  1. As a few of you may know October in the High Desert is the time to be there! This October, I hardly seen another prospector! Seen, more folks scouting for hunting season than anything. I gave a few Chuckar & Antelope Hunters a pointy finger. But, the Goldfields pretty much empty and to myself. Well, with the Sun setting earlier and 7 pm, just a little early to rack out. I bought a big Black Light Flashlight, to hunt some glow in the dark rocks for our new rock garden area of our backyard. It was fun, riding the RZR around the desert at night shining that light off to the side. Seen all kids of stuff that reflects at night. Some I didn’t bother picking up as you can see. I need to find some other glow in the dark minerals other than Orange, lol. But, my 2 days was spent collecting a few nuggets also. There’s gold out there, just need to get your coil over them...Until the next Hunt! Rick

  2. Tides were decent this past week, so I took 2 days to hunt 2 different beaches with the AQ. While the tide was high, I would detect with the GPX 5000 or the Equinox 800, so I could conserve battery time for the AQ. These finds pictured are all found with the AQ. First beach was disappointing, as the low tide did not expose any rocks or clay. This beach just doesn't want me to hunt the good areas 😄 Beach two was better hunt with all day rain to keep the gawkers away. This hunt was interesting, and I was able to shed some light on how the AQ will perform for my style of beach hunting. Both day's hunts were mainly using Tone Mode, so I could hear both the accepted and rejected targets. I did this since both beaches can produce silver, plus I was interested to see the cut off between reject and accept, for the settings I had. The most telling were the sinkers, as some came in high tone and the larger ones came in at a low tone. Beach two also showed that location matters, even on the same beach. One section produced zinc pennies, and scraps of aluminum cans. But the other section produced heavy targets, with a lot of lead. That section I was only able to detect for about 1 hour as the beach was about to close down for the night. No gold, but the lead and nickels says that I was close. If my coil would have come over gold I would have heard it loud and clear. All those targets screamed out loud. I will hit that area again when time permits.

  3. In my last thread I posted about finding half of a Cartier bracelet. I searched and searched on multiple hunts for the matching half but couldn't find it. However, in my efforts to find the rest of the bracelet I did stumble upon a few other good finds. The top/middle ring really had me thinking that I had hit the jackpot. It looked so beautiful and had markings on the inside of it. About an hour after I found it I took a closer look and saw the "ALE" stamp which I learned here means it was a Pandora- still a hundred dollar ring but not the incredible find I thought it was. The 2 silver colored bands on the other hand were the real deal. Both are 14K white gold although in the darkness I couldn't tell if they might be fresh-dropped silver. Even though the "Apple" cell was found under water it must have been a recent drop as it is the cleanest one I have ever found. It doesn't power up so I'm not sure what to do with it- try and charge it? The Barber dime was actually found, I think, on the same day I found the half-bracelet. I didn't know until a few days later when I was going through my coins and found what looked like an encrusted silver dime. After breaking it open I was surprised to see the characteristic "one dime" stamp on the coin's reverse but the front of the dime is completely unrecognizable. I still hope to find the rest of that Cartier bracelet someday but even if I don't, it's encouraging to know that there are other amazing finds out there that I might stumble upon while looking for it. GL&HH!

  4. I agree with LuckyLundy (Rick) about the RZR 570. It's small, fits in my truck, hauls all my gear and wife and goes anywhere I dare to go. Saves a lot wear and tear on my truck.

