  1. I think your right Steve, I’ve honestly tried to look at my reaction to this situation and make allowances for my own very healthy ego and the need for a bit of self hype 😝 . Thing is you and I both know that we have nothing to worry about, it really doesn’t matter how ML promote the 6000, yeah it would have been nice to be front and centre but at the end of the day the 6000 will do a VERY good job of speaking for itself whether we are there front and centre or not. So change of plans, I’m just going to chill out and enjoy the peace and quiet and go do a bit of detecting, Winter is coming. 😊

  2. The reality is.....it's a new Minelab Gold Detector and quite a few of us will purchase it, as we know what their past detectors can do. DetectExperts, Old worn out dudes, hot young hotties, or some of guys who's been in the business for 20+ yrs....Minelab has become such a powerful detector brand name, it really doesn't matter how it comes out. We'll line up and buy, like we have been doing for years. Yes there will be a good amount who sit back and wait to hear the results and field reports, but those same folks are the ones who normally do that anyway. So time will tell and they'll eventually purchase...only to find out some new model is about to be leaked...and then total chaos will rule again and a lot of wasted posts, words and finger pointing....just like now. Why do we even read and bite? I guess we enjoy self inflicted pain. Again, The reality is. It will get here and it will kick ass and most will like it. It's a Minelab

  3. You forgot to sign up as a Detexpert JP! Only genuine Minelab Detexperts know anything about Minelab detectors and how they operate. I've reviewed the Detexpert page, and neither of us is listed there, so we are Detecdummies! Being as you are a Detecdummy, my advice is just stay quiet and wait for more information from the Detexperts. If you learn enough, perhaps you can be accepted into the exalted ranks. I know I'm not smart enough to make the cut, but there may be hope for you! Don't know. Minelabs already said the GPZ remains the flagship, so I will leave any battles over which is better, GPX or GPZ, to those who want to argue over what Minelab has already acknowledged. My party line for ages has been to not buy any new detector until it has been in the publics hands for at least six months. For anyone with the slightest doubts, that is still my recommendation. Just wait. The good news for me is it is now above freezing overnight, ground thawing fast if not already, detecting just around the corner for me!

  4. OMG WTF is going on in the world? Is this instant gratification, social media ‘add water and stir’ the dominant driving force now rather than someone actually having runs on the board? I say this with no wish of offending the social media effort makers reading this forum who are striving to hit that magical viral effect this type of interaction craves, but blow me down with a feather how can someone who has generated more views than actual hours in the field be a mover and shaker when it comes to imparting actual informed information on a subject as complex as a metal detector? Achieving 100 000 views does not automatically insert someone into “detextspurt” category it just means they managaed to create something that was entertaining to a whole heap of clueless people!! I get the entertainment concept behind this type of interaction but just having an opinion for its own sake is not going to help people seeking real information!! Maybe I’m NOW just an old dinosaur who’s resistant to change and feels threatened by a brave new world? But seriously whenever any of these viral vids touch on a subject I’m well versed in I find myself cringing 😬 in embarrassment. Talk about “Fake news!!!” I think Steve has made a good call on this, it’s better to just let this thing play out take a back seat and get on with my year. It’s a Minelab and fundamentally its DNA pedigree is flowing freely regardless of how many “Detextspurts” they engage!! Who knows maybe that’s the thinking behind the whole concept, such blind confidence in their product that they can be as fluid as they like on all other levels? God I feel old right now!! 😔 JP

