  1. Today found me deep in the Nevada outback, searching for those elusive gold nuggets with my trusty Minelab GPZ 7000. Towards the end of the day, I heard a nice, narrow double target response from the detector, just like the small and shallow sub-gram nuggets make. After pinpointing the target with the edge of the GPZ 14 coil, I plunged my plastic scoop into the loose soil, where it encountered a rock about 3 or 4 inches deep. Removing it from the soil, I immediately noticed that the rock was unusually dense; rubbing the dirt from the stone revealed the familiar rusty tin can color and smooth, regmaglypted surface typical of a weathered chondrite. The stone meteorite had a couple of broken surfaces, so I carefully searched the area with the detector for more fragments and soon received another double target response that turned out to be another stone of about the same size and depth as the first, and around 8 feet downslope. The two fragments fit together perfectly, just like a jigsaw puzzle. This meteorite is my third Nevada cold find since 2008. Area where the two chondrite fragments were dug, one at just 3 o'clock of the detector coil, and the other at the tip of the scoop handle: The two fragments reunited, with a total mass of 276 grams:

  2. I like carrying my small Apex pick but it’s always left me wanting a bit more when digging the blade is a narrow scraping down on a target but I’ve put up with it because it’s lightweight and digs OK. A couple months ago the bracket welded onto the rear bumper holding my spare tire and aux fuel tank cracked and was starting to flop around held mostly in place by the large bolt the swing out arm pivots on. The bumper actually works well with the exception it’s breaking and a new setup would run me $1500 to $2000 so I decided to teach myself to weld on YouTube and bought myself a little mig/tig welder, fixing the bumper has gone well so far and I’ve branched out to other projects modifying my picks and a few other things. On my small apex pick I add two small wings with 1/4 weldable steel one to each side widening the pick from 3” to 5” and creating a scoop out of the blade, I also slimmed down the pointed side to compensate for the added weight of the blade and shaped the point better for getting down into and between the desert rocks. If this works well I’ll modify the Apex Tallon next.

  3. Yes, I'm based in Africa but it's a big place so there's no one answer as to why no posts? Yes, there's Internet but it varies from 5G to 0G depending which country and where in the country you are. There is activity, Google "metal detecting/South Africa" and you'll get hits . Google "metal detecting/Equatorial Guinea" and you won't. My guess is that there's a booming gold detecting scene in lode gold places like Ghana, Mali and southern Ethiopia around Lega Dembi but it's all under the radar. But these are places you might not want to go or at least send your mother-in-law first to check it out. Interesting that someone says Africa is MineLabs biggest market. Any better resolution on whereabouts I've known a few folks that swing a GPX 5000 in SE DRC and Zimbabwe but it's all under the radar. Trouble is that if the locals see you next thing you know there's a land invasion. 99% of the population don't have a thousand bucks or so and if they did higher priorities than a detector. In some places it's illegal to hold unwrought gold which dissuades that market. Another issue that we have and you don't have is ordnance. There's a place in Mozambique where I'd give my left testicle to prospect. Millimetre gold stringers in quartz. But it's also richly endowed with anti-personnel mines. OK so you've a metal detector and you'll find them (except the one you don't). So you'll think long and hard before you dig everything won't you? We probably have more and better beaches than the US and I've seen folks with detectors what's missing are hordes of gold laden babes replenishing the resource like they do for you guys! Happy Hunting

  4. Yesterday I and some friends were detecting a very old park. There were 3 flour Mills there dating back to 1850. I found a bell dating to Sept 8, 1863. Likely a bell to one of the flour Mills. The bell is almost 5 inches in diameter. I also found two dimes, 1907 and 1876. The 1876 has a CC mint mark ALA Carson City. Finally a few weeks ago in a different park I found a 1909 half dollar. All of this with my new Equinox 800.

