  1. With the weather extremely hot and dry here in Central Texas. I've been hanging around the rivers and the lakes taking advantage of the low water levels. Last few times out I haven't had to get into the water because there's so much exposed ground to hunt. I hit two different swim beaches yesterday and they both paid off in a big way. First place, I wasn't 30 minutes in when I got a 25 on the equinox. I was expecting to dig either a copper penny or clad dime. I almost fell over when I saw it in the sand. This was my second class ring in 2 weeks. The first one was tungsten or stainless and I was able to return it the same week that I found it. This one turns out to be a Texas A&M college class ring weighing an impressive 33g. I should be able to track the owner down fairly easy. The second beach I had to spend two and a half to three hours before I finally found a 9 g platinum ring. which rang up at 10 on the Nox. On the inside it says My Forever 11- 10- 18. I was able to add a little silver to the day by coming across a Mercury dime. After 7 1/2 hours in the heat I finally had to give it up and head back to the house. I dug a lot of holes but it was very rewarding at the end of the day. That cold beer never tasted so good šŸ™‚

  2. At the end of the story, I finally ended up to buy an Anderson dive shaft to use the D2 properly. Nothing to say about the thing and the lovely appearance of it, but just a bit expensive if shipping costs and importation tax added to the base pricešŸ˜¬. As usual I'm pissed cause making a total of the money I spent for this unit I'm way over the old Ctx and not to mention that I still want the 9" not available when I bought the detector. I still want to approach the second dive with itšŸ˜¶. After the first attempt with the original shaft I just refused to do it again.

  3. I got out with Ozzie for an early morning hunt July 4th. I saw a great-horned owl on my way to the park, and figured that was a good omen. Proceeded to dig nothing except modern trash, modern coins, and fishing lead of all types. We were in a section of the park that has a disc-golf course on it. it is a pretty famous course, so there are a LOT of golfers on the weekends. It adds one more element to paying attention to your surroundings. Most golfers are very reluctant to throw a disc unless they know you see them, so it leads to plenty of pauses....every once in a while, you do see a really skilled throw, so not a terrible deal. I got to the point where I knew I had to quit for the day...just wanted to hit a smallish area around an old tree that Ozzie has gotten some Barbers out of in a prior hunt. Old trees are my favorite spots...less chance of people re-grading areas, throwing more soil on top, etc. Got a really nice high signal, but hard to pinpoint. turned out to be a nice grade Mercury dime, vertical but only 6 inches deep. Went about 20 feet further, got a lower signal, more broken but not many grunts. Got the wonderful lowest pinpoint tone range, and figured large deep copper. At full pinpointer depth plus a little, out comes Ms. Draped Bust Liberty. Still working on the date, but can see the 179?. Isnt a 6 so has to be 7, 8, or 9. I wish i had sandy soil, but large cents are still way cool, even when they come out toasty. Heading back there again soon.

  5. Hey Guys/Gals, Here in the Southwest, it's now hot (over 100+ degrees) and higher humidity due to the Summer Monsoon storms. That being said, many are still out roaming the goldfields during the early morning hours in hopes for a few gold nuggets. A friend and I are still out and about, hunting in the morning hours until the heat/humidity or the storms run us out. Spending most of the time in the gully bottoms, the bedrock can get as high as 140-150 degrees making it difficult to stay on the ground too long. This has been a weird year, we have yet to see a single Rattlesnake to date. I have seen just about everything else, lizards, small rodents, bugs and other snakes, but no Rattlesnakes to boot. I'm not sure if it's the drought or what, but normally my friend and I would run across dozens of Rattlesnakes by this time. I'm not complaining, just seems weird this year, but maybe we just have been lucky to miss them. On another note, I stumbled across this nice gold nugget a few weekends ago. We were metal detecting with the Minelab GPZ 7000's in a new area and I got this faint signal right in the center of the wash bottom. I almost didn't dig it, as I haven't found a single nugget prior to this targets, so normally I'm not going to dig deep targets right out in the center of any gulch unless I have a reason to believe there is gold. I guess I have to be happy about this one, it was well over a foot deep on bedrock. The nugget was just over 1/4 ounce in weight, nothing huge, but sure was a surprise to say the least! The nugget lead us into a new area that has potential and paid for gas (almost $6/gallon). A few other smaller gold nuggets were also found not shown. Keep in mind, hunting this time of year, make sure you hydrate well, wear light clothing, pack enough liquids, wear sunscreen, gloves, hat and snake gaitors. These are just some recommendations for all the years of searching the desert regions during the Summer. I also recommend also hunting with a friend if possible and carrying 2-way radios so you can communicate back in forth and tell your buddy when you find that big gold nugget! Wishing you all a beautiful gold nugget under that searchcoil. Keep it swinging, Rob