  5. 4-1-21, EL PASO, TX. - FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE- Consolidating the former "Big Three" of metal detecting (Fisher, Garrett, and remnants of White's Electronics) into one cohesive engineering force, the United States manufacturers are aiming to put themselves back on the map with a brand new detecting technology. With Minelab leading technological developments in metal detecting for the past two decades, U.S. companies have struggled to meet the performance benchmarks set by the Australian company. In recent years we have even seen companies that in the past, took the crown of metal detecting, be pushed aside as they were run into the ground by poor leadership or unmanaged engineers who struggled to complete projects. Sources say that this strategic alliance was formed sometime in 2015, when the GPZ 7000 was released and it became clear that Minelab threatened to dominate the world detecting market. Luckily these companies had such great foresight to meet that challenge. "We're really excited to share this technology with the world," said engineering manager Gerhard Fischar. "This new platform has the potential to revolutionize metal detecting for customers across the planet." The new patents show that this unique process involves feeding two oscillators through a low pass filter. This signal is then transmitted into the ground through a coil, which is able to pick up shifts in one oscillator, creating an audible tone for the treasure hunter. Recent FCC filings have revealed some detailed photos, drawings, and specs which follow below. Main circuit board photo, showing sophisticated layout of major components and groundbreaking design: Mechanical design, featuring organically-sourced components and easy-to-operate controls: Detail photo of metal detector coil (NOTE: this is a production model, not a prototype): To release this new detecting technology to the world, the Garrett arm of the company plans to use its marketing muscle and get the machine into the hands of respected YouTube personalities across the world. Steve Moore, director of marketing, said "We've already taken this turn-on-and-go detector out to some civil war sites, and I tell you what, this machine can hunt. Now I won't say who it was, but one of our more popular testers found a shot shell on their first hunt, and seeing that video footage in 4k with all of SUBSCRIBE NOW notifications will make you a believer. And I am pretty sure it wasn't even planted this time." Our office reached out to Minelab about this new competition, a receptionist advised that the engineering and marketing teams were out "crushing tinnies" and unavailable for comment at the moment. An unnamed source provided information on specs of this new detector, which follow below. Name: "RELICMASTER BF-Pro PLUS MAX F97" Price: $849.99 MSRP, $459.83 MAP, $34.21 eBay Weight: 6.7 lbs Technology: Differential Dual-Osc-Sense™ Frequency: 80kHz Batteries: D Cell (12) Runtime: 23 minutes Coil Type: Concentric, 3/4" Plywood Waterproof: IP23 rated, can withstand tears from crying and lint from extended closet stays Release Date: April 2026 Manufacturing Location: Juarez, MX We'll be following up on this exciting development as it looks like the USA is back on the map when it comes to metal detecting.

  6. Went out to 2 different beaches for a mix of GPX and AQ hunting. Tony repaired my headphones for the AQ and also made me a spare set , along with 2 short cables, so I could zip tie the short cable to the machine, and so I would not break the M8 connector. The short cable also converts the M8 to an M12, a more robust connector going to the headphones. So, for the first AQ hunt in a while, I chose my “spot” to see if I could find any low conductors where the GPX had previously run the 18” DD coil. I did not find any coins in that area, but did find little bits of melted copper and lead. So, I ventured out a bit and found the silver Washington quarter,Mercury dime and all the rest of the other coins. I Later met up with a forum member - Jim in ma, at one of his spots. Thanks for the invite up there. 👍 I used the GPX to see if I could replicate the depth and coin count that I have had previously at my silver beach. This beach was smaller in the dry sand area, but the EMI was considerably less. The sand structure was different too, as I did not hit a clay layer or any of the other layers I was used to. But the principle was the same, and I did score a decent number of coins including the Mercury, silver war nickel & .925 ring. All in all, it was a fun time out.

  7. Fisher and I reached an agreement - they decided to proceed with production of AQ Limited units but felt that it would be best if they dealt directly with the buyers. Since this was a change from what had previously been agreed between us, it was necessary to reach a new agreement. This was done and my list of waiting buyers is now with them and I have received an acceptable compensation for my work in marketing the Limited. I will continue to be a FTP dealer and am very hopeful that my experience with this project over the last nearly 4 years will induce potential buyers to chose me as their dealer.

  8. I hope this is appropriate to share, but I thought it is something you don’t see everyday. I found it at my local park, a few inches down. I cleaned it up very nice, and I’m sure it is still strong enough to use. It says made in England. I was wondering if any had an idea on an age. Any guesses welcome!

  9. This makes me wonder if Minelab look at that as an opportunity lost by not re-working the 10x5 closed coil on the Gold Monster to be an option for the Equinox way back when it was released. 1000’s of sales in a month on something that (probably) would have taken a few weeks to test, re-model and re-badge. Too late now. A 6000 is in my future.

  10. With all the experienced gold detectorists out there, all the gold detecting channels 50k-100k subs, all the dealers who could be showing the unit off while knowing what they are talking about - they choose to give this opportunity to a no name relic hunting channel in Florida where 6000 will see zero usage? And let a guy who doesn't appear to have ever detected for gold nuggets a single day of his life, who will probably never use a 6000 and has likely never touched a 7000, and is looking at it like it's some kind of perplexing mystery stick give his opinion on wether it's an improvement over old tech or not? I mean, you could have gotten virtually the same thing by grabbing any random Joe off the street, his opinion means zero to me. Just...what? No words for the amateur hour this entire release has been. I'm honestly embarassed for them watching this kind of stuff.