  5. Great responses from everyone and I appreciate the love as I really do try and care about my customers Success and them knowing their detectors better than what any other dealer will provide. I love it when I see other dealers offering education, as that is what separates us few from the majority. So when I see them offer some training, I just make sure my staff and I offer more and also the knowledge of seeing different kinds of gold in its natural state the way it was found and how those varying pieces respond to the multiple gold detectors on the market is very informative and unknown to most, including many dealers. As stated by some of my customers that have taken my class before, the density of the gold in a specimen is critical to how it responds to the different detector technologies. Here is something to think about. A Larger or dense nugget on the Minelab PI's/ZED in the preferred timings we use in most places of the US, the gold makes the low-high-low sound and pattern. But smaller nuggets and the few specimens with dense enough gold in it that the PI's/7000 see, they make the traditional high low sound. Now I realize there is always an exception, but 4 of my staff and I have been running Minelab PI's since the SD-2100 days for 20+ yrs. Our ears have learned the pattern of sounds as well as the width of target response vs ground noise and we've all dug 1000's of nuggets to compare to the sounds of the gold we find. Brian mentioned it. How many people have taken a vial of flower gold 1/4 oz, 1/2 oz, 1 oz and listened to their PI detectors? Most will crap their pants with the results. Let's hope the extra sensitivity of the 6000 can help in recover more of those ghost nuggets so I can quite taking 2 detectors on my trips.

  6. GARRETT METAL DETECTOR ANNOUNCES FIRST DETECTOR LAUNCH FROM THE WHITE’S ACQUISITION - Kevin Hoagland Van, Texas April 17, 2021 – Mr. Vaughan Garrett Senior Vice President, Marketing and Sales announced to the attendees of the Charles Garrett Memorial Hunt IV, the first co-branded Garrett – White’s detector will be the GoldMaster 24K aka. GMT 24K due for release mid-year 2021. Members of the Garrett team that I spoke with including Mr. Garrett shared with me that there are Garrett technologies they wish to incorporate into the GMT 24K before release but did not elaborate on what those upgrades may be. I'm very excited about this launch, which is just a month or so away, currently I own a GM 24K, I purchased just before COVID and wonder if we will qualify for an upgrade,if any are made. Maybe a grace period within 1 year of purchase would be fair to qualify. What are your thoughts you 24K owners? Co-branded. So Garrett GMT 24K? White’s GMT 24K by Garrett? Garrett/White’s 24K? I’d probably ditch the White’s moniker entirely, but they paid money for the name and want to leverage it. I’m not sure that works unless it was kept as a separate division. People are going to know it’s a Garrett, and that’s what it will probably get called anyway. Avoid the Nokta/Makro effect and keep it simple. Product name should roll off the tongue, not be a mouthful. So it’ll be Garrett 24K for me. Garrett additions? What does that mean? Maybe a tweak to the threshold as I felt a disconnect there. Better be the same housing, but I’m guessing not desert tan? Whatever, names and colors do not matter, just performance. Great move by Garrett! Goldmaster 24K Review

  8. Quote.......Problem is I can't find any place where legally you are allowed to go prospect. I checked Papua New Guinea, which I think has an amazing potential for nuggety gold based on the geology I've read. It's incredibly dangerous too. But sadly foreigners aren't really allowed to prospect and every square inch is privately owned. I took a job in PNG way back in 1973 for 6½ years at the final construction stage and initial copper/gold mine (the largest in the world. I packed my gold pan to do some prospecting as there was a remote gold mine at the mine site. At that stage PNG was under Australian care and control and finally self government. Law and order as we knew it was far removed, and the advice I took was to donate gold pan to the locals. I have been considering writing an article about a hike to the 1930s gold mine when I get time. The job set me up for life by the way.

  9. Nice wings! When my pick point wore out I cold cut a Cat D4 grouser plate to shape, cut the old blunt tip off and stick welded the replacement on using low hydrogen rods. Note the chevron shaped cut for maximum strength. That was some years ago and the point still remains sharp many hundreds of holes later :)

  10. There are various videos on Youtube, Facebook, etc. They usually aren't like Western videos though, they don't seem to really show much detecting. I doubt many villagers have time or resources to be posting to forums or creating videos. The Western US was incredibly dangerous back in the 1800's when the prospectors came out. I find the potential adventure in another country to be a somewhat tempting prospect myself. I have little family, nothing to lose really, why not. Problem is I can't find any place where legally you are allowed to go prospect. I checked Papua New Guinea, which I think has an amazing potential for nuggety gold based on the geology I've read. It's incredibly dangerous too. But sadly foreigners aren't really allowed to prospect and every square inch is privately owned. I also made some friends in China with my various jade ventures, and they tell me there is 0% chance I can ever go there and prospect or keep the gold (or jade). Which is ironic since we allow any Chinese or other foreign company to simply form a corporation here in any state and we treat it like a person with equal rights as a natural born citizen when it comes to mining laws. I'm curious if anyone knows any countries that an American can go and prospect that are still "on the frontier" like in Africa, keep the gold, maybe even stake a claim or start a mine? Or do we only give our minerals away to any country that wants them while getting no reciprocity in return from anyone?

