  1. We had been finding some minnie balls at a location but today it had something else show up. It was a first for me.

  2. This year has been a lot of ups and downs in getting some detecting in for coins, relics and gold nuggets. With the pandemic, restrictions placed by the pandemic, fires, detector coils issues and finally my father passing at the end of July made it hard to get some serious detecting outings in. Luckily the local parks are still giving up a few old coins. We made a trip to the mountains before my father passed and did some relic hunting at an old mining camp and found a few tokens and relics. At least it rain a little bit every day to make the smoke from the fires more bearable. Finally we were able to get a trip in to do some nugget hunting. I and my wife arrived at our camping spot on a late Monday afternoon. We decided to have an early dinner and then do some scouting around the area that we hunt deciding on which areas we wanted to hunt first the following day. Finishing up dinner, I went out to get the UTV ready and a young woman drives up on a ATV to our camping area requesting help with her father-in-law who just rolled an ATV. It was about a five minute ride from where we were camped where the accident occurred. Her father-in-law had been unconscious for couple of minutes but was now sitting up in the middle of the road asking the same questions over and over every thirty seconds. He had some cuts to his forehead and road rash on his back and legs. I looked over to where the ATV was parked and it looked like it faired pretty well. Then I looked down beside the ATV and there was his helmet in three different pieces. He was in a lot of pain and didn’t want to get up or move around. I suggested that we not to try and move him and contact search and rescue to help. Unfortunately there is no cell service for miles in that area, so the daughter-in-law and I take off to try to find some help. There is a sand and gravel operation near where we were camped and thought there might be someone around that could help. It was early evening and several vehicles and equipment were scattered around, but no one working out in the equipment yard. We drove up to one of the cabins and luckily someone was home and had a landline to make a call. The whole ordeal took search and rescue about two and half hours to get in and get him out, but they felt he was going to be ok. The strangest thing to come out of this accident was he was driving the ATV at a high rate of speed over washouts across the road and catching air for thrills and they video it on their camera for all to see and remember. Well 2020 mark thirty years of metal detecting for gold specimens in this area, adding a few years more before that using sluices, high-bankers and gold pans. Every year we have come away with some gold. On this trip our first day both I and my wife got skunked. Second day my wife decided to stay back at camp and recoup from hiking and detecting at 11,000 ft. I was lucky and found one within forty-five minutes and glad as I didn’t want to go home skunked. That was the only nugget I found that day. Third day I hunted three hours before the smoke from the fires was expected to roll in and I ended up not find any. It’s a small one and happy to have found it as the odds were stacking up against me of getting any gold this year. Here are pictures of the gold before cleaning with a little limonite on the front and back side of the specimen and then I used a little acid to remove the limonite.

  4. I was showing my orx and deus lite to a friend and he wanted to buy the orx so I sold it and bought the deus controller. He loves the orx (so did I) and now I'm really liking the deus. I've been using 5-G-MAXX and checking each target with 6-DEEP (xy screen)to see the correlation between the two on targets. It takes very little effort to switch back and forth and I think I'm starting to see the difference between good targets and bad ones.(after a LOT of digging) I say lot of digging but I've only been out with it twice. Anyways, after hitting the signal I knew it wasn't a coin but the XY screen said better investigate...glad I did. My first Civil War spur. I think the extra info you get really helps with the dig or not dig decisions we all have to make. Just some thoughts so far using my Deus. Any advice appreciated! Thanks! Tom

  5. Fisher is not likely to make any comment. Since I am the only dealer I can at least say how many units have shipped. 24 units have been shipped. No week so far has exceeded 4 units and several weeks had none. I keep waiting for a steady flow, but so far that hasn’t happened.

  6. I had an unenforceable (badly written) 2 year NDA but even if enforceable would not have prevented me from designing a similar product, meaning a VLF pinpointer. Just not the same design. And since I did not write the TRX micro code, it would have been guaranteed to be a different design. But it still might have looked a bit dodgy so I chose a PI design to avoid any semblance of dodginess.

  7. My Opinion, I know I don't need it for the head phones I use. Would it help with the stock head phones .... not much since I think the "AQ" Audio is on the edge of being perfect. Volume, Threshold adjustments could not be better. Now the problem lies in the head phones. Being able to block all of the outside noise (Amblient noise). And the noise with in the audio of the machine itself. "other noise" To show what I am talking about, my head phones are so loud and with the adjustments on the AQ very defined there would be no need. Only thing need is a on/off volume toggle for those moments audio is not needed. Stock Head Phones on a selected target at 4 inch's target DB is 90/91 Skullie Head Phones I use 105/106 db's Then add in the amplified audio of the AQ all is needed is the fine tuning adjustments of Threshold and Volume. To show how a good set of head phones can add to the depth...also note total silence back ground allows faint to be heard and the clean audio of the excalibur. Being able to distinguish them from the "other noise".