  11. Ornithologists and biologist all believe that they have been extinct for nearly a century but us old time Plumas County prospectors know that they are alive and well and thriving. I am referring, of course, to the Plumas Kwail. This is a very unique bird and is quite important to the local prospectors. It is unique in that it hibernates in the winter and emerges each year about the first of April. it is important to the knowledgeable Plumas County prospector because it is known to pick up and swallow the densely scattered small sunbaker gold nuggets that are so abundant here in Plumas county. All you have to do is sneak up on one of the birds and jump up and scare it, then detect it's droppings. If you by chance find a covey of Plumas Kwail a multi ounce day is common. I will post a photo forthwith.

  13. This was our first test with her out in the Mojave Desert, and all I can say it is very easy to walk about detecting with this one. Firstly, there was no stooping over with a scoop to pick up bad targets with this detector, they were all the real thing! And GeoSense works amazingly well, love being able to go with her automatically and easily keeping up with wherever I detected, it was a breeze. I've detected with others that were unwieldly and hard to control in the desert, but I can say this one is really something special. We walked for a couple miles on the edge of a dry lake looking for meteorites and she really showed her stuff. She almost seemed to know her way over the salty ground, and picked up anything I threw at her. She easily found nuggets of every size left behind by many others, and was very quiet and hardly made any noise anywhere I went, even in the most briny parts of the ground covered with white salt, underneath the buzzing high tension power lines that cross parts of the dry lake, and even going over hot rocks did not seem to bother her much. She's quite a detector and we are finally really lucky to have one like this! All I can say is wow, everyone should have one like this for detecting! June is a great detector dog, we rescued her from the pound, and one day I hope to find a GPX 6000 too. Happy April 1st!

  15. Several patches close to town here that I got over 1000 nuggets off. Got 1200 off one patch when the sdc first came out. Paid its self off in two weeks on a patch the 5000 couldn’t get anymore. Trick is to get to em all first ! 🤔 I haven’t detected in 2 months to make sure I’m fresh for a month long assault!

  16. Minelab also markets the Etrac and CTX above the Equinox - sold my Etrac after 2 years of using the Equinox. I was getting much better results with the Equinox. Most of our club members who had the CTX are now using the Equinox. Not saying the 6000 will be better than the Z but that Minelab is not immune from using marketing spin when it suits them - the truth is out there just waiting to be unmuzzled.

  17. The biggest problem here? ANYONE can sign up as a detexpert. Leaves people hang out to dry that genuinely know how the machine works and had a hand in designing the things. As a customer of ML (or any other manufacturer for that matter, be it metal detectors or whatever), I don’t want to listen to just anyone talk from a script about the machine. I want to know the inner workings and exactly what each function does from people that know the machine. Little bit peeved about the way they’ve done this. If it was any other manufacturer they would’ve been crucified by their ‘loyalists’

  19. I’m cross checking within myself making sure I’m dividing the usual pre-release jitters of a product that I’ve been involved in for quite some time now and what is actually going on here, this release is very different to any release I have ever been involved in to the point of almost total exclusion. I understand about hold ups and marketing process, there are a million little things that need to be sorted along that stressful path to ramping up production and having adequate stock on hand, in parallel to that process the marketing guys have to get the word out and let everyone know what it is they have on offer, I get all of that. I also get that I’m not be needed this time round, that the product release is being managed differently and fair enough. But after watching some of the recent super crappy YouTube clips and having numerous people I know talking about how they held the detector at shows etc and others seeing it being used in various locations around the country I find myself asking WTF?

  22. The more I use this machine the more I love it!! The anchor button is a 1795-1810 military button, found in the iron. We have dug this field plenty of times! Small brass buttons today were under the iron or next to it! Bullet was at about 10 inches in the iron. Site was in South Chesapeake VA

  25. No clue why they went with the regular ears on the 8 inch............... Both are fine with me, both work as they should with no problems here. The fact you get a lower rod with the 8 is a Big plus...disconnect the coil fitting from the main housing....flip the lever...pull out the rod .... set aside, line up the new coil and rod....slide in, close latch......connect coil fitting to the housing....DONE>>> how easy is that... 😍 The big coils ears stay the same on the New Production model, as far as I know.

  26. I’ve only got to use my 10 x 5 once so far. It definitely punches deeper compared to the 6 inch at least for me. A .2g nugget came up as a solid 8. Gold mode 1, I had recovery at 4 and FE2 at 0. Coil cover sucks though, kept coming off until i got it dirty.

