  1. Found this tiny 1.1 gram 18K in the wet sand over the weekend. Looks like diamond chips all around the band but too small to test. Bob K

  2. Approximately 3 hour hunt (one battery), about 2 hours in the water in the Gulf. Water was almost flat with a slight current, bottom was rippled. This particular beach doesn't get many tourists and is somewhat out of the way, I didn't expect a lot of targets. Since I still have loads to learn on the machine, I didn't spend a whole lot of time with any specific setting as I was trying to see what adjustments did what. Hunted in all metal the entire hunt. I found you really need to hunt slow to avoid any rising threshold due to swinging into deeper water. Sensitivity adjustments and delay adjustments helped. The machine was more than useable in the water with the exception of the coil connector when it enters/exits the water. Odd thing on that was I thought I was shallow enough but the connector sticks out a good ways..... The tent stakes, sinker, and bottle caps were from the wet sand. The few other targets were from the water waist to chest deep. The dime seemed to be the deepest target at about 3 scoops deep give or take. There was no mistaking the ring as a target, it wasn't a whisper at all.....got it with the second scoop. Pinpointing the target prior to digging was easier with the 12" coil then I had thought it would be. Balance on this machine is really good for wet/dry hunting, however, it did take a few adjustments to my typical hunting style to have good coil control in the water, it does show you how "bad" your normal coil control may be.... You sure don't have to worry about when the battery is getting low, it lets you know when it is time to change batteries or go home! All in all, I'm liking this machine so far.... Cliff

  3. Did a late run at the local park, was dark so I was just picking some obvious targets. One area had some very old trees that had been taken down leaving some deep roots and for some reason there is a good amount of iron where the old oaks were so I tossed the Gold Racer into disc 2, kicked the sensitivity to 85 and upped the id to 25 trimming much of the chatter out. Knew I had a dime but didn't realize it was a silver until I got home and dumped my pouch out. Few months ago I did pick out an 1906 IH that was in fair shape.

  4. Kac I’m sorry to be the one to inform you that’s not a old coin . I was born in 1941 so you can see where I’m coming from. Great find and the best thing it’s silver. My hair what little I have on my head is silver too . Chuck

  5. I got my first chance to take the Apex out for a test drive in a local park. I chose U.S. Coins mode because the area I was hunting is home to a Carnival with Rides and Game Booths every year. I must say, it ran fairly quiet until it hit a target. I will most likely use Zero in the future as the “Pre-set” modes may have more discrimination than I’m used to. Or I could “Accept” some of the blocked-out segments to create a “Custom” Program. Overall impressions: Simple, nice and light weight, well balanced, easy to adjust settings plus the Wireless Audio that you can hear your Pin Pointer through! However, I watched a You Tube video of a hunt at a Boy Scout Camp. The videographer mentioned that the Depth Gauge seemed to be “off”. I experienced the same issue. One target read 4” when it was right under the surface. This happened more than once. My 1.5 hours netted me some Clad coins, a Cinemark Token, a Fleur-de-lis snap or button cover and three strange washers. I only found one other piece of “junk” which appears to be cast Aluminum. Comparing it to the Minelab Equinox Series would be a bit unfair. While they share similarities like Simultaneous MF, GB, Noise Cancel (Frequency Shift) and Preset Programs including Beach Mode, that’s where it ends. The Nox has way more Features and Adjustments putting in a completely different league altogether! The APEX is simply an entry level Multi-Frequency Metal Detector for those starting out or an upgrade for the many Ace Enthusiasts. I’ve mostly worked with the White’s TRX which reads off the tip. It will take some time getting used to the 360 degrees of the Garrett and Nokta Pin Pointers. My only real concern other than the Depth issue is what problems, if any, may occur due to them being put together so quickly to fill the many preorders and back orders.

  6. Joe It wouldn’t take me long to work around that little problem. Those sandals on my feet would be coils and that look alike radio is my detector. They be pointing at me laughing and not even notice what I have hanging around my neck . I’m not at my best without clothing. Chuck

  7. 2 reasons both related to the Value that the Apex brings to the table vs. similarly priced competition: #1 - Having a stable beach detector (a la Vanquish) #2 - Getting a relatively inexpensive detector that you can run over a range of individual frequencies (a la Equinox 600, but $250US cheaper). I know I sound like a broken record, but people are really sleeping on this feature which I consider even more significant than SMF on the Apex and something (along with the ability to ground balance) that the Vanquish does not have. Also, wireless audio is really starting to become a popular and standard feature the Ace series does not have without investing another $100 in a 3rd party or Garrett wireless bolt on accessory. Overall, features wise, it is a pretty signficant upgrade over the older Aces without much additional investment. Not a bad move for an existing Ace user and they still have the Ace as a backup.