  11. Crikey, what have you started Lunk. Aventree and Minelab will get together and we`ll have a heads up unit on a band in line with Jasongs recent post. Sound and sight detecting maybe with a little scent producing an occasional coffee sniff for a quick caffeine hit.

  13. Airtimesa -- For what it's worth, I've built one-piece carbon-fiber dive shafts for folks before, so if your idea proves to be a bit too long, I can hook you up with a one-piece carbon-fiber one, built to whatever length you prefer... (or, it could be a two-piece with a short upper and very short lower, just enough to allow a small amount -- a few inches or whatever -- of adjustability in terms of length...) I can do whatever you like -- as I'm always happy to do custom builds... Thanks! Steve

  14. Yeah, it was loud and high toned. I figured it was just another soda/beer can. But I was very deep in the woods following a very old and obscure path and I was surrounded by thorn bushes and under growth. So then I thought who in their right mind would be drinking here, after all, I had gone where no one had gone before, at least no one for a very very long time. I dug it and there it was.

  15. I have a Ghanaian work colleague and we talked about African gold prospecting.......he mentioned that in many parts it wouldn’t be safe (for Westerners) to nugget hunt there by yourself or even in groups........you’re basically taking their gold and the locals wouldn’t like it one bit and trying to “smuggle” gold out of the country is another matter entirely. Corruption and danger lurks everywhere and for many, gold prospecting is a means of survival.

  16. Hi, I'm a old (age over 50) detectorist from Italy. I used a lot of m.d. in 26 years (various model of Minelab, Whites, Tesoro, XP, Fisher, Garrett and the latest Rutus), but i love so much the Whites Spectrum XLT. This is for me the best detector of all time. I hope to know news and interesting contents about the magic m.d. world! Greetings from Italy

  17. Wow this news from Garrett Metal Detectors was definitely a surprise.! I didn't see this one coming. GPAA News by Kevin Hoagland mentioned this intro news this month.GARRETT METAL DETECTOR ANNOUNCES FIRST DETECTOR LAUNCH FROM THE WHITE’S ACQUISITIONKevin HoaglandVan, Texas April 17, 2021 – Mr. Vaughan Garrett Senior Vice President, Marketing and Sales announced to the attendees of the Charles Garrett Memorial Hunt IV, the first co-branded Garrett – White’s detector will be the GoldMaster 24K aka. 19. As a non-gold prospector observer, would be interesting to see what else they come out with and how they warranty it. Garrett service is pretty good. I imagine that housing and form factor they used as latest on MX Sport/MX7, the gold models waterproof, not waterproof (GMT/GMX Sport?) they purchased the molds and design. Maybe some of the labels for display unit and coils? Maybe just a simple printing change. Color change probably simple as well. I don’t see the Treasuremaster/Treasure Pro making a comeback as they seemed to be overpriced for that beginner spot where the Ace line up rests. Or the MX7/MX Sport for that matter as they seem to overlap with AT lineup. Unless this is a marketshare play to retain the Whites loyal. Then I could see that. But are they competing with First Texas for number of brands and rebranded detectors or going to make more compelling offerings like the Apex? I always wanted to see a VX3/DFX device in the waterproof MX Sport housing with wireless and waterproof headphone options. But maybe that would cannibalize on AT Apex type future device they have hinted about.... A TRX by Garrett as an alternative to the AT Pro Pointer? Pro Pointer already has a version with Zlink. Would they drop any of their current offerings like the AT Gold and GT2500? So many questions. Time will tell I guess.