  5. Hi everyone 😎 Hope y’all are doing well, This wasn't the best year personally and as such, I only got to hunt a couple weeks( one hour in early morning and sometime one hour in night) Here’s pics and thank you for reading and looking at my post🙂 Well, many scientists are confused about the secret and source of geomagnetism. there're many planets much larger than the earth, but they have no magnetic field at all. So, what's the secret behind geomagnetism? about 300 years ago, the queen of England's physician; William Gilbert, said something out of mere geussing, he said "The Earth moves as if it had a magnet within!" That was mere guessing, without any scientific proof. Hundreds of years before that, the chinese had invented the compass, it's a chinese invention. Then, the compass was use in Europe, where it had a great role in developing navigation. Yet, people remained confused about why the compass always points to the North. It was suggested the polar star might be pulling it in that direction, which is not logical, because if it were true, the compass needle'd be directed upwards, but actually, it's the apposite; it points downwards. Secondly, a compass doesn't point to the polar star att all. Compass dont point to the polar star and dont point to to the actual geographical North, either, rather, the point to something ele; the magnetic North pole. The difference between both is about 4 degrees. The polar star has nothing to do with compasses. So, what's the atory? It has took several years for technology to be progressed enough to allow the establishment of modern geomagnetism observatories where accurate studies are carried out. Later on, Scientists started talking about the center of the earth, where there's a central core of liquid iron, circulating deep down, which is associated with Earth's cycle of movement. That is the liquid iron circulates as Earth evolves. That circulating liquid iron contains convection currents. Those currents within that melted, liquid iron, whose temperature is very high, act like a coil which once electricity gors through it can magnetize iron rods in this case, the ferrous earth center gets magnetized, resulting in the Earth acting like a magnet with a magnetic fild, exactly like the magnetism experiments all learn and do at school. 7. Hey Guys/Gals, It's been a bit since I posted anything. The forums are very slow, at least mine here. I have to get all you guys/gals more fired up to post more stuff so we all can learn from each other and share experiences. That being said, the COVID-19 really changed how we do stuff, let alone set out mass FEAR to the World. There is no doubt it's real, but I will just leave it there and talk about gold nuggets! I managed to get out recently and had a nice run of luck with the Minelab GPZ 7000. I rounded up over an ounce in one day working any old channel. All the gold was down on bedrock and it was difficult to get some out of the cracks as they were covered and full of hard pack Caliche (notice the color or caliche on the gold). Just over 31 Dwt's (20 Dwt's = 1 Troy Ounce). Not a bad days work getting 1.5 ounces of the good stuff. God is Great. Rob

  8. Found yesterday on my local beach, these are sheathing tacks and a square nail from British fifth-rate, HMS Severn, which wrecked in a gale in December 1804. No lives were lost. The Lieutenant in charge at the time was exonerated at court martial and commended for getting the ship aground and saving the ship's stores.

  9. Oh, another thing about the RZR 570! Seems funny being the smallest of the models that it has the largest back storage of them! Motor is in rear and not under you so you can have a regular conversation without being drowned out with engine noise! Cover all open spaces under the seats with good duct tape to block dust (at least I think it helps 😂)

  10. The RZR 570 has 45 horsepower compared to the no longer made RZR 800 which had 53 horsepower. Payload capacity is 740 lbs. and towing capacity of 1500 lbs. Never had a problem with power, I've had the RZR 570 on 14,000 ft mountains. The low range has plenty of climbing power and the 50" width you can maneuver tight curves and trails. Had the RZR 570 for eight years and I've had no issues at all. Here's a picture of me loading into the truck.

  11. That specimen shows a lot of gold and is a keeper. I found a 3.2Kg (7lb) specimen a few years ago that had over 16+ oz of gold when crushed, but note it did not show as much gold as Gerry's Customer. So now I don't feel too bad belting sh!t out of it for the gold. 🤑 By the way the signal was very broad, and 18" deep with a ML3000 and 14"Elliptical coil.