  8. I had a chance to hit a beach for about 6 hours, so I loaded up and headed out. Not a very low tide, so I decided to try and run the Fisher Impulse AQ in all metal mode and see what turned up. I started with what little wet sand I had, and then went dry sand to purge the beach of trash. I wanted to see how the machine would handle a 7us delay, all metal, ATS at 0, sensitivity from 4-7, threshold barely heard, and noise cancelled best at 7 or 7.5 position. Disc was set to 4 when I checked some targets in tone and mute modes. I was not expecting any gold since this area is still sanded in heavily. I did manage to get some copper pennies and degraded coins that were brought back in at some point. Always a good sign to see coins degraded that much since they have been around a long time. No lead was found, so that tells you a bit about the condition of the beach. Decent amount of coins, a really corroded silver chain (I am assuming). I did not have my test kit handy, so I sanded a bit if the chain to reveal a silver color. Not aluminum, probably not nickel or zinc, not steel, so silver is my best guess. Can any of you AQ guys and girls tell me what settings you would think get the deepest all metal depth on dry sand and on wet sand? Hoping I had picked the right combination of settings for that type of hunting. This week there are some better tides coming, so I am planning on 2 days out to see what I can get.

  9. Thanks Jim...Wishing you many great finds with the extra hunting time. Be Safe and Good Luck.. Just to let those have put in orders for, No one is forgotten. Just hit a little bump in the road (delay) due to a family members illness. Not me...Hopefully things will improve and I can finish all orders by the end of the month. Thank you.. Joe

  10. Most of my gold came from the SDC, my first real gold detector. Its my go to machine before the GPZ and still to this day it found my largest chunk! If the Z could get an 8” coil, I might finally sell it.

They also have some level of sweat and moisture resistance as IPX6 rated. The neckband ones have $30 off coupon if you are Amazon Prime which is an incredible deal. I don't know much about the MEE audio buds other than they do have Aptx-ll which is essential for detecting because of the minimal lag. Earbuds (vs. Headphones) that support APTX-LL are just hard to come by these days for whatever reason. The popular Equinox user APTX-LL earbuds by Sounpeats are no longer available. There are no "true wireless" (i.e., no wire between the buds) APTX-LL BT earbuds that I can readily find. HTH

  13. My only comment on G-Maxx (if you are using the default settings) is that the recovery speed of 1 is a little low in the event you do get into thick targets/junk, but you are maximizing depth with that setting. Relic targets of brass and lead tend to "like" the higher frequencies more (18 khz, 25 khz), G-Maxx default frequency is 8 khz which is a good general purpose, middle-of-the-road frequency, but buttons my be more responsive to the higher frequencies. For these reasons, I lean towards Deus fast at 18 khz. Deus fast also sets silencer to -1 (off) which tends to reduce ferrous masking vs. 2 for G-Maxx. Silencer is great for breaking up bottlecap signals, which ring up nice and high otherwise, but if bottlecaps are scarce, I rather have silencer off. Finally, G-Maxx also uses zero iron volume. Some level of iron volume (even with iron disc'd out) can be good when canvassing a site. It can clue you in to concentrations of nails that might be indicative of a former dwelling or structure. Anyway, great find, and just some suggestions. But if you are happy with G-Maxx as is, for now, stick with it rather than trying to shoehorn in someone else's recommended alternative settings (like mine). HH

  15. Hit the river as the tide was on the way in and got a few digs in. Large plate looks like it was for a mail slot. Might have come from an old colonial up the road based on the #. Small bronze or brass buckle maybe from a satchel or something, small what seems to be a pewter button which is probably the oldest of the finds but I have no idea the age on it. The religious pendant seems to be brass and has 2 different characters one on each side. Glass door knob guessing late 1800's. Last is a brass plate with the words Radio Corporation on the bottom but can't make out the other text above, guessing it is from one the old tube radios with wood case probably 1940's? Not that it matters but used the Multi Kruzer 14khz and jumped between all metal and 3 tone.

  18. Hi , here in France most Deus users use the Deus Fast nr3 mode which is , as says Chase , excellent in iron trashed areas with its 18khz freq and very good elsewhere. I did not really try the Gmaxx nr5 mode 8khz because Deus fast is already perfect for what I am doing , Probably Gmaxx is more suitable for big targets at depth in low iron trashed areas with its 8khz relatively low freq. Nice find your Civil war spur btw ...

  21. In "SDC territory" no other machine is a match. I would never sell mine. The rumor is that the 6000 is as easy to use as the SDC and GM, but more powerful. Well, unless it's foldable, small and fitting in my backpack the SDC will be the king of the hill for the backpacker.

  22. Stock Excal Vs Stock Nox... I would say they are close. What's killing the fresh drop gold is the amount of Nox's out there.. the good is they are not listening for those deep targets.

  24. We don’t know when the final version will go on sale, but it will cost significantly more than the AQ Limited. The price on the Ltd. was likely “break even” or close to it in order to induce early buyers to participate in the sort of “pre-launch”. It is unique as far as I know in detectorland to do this kind of “public beta” like move.

  25. Same here! I drag it along on trips Incase my 7000 craps out. And I have used it in extremely rugged terrain where the 7000 is a pain. Also had luck w 2300 on drywasher piles/dig piles getting small pickers. Toyed w the thought of selling mine recently, but for all these reasons decided to hang on to it!