  20. I use a small pick most of the time. I do not have access to welding equipment but when my pick got too short I went to a car muffler shop and got the guy to tig weld a a small handy man jackhammer changeable tip to my pick. It was a great mod. I noted that a super magnet is attached to the pick. I moldered some epoxy putty around the magnet so no edges are on the back of the pick which allows me to remove all steel and hot rocks with one swipe of the hand.

  21. I suspect ML know that not in just ergonomics that the 6000 is the new current King, thus they have something up their sleeves, a software update to get the current Z up to speed is the go, or a new lightweight, more ergonomic Z as second choice, Steve and other testers might have a prototype already (I`m an OZ, tis in my DNA to av some wacked fun 🤪 pleeeze put down the axe Steve). Cunning buggers have no competition so to stop it all being boring (and keep shareholders happy) they make their own products compete with each other.

  22. I think people over there are just from a different mindset. If they are successful finding gold they will hide and not tell due to fear. Sadly, this region of the world is highly unsafe and the last thing people probably care about is chatting on social media about their 6k detectors which is more than the average annual salary for many. It is striking though, the largest market for ML is essentially silent like a black hole. I always wanted to visit Africa. Unfortunately, for me it will be Discovery channel only. The risk for me and my family would just be too high.

  24. Today the better half and I hit the camp. She used the Equinox with 6” coil because the 11” is too heavy for her. I had the DEUS with 11” coil. The DEUS takes some concentration but it does pull some stuff out. Tiny to large it sees it. I don’t mind the false at times on flat iron. Anyways here are some pics of my finds today. The little button is a sailing ship. The pistol probably has a tale or two. The buckle was in a bed of iron and gave a sharp blip on the DEUS.

  25. This morning was as windy as yesterday, 30 mph with gusts to 45. It was supposed to settle down and stay kinda cool, so I decided to jump in the waders and hit the river. Never saw so much beach before! The tide was way out. I knew low tide was after 12 further down the river so going a couple hours earlier would do. Even the old V8 engine block was out of the water today. In 5 hours I did pretty good. Got some trash but nothing too trifling, a couple of pull tabs and a beer can or two, some fishing tackle, shotgun shells and some odd bits of lead. Bronze bead or roller of some sort, it is not hollow. Nice fancy rivet with a sun pattern, even the shank is patterned. Thin brass device holder of some sort, looks like it had an insert, either stone or cloisonne. Not sure what the copper circular object is but it is thick, heavy and appears to have snapped off something. 1918 Buffalo nickel, undated Buffalo, wheat and IHP with no dates. I had to break them out of their encrustation. The Buffalos were 9/10, the pennies both 14. And the find of the day, I was surprised: Solid brass Brown Bess musket buttplate with engraving. At first I thought it was for an Enfield but it's too big. Dates from mid 1700s to mid 1800s. Either this place was hit hard for silver or I need a PI detector. 😀 Nickels and pennies are everywhere, there's gotta be some silver coins here.

  28. I was thinking Z-Lynk wireless also. If the release is really only a month away I wonder how much tweaking they've done. OTOH they have owned the rights for about a year now and they possibly got to work right away. I like the word 'first', although that might be Kevin's choice of words more than Garrett's. The 24k was the most obvious re-issue since Garrett doesn't have a detector running at higher than 20 kHz (right?). And the 24k was White's best creation in quite a while. Now I'll remind them of my hope -- reissue the Bullseye TRX. I see NickeldNdimed already beat me to that wish. Just pure reissue (standalone, not part of Z-Lynk) would be a positive and likely profitable step, IMO.

  29. I really liked a lot about the original GMT 24K. What I hope Garrett changes are the battery system, give it actual target IDs, more threshold adjustments, wireless connection with the Garrett MS-3s and put it on a Garrett shaft system.

  31. Not only would that not happen on these forums, but I see no reason why it should under any circumstances. Why would Garrett reissuing the 24K not be great news for all involved? Facts are facts, and this is not Whites news, as Whites is gone. This is Garrett news, so I’ll post it there! Genuinely great news in my opinion, and amazed I missed it. Thanks for posting!

