  1. So I'm stuck at home and decided that I wanted to crush some rock that I had. It was just a hair over a pound of rock, but these were all pieces that were found with a detector. None had nice gold showing, most had no gold showing but were quartz, from a district known for producing high grade, and made my GM1000 sing. None were good candidates for specimens, none really made the detector scream, so I thought these were good bits of rock for crushing. One piece was from California, the rest were from a little obscure gold district in Nevada that produced very little but what they did produce was pretty high grade. I've attached a photo of the rock before crushing. I was really surprised by the outcome. I got over 15 grams, nearly half an ounce - 0.49 ounces. I wish I had a 100 pounds of this rock - the grade comes out at about 1,000 ounces per ton. No surprise that the button is a little light in color, Nevada gold is often on the electrum side of things. I did a video on the whole process of going from raw rock to a finished dore button.

  2. In South Australia we are really limited to public accessible fossicking areas. We have two areas open to the public at Echunga: Chapel Hill & Jupiter Creek Diggings, and another area which is the old Gumeracha Goldfields. The area available to the public is now a pine plantation, so access is via a permit available from ForestrySA. So when 90% of the old diggings has had pines planted on top of it, unfortunately a lot of the old gold workings such as shallow diggings, test pits, shafts, wash piles etc are simply no longer visible, so it does present a challenge of knowing where to look, but there are also some positives: 1. Old pines give you nice shade during summer, and 2. When they harvest, the ground gets churned up from all the machinery. With all this extra time I've had on my hands, I've had time to sort through a lot of footage and found many videos from my visits to the forest, with hopefully some valuable info to others. Part 2 will be up later today.

  4. One good thing about social distancing was not having relatives for Easter dinner at our place this year so that we didn't have to clean the house! That afforded a couple hours of detecting time. Sadly, the football field and baseball fields I normally frequent were all chained off. So, I had to get creative. I detected around the outside of one of the diamonds and ran the 15" Equinox coil over this recent drop. I would not have seen it just walking past it, so I still count it as a find even though no dirt was dug. The chain is .925 and the cross says 10K. There are a couple names on the part that the chain goes through. My diamond tester did not show positive for diamonds. A blessed Easter to you all!

  7. Fisher is not accepting pre-orders. If some European dealer is doing so, it is without their cooperation. The plant in El Paso is under a shut down order from the El Paso mayor. No US dealer has been notified of any specific plans for launch of the AQ and I would be very surprised if any of them are soliciting pre-orders without knowing when it will be launched, how it will be marketed and what it will sell for. There is credible information that the initial batch will be limited and it may well be that the production rate is kept low until the real size of the market is known. I know for a fact that none of this is being done to create “hype” or to maximize the sales price of the AQ. How do I know? Recent conversations with senior leadership at First Texas Products.

  8. Sounds like hype to convince people to preorder if I ever heard it. “Give us your money or lose your place in line and wait forever” is a game as old as the ages with retailers. I’d say just the opposite. Unless you are 100% certain you don’t mind being a test pig and all that entails, hold back a bit on this one for reports from people you trust.

  10. Thereis very little user adjustment on the Vanquish series. On the V-540 you can change the Volume and Sensitivity, and that's about it other than switch from High Iron Bias to Low Iron Bias if desired. Then you have the three factory-default modes with their own default-designed Recovery Speeds. All the user can do to 'customize' performance for the 'Custom' mode or program is this: 1.. Determine which of the three factory Programs you prefer with regard to Recovery Speed .. and .. 2.. Select the Discriminate segments you want to accept and then 'Save' those settings. The Custom mode will then function similar to the selected default program, Coin, Relic or Jewelry, but with the Disc. segments the user prefers. For example: With my 1st V-540 using the 5X8 DD, I am usually hunting trashier places and I chose the Jewelry mode and Accept ALL except the first two Disc. segments. This allows me to hear most Iron Nails and some other ferrous debris, but still reject some ferrous junk and eliminate ground signal falsing. On my 2nd V-540 with the 9X12 DD, I used the Relic mode, Accepted all Disc. segments except the first two. If you listened, and if I recall that was several months back, but my memory was that the Vanquish series use 3 Frequencies in their Multi-IQ design. It was the Equinox series that relies on 5 frequencies. I might have to listen to the podcast again in case I heard crooked. Monte