  12. I know there is a premium price for Side by Sides down in your parts! To me they are just as important as your vehicle you use to get to the Gold Fields. I use my truck now as base camp, saving the fuel and wear and tear on it sitting. I got a 50” wide model so it fits right between the fender wells of my truck. Being so small, it will get you thru the trees of Northern California and wiggle in between the Sage Brush of the High desert. The engine in my RZR is a 570 goes plenty fast and gets crazy good gas mileage. Carries a ton of gear and hasn’t let me down. Rick

  13. Joe, as Dew stated, I am now using the TE's on the AQ. The stock phones I needed full volume and had the threshold up around 7, now I can run the volume where ever I want (normally 5-6) and the threshold can be lowered (for my hearing) to 4-5. I'd rather have some adjustment to make rather then run wide open as with the stock phones that came with my AQ.... I didn't however open the cups up to see if I have the dual piezos or not... I agree the TE's have a very clean audio which has helped me determine what I think is under the coil....I'm still digging the targets to verify my hunches. Still learning the machine but it is coming along. Cliff

  14. i'll attempt to answer everyone's questions is one thread. 1. i am in anchorage. i just retired from the USCG two weeks ago and decided to remain here in the last frontier. 2. i am a life long all around treasure hunting, prospecting, outdoors type. if it's of value i'll dig for it, metal detect, search for it, yard sale hunt, thrift store rummage, storage unit auction, etc etc. 3. i currently have only 2 detectors- a Garrett GTI 2500 and my trusty old Fisher Gold Bug II. a new coin/relic machine is in my near future. 4. i have more pans and sluice boxes than i probably should. 5. rocks are pretty and i've been known to carry more than i should down off some remote mountain. 6. i've been to adak. twice. once we got stuck for 9 days. that place feels like the edge of the earth. also some of the best ptarmigan hunting you could ever ask for. -bryan

  15. The 570, is small two large guys fit nicely or Wife and two small Dogs. I have mine with and aftermarket Rack on the rear for added storage! I have my gun rack on the Racks Bars with hold my 7000 with a death grip. I can set another detector between the Rack and the top roll cage...of course must have cooler. Tusk Storage bags inside keeps dust off things that don’t need to get dusty (TP). One of the most important things on any Side by Side is maintenance and service. One thing Polaris has is easy access to change your Drive Belt. I have other Buddies with different brands and to change a bad belt in the field is a major deal. The shocks on the 570 make it ride like a tank...that’s my next upgrade.

  16. The iron ID in multitone and mute mode is highly dependent on settings of ATS and degree of discrimination selected. It struggles with rusty bottle caps and rusty Bobby pins. With the increadibly reactive audio, linear iron - like nails etc. are even readily ID’d even in all metal. Of course that long nail with it’s double response might just be a gold chain! With a VLF discriminator, the same nail would ID as iron - but might be masking a gold ring! That situation would not happen with the AQ - you would hear both of the targets. No perfect detector exists

  17. Exactly described the key principle of the “jobs to be done” theory. Define the task, with full consideration of the desired outcomes, the limiting factors such as (in this case) bottom conditions, probable ratio of desirable to undesirable targets - then choose the correct tool for each phase of the “job to be done”. Even Homo Erectus had figured out how to hit a rock just right with another rock to produce the edge or point needed to kill or skin the prey!

  19. I hope my use of a well-recognized slogan doesn't result in a political discussion (or worse). Steve has made it clear that's not what this site is about. I don't know anything about White's political leanings, nor that of any other manufacturer, and I'd prefer maintaing my ignorance in that area. I consider detectorprospector.com kind of a club where everyone gets along. The best way to muck that up is to talk politics or religion. My bad, and I'm changing the original post.

  21. I get to share many more stories, photos and sometimes videos of amazing gold discoveries than the average person, mostly do to the fact I sell metal detectors and my customers are usually happy to share their Success stories. On occasion I get to see some finds that I can never show or share as the finder has asked that of me. Boy has there been some crazy amounts of gold being recovered with detectors still. Sure wish I could tell you all but I'd then piss off some of those who take me for my word and I'd prefer not to lose that friendship. My question is, what do you folks do when you find something substantial? Is it best to keep amongst your few inner circle or is it ok to let everyone know? Yes I want to share MD'ing finds as I sell detectors for a living, but also, I have personally been walked over for giving out to much info. I try to walk a fine line and keep everyone happy, if it's possible. I myself have been fortunate and found a few trophies and even caught a couple on video, but after viewing the video, realized the video could cause a mini gold rush. Do you share and tell all or keep most of your finds to yourself? I really don't think there is a right/wrong answer? Thanks for your input.