  36. I like watching the show How It’s Made and when I turned the TV on today it was about making detectors. They were at Garrett factory and started out showing how their coils were made plus how each was tested. Then they went through the whole assembly to complete a working metal detector. I’ve seen something like this before but I believe it was somewhat different than the previous one. It was just good to see something American made. Chuck

  37. My day started by taking my wife to breakfast and a trip to a local greenhouse. On our way back we drove by a place I have wanted to hunt for a while and couldn't because the owners were just not to friendly. But low and behold I noticed some new house development signs. I did a quick title search and found out it was sold and being developed very soon. So I grabbed my stuff and headed back to this 1830's house. Today was the first day since I got the 800 I could spend more than an hour and a half detecting. My first two hours were a pretty much a bust except a cool silver plate spoon and my wife texting me to see if I found anymore jewelry? (NO) I was getting a little frustrated and decided to focus on a small strip of grass (three feet wide) next to the driveway and an overgrown pasture. After five feet I got an OK 28-29 signal that was kind of bouncy. First good coin popped out a 1905 barber quarter (yes) Things were looking up. I jumped across the driveway and hunted near a rather young pine tree. Two swings and boom a 24-26 and out comes a 1919 mercury. Things are getting interesting. I stood up after digging the merc, swung again got 23-24 at 9 inches out comes a coin that had me wondering what the hell is that. after a little quick cleaning I realized I had a 1832 classic head 1/2 cent. But this was no ordinary 1832 this has an over stamp with a cross and the initials FZ. It seems that it was stamped early in its life. I'm wanting to know if anyone has ever found a coin with stampings? I have found a lot of good coins, but this has now become my favorite. The day came to an end and I had to go and enjoy some burgers on the grill. Almost forgot the spoon, Its an american airlines made in the 1930's with the shape of a dc-3 and the words flagship on it.

  38. At this early stage of the 6000s release I am going to be bold and throw caution to the wind, the 6000 will do what no PI or ZVT will do and maybe replace your VLFs except where discrimination is needed. Time will tell and I look forward to your findings.

  39. Aye Mn the 15x10 X coil as all the X coils I`ve used lifted the Z another level, but time and new tech has brought us the 6000 which lifts it another level again, watch out when ML introduces Z2 with that 6000 tech and lightness, just wish they`d allow for aftermarket coils as they once did.

  40. It’s like an ore nugget. If you were probably to dissolve that away it would end up being a big pile of dust and flake, or wire gold, so there is lots of pore space in it. Try running your detector over a veil of gold dust and flake. It doesn’t work too well. VLFs work much better for fine gold and should sing nicely on pieces like that!

  41. Cobill- Glad you and many others enjoyed that reading lesson I posted over the winter. It's not that I don't enjoy selling bigger higher end detectors (in fact I do), but it's the VLF's that will keep on giving on a variety of gold the other PI's and ZED just can't see. I don't make this stuff up, it's facts that I can easily back up and I do it every year. Here is another one I recently posted to FB (Gerry McMullen) that the Gold Monster 1000 recovered in the same gridded site the 7000 already clean out. In fact the guy wish the 7 was there and showed me where to go with the Monster, He was so stunned the 7 missed it, he took the nugget and played with his 7 for 30 minutes trying to get the detector to respond. Nothing, not a peep. So what do you think he did next? Be pissed off the 7 did not see it and a handful other others? Or think positive and realize there is a need for a VLF, which he purchased that same day before I left. Now he too is a beleiver and have showed me many ounces of Au he's recovered with his Monster and now Equinox-800, that his 7000 can not see. At least he realized the importance to own both and that a real gold hunter does not like to leave gold. This is a nice collectors specimen and the one his ZED does not see/hear at all, even in air. It The Gold Monster 1000 earned it's bacon on that day. Below is the 32 gram = 1.03 ozt piece so many bigger detectors can not see.

  42. Went to a local park today after work. Only had a couple of hours to detect and test out my new home made arm cuff. I wasn't a big fan of the plastic, and it was a little too wide and flexy for me. At this point I only have about 5 hours on the 800. The first hour today netted me a handful of clad and some misc. corroded zinc. The next hour was the same thing clad and junk. With only 15 minutes to chicken parm, I got a really nice 28-29, not expecting anything great, I proceeded to find out what it was. For a split second I thought it was another odd piece of stainless, But I quickly saw Tiffany and co. Wooooo Hoooooo. Now I had a good excuse for being a little late for dinner. My wife would never get mad for a Tiffany ring. It is about 6.16 grams and polished to like new. Oh and the cuff was a winner too. fits my arm and no slop. I made it out of an old no parking sign and the factory bottom section. It took me a few hours to create, but I'm happy with it. Have to give a shout out to Kac for the hand digger, Still works great and hasn't failed me yet.