It appears to me they're not as primitive as some might believe and possibly better conditions than in the US? Sick Leave The number of PAID sick days in Malaysia also depends on the duration of employment. Thus, those employees whose illness doesnā€™t require hospitalization are entitled to: 14 days per year if employed for 1-2 years, 18 days per year if employed 2-5 years, 22 days per year if employed longer than 5 years.

  13. Nice report Jeff. I have reasons for thinking that the Equinox is about as good as things will get, and that new machines will be doing well roughly equaling it, which is essentially what is going on here. They all will have a tiny edge on some targets in some ground in some way, but most people objectively evaluating them are likely to find that on the vast majority of normal targets all three will get the job done. There are limitations here that all metal detectors face, and the simple truth is we are up against performance walls that are difficult, if not impossible, to surpass. So when anyone claims any one of these machines is so great that it makes the others irrelevant, they will have to excuse me for not taking them seriously beyond that point. In my opinion if anyone gets real kudos in all this, itā€™s Nokta for coming so far in such a short time, producing a top performer that surpasses anything made by Garrett or First Texas. And for a bargain price at that. The D2? Well, seriously, costing what it does, youā€™d have to expect itā€™s going to do well, or XP would be in real trouble with the price point. Iā€™ve got one, great detector, but some of the early rhetoric was overblown, to put it nicely. Long story short nobody needs to defend or hype any one of these machines. They are all very capable detectors. Anyone that canā€™t do well with with one of these models needs to go back to detecting school, rather than blame the detector. We are fortunate to have not one, but three great options to choose from, all delivering good top tier performance.

  16. April 23 1937 I wasnā€™t up very long and was making a good breakfast when a deputy came trudging into camp. What now I thought? He was investigating the incident with Slim and the shooting demonstration from last night. I played dumb and told him I had no idea what he was talking about. He asked the crew and they all said the same. Slim was not in his tent. He must have seen the deputy coming. The law dog told us that Slim was bad news and that if we were hiding him it would not go well for us. I told him we didnā€™t know any ā€œSlimā€ and had seen many drifters come and go on or near our claims. The deputy said he had a warrant for his arrest for reckless use of a firearm as well as strong armed robbery. I just told him that if we see any strangers we will let him know. With that the deputy walked out of camp. I continued with my breakfast and about fifteen minutes later Slim walked back into camp. He had been hiding at the edge of the woods and heard everything the deputy had told me. I asked Slim what the facts were. Slim said it was all a bunch of bull and he never robbed anyone. He said that one night he had scared the hell out of a guy and the man gave him some money just to avoid a well deserved beating. Slim said the guy had made some remarks he didnā€™t like and he was about to kick the shit out of him. As for the shooting display with Dutch, he said it was all in good fun. I let it slide but told Slim he might want to avoid going into town for a spell. Slim just looked at me with a grin and said there would need to be way more deputies in that town to take him back to jail. I just shrugged and said itā€™s his decision and we all went to work for a change. We busted our tails and tried to make a good day of it in the pit but only got one ounce. I think we have another week or so of gravels to finish up and then it will be time to move our operation. I will be glad to get out of there as every time I turn my head I think I see my dead brother. Itā€™s giving me the creeps. TO BE CONTINUED .................

  17. I hit the wet sand for 4 1/2 hours with the Excal today hoping to find some goodies during low tide. Targets were few and far between but I did manage a couple dozen coins and about half that number pieces of jewelry although most of it was the cheap stuff. Exceptions were 2 silver religious medals and a silver ring but the find of the day was an eyeball find. As I was nearing the end of the hunt I spied a pair of sunglasses in the surf under a few inches of water. They had the "Ray Ban" logo on the lens but I know that there are fakes out there. When I got home I took a closer look at the sunglasses and I could see that they were of good quality. Not only that but I couldn't find any scratches or blemishes whatsoever. No doubt the most pristine pair of sunglasses I have ever found. I will be putting these babies to good use!

