  1. Hey All - I can confirm we will definitely be making coils and release will be in first half of 2022. Coiltek Quality - Fully Minelab Approved and no need to break a coil to make a coil. We will be releasing more info on this in the coming months. Stay safe everyone. Trevor.

  2. I never dreamed I would find a spot like I did today, turned out to be my best silver coin day ever!! I've been on a 6 day hunt starting last Wed and ending Tuesday morning when I head home. I've been hitting a couple parks in the town I'm staying in and a couple of surrounding towns as well. I managed to get into some producing spots and have done pretty well with multiple silver days everyday. Today, my plan was to drove over to a town about 60 miles from here and hit a pretty big park that's been around awhile. I got up early, grabbed some breakfast and hit the road. About 20 miles in, I figure out I forgot my phone, so, I head back to the motel. I decided to stay here and look for a new spot so I googled the town and saw a couple of parks and schools that I decided to go check out. Well, none were in older neighborhoods, so I headed to a park that had produced last year. As I'm driving over there, I see an old high school that's been renovated and drive around back and see a big open area with old backstops in each corner. I decided what the heck, might as well stop and swing awhile, maybe I'll get lucky and find a wheat or 2 I started out in front of one of the backstops and get a copper hit. The shovel slid easily into the ground and I pulled out a memorial. I move straight out towards the pitchers mound and get another penny signal. I go to dig a plug and the ground was hard as a rock, nothing but compacted rock and gravel. I take my pinpointer and scan the ground, thankfully I got a hit. I began to chisel my way thru the rocks and pop out a wheat, oh yes, it's on now. The next target was another wheat, again, within range of the pinpointer, out pops another wheat. Now I'm getting excited, within 5 minutes I have 2 wheats, that's good sign. The next 2 hits were funky signals and turned out to be mercs, both shallow and picked up by the pinpointer. Every swing of the coil sounded like a machine gun, 6-7 iron targets per swing. I'm in the middle of an iron infested spot, with compacted ground. I hunted for the next 30 minutes and ended up with 3 merc and 6 wheats, no clad, I'm only 45 minutes into this hunt and it's only 8:15 am, gonna be a long day lol. This old playground area is about 1 square block, so, I head off toward the other backstop and within 50 I get a hit. The ground is as soft as butter and out comes a clad dime. I hunted about 30-45 minutes at the other backstop and dug nothing but deep clad. I realized real quick that the spot I was in must have been avoided because of the rock hard ground and all the iron so I headed back. I decided to start grid off the area and see how far this hot spot goes. Turns out it's roughly a 60-70 foot area in front of the backstop. The soil outside of this spot is completely different and relatively trash free. I guess they dug out the original soil and missed this area, I have no idea. I hunted all day, started at 7:30 and called it quits at 5:45 when I quit digging keepers. I never thought I would stumble on a place like this just out of pure dumb luck. I'm glad I decided to stay in town. I ended up beating my single day silver coin finds of 13. Sorry for any grammar or punctuation errors, I'm celebrating with a couple of cold ones:)

  3. Puttered around on some old stomping grounds, further up from where I found the gold ring with yellow diamond and found an 1881 IH penny with heavy patina so won't bother to clean it and a thin what seems to be platinum ring. No stones in it and the casting and finish is a little rough so thinking it was a custom piece. Also found an old pewter spoon, was a little spread out in the hole but managed to find all the pieces. Never thought the Apex would do so well with jewelry as it does. Audio on it is so simple.

  4. Elliptical coils for me please, 6x 8 and 9x14. Rounds are great for open country, but around rocks and manzanita, ellipticals are the key to my success. I hope Coiltek follows Minelabs lead and constructs the coils with a hollow underside to keep weight down. Brian.

  5. Coiltek responded on this thread that they are indeed making GPX 6000 coils. I moved the post and all the ones that responded to a new thread. Please go thereto talk Coiltek, and stay on this thread for X Coil.

  6. Rogue saltwater wave - probably better off just looking for a good deal on a used one. I got my last DFX used, real clean, for $250, so I'd expect to pay $200 or less for a clean XLT.

