or even pick up on the targets in the first place. Either way you would think it would be logical to slow your sweep speed down if detecting difficult sites where faster recovery speeds are justified, whether it be with the Equinox or Deus, especially if set on the highest number of tones. Why put myself through the "torture" of say 99 tones and a high recovery speed in an area saturated by targets, it simply gives me a more comprehensive picture of what is happening under the coil at any given time, you either love it or hate it. Hence once again why it can be advantageous to slow down and forensically sift through the various in-ground targets, and give the detector a chance to do its job. As Steve mentioned, I don't necessarily think there is any "set in stone" procedure for matching up swing speed with recovery speed, despite what some people may preach, do whatever works for you. At the end of the day achieving some good finds is all that matters, and if slowing sweep speed combined with a higher recovery speed works for you (just as it did for me), then that is a good thing.

  32. I ordered the Q12 Plus SoundPEATS Bluetooth Headphones Magnetic Wireless Earbuds IPX6 In-Ear Bluetooth 5.0 Wireless Earphones (9 Hours Playtime, APTX-LL, CVC 8.0, 10mm Drivers) same as CliveHamy. They arrived in 2 days from amazon $28. I paired right up after charging. They are very nice. They come with 4 different wings and 3 different buds. I buried a penny and a quarter at 4 inches and swung my Equinox 800 over them. They sound just like my head phones. Spot on and pinpointed right on. I went on a short hunt where my grand daughter tossed my Christmas present ( several modern coins) and I hit a quarter and a nickel. So far the earbuds are comfortable and they are APTx Low Latency Bluetooth 5.0. I recommend them for someone looking to use earbuds instead of head phones. These will be my go to wireless earbuds from now on.

  33. Happy Birthday Minelab from one of your earlier U.S. dealers back in the day. It has been a fun ride, and I am very thankful to the company and more so to the people at Minelab who have put the world's most powerful metal detectors in my hands. Thanks for listening to this kid from Alaska and also putting up with my nonsense. Best wishes to all of you!

  35. Very nice ring return Skate. The only time I get sterling to read that low, at least on the ones I have found, is if the band has a crack. Same will happen on gold rings. Many gold rings have a solder joint and when they get in salt water for very long, that weak spot will crack. I found one once and was showing my buddy when he dropped it. When it hit a rock, it bounced a couple feet away. I swung back over it and the detector would not hear it. We both looked at each other quite shocked and could not believe the CTX 3030 would not hear the ring. I went to all metal and bang, it was there, but not the original tone or numbers it had read before. when I got back to Boise and to the club meeting I took the ring into the meeting and shared the story and showed everyone. If I gently squeezed the ring together, it beeped as expected, but ones I let off the pressure and the crack opened up, the ring would not respond in the regular Beach mode I used. My wife also has a 1930's platinum with antique diamond ring that was passed down to her mother. When she passed, it went to my wife. The ring reads 12-03 to 12-07 (CTX 3030) depending on the way the ring is laying on the ground. When it comes to jewelry, it can literally read anywhere and I do not get surprised much anymore. Thanks for sharing.

  36. Trash usually gives erratic signals maybe from the odd shapes or the alloys used or combination of the both or in many cases there are other objects around that can mask the target such as iron rust, nails, can slag and even halos from zinc pennies. I don't dig everything but rather take my time to try to isolate the target by slowing and shortening your swing so just the overlap of the DD or in case of a concentric just the inner coil passes over on either side of the target. The machine should settle down on the target and start to give a more stable number. You can also get an idea how big the target might be by the distance it takes for the signal to start and end.

  39. There was no adjustment for me going from the 11" coil to the 15" coil. Pinpoints the same, more or less in the middle of the coil. In the UK I was using a shovel to dig targets. They ended up in a small pile of dirt. I found I could use the 15" coil at a 45 degree angle to nose around in the pile and pinpoint off the tip of the coil. This worked so well I stopped using a pinpointer.

  40. YEEEHAA!!!! i was notified by mail today that my patent application has been approved! I need to send them a check for $250, and my patent will be issued. Only 5% of the patent applications are approved on the first run-through, so I'm really pleased to be in that group. I put 250 hours into the application. I'm really happy all that effort paid off. I may never make any money from the machine, but it's still nice to have a patent.