  8. This is a video that Garrett has done in response to some of the user videos made about the new Apex. It’s possible this was posted before and I missed it... been busy lately! “Iron targets can “mask” or change the Target ID of adjacent good treasure targets. Two examples of target masking are presented, along with a demonstration of successfully scanning coins mixed into a row of nails. Although the presence of iron can change a target’s ID, this video shows how easy the Garrett Apex can pick out the treasures in such trashy detecting environments.”

  11. Hello all, We have been having some major surf from a hurricane spinning out in the Atlantic near Bermuda, as well as the time of year that we get King Tides! Depending on the wind direction, this can be a really productive time to beach hunt! Unfortunately the wind has been blowing directly on shore, which only makes for a wide flat beach, and few targets! I made the trek to Vero beach yesterday, as well as many other detectorists, to try and get an elusive piece of 1715 Wreck Treasure! There are a lot of locals who work these beaches, and have a tremendous advantage! For me, it's about an hour and a half drive North! So unfortunately, i don't get to do it often! The tide was already incoming when the park gate's opened, and with the short beach's, did not allow for much time to detect! Not that it mattered, there were few to no targets to be had! Sand was being pulled out by the strong high tides, but was being deposited as a secondary break for the waves, which was killing any more good erosion! The few guy's i talked to were just as aware of the poor condition of the beaches, but said it was good practice! Everyone just wants to get out and detect, after all this time indoors, from the heat, and pandemic! I did find some interesting iron targets on the intercoastal side of one beach, but i don't think they are super old! Picked them up anyway, so i wouldn't be skunked! But the weather was beautiful, and not as humid, for once in about 8 months! Great way to start Fall here! Hopefully a few "Winter" storms this season will give us Florida boy's and girl's, and any of you visiting, a chance for some "Reale" Treasure!! 🌊👍👍

  15. I am disappointed in the Xterra having become obsolete. After swinging some Garrett and white units I got my first Xterra from Gerrys detectors in Idaho who is a dealer here on this forum back in 2008. As soon as I went out swinging that light weight and easy to read machine it was a complete change in my finds for the better. Then I added a DD coil and it got even better. I finally settled on the small 6 inch HF coil as my primary hunting coil. It did not get fantastic depth but was good for mild soil like I have here. It sure picked out the silver around old houses.

  16. RR, We have that problem at Cape Canaveral, being a National Seashore! With the added problem of being a high security zone! I guess that's why they allow the North End to be a nudist beach! Security know's that those individuals aren't concealing any weapons!!🤗👍👍

  17. Joe D Thanks for all the pictures. Like Mel Fisher he started the day always with a positive note . I too do the same bye saying this day is the day. Texas has a treasure coast and all know the location of the ships. The only little problem we have on getting to it is it’s a National Sea Shore now. If they catch you detecting there they don’t put you in jail they put you under the jail. I told my wife about the time I need to be put in a Rest home drag me off down there with a metal detector in hand. This way I’ll have a place to stay and she won’t have to pay for it. Chuck