  8. We had a 3 party hunt scheduled Condor, LuckyLarry and myself. I set sail East Bound and down on I-80 to Rye Patch from Reno. I texted the Boyz and received a text back from Condor that his Truck was sick and couldnโ€™t make this trip! Well just meant more Rib Eyes on my dinner plate! LuckyLarry, was on his way from Elko to Rye Patch and the timing was perfect he followed me in to our camp site! Temperature Gauge was a solid 97 at the 3 Oโ€™Clock hour. Larry, hunted out here in the Hey Days of Rye Patch. He was just learning Gold Detecting back then and scored many nice nuggets! But, ended up being a Top Notch Relic Hunter. Thatโ€™s how we met. We met on the Internet with me needing some old Relicโ€™s ID. He was my go to guy to tell me the history of anything Iโ€™d dig up in the Goldfields of California. Of course, I avoided these extra trashy old camp sites and would pass the location to Larry for his Relic hunts when he traveled to California. We set up camp and hopped into my RZR Buggy into the heat to swing our 6000โ€™s on my old patches. Finding left over nuggets that our older models missed, but the heat! Had to hit a 100 before some clouds moved in to cool things down! Them clouds had rain and in front of them was the wind. Headed back to Camp to beat the rain, as I left my Trucks Windows half open which was the way the wind and rain was blowing in. Made it back to camp wet Windows up with a gust of wind that had to be over 50 mph. Well early to bed with showers on and off and the next morning with more rain to heavy to detect in which gave us time to eat some cookies and for me to remember where some more old patches where at to swing on. Gone for 4-Days with 2 1/2 days of good detecting! We ended up with 20 Dinks each! Two Lucky ๐Ÿ€ guys with plenty of smiles for our efforts fighting Mother Natures last blasts of Summer! I figure Iโ€™m now about 80% done with having the 6000 over our old patches in Rye Patch. Iโ€™m sure we left gold in the patches we hunted for further visitsโ€ฆnever can get them all and every day is a different day! Until the next Hunt! LuckyLundy

  9. My votes are for 14โ€ x 9โ€, and if at all possible, a 10โ€ x 6โ€. If a big coil is in the offing, 18โ€ round. All mono, though some may crave more DD selections also.

  10. For the last few months, I've been detecting with Atrex .. and .. I'm also testing ... But lately I've also used XP ORX, Equinox 800, AKA Signum, .. Rutus Alter71, Etrac ... and Whites for detection. Spectra Vision .., As part of a serious and direct comparison and .. however, I use a much larger number of detectors, especially to compare certain specific detection properties .... for different detectors .... I take the detector as a detection tool ... for various detection situations ... and in this case I put my trust and experience in a given model that may be the best in the given situation .. In the end, Rutus ATREX himself did not disappoint me at noon ... and he brought really nice finds ....ATREX ..software 1.0.2 whit Multifilter.. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Ps: Alain......Eliptical coil "HF" in ORX will be good for 2D separation..as also for work ... as well as good content in red hematite soil for low-conductivity targets ..

  15. Surely there must be an buyer's outlet for old astronaut suits???? That would solve everything....no modifications needed. From the pictures, you are half way there anyways. It would be nice to have something that you could never feel the cold no matter what the temperature of the water was. Also those rings are sweet looking. I'm gold-less so far for 2 hunts, so I get to stare at your gold to make me feel better. Nice hunt there Joe.

  16. Like my Excalibur's, every thing I use has been reworked for what I need them to do.. Unfortunately, the suit looks nothing like the factory's for I've changed everything from the boots up to the neck seal, I'm sure they would get a laugh out of what has been done to it. With what I have planned for the next Generation of my winter hunting suit, I should be able to hunt and be warm but just not as long.. Hoping I can push hunt time to 2 hours.. before I could hunt as long as I wanted. Here is the old drysuit setup. On the new winter drysuit, all will be the same except the boots..

  17. That time of the year again. While throwing more wood in the stove I noticed a break in the clouds and saw our first snow on the mountain...probably down to 5-5500'. days are already getting shorter so you'd best be getting out there if/when you can. Raining down low today so sidelined....

  18. I had another great day hitting a couple of different parks on my week long hunting trip. First park gave up 2 halves, 1 silver, 1 clad. The Walker was in the same hole as a wheat and a silver quarter. I found another silver dime, the Cracker Jack token and a couple of wheats and then the park went cold on me. I drove across town to another area and the first keeper was a silver ring followed by a Merc. Not much after that except for a wheat and some clad. I drove over to another little town to scope things out, turned out to be a bust. The town didn't even have a park it was so small. I headed back to the town I'm staying in and went to a park that I did very well at last July. Not 10 minutes in I get another silver quarter, followed by 3 wheats. On my last pass, I look ahead of me and see some folded green, a $20 bill lol. I'll be coming back to this park tomorrow and spend the day looking for the keepers I missed last time.