  19. Just a heads up if you can't find the owner and decide to melt. Send to Mid-west. The reason is they buy gold out right if you send in less than 3oz. So no matter what "K" you send in they pay you for 12k. And I believe they charge 5% for the service. I found out after a few send in's.. So the melt on 33 grammer is 12k/.500 (Not 10k as stamped) Also, Great hunt!! Wow!

  25. The price of gold is driven by a number of different factors starting with basic supply and demand. Those drivers are more than just production and non-investment consumption, though. Price drivers get more complicated from an investor's perspective as gold is generally priced in US dollars and will move depending on what the dollar is doing relative to other currencies. Price is further complicated by the fact the dollar and gold move relative to real interest rates (think a treasury yield minus inflation). If real rates move up or are at least expected to relative to other currencies than investors will push up the dollar. A higher dollar would generally be a negative factor for the price of gold. Also, if investors can earn a positive real yield than gold is less attractive as it doesn't pay anything. If real yields are negative, than than gold is more attractive as the dollar is likely losing buying power. On Russia, the gold it produces and wants to sell will likely leak into the market. Both India and China have been buying Russian crude.

  27. I don't see any obvious VG in there, what you are showing in these photos appears to mostly be iron oxides. The quickest way to find out if you have free gold in quartz is to buy a dolly pot and a gold pan. Or send a sample in for assay. You could have gold in there which you don't immediately see by eye.

  29. April 22 1937 Part Four The shots started going down and some of the crowd was cheering on their local favorite but some were hollering encouragement out to Slim. Slim started out downing a shot a minute. He told us to call out each minute. Jeff was just downing them as fast as he could put them down. After fifteen minutes Jeff had downed twenty shots and Slim was sitting comfortably at fifteen. Jeff was starting to look a little funny and his speech was beginning to slur just a bit. Slim kept up the shot per minute pace all the way to thirty minutes where he overtook Jeff. Jeff tried to keep up but at the forty minute mark he attempted to stand up and lost all of his efforts as everything he had consumed came up. He had made it to thirty five drinks. Seeing as Slim had now made the count of forty and had won the contest he stopped. It was hard to believe but he was able to get up and walk out the door on his own. Then he came back in and collected his money. The crowd gave him a big cheer. He bought drinks for the bar and the crew stayed inside while I followed Slim outside and into the parking lot where he heaved up what he had drunk. We went back inside and stayed until closing time. I didnā€™t see Slim drink anything more that night but the rest of the crew and I had ourselves a hell of a good time. Some of the guys in the crowd came over to me and said how bad they felt when they heard about what happened to my brother. They also thanked us for cleaning out the rif raf that had taken over the area. It seemed that the law was next to worthless there and wasnā€™t up to doing their jobs. What they had failed to do we did for them. All in all it was a good night except I felt bad for Dutch. I was hoping things would be ok between him and Slim. TO BE CONTINUED ...............

  31. Like CPT_Ghostlight said and you discovered, changing frequency between high and low to sort of reverse discriminate sub gram gold will also discriminate similar weight AND sized low conductors like lead and brass. I remember some of your earliest posts where you wanted some detector and settings suggestions for cherry picking surface to 6ā€ deep gold. However a sub gram say .5 gram sized piece of aluminum or aluminum foil is a very big target as far as size. A beaver tail from a ring pull tab can be an easy target to detect using any frequency but a .5 gram gold nugget, .22 short shell casing or .5 gram piece of lead is a far smaller target and moderate iron mineralization may pull the target ID and audio response close to the bottom of the iron range. If you accept all target IDs and have your iron volume turned up a bit, you may still hear those small low conductor targets grunting like they are iron. So you could use your idea to try and identify small gold nuggets but you will still be digging plenty of similar sized and weight low conductor trash.

  32. On the gold fields dig what you can. Shallow target discrimination is a bad choice because the hole is easily to do. Deep target discrimination is a worst choice because most target will not register on them. How do you think you would do at this location. The wife and I got a dozen or two nuggets there but it was what got me on a really good patch within a mile or so. What you see is where we stopped. several hundred tiny bits of rusted junk was our limit.