  19. A long answer to a short question. The supplied White's headphones are decent, they will do the job. If you are out of the water then use the adapter cable if you already have 'high end' headphones. If not the White's are ok. Because I have a 'collection' of machines I have also quite a few headphones. I've been detecting since the early 80's, only in the last few years did I purchase the Sunray Pro Gold headphones. So in comparison to Sunray the White's are just Ok, but compared to what I was using years ago, they are very good.. Any headphone set will be much better than the inbuilt speaker. At the end of the day the key is to get the coil over the target. Normally I wait for things to wear out before looking to upgrade, that has been the way with home appliances and metal detector headphones. With White's going out of business I need to look to the future when my GMX is still going strong, but the factory headphones are looking worse for wear. Hence the focus on the Grey Ghost Amphibians, get them while you can... Can always modify gear to fit later on as well using the White's set for parts.. Because none of my current machines have inbuilt wireless audio, the addition of Z link and the Quest wireless system allowed me to enjoy the benefits of modern convenience while continuing on with my older machines. My GMX will see use as a 'backpacking' detector, going into remote areas where the factory waterproof headphones make good sense, as do the Grey Ghosts. Neither the Quest or Z link are robust enough to perform such duties. Both the Quest and Z link systems are compatible with all my Tdi machines, XL Pro, MXT etc. No audio issues or problems so far, wireless headphones are great. Simply plug into any USB port to recharge at the end of the day, at home or in the car. Even use a portable power bank which works perfectly. With a waterproof detector wireless will not always be the first choice. Finally every time I buy a machine I allow a bit extra for bits and pieces so that I can 'adapt' the detector to better fit my needs. Neoprene covers from the UK to protect the screen, Doc's arm cuff cover, folding detector stand.. None of these things are necessary, the motivation is 'want' not 'need'. In my experience the machine works better after the personal touch.. So that is partly true for the Grey Ghost Amphibians.. with a noticeable performance increase over the factory headphones. Quality has a price attached. The package deal from Whites with the adapter cable, headphones and the two coils was great. No 'need' to go and spend more money. If you want better audio with a small gain in performance, then in my experience it requires an additional investment more often than not.

  20. - They were the first manufacturer to put pulse induction into a hand held pin-pointer I think that was DetectorPro and the Pistol Probe - They were the first manufacturer to have a USB rechargeable pin-pointer Could be, not sure - They were the first manufacturer to put Li-Ion batteries internally into a detector I'm guessing that was XP - They were the first manufacturer to make dedicated wireless systems for detector users White's was first with dedicated high speed wireless headphones, unless you mean generic boxes that work on anything.

  26. https://codan.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2020/08/FINAL-INVESTOR-PRESENTATION-20-Aug-20.pdf Metal detector sales up 30% (Recreational 11%, Gold Prospecting 42%) - Africa is the largest market by far (due to gold prospecting detectors) - New gold prospecting model coming GPX 6000 - X-Terra and Safari discontinued - Thirty million invested in Engineering / R&D. No wonder the competition can't keep up! I found it interesting that even with the new Vanquish and Equinox, sales growth is heavily weighted to the gold prospecting models, illustrating the relative size of the markets. The big money is in gold prospecting detectors, as further evidenced by sales in Africa in particular. And although a new GPX model is specifically indicated, there is no such hint about a new coin detector release soon. FY21 OUTLOOK Well positioned for FY21: • Strong start to the year and in line with FY20 • Demand for our metal detection products remains strong • Minelab will benefit from a full year of Vanquish® sales and the release of a new gold detector • Current travel restrictions may impact Tactical Communications business development • Minetec is expected to return to profitability • Strong balance sheet allows us to explore strategic opportunities Business update at virtual AGM on 28th October 2020

  27. Wish you would have joined here and said that a few years ago. I bought the X-T 705 with stock 7.5 kHz concentric, then got the two Coiltek 3.0 kHz DD's (6" Digger and 15"), next the ML 7.5 kHz 6" concentric, and finally the ML 19 kHz 6" DD. It took that long (and that much $!!!) for me to find a coil that I liked for coin hunting. I later added the stock (for the Gold detecting option) ML 5"x9" 19 kHz DD. So you and I ended up at the same place! A legitimate complaint of the X-T, as I'm sure you are aware, was that you had to buy a different coil to change frequency. The iron wraparound of both lower frequencies drove me crazy. If I knew then what I know now, maybe I could have worked around that. I also finally learned after trying to beat my head against the concentric wall that I'm a DD person, exclusively. But the Digger coil had the worst wraparound so it wasn't the coil configuration that caused me problems. I've since heard more compliments of the gold prospecting side of the X-T 705 than the coin hunting mode, but that may be as much because this site leans toward that kind of detecting (although that has changed a lot lately). I did OK with that the X-T 705 in spite of my issues with wraparound, but once I got the Fisher F75 the X-T was relegated to mothballs. I even canabalized it to convert my ML Equinox to an S-shaft. (I made sure to keep that reversible, though, in case I need to resurrect the X-T someday.) Thanks for the reminders (I guess 🥴).