  11. I know about the 'updateable' comment from the podcast before, but not sure they have an 'update'; or that the service tech knows how to do it; or if they have a 'fix' for the Vanquish GB design glitch. I've tinkered with the Equinox 800 a couple of times in the past .. briefly .. w/o making any adjustments to my friend's settings. I was interested in the Vanquish 540 Pro Pack because I liked the looks of, and potential for, that 5X8 DD coils as a mid-sized coil for most sites I hunt to cover the 'fringe' area. Also to be used as a 'scouting-unit' I had reservations about the V-540 because it lacks Single-Frequency selection and Ground Balance capability like the EQ-800 which could lead to a performance issue. I bought the Vanquish 540 Pro Pack for the coils, the looks for balance and feel, and in hope of a decent 'general-purpose' detector to complement the other detectors in my 'Outfit.' However, I anticipated a problem and it took me about 10-15 minutes to assemble the 540 and then confirm my suspicions and verify a 'glitch' in the circuitry design. It seems they didn't circulate a prototype to anyone who knew much bout detectors, performance and Ground Balance related issues before production. So, it arrived on a Monday and I spent a week hunting with it to learn it better and verify the glitchy issues and then a week later I sent it to Minelab USA with a 5-page hand-written description of what the problem was and how to confirm it. I also included a sample rock from my seminar tote so they would have a mineral specimen to check it out there in the shop. My initial impression of Minelab USA was positive as the phone was answered on the first try. The gal was very polite and e-mailed me a shipping label. All seemed good. Yes, it has a design glitch, but for me and my hunting style and needs, I am able to work around it with my Custom mode settings. I was sending it off for potential service, but was so impressed with the V-540 and enjoyed hunting with it, that I ordered another new 540 Pro Pack that afternoon. It arrived the next week and displayed identical behavior, so I knew it was a glitch in their design and it wasn't just a one-time fluke with my initial device. They had my model for a while now and it should have been an easy correction, either by internal trimmers, which I doubt it has, or done in 'software' to correct any GB issues in the different modes. I called a minimum of 3 times a day, everyday Mon. thru Fri. and it went directly to Voice Mail and I never got a call back. The next week I did the same thing. One return call was made the day I was out of cell service for 15 minutes on the way to a hunt site. I returned the call, and no answer. Finally on the following Tuesday I got a call from a guy who oversees the Tech Dept, but isn't a tech himself. He said it would be shipped back to me on Wednesday. I asked for a confirmation and t4rackig number so I could be home, and also for the service tech to include a description of what was done to fix the issue. Well, it didn't get shipped out until Friday. And when it arrived they remembered to include all the parts and my test sample rock ... however, there wasn't a note or any paperwork form the service department or MInelab USA. Nothing. And the detector was unchanged and still showed the same glitchy behavior. That who service thing after my first phone encounter left a lot to be desired. It suggested there isn't a fix for the glitch, at least yet, or the service tech isn't to savvy of how detectors work, performance issue, and how to correct them. Or, he doesn't know how to remedy a software issue. Thus, I am not too keen on MInelab USA's customer service and device service, but I am liking their product ... for the most part. I keep the 5X8 DD on my 1st V-540 as it gets the most use, and the 9X12 DD stays affixed to my 2nd V-540 for a quick-grab for hunting open areas. And just to add to my Detector Outfit of 4 Nokta Makro and 2-Tesoro models, I bought an Equinox 800 last week w/6" DD coils to join my Vanquish devices to have trio of Minelab's on my team. My first goal was to work up some programs in 5-Tone to come close to what I get from my Vanquish 540. Then I'll make corrections from there for any enhanced performance. Monte PS: I'm not a big fan of 'updatable' detectors as they ought to be designed and checked out in order to have a fine product at the time of introduction. However, I'll watch for an 'upgrade' to see if they take care of this design issue.

A few have also fallen victim to the 14x9" Evo in more recent years - something about the flat wound elliptical that really sniffs out flat thin pieces.

  16. I did learn something I was curious about concerning the recovery speeds. Relic mode is equal to recovery speed 2 on the Nox. Coin mode is equal to 5, and Jewelry mode is equal to 4. Wonder what the custom mode is equal to? Also the 5 freqs are weighted the same for each mode unlike the Nox.