White’s, who had been in business since 1950 as a premier manufacturer of metal detection products, announced the suspension of operations on June 18, 2020 in a memo to its dealers. White’s founders, Kenneth and Olive White, built their business the same way Garrett’s founders, Charles and Eleanor Garrett, did, by innovating and committing to producing high quality products in the United States. White’s current principals, Kenneth R. and Mary White, are choosing to fold the White’s legacy in with Garrett Metal Detectors as a way of extending their “Made in the USA” tradition. Garrett CEO Steve Novakovich commented, “The White family and the Garrett family have had a high level of respect for one another as competitors in the sport market for decades. Now we at Garrett are proud to combine our respective legacies as Garrett continues on as the premier American metal detector company.” The transaction includes White’s trademarks, intellectual property, tooling, and other assets. It does not include White’s real estate in Oregon or Scotland. Garrett intends to rigorously defend all of White’s trademarks, patents, and other IP wherever infringement may occur. Novakovich continued, “Garrett recognizes that the White’s brand has a loyal following in the US and around the world. We are pleased to welcome those customers to Garrett, and we hope we can earn your future business.” Current White’s customers in need of repair or warranty service should contact: Centreville Electronics 9437 Main Street Manassas, VA 20110 (888)645-0202 (703)367-7999 centrevilleelectronics.net Centreville Electronics NW 1550 Maple Place Lebanon OR 97355 (541)409-7263 centrevilleelectronicsnw.com About Garrett Metal Detectors Garrett Metal Detectors, co-founded by electrical engineer Charles Garrett and fifth-generation educator Eleanor Smith Garrett, is a global leader in the design and manufacture of metal detection products for hobby, security, and law enforcement applications.. 23. Got my BBB (Beachnut Big Battery) 11 hour (est) run time battery today. Hope to give it a spin tomorrow. This should help me from having to backpack extra gear around for 3 1/2 hours or until the first battery quits me. I opted for the standard headphone connector to keep things simpler. The standard FT hearphones seem to sufficient at this point. Although I have been reading a lot on some of the threads about adapting other headphone for the AQ. That may be something I need to address down the road but not for now. I am just now starting to discern one target from another and don't want to start the learning curve again. LOL Thanks OBN for such a nice looking addition to my AQ. 11 hours is something FT really needs to think hard about now. Or at least the 8 hour version. That would be very do able I would think. I will keep you posted on run times. Joe PS: I am not sure why my pics are sideways.

  24. I've had may RZR 570 for eight years and still have the original belt. Most of my miles on my RZR are on rocky, slow crawling trails and mostly driven in low range. I do carry an extra belt and tools to do the job. I perform yearly maintenance and service, in addition on long extended trips I grease all the lube fittings. I check the belt when doing the yearly maintenance too see how it is wearing. The only thing I've replaced so far is the battery.

  26. Good choice you cant go wrong with that one .. 🙂 Just a few things I use my 540 with a V10 coil which is lighter and almost as deep as the V12 stock coil. I use the JEWELRY mode which I find better on iron trash areas than the COIN mode and also because the JEWELRY discri pattern is set from 0 to 40 that allows to pick up some old very small coins that display only +7 VDI ! With the COIN mode such very small coins would have been be notched out ... Looking forward for your feedbacks , HH ...