  43. It would be nice to understand some of the underlying function. I know it is kind of getting into the weeds and many don't care to. I would like to see NM give more in depth operational discussion. A supplemental guide beyond the basics in the owner's manual. The detectors are so capable. I want to know how to run it at it's best. Perhaps Dilek will see this and chime in.

  44. Thanks for the info. I feel like it scratches the surface and takes away some of the trash and lack of knowledge. I guess word would travel quick if any 'real' amount of gold was found. The numbers of seekers would overwhelm any land rights as it has done in many areas with gold.

  47. Another couple of days behind the 6000, this time with the BT ML 100 headphones. They pair up effortlessly, perform brilliantly, H/phones take out that EMI that is introduced with the speaker, obviously the speaker is being over driven a bit to get the volume up to levels that allow the speaker to be heard in windy conditions. The volume is much like the volume on the Z, tis more then just audio gain. Anyhow the ML 100 headphones with their own volume controls, bring those faint signals in clear and stable as and further adds to the magic of the 6000. But I`m looking forward to trying out the Aventree aptX Band and stop those soggy ears that h/phones cause, being a long time user of Steve`s Insane Settings I go for Sens Auto+ and got to say those of you that are hesitant to use Bogenes settings will soon change your ideas, as JP says it "smashes those tiny targets" and at insane depths. Look out detectorists when ML pack the 6000 features into the next Z or maybe a software upgrade for our existing Zs.

I see these more complicated detectors -- lots of settings available -- as multiple detectors. Many detectors, especially those from the past, have few settings to change (and potentially confuse). Asking someone else for their settings has the advantage of a good starting point. Andy Sabisch's book has several example settings which he got from experienced (at the time) ML Equinox users from multiple continents. Those are helpful starting points. Yes, some people take such things too literally and fail to realize they are suggestions of things to try, not to lock onto. I know an extremely successful detectorist (I base that on his old coin finds collection) who let me try out his White's V3i. He was giving me all kinds of dos and don'ts which I didn't really appreciate/need but tolerated. I asked him about different settings and he said "oh, I just leave them in the defaults -- I don't need all that fancy adjustment". Then he said something else telling: "I probably should have just stayed with my White's DFX." No argument from me that detecting can be complicated, particularly in some sites and with certain goals. Not everyone wants to go that deeply into the endeavor. As long as everyone (super experienced user included) understands that everyone has different expectations, pain tolerance levels, time to invest, etc. then things flow more smoothly. I'm one of those in-between detectorists, not deeply experienced but wanting to "be like Mike". The 'Mikes' on this site seem to almost exclusively use 50 tones when dry land detecting for coins and relics. I tried it once -- went back to 5 tones. I tried it again later -- went back to 5 tones. I tried it a 3rd time -- back to 5 tones. Finally I realized I wasn't getting anywhere and was effectively (after the first couple attempts) wasting my time. I emphasize I, me, my. It's OK not to emulate the Mikes. (I also find some of the arguments of why 50 tones is 'better' misleading. But if a person's brain can handle it then it certainly makes sense. The more useful data available, the better the chances of identifying what is worth spending time digging.) I don't write this to counter the advice others have generously given in this thread, but rather to attempt to bring things to a middle ground (so to speak). I'm one of those who appreciates the advice of others and seek it often. I'm also one of those who realizes that the advice may not be for me. And when I give advice/suggestions and it seems to go in one ear and out the other, I can accept it and move on. I'm no worse having attempted to help one person and for whatever reason, not having accomplished that. The advantage of a forum is that maybe it helped someone else, including the advisor.

  49. I see Gerry did a interview with Coiltek on Youtube and he said to take the 15'' to where you found deep coins before. He said it could get you coins the stock coil missed.