  18. There had been talk of the Vanquish USB port being for online updates. I just assumed since Minelab didn't showcase this as a Vanquish feature that it was just for flashing firmware, and it wasn't updateable like the Equinox. Aside from a couple of Russians spreading the rumor, it had died down. I just ran across this website which claims the author has personally spoken to Minelab USA. They have reportedly confirmed the online update capability. Didn't know there was a Minelab USA. As far as I can tell there is only a US service center? I still call bovine scatology on this one. As I said earlier, Minelab would have shouted that feature from the rooftops if it was a planned feature. Anybody know the author and his credentials? https://detectingquest.com/2020/03/13/minelab-vanquish-firmware-updatable-confirmed/

Unfortunately, it's not going too great outside right now so I guess it's the best time to do research for new spots. 🙂🙃 Just wanted to stop by and say hi to everyone!

  20. Been staying Home due to the Convid19 virus but seen a small window to get out yesterday. Got my much needed exercise at a private beach. Water was calm and beautiful with plenty of targets. Being my first trip out since March the 15th I could see changes, good and bad in the bottom. Since the winds and water were calm I went for the faintest targets in all metal with the excalibur. Slowly working a area about 800 feet off shore. Two 10k gold rings, and a few crusty silvers. First was a class ring I believe to be from the early 1900's, no markings which would place it before 1906. The second a men's 11 gram semi honker. Diamond tested real, which does very little for the value since it's less then a 1/2 carat. If I can slip out once a week and not see a soul I'll be very Happy... Stay safe and Healthy......joe

  22. I agree with you that they came so close with the Vanquish 540 Pro Pack. Easily out-classed anything in the lower to mid-price range from White's and Garrett, and also bettered most of those from FTP with features and in-the-field performance. But anyone who's used the Nokta / Makro Simplex + knows it still has features and adjustments that surpass the Vanquish. I thought the same as you did. Add Automated or Manual GB and more adjustments for a single frequency for the 'Custom' program slot. I'd be fine with 10 kHz, 12 kHz or up to 15 kHz for a single frequency. Physical packaging and dual coils and the excellent ML-80 headphones in the 540 Pro package4 is absolutely one of the best values on the market today. Both of mine make a good 'fit' in my Detector Outfit for many uses. Let's hope Minelab sees fit to make a GB upgrade for the Vanquish series to remedy the design glitch, especially since it is definitely their fault since it was released that way. Monte

  23. Yeah, it's all completely innocent. Nobody has any interest at all in getting people primed up to buy this detector. I'll bet not one dealer out there has any names on a list of potential Impulse buyers just waiting to get in line. Whether taking a pre-order now, or paving the way to have people lined up to place those pre-orders, it's all the same game.

  28. For Equinox and Vanquish - the service center will only test and replace faulty hardware which means straight up replacement of a faulty coil/cable, control pod, rod/stem/cuff, associated headphones and wireless audio accessories, or Equinox battery (if defective within the first year). Everything is surface mount, microelectronics now. Gone are the days of detector tuneups and tweakable potentiometer, variable capacitors, and inductors. It is a throwaway electronics world now which has both upside and downside. As "repair" technicians, not software designers, they have no authority to alter the software/firmware in any way. That has to come from the Factory in the form of an all user firmware update. Who knows if ML will update Vanquish at this point. All we know is that it is technically feasible for the end user to do it provided they are given the appropriate update interface program and firmware. Regarding the Vanquish, I am with you Monte. ML was a hair's breadth away from completely knocking it out of the park - three things would have made this detector truly great and should not have increased the price one iota - 1) ground grab/or manually adjustable GB (Simplex has it - so this is not a cost driver), 2) Replace the custom mode slot with a single frequency mode - at say 10 khz, and 3) simply make the 3 Multi IQ modes remember their custom discrimination settings after power down, just like the Equinox does, obviates both the need and limitations of a single custom mode slot. Would like to see some kind of sw fix for the GB issue, but I doubt it will come to pass because what you really need is ground grab or a manual ground balance setting and I don't see that happening without some accompanying change to the physical user interface. Hope I am wrong. PS - I also want to say that while ML may not have "hit it out of the park", it IS a helluva detector for the price and the included coils make the 540 PP worth the trip.

  29. Back out Tuesday...One Gold and two silvers...But Monday's storm has changed the way this spots bottom looks. Almost like someone came thru with a huge dredge and removed the sand, In some areas. Just a guess after three hours reconning the spot I would say there was close to 4 foot of sand removed in some area's and others untouched......which I have seen before above water but never this much deep in the water. Unfortunately the little area I could get into held only iron..More time will be needed to see where the sand has gone and search the huge troughs / cuts.