  27. The AQ is not designed to be used with the control pod removed from the handle. LE JAG has apparently “modded” his so that they can be separated. I know nothing about what is involved in doing that, but it would likely end your warranty - of course that’s not a problem for LE JAG.

Found while detecting the beach, this is a German-fired Czech 10cm VZ21n fuze, for the Skoda Houfnice light field howitzer VZ 14/19 (given the German designation 10cm LeFH 14/19 (t) ) It would have been fired in preparation for the defense of the island of Jersey, Channel Islands, from allied attack. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Skoda_houfnice_vz_14http://michaelhiske.de/Allierte/UK/Handbook/Pamphlet01/01_008.HTM

I don't know which site these photos were taken from, I don't know if you have already seen them, I must say Ukrainian technicians are really good at modifying metal detectors, but my question is : why ML didn't think of such a thing ? Single keyboard for all commands, no mechanical keys that can break easily, all reach of your thumb finger, simple!

  33. Likewise, I too can see so many similarities in finds between the US and here for the same period. Mind you I have found an 1800's Indian Head and an 1830's US Eagle Naval buckle here in Oz as well, most likely left behind by US gold miners trying their luck in Oz. Many of these older house sites do have separate stables, denoted by iron and lots of horse tack, buckles and lead rosettes lying around. Am still pondering on whether to buy the 6" coil for the Nox, or just see what turns up the stock coil for now. Just have to be careful on where I tread due to many snakes being on the move now heading into Spring. Here's a large Tiger Snake I came across on previous trip - usually sits in the top ten most venomous snakes in the world.😬

  34. Agree, you seldom see the rowel intact. Great find, Tom! Though, I don't really mind digging minie balls all day, the spur tells you that there must be some buttons and other goodies there too so keep pounding that site.

  41. If I couldn't see the details of the coins and token, I wouldn't be able to discern that this is an Australian site as opposed to one in the USA. Eating utensils, shotgun shell butts, harmonica reed, metal buttons,... so much in common. Maybe that particular spur would clue in an expert/collector of horse tack, though? I see at least one bottle stopper, maybe a second. The turquoise one at least should be meanigful to someone with the matching bottle. Thanks for the display.

  43. a disc guard is useless on impulse the resin is very strong and as a general rule, disc protectors should be avoided on a beach finder or stick them and make them waterproof salt and sand passing between the coil and protecting it screen and make you lose performance ...

  44. To give you an idea of what types of targets were previously cleaned out of the same site with the Deus, here's a few pics for comparison - and yes I dig everything in the search for elusive the gold coin. I do consider myself to be pretty thorough, though you never get everything even after multiple visits (and due to many other contributing factors). If anything there seems to be the perception so far that the Nox 600 punches very deep on the sandy/loamy soils around here, even on the highest reactivity setting. Thankfully there is very little local mineralisation to deal with other than pockets of ash/basaltic material from nearby volcanoes, hence cranking up the sensitivity still has the Nox running very stable and quiet on the cleaner ground away from the iron ridden house site. One thing I did have a little difficulty with at first was the perception of depth via the audio, some of those .22 casings and lead targets banged through nice and loud, and from a lot deeper than first thought, so yes it does real well on the small low to mid conductors. Happy hunting!

  45. Weather here has just been too damn nice to call the season over just yet. Managed to get out this week on Tues. and Wed. and scrounged up 2 pieces on Tues. and 15 on Wed. Supposed to be another nice week ahead after rain this weekend? Hopefully a few more hunts before I call it....

  46. Finally I was able to get to a beach after their season ended. I used the AQ in all metal and mute modes. I could not use the tone mode since I was way too close to the Acela high speed train. Most of the trains that run that rail don't affect my pulse machines too much, but when the Acela hits the rails, it's a no go for any machine. The AQ handled it a bit better than my GPX does. But you still have to hear the interference and at times you just can't hunt. I hunted for 5 1/2 hours with the AQ (2 3/4 hrs per each battery). The low tide was exceptionally "high" at +0.9. This did not allow me to get much wet sand, so most of the hunt is in dry sand and any wet sand I could find. This is just the first part of the hunt involving the AQ. I hunted another 3 1/2 hours with the GPX not shown here. I have a lot to learn, so I am digging every target. I am getting better at knowing hair pins, as I could call most of them before I dug them. Bottle caps are a different story, as the only idea they might be bottle caps was the extremely strong and wider signal. But I think a gold ring a 2" would sound the same? I should be able to get out again soon and hit a very good low tide, so I will have better information on how I do in the iron and wet sand. I did manage to get a small silver ring, some bling jewelry and a lot of exercise! Settings were Carolina's settings. Thanks man! I ran at 7.5us most of the time. I still like how the AQ responds and feels generally. Only real drawback is swapping out a battery making sure no sand gets into the connections. For those that have way more experience on the AQ than I do, have you found the depth on dry sand to be equal or less than wet sand?