  27. Hello everyone, I followed Chase’s advice finally. I withdrawal safari and I took Vanquish 540. I have not gone for metal detecting yet but I will tell you my first impression. It is a very light, easy to assemble and generally very easy to use detector. In contrast with safari I thought it is a toy. In my mind the comparison was created between a car 30 years ago and todays car. Technology is evolving. I did of course some air tests with coins and jewelry and as it was expected I saw totally different vdi numbers. I was impressed by the vdi solid numbers something that safari did not have at that size but I’ve noticed not a good separation between copper and silver. Safari in brass and silver separation was much better. Safaris Silver target flute sound is unforgettable. On the other hand, I think that Vanquish has more solid vdi for gold jewelry and locates gold jewelry better and deeper than safari. After a research I made on web I decited to work on jewelry mode with reduced separation and iron bias on low. Some guys on internet said that the recovery speed in coins mode is like equinox at 5 but with little depth, in jewelry at 4 and in relic and all metal at 2, something which I do not know if it is correct. Ι hope I made the right decision with Vanquish 540 purchase. Anyway, soon I will go metal detecting and I will tell you my impression under real circumstances. Also, I am waiting for your advices.

  31. Allen, My grandfather had the same problem when he started with the 800, and as geof_junk stated grandfather was able to find someone that was able to help him. In your area there has to be many people with the same detector as you and they would be happy to help you in person. First thing to do is to go to the equinox forum on here and ask people about the problems that you are having, there may also be some answers to the questions that you may have already on there. I have found most of my answers there already as I have only been using grandfather's 800 for a short time. Be patient and read to learn the machine.

  32. Hey Guys, Thanks for all the comments. All found with the Minelab GPZ 7000 metal detector. I wouldn't say any were really faint, as we were placering down the wash to hardpack or bedrock. In some areas, the hardpack was still covering the bedrock, the old timers didn't get all the paypayer and the places where there is still caliche on the bedrock could mean nuggets! P.S. I don't own or operate a Backhoe. Rob

  33. I'm a bit stuck with the range of coils i can get for the Nox.. we've mainly been using the 6'' coil for detecting bedrock in rainforest country and the 15x12'' coil in open country out west.. we've also have a couple of 11'' coils which my son uses on the Nox 600 when i'm using the other coils.. thanks again for the kmz files, they've saved a lot of leg-work in getting to these mine sites.. according to one old matey up here, we're the first with detectors in some of these places.. they're certainly bloody hard work to get to, which makes it all the more worthwhile..

  34. I was advised years ago by a broker that with larger pieces (10 oz +) to not put them on the internet as many buyers will pay a premium for them. Why? I don't know. Maybe they tell their mates they found them. Sometimes it's also just not worth the flack you'll receive from some members of various forums. Another thing I've found is that as prospecting season approaches you'll have heaps of friends who want to catch up but after their holiday you wont hear from them again until their next holiday is approaching.

  36. Why did Garrett buy Whites? ..... Americans have realized that if they are to maintain their position in the global detector market ... they must simply "Globalize" ... and thereby keep the cost of manufacturing and the difficulty of developing and distributing detectors to markets at an acceptable level ... Whites owns a sufficient number of patents at PI and Multi VLF..= Garrett to save a lot of time and money on developing similar and proven technologies ... and thus gain time, for example, for possible innovation of these technologies. Whites and Garret have a strong tradition in the USA, still very many ACTIVE users ... / made in America / according to me, while Garret focuses more on basic/middle class hobby detectors but also on detection equipment for state organizations in terms of security and protection ,, a. .. Whites again produced a large number of detectors focused on a higher class of hobby detectors, as well as detectors designed for gold prospecting ... where I also have a good experience Many of these customers are large enough for Garrett / Whites to continue to successfully produce and sell their detectors. and Garrett undertook to maintain both Whites Detector Service Centers in the United States at the Whites Detectors Warranty Service. And that's a good step from Garrett. The next few days will show what Garrett / Whites' next corporate policy will be like ... the merger of these companies has given Americans hope ... that new Whites detectors can be a reality ... PS ..of course ... not only Americans will appreciate such a move ... but also many Whites users around the world ..

  37. I will never understand these company's not going with the same head phone connectors. Seems their mind set is to be different,... to control the head phones used with the machine they produce. Sad doing that for it limits the possible chance of bettering the performance of the machine. One thing about head phones and very deep targets... Targets on the edge of the detecting field are mixed in with so much other noise it's like trying to hear a needle in a haystack. A clean audio is fine but not even close to the where you want to be...to reach down and pull from the edge of the detecting field,... one must be able to pick out the little differences in this noisy area of the threshold to find treasure.. There are no details on these targets, One's that May only give a faint scent in one direction of the swing..