  19. Well, boohoo. I was going to suggest an Archimedes Principle specific gravity measurement which should fairly easily separate silver (/alloy) from platinum (/alloy). Much tougher to distinguish gold from platinum unless one alloy is a lot purer than the other. Maybe platinum jewelry is always very high content of platinum? Anyone know? Glad the Garrett Apex is working well for you. It needs some love after some of the reviews it got when it was released.

  23. Congrats on your best silver day ever! ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿผ Your hunt brings back quite a few great memories for me...Iโ€™ve hunted parks in my locale for years that produced silver days from the low teens to the mid twenties...even one park nearly 150 miles from me that produced a 31 silver day (my PB). All of these parks were just regular, old parks from the โ€˜20โ€™s-40โ€™s era, without any ground movement. Those days around me are long gone, unfortunately. I wish I could go on extended road trips like you do, but thatโ€™s not possible for me at the moment...maybe someday! Anyway, Iโ€™m rambling......Congrats again on your memorable hunt! 27. I was using the V8 coil in the video. I have to turn the sensitivity down at least halfway or more to get rid of most of the falsing. A smaller coil footprint and faster recovery help reduce the problem. If I try that with the V12 in relic mode, it is pretty much unusable in the "hot spots".
    2 points
  28. Does the Vanquish false like that with smaller coils? Seems like dropping the sensitivity way down might help reduce the high pitch target wrap but don't know. People often don't mention the Simplex for new users, I have seen it in action and it looks like an easy and very capable machine. Also the Apex which has been doing incredibly well for me in tough areas.

  30. I'll compare and contrast the AT Max and Equinox 800 based on the fact that I currently use an AT Max and used to have a Vanquish 540 and Equinox 600. The only reason(s) to get a Garrett AT Max over the Equiunox 800 is b/c one or more of the following applies to you: 1. You love Garrett products and have extreme loyalty to them. 2. You love buying products made in the USA. 3. You prefer your metal detector to use replaceable batteries and/or AA batteries 4. You prefer an S-shaft design (although the Equinox pod can be mounted on an S-shaft if you really wanted, but it looks very janky, in my opinion). 5. You need a truly reliable, all-weather metal detector. Yes, the Equinox is waterproof, but it's not as reliable as te AT Max in that regard. 6. You can find the AT Max for much cheaper than the Equinox 800. 7. You like the idea of having access to numerous aftermarket coils and experimenting with them. 8. You don't plan on doing any extensive saltwater beach hunting. TL;DR: Unless you have a very specific or unique reason for getting the AT Max, you're better off with the Equinox 800 (ignoring the price difference).

  39. I wouldn't worry about the AT Max being said to be more reliable, it has a 2 year warranty, the Equinox has a 3 year warranty. Minelab have a service center in NZ for the Equinox, for the AT Max you'd be shipping it back to the USA. My Equinox has not skipped a beat and I treat it like a tool, not a precious piece of equipment. It's had a hard life and it's got to be around 3 years old now. I got it as soon as they came out.

  41. Gore vent intro! The little white spot on the battery door! If a permanent seal is added that defeats the Gore vent, than not only would that probably void the warranty, but also, some other spot on the Pod would most likely fail due to pressure inequalities! Also, if the Gore vent is loose, or compromised, water will take the easiest route to enter! ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘

  43. Iโ€™ll skip the contrasting and cut to the chase - itโ€™s hard to go wrong with Equinox 800 for almost any type of detecting. To date, it does more different detecting tasks well than any other detector made. Itโ€™s the first, and still only, true โ€œdo-it-allโ€ detector on the market. Iโ€™ve been detecting for near on 50 years now, enjoy everything from nugget detecting to mask and snorkel saltwater detecting, and everything in between. If I had to have one, and only one detector, for the widest range of uses, it would be an Equinox 800.