  30. Lately I've been trying to figure out how to gain new permissions during these trying times were in. I don't want to knock on doors, but I would like to be ahead of the game once this problem passes. The other day I got lucky and noticed a truck pulled over to the side of the road and stopped to see if he needed assistance , turns out it was a local property owner who was out running his dog, due to being cooped up in the house. We started to talk and I realized he was from a particular 10 acre property I wanted to hunt. So I asked him if I could hunt his property and he said yes. I usually do not get this lucky. Other than stalking property owners Ha Ha Ha , Does anybody has any creative ways to get new permissions during this mess that were in, I would be HAPPY to listen and the funnier the better. I could use a good laugh at this point in time. And by the way, I do not want to use night vision goggles to hunt. Hope all are doing well and staying safe.

  32. Also in the original post I mentioned that its specific gravity is about 6.2. The common copper alloys (common brasses and common bronzes) have s.g.'s close to 9. IMO Carl is on the right track when he says 'pot metal'. I think that is a broad spectrum of alloys, all of which are easy to melt and not very robust. Pot metal often contains zinc, although that's another element which has density up there with copper, around 9. But alloys don't necessarily reflect the densities of their constituent elements, and there are a few low density elemental metals (like aluminum and magnesium) which might be tossed in the pot. We've pretty much beaten this topic to death (with a hammer ).

  37. Every tool has its purpose, my guess is its a Chinese repro. That being said it is a cabinet makers hammer. Remember not all nails were steel, and upholsterers used the same kinds of hammers for brass and copper tacks. These hammers were not just used for furniture. They were used for leather work as 2Valen said, but also used for inlay work to help set veneer. You wouldn't use a claw hammer to straighten a fender (Well maybe). These hammers were made to be low weight as not to damage your project. A really big one would be about 8.oz. The one you have looks like it was used for the wrong purpose over the years.

  38. The Fisher F2/F4 shares some of these characteristics, too. Most of the electronics is powered from a regulated voltage derived from (9V+9V)=18V , but the audio stage is run off a single 9V. So weak audio but fully functional detector is common ...

  40. Very interesting. An old Gold Bug 2 (the GB2 uses two 9V batteries) trick involved the fact that the detector could actually run off one battery. So one battery supplied both the detector circuit and audio. The other battery apparently supplied just the detector circuit but not the audio? If you lost a battery you could run the detector on one by placing it in the appropriate slot. Or, when the detector ran “dead”, swapping battery locations would add extra hours. Seems that dual power circuit scheme carried over into the single battery design.

  41. Some of my most memorable days have been in the remote east pilbara in wa when i have walked onto really old raked areas (maybe with a dozen old 9volt batteries laying around). Gold everywhere deeper down and downslope some bigger slugs that the vlf machines from that first detector rush could not hope to hear. Tip, When you find more then a few old batteries laying around on the goldfields have a good look around....and pick up batteries.

Even in a small populous state like Victoria (Aus) there are areas that have not been worked at any time in the past or present - and many miles from known gold fields. As Dale says, do the research and follow the geology. You will often draw a blank but when it pays off, it can seriously deliver:

Being in the water here for over a hundred years takes a toll. The one pictured is 10k and since it has no fineness marks that would put it before 1906, when they passed the Gold stamp act of 1906/07, where all gold and silver had to be marked. (USA) I'm guessing but the ring had the emblem add and they used silver to attach the emblem. Which caused the emblem to turn crusty like silver...Before and after pictures..

  48. Wow, in 2 years, this is the first I've heard someone bringing this up as an issue. It takes a deliberate push to get into the settings menu in the first place and then several additional pushes to move between settings. Then you have to press another button to even change a setting. I suppose the power button is vulnerable to an inadvertent factory reset (I personally find it difficult to manipulate on purpose much less accidentally), but even then you can simply slide a wool cap or something like that over the control head to keep the button from being inadvertently pressed while transporting the unit and you protect the control head to boot. If you somehow have messed the unit up and are lost because you have deviated far from the defaults, then full and partial search profile resets are available to get you back to square one. Would be interested to know if others think this is a real world problem with Equinox, but not here. This is a Vanquish thread.