  38. Sigh. Not sure where you got the notion on Vanquish using 3 frequencies, that has never been published as a spec by ML. Regardless, # of frequencies used in MF has no bearing on performance (i.e., more does not equal better in this case and in fact the opposite can be true), that has been debunked by Minelab themselves in their published writings on Multi IQ and there is a some controversy surrounding the underlying marketing approach that ML took with FBS and touting 28 frequencies. Bottom line is that ML is somewhat opaque on their secret sauce and what is actually under the hoid with these multifrequency detectors so A to B comparisons based on objective specs are difficult if not impossible. What is key is how the signals are processed and Multi IQ used by Vanquish and Equinox is ML's latest generation multifrequency standard in terms of signal processing and destroys FBS on target separation due to its superior recovery speed. FBS may have a slight edge on super accurate IDs on deep silver (kind of a narrow capability to hang your hat on), but both detectors will detect targets just as deep. The Equinox 600 at $650 would run rings around the Safari in terms of versatility and has threshold control, so too would the 800 obviously, with even more features. But you only have $500 to spend, so I recommended the Vanquish. My recommendation would be to not reinvest the $500 into the aging Safari platform, but to consider saving up for a more modern and versatile Multi platform like Equinox.

  39. Last week my battery conked out. The Nox ran on the charger..... but not the battery. I called Keith Leppert my dealer out of Fort Bedford Metal Detectors, where by the way ML repair is, and asked him what i needed to do. He gave me a phone number and they gave me an RMA to send the machine in. When i took the machine apart ... i noticed stress cracks in the plastic mounts that holds the bolts in on the pod. She added that to my battery issue. They received it on Friday and i got a message from John who said they would get right on it, but because of the Virus there could be a delay but to please be patient and they would let me know. 3 more Emails on Monday from different people lol. Thanking me for choosing ML, my machine was repaired and heres the tracking number. Never said what they did....... so i contacted Kieth late in the evening. Next morning he said they replaced the pod. Thats a high five to ML in my book. They have just been awesome to me on this machine. Keith as a dealer ...... great to deal with, id highly recommend him any day. He will spend the time talking to you about hunting as well as a machine if you have the time ...... he takes the time. Plus..... the ML repair shop is right there. I happened to check those bolt mounts because two friends had they pods break completely off the shaft. Keith said the after market shafts maybe the issue. Apparently the OD on some maybe to small. So people are over tightening them. Also if its to small it wears the CF enough they get re-tightened. Keiths word of caution .... take care in tightening those bolts.

  42. Ended up going with the Vanquish. Figure I can always upgrade later, might as well start with the minimum so I can appreciate it when I spend the big $$ someday on a Nox, PI, etc. 🙂 Dealer seemed to think it would suit my purposes just fine, highly recommended it over the Simplex for our beaches since the Vanquish is multi-frequency. Will get to try it out this upcoming weekend 🤙

  46. By all means boost the battery pack, pays to keep the voltage on the Tdi Sl at or just under 16 volts. My brother has just got a 3D printer and I'm just amazed at how good they are. A friends SL developed a gentle 'hum' at 16 .8 volts with a freshly charged battery pack. But no issues under 16 volts. That was enough for me to curb my enthusiasm and set the limit at just under 16 volts. I achieved this by using a smart charger which allows me to control the voltage of each of the 4 cells. Given that White's is no more, I'm looking at preserving the machines I have for as long as possible. Not looking to push the envelope too far. It is a risk vs gain equation. I'm with Jim in Idaho on this one. All the best.

  47. Welcome aboard and post some of the finds you get, we all love gold! The people here can help with almost any question that you might have, and maybe you can answer someone else's questions. What type of equipment do you use, and what part of Alaska are you from.