  44. Most of the time if you get to talking with them, they end up being OK, but from a distance you get the stink eye. ๐Ÿ˜„ I think the problem was that I was detecting an area he already covered. There were two holes on this little island spot that emerges as the tide recedes, that he dug. When I left there were another 10 holes dug there. I think he was worried I found some great stuff. But I was digging it all, so mostly deep pull tabs and other junk. Thanks. If I lived closer to the beach, the hunts would be shorter. But driving all that way, I have to get the most out of it. Once a week is not enough but that's what I get, so I maximize my hunts. Usually my body tells me when we're done ๐Ÿ™„

  45. I had pondered the effect of the bolt, especially the large head size. What made me largely discount it was my thoughts on the Fisher F75 etc coil fixing arrangement, with the 11" x 7" bi-axial coil. I think those coil ears are not ideal. The tapered reinforcing ribs are OK, except they should NOT be tapered where the bolt/nut head sits, as the taper causes the bolt to bend significantly as it passes through the ears/clevis. I machined down my ribs to give a flat bolt/nut surface. Back to the Eqx - Clearly the bolt on that will bend easily, too, so ears that are bent inwards will not be a issue. You won't get much problem with excessive force being concentrated on the lower part of the ear, for example, because the bolt head will twist to align with the coil ear. However .. if you fancy some experimentation, here's an idea: Make a thin rubber washer the size of the bolt-head. Make a plastic washer to sit above it. Repeat for the other ear. Fit the pair under the bolt/nut head, rubber against the ear. This will allow more load-spreading. Thin rubber could be salvaged from a bicycle inner-tube.

  46. I agree , a lot of iron falsing ( high pitch ) with the Vanquish in the high iron trash. Over here for my European conditions I finally prefer to recommend a Quest X5 or X10 for a total newbie, rather than a Vanquish . The Vanquish is a very good machine but its audio is a little tricky ... The Apex has a better iron filtering than a Vanquish in the irons . However the best ones for me are the XPs Deus/Orx , almost silent in nail beds ...

  47. Three years ago when I started detecting .. my thought was not buying the "best" detector .. but if I was even going to like detecting at all .. I wasn't thinking if I needed a detector that could pull a 10 inch dime out of 100 nails .. as soon as I started seriously looking at detectors, everyone said I should buy the Nox 800 .. the latest and greatest .. I wasn't going to spend that kind of money for a detector, since I wasn't sure if I was really going to like detecting to begin with .. I am smart enough to learn anything and if one man can do it so can another, but why spend that kind of money on a whim? .. but some people do .. anyway, I spent a little more than I was thinking I wanted to start out with (thanks to a scratch off ticket), and got a pinpointer along with the machine .. by the time I realized I was hooked on detecting, I had found enough in clad coins to buy any detector I wanted .. I had also detected with a few people who had done it for years .. I asked them enough questions about their machines and watched what they were finding, compared to what I was finding, and went from there, now knowing what I wanted in a detector .. most, if not all, of that clad could have been found with a $150 detector. That would be my advice to someone wanting to start detecting .. don't get caught up in what anyone thinks is "best" or what brand you should buy .. see if you like detecting and if it is something you'll be spending a lot of free time doing or maybe it is something that is not really for you (it would suck to find out you don't like to metal detect after spending a grand on equipment, or even $500) .. spend as little money as possible .. realize, even with the most expensive detector, you are going to dig trash .. save your clad, until you know detecting is something you really like doing .. give it a couple years .. by then you'll know what you want or need in a detector and have enough money in coins for a good down payment or out right purchase. There is one oldtimey guy I see out detecting all the time near me .. he has detected for many, many years and still uses his radio shack metal detector and has no plans on buying a better detector, all he likes to detect is quarters. That is detecting to him, his enjoyment is in how many quarters he finds in a hunt and he finds a lot of them. No reason for him to own even a $150 detector. That $50 detector has paid for itself over and over. When I was younger I had two real fast cars .. one was a Mercury police interceptor and one was a Pontiac Trans Am .. the Mercury was a 100 times the car the Trans Am was .. way faster, handled better, had a lot of room for doing stuff, from a drivers perspective, it just didn't get much better .. but the girls really liked the Trans Am, not so much the Mercury, even though the bucket seats and center console kept them at a distance .. both got me to the other end of the road, though.

  48. I would not be too hard on your self! The coil ears fail EVERYWHERE because of MFG. DEFECT! Too much pressure will also crack through the bolt holes as well. I know there is only one fix. As guys still break coil ears with stiffeners regardless if their attached with hokey zip ties or not. BELOW, it the only pure fix. 1. Take any coil support that is not made of infill and epoxy it to the coil and coil ears making it as one. 2. Make a custom set of side plates and epoxy them to each side for further support. I have 7 months of full use time on my 11" coils already without issue. 7 days a week 3-4 hour hunts, that's about 760 hours of use. In the worst environment possible , the pounding surf of the Pacific ocean. I have recently completed my 15 Minelab coil. Each coil ear is now 1/2" thick.