  33. Using 20 or 40 kHz for gold nugget prospecting, yeah I have done it when EMI was really bad. Otherwise, at least in the high mineralization I hunt in, multi works way better especially on hot ground that is hard to ground balance. I have never tested this, but it is conceivable that using 40 kHz could up average some detectable small nuggets enough to keep them from being pulled down into the iron range by mineralization when using the Gold Modes. Using 4 kHz in one of the other modes........why?
    1 point
  34. Are you referring to using this technique for gold jewelry detecting or gold nugget detector prospecting? I get that all of us who hunt for gold jewelry are looking for an advantage. When I am gold jewelry hunting with the Equinox, I use multi and I listen for very good sounding targets in the correct ID range. Just like coins in good shape, gold rings, pendants and other larger gold items that are not being effected by really high mineralization and depth, will sound similar to most USA coins with steady numbers and tones that sound fairly equal in either swing direction and with clearly defined edges to the tone. Aluminum objects can sound like that also but they usually have less defined edges during swings. They can sound elongated with no hard hit in the center of the tone and often have more than one target ID. It is hard to explain. I will say, practicing with US nickels can really train the ear for how clear and percussive they sound. Many of the gold rings I have found with the Equinox also had those sound characteristics. Using single frequency for diagnostic purposes may work. However, depending on depth, mineralization and the frequency being used, the target IDs can be skewed quite a bit and if you have notches set in a discrimination pattern, they may no longer apply.....
    1 point
  35. The tiny item issue is easily solved by notching out target id numbers 1, 2, 3, or 4. Each one knocks out successively larger bits, so just experiment a bit and decide how much low end disc to apply. I used this to great effect in my UK detecting to not waste time on bb and smaller targets.

  36. Thank you. I will be doing something similar soon. I may report on it and I may not. Mostly I was waiting for the Legend's 1.08 update and was also hoping for another Deus 2 update before doing much of a head to head to head comparison between the three using very similar settings. Now that the Legend has its Pitch Tones option and adjustable iron bias in all modes a head to head between them on deep targets in iron mineralization should be very interesting and fun!

  38. I am not surprised. Me, Andy B. and Steve H. along with Chase and others have all noticed and reported that Deus 2 is just not really sensitive to extremely small targets either in air tests or especially in moderately to highly iron mineralized ground, that Equinox hits easily and that the Legend is really good at too. I dug enough of the obvious unflagged targets to get a good handle on what most were.....two shallow coin spills, several shallow pull-tabs, several crown bottle caps, etc. All three detectors were hitting those targets for sure. I did dig two really small targets....one was an incredibly small piece of foil and another was a tiny piece of iron. Both were under 2 mm and were just under the surface. Deus 2 hit them if they were almost touching the coil. Equinox and Legend (I used the Legend to recover those two tiny ones) hit them in the ground so roughly 2" deep accounting for the grass. For gold prospecting, this Deus 2 insensitivity kind of sucks. For coin, jewelry and relic hunting in trash of all sizes, this lack of sensitivity acts as a form of discrimination and is definitely a blessing in disguise and a good thing, compared to the Equinox which hits way too many smaller targets in that kind of situation. Digging 2mm and smaller bits of screen wire at relic sites all day with the Equinox is not fun. Deus 2 was running 0.71. I don't have any experience with any other software version. Legend was running 1.07. Just did the update to 1.08 last night and I haven't remotely begun to see what it is like......since it is truly a massive update. I tried to make this testing as fair as possible and well within the limits of what these detectors can do. I could have fabricated some extreme situation and made them all look bad........but I was not trying to make one detector look bad or another look incredible. I just wanted to give readers that are interested in these detectors, especially those that have similar ground mineralization, a good look at what they can do on normal depth (surface to 10") typical USA coin sized targets.

  39. If you ever had Covid and still had to work with it or its after effects, the QA/QC will not be there. I can only imagine now that this is the case for many things that were produced over the last couple years and will continue. I finally got Covid this past week and if this is mild Covid I can not imagine what it was like before. I can tell you for certain that if I was in a factory with this I would not give 2 shits what comes out and would just want to lay down and rest my body and brain. The brain fog is terrible and the forgetfulness is disturbing, let alone the other flu/cold like symptoms.