  28. It’s said the Mini for 4 to 8 and the Midi for 8 to 12 years of age . Running at 15 KHz and good to three feet of you want to get it wet. It’s amazing how much these kid’s detectors has to offer, Tones discrimination and pinpoint all for so little money., I like the Mini with a sad face If the target not good and the happy face if it’s a good target.haha Chuck

  32. I want to like the above two posts but I'm on "like" probation until tomorrow. (Thanking too many people on their response to my odd 2-cent piece beach find). See how I turned that into cheap self promotion. Anyway, in focusing on Simon's comment, I forgot to also thank Walt for his review and congrats on the nice finds. Nail board tests etc. notwithstanding - the Apex will hold its own under most detecting situations based on what I have seen of the unbiased "real world" in-the-field videos so far. But there are definitely higher priced detectors that do beat it on separation, discrimination, tones, and other features such as multiple SMF profiles.

  33. Which is more than you can usually say for Minelab.
    1 point
  34. Yep, this is a fairly common problem. In some detectors such as the XP Deus, adding some discrimination, while still allowing the iron to be heard via iron volume helps to mitigate this phenomenon versus running with zero disc.

  36. A few updates made to the original post. I indicated that the SignaGraph display was originally developed for the White's XLT. Not quite. White's was a genuine innovator in digital metal detecting, with the first true digital model, the White's Eagle. As shared in Mark's notes, the original Eagle models had a very basic display. The SignaGraph first appeared in the last version of the Eagle, the Eagle Spectrum, the first White's detector to bear the Spectrum moniker. The SignaGraph was thought of as a "Phase Spectrum Analyzer", and that is where the "Spectrum" part of the name derives from. The Eagle Spectrum had the old larger control box powered by four C cells. The Eagle Spectrum was very short lived however, as this is when White's was making the move to smaller control boxes powered by eight AA batteries. This set the stage for most everything else that followed, and the White's XLT was one of the first beneficiaries of the new design. The slimmed down Eagle Spectrum powered by eight AA batteries and with a better LCD display was renamed the Spectrum XLT, and then simply XLT. Here is the ad for the new Eagle Spectrum touting the new SignaGraph display. Click for a larger version. And here is the Eagle Spectrum owner's manual, where one can see the basics of what later became the XLT, then DFX, and the V series.

  37. I have bought the trond transmitter that Chase referred to and got some aukey ear buds that Dan told me about and by adjusting the volume they will work. I haven't paired my ml80's back up and tried adjusting the volume but they would not work. Paired fine but the sound was not right.

  38. I have a DFX. When I first purchased it I read the Owners Manual but much was over my head at the time. Purchased " Digging deeper with the DFX" by Jeff Foster. That helped a lot, and I was very impressed with that detector. I understand much more due to this site. Thanks!

  39. Bit of low water at the town water supply, can't wade there but had some shorline to poke around. Tough with all the rocks they added to combat the erosion taking my time payed off. Should be more to pick out amongst the sinkers, miserable 22 casings etc. Used the Makro Gold Racer for this hunt. I like the stable id's and smooth threshold, ground is all over the place from 20's-80's and lots of natural iron.

  43. Lanny I assure you I too dream of the perfect lightweight form factor detector that has the performance we’ve all become accustomed to since ML released its first PI back in 1995. Hopefully new ML detectors coming out will follow the Equinox 800 which eloquently combines both desires/needs.😎 JP

  46. I've conversed with Monte a few times about these videos that Garrett released and why Garrett seems to do so much better than what I got or even he got. I think I already posted (I can't remember) about my nail board being smaller than the official Monte Nail Board so Monte sent me one. Sure enough the Apex does do better on his official sized board I can get 6 out of 8 rather than 4 out of 8. But on the flip side the Simplex and the F19 do even better. The other thing that makes the Apex perform better in iron is coil height above the ground. We found that if you hold the coil approximately 3.5-4 inches about the nail board or the line of nails and coins the Apex does much better. Now in the real world I don't go around swinging my coil that far off the ground, 2 inches at most. But at least the info is there if you happened to need better performance. Obviously that's only going to work for surface targets.

  47. Yes havingstl the idea was to use 6 inch concentric or mono coils, all the same size as far as possible. The GMX and Tdi coils are flat profile and the older Eclipse 5.3 and Black MaX 5.3 are fat or chunky with dead air. Watched the White's video with different machines but also different coils, didn't want to make the same mistake... Loving the Gmx flat profile concentric, a real must have. All the best.