  27. PART SEVEN: This is the final step of the cleaning process on these gold specimens. After soaking the gold specimens in Muriatic acid a few days I then place them in a solution of baking soda and water. There is an aggressive reaction for a short period of time to the gold specimens causing more of the host rock to be removed. Then I rinse each gold specimen in water. I then have four containers in which two have Muriatic acid, one with baking soda and one with water. I then take each gold specimen and place it in the first container of Muriatic acid, then in the second container of Muriatic acid, then in the solution of baking soda and the rinse each specimen again in water. I repeat this process several times. The reason I place each gold specimen two times in the Muriatic acid is because the Muriatic acid becomes weakened when I rinse the gold specimens in water. I then soak the gold specimens in a solution of baking soda for a couple days and the rinse them in water. The final step is to apply steam to each gold specimen for additional cleaning. During the entire cleaning process there is some loss of gold from some of the gold specimens and it is a judgement call on how far one should continue the cleaning process. That judgement call can be great or it can be disastrous. Pictured below is the loss of gold from the cleaning process: I will post pictures in another thread of the gold specimens before and after the were cleaned.

  30. Just my opinion...It has all the characteristic of a small coil. Depth is above normal for it's size but still shy of the big coil. If your hunting difficult water it's a much better choice. And I only use the AQ because it is Deep...So the bigger coil is my favorite. If I remember correct, on a buried yard stick nickel I could get it at 15 .. faint at 16.. all metal, which is very good for it's size And it does come with it's own rod so changing coils is very easy.

  34. I normally don't dig for bottles but when my Brother-In-Law told me about all the glass they were seeing at this site, I decided to go take a look. The site dates from and the bottle we were digging are from 1850's to about 1900. Nothing real valuable came out but there were some real heartbreakers (broken bottles) like log cabin bitters, California bitters and a few others. We also recovered marbles, coins and tokens, but nothing real exciting to mention specifically. We used a trenching method to recover the bottles. There was about 8-10 inches of topsoil then a layer of trash that extended down to about 3 feet deep. We would dig about a 3 foot by 3 foot hole straight down and then start trenching and backfilling as we went. Between the 4 people that were there I would guess we recovered about 150 bottles. I will say I'm feeling it this morning after digging about 9 hours over the weekend. Hope to get back there again next weekend and I'll post my finds of that trip next week. Pictured below are the bottles I recovered.

  37. Thanks Joe. Yep you won't be getting a Christmas card from Jim this year 😄 He was fine. I showed him the basics (since that's all I know🤔), but since he has a lot of water experience and PI experience, he made whatever adjustments he needed. He was nice enough to give the AQ a full dunk for about 3 or 4 hours, so it finally hit some water instead of the land hunting it was used to. I wanted to try my GPX at a different setting and his beach was a great choice. But I bet that water was COLDDDDDDDDD 🥶

  40. I have to say .... i was floored to see the MDT only required one battery and to replace it only costs $6...... AND you get to as well as the charger which will recharge both at the same time. You can get them easily anywhere on line. Why are we paying crazy prices for battery packs??? You just cant beat old fashion KISS. Ive used mine a lot.... they still charge to 4.1 and ive had mine a couple of years now. This is one well made tank of a machine.... yet light weight. Im hoping SteveG comes up with that thinner lower shaft for a little better water movement. Thou i have to say the 12" coil moves pretty darn well out there.

  43. I am sure that for the initiated (like us) the 6000 will be a blessing. But beginners who get the 6000 as their first machine might get hooked on the automation. But perhaps this will be the new ML vision going forward: Don't worry about settings too much and let the machine do most (all) for you. Who knows, the new 7000 successor could equally have much more automation, and machines like the current 7000 and the 5000, with all their settings, would then disappear over time. IMHO this would be a pity. The current 7000 has just the right balance between automation and settings, the 5000 was overkill. But a new 7000 with just auto 1 and auto 2 and not much more, I just can't imagine that!

  46. Nope, I just want to test it where there is really no (specific) claims being made, and definitely no data. In salt and bad ground. I really don't care if it outperforms the Z on dinks. But if it's outperforming the Z on appreciably sized stuff in difficult ground types where the Z struggles with any size coil - well then it's a real useful tool IMO!

  49. So now my staff/I am supposed to train customers: on their detector. on the tools we use. on the rocks we look for. on the elevations we like to stay at. on the kinds of gold our detector hits best at. on the sounds to ignore/investigate. on the way to properly recover the target. on the way to tell lead/hot rocks/cold stones from gold. on the way to staying in the zone/proper mindset. but now we have to teach them plants??? Wait a minute. I could of sworn the GPX-6000 had a video showing "How to become an Expert, just turn it on". They don't need dealers anymore. Cabela's, Amazon, Sportsman's, Target, Dick's and Walmart can do that. I might as well start looking for a new job....