  49. Yes Steve..I dont want anyone to think its a walk in the park on my account.I too struggled with it and still have learning to do.Its a unorthodox unit. Its quirky. The worse the soil a person has the better results he may have with it.But you dont turn it on and get blown away on inland sites. It takes time to see what its doing and how to tune it find it out.Study what you see is happening and notice things its doing other units are not doing or struggling to do on in soil targets. If a user starts to pay attention to this he will see its strongest point. What i mainly wanted to do is how should I say is LET CAT OUT OF THE BAG .The strongest point to the machine is mineral punch. Its in alot of ways like getting a P.I. machine to run in the soil like with timings etc on maybe a GPX type unit.keep it stabilized learn audio traits. The Tarsacci is collecting alot of soil DATA that's for sure. Its seeing everything mineral, rocks,Even seems ground temp changes from sunny sites to shady sites. Its using a filter to silence these things very sparingly. In my mind and only my mind (no inside info) its doing this to punch tricky soil.See it all then try to decipher it in processor. So what this does it create a machine that can get mineral ping at times even slight blow back at times from soil.Sort of a all metal discing feel. But its pretty intelligent in what it does.It just creates quirky hits. Not dead pan hits but some weird feedback. And the salt balance seems to be there to help Filter some of that quirky ping hits. This is where adapting your brain to a ping hit to a sonar echo type hit comes into play.My biggest problem was and still at times is chasing pings.Foot deep small and or bent nails.I'm used to a say VLF chirp/ping being a deep goody barely making it through. On the Tarsacci pings are rejected targets. The sonar echo sound is the legitimate hits.(Gotta have headphones on).The biggest problem a user will face inland is deciphering these reports.its not the bigger nails and up iron its the small inch long or bent stuff.the machine wants to not let those pass by if its not getting a solid read..It will lean more to trying to let them through than assign them as iron. This is it so seems not to miss iffy deep goodies.Ive also learned that deep goodies say penny sized and up dont really ping or sonar echo they become a fuzzier high tone . As far as hunting my favorite sites .thick iron.If I had started out in a site like that with the Tarsacci i would of gave up.Learn it in light iron areas first off the edge of habitation sites etc.The iron hunting for me is where i like to be.more chances in habitation areas to make more finds than random scattered through out say the woods fields .And the Tarsacci exhibits something unique in that scenario. I'm not going to say its a Deus in iron its not.But it does do one thing well and that's punch bad soil. And I've always had it in my mind if I could combat bad soils and iron mixed there's more and its not deep.Maybe just lurking 2 inches. As we know that big coil is not the best for iron site work but its pretty dang good for its size on recovery speed from one target to another.Yet its not a blending type unit so it relies on gated audio.Much like T2s CZs etc.So what I see in iron is those targets are or should of been got but the combination of bad dirt and iron leech halos shut some targets down.I'm sure they were not severely masked in terms of abundance of nails etc on top of the targets and a good machine should of already got them.its the machines ability to handle or see through the halo fusion of iron soil and iron oxides meshed. Now this is all in my head but I know what i seem to be seeing. And its a thought process I have had for along time wanting a unit to be built that would combat it somewhat. That's my biggest enemy bad dirt lots of iron.. I know the beach hunters want a large coil.I want a small coil!!!I want to fully see what this unit will do in bad iron bad dirt mix..It may not be what it was designed for?? but it has something going on in iron.It needs to be explored further. Once I knew the sound of a legitimate target to a false the unit has became very conveying in iron. Its actually less noisy than most machines in iron its just the compressed audio traits are the learning curve.A user who dissects iron with vlfs will find the Tarsacci is well behaved comparatively speaking but you have to figure the audio out. I see what the unit is doing now we have to apply it.Learn it.Dont think old school think new school. It can feel alien but its doing something.First few hours I ran it actually first whole battery charge I was so disconnected from the soil I was almost depressed about it.but let it sink in.I like to have a connection to the soil and the Tarsacci to me was Chinese talk with a poor translator..Now its starting to feel more English to me.Well maybe Brooklyn accent English..I need it to get to Southern accent English LOL..I'm joking but I'm excitedly waiting for it to become second nature to me ,become my friend. I will also add I was at a disadvantage for the first few days.I was using a Bad coil.Yet wasnt sure it was bad.BUT after I got the coil fixed and sorted out the noise I was enduring dropped dramatically.BUT the first coil had taught me somewhat how to figure out hits.once I got a PROPER coil the intelligence level went up.And the language took off.So I had a handicap to start with but it actually helped me..A user coming to the Tarsacci will not see what I saw.And actually it is not that hard to digest the audio when its running right.Sort of like a FBS unit we had to learn the language. Its different BUT IT WORK'S!