  40. There is nothing better than having choices, each and every one of these detectors is obviously good so now people can choose which suits them best by features or attributes they like not having to worry one lags well behind the others in performance. We are in a really good place for general purpose VLF's now so it's happy times. i agree about Nokta, what an achievement and they should be quite proud of themselves leaping well ahead of well established rusted on old detector manufacturers, hopefully they can do the same with their gold prospecting PI.

  43. My XP Deus ll on a Andersons detector shaft and lower rod. I like it!! I had to modify the Andersons shaft a little bit. Even in the last button hole it was way to long for me. I am not a tall person. I almost sent it back because if you don't use the button holes the only thing holding the lower rod is the little thumb screw on the side and it is not strong enough to keep the coil from moving around. I happened to remember that I had a Pluggers shaft lock that I had purchased several years ago. So I removed the Andersons shaft lock and replaced it with the Pluggers. So now I can adjust it wherever I want without using the button holes. I also used a Dremel tool to make the end that attaches to the coil smaller so it doesn't rub on the top of the coil.

  44. April 22 1937 Part Three When we got back inside the entire crowd was all stirred up. Some had come out to witness the activities while others were watching from the windows. Slim had put on quite a show. One of the guys came over and wanted to shake our hands and buy us drinks. We accepted the offer but Slim had an idea of his own. He hollered out inquiring who was the best whiskey drinker in town. One of the men said Jeff Johnson could outdrink any man in town. Slim told the guy to go get him as he wanted to challenge him to a drinking contest for $50. The guy went to get him. Then Slim came over to me and quietly asked if Iā€™d stake him the $50 as he was broke. I said sure and eventually Jeff Johnson came walking in. He was over six feet in height and must have weighed in at 250 pounds. Now the crowd was surrounding the table we were at and Jeff and Slim set up the rules. The bartender would time the contest out at exactly one hour. Shots would be poured for Slim and Jeff as they downed each glass. Whoever had drunk the most shots after one hour won the prize. However, the winner had to keep the whiskey down and be able to walk out of the tavern on his own accord at the end of the hour. The barkeep brought over two bottles and poured out the first two shots. The contest was on. TO BE CONTINUED ................

  46. April 21 1937 Part One We had a good night's rest and went right to work early. We had our best day with five ounces. John and I couldnā€™t believe it. Somehow we had found us a sweet spot of glory gravel. Slim said heā€™d never seen gold like that but had heard tales in town that weā€™d mined thousands of ounces out here. I didnā€™t say much other than donā€™t believe all the bull shit being passed around about us. After supper Slim said the crew should go into town and celebrate. He kept talking and eventually had John on his side. I, for one, was tired of letting the town people control us so I asked Sarge and Ben if they were good with guarding camp while we went in. They said they were fine with it but didnā€™t exactly think it was a good idea. So John, Will, Hudson, Slim, and me rode into town and parked at the side lot of the tavern. When we walked in it was really packed. All the tables were taken and the bar was almost full except for a few spots at the far end. Then I saw someone whisper something to another guy and he turned to look in our direction. It was Dutch. He came walking over to me. It was clear he had been drinking and was in a bad mood. He was not happy we hadnā€™t included him as a permanent member of the crew. Then he spotted Slim. Dutch said he couldnā€™t believe we had hired on prison trash like Slim instead of him. Slim heard the remark. I was thinking this trip to town had been a real bad idea. TO BE CONTINUED .......................

  47. April 20 1937 About two in the morning I got woke up to the crack of a gunshot. Then three more. I pulled on my boots and crawled out of my tent. The rest of the crew was coming out as well. I looked around trying to get my bearings and there was Slim with both Colts in his hands. Before I could say anything Slim pointed with one of the Colts to the area just outside of the camp. I shined a flashlight and saw a lion laying on the ground. Slim was hooting and hollering to beat the band. He said the lion was sneaking into camp and he let him have it. He was drunk but twirled both pistols back into their holsters without a hitch. Sarge came running over. Slim hollered over to him and asked what was he doing, sleeping? Sarge let it pass. Slimā€™s bottle had run dry and he went into the supply tent and pulled another. I told the crew to get back to sleep and John and I sat out with Slim for a spell. Slim ended up drinking until nearly daybreak but somehow he had sobered up. John and I had sat up with him for a couple of hours and he was telling us all kinds of things. He said he had demons running around in his head from all his years in prison. He said the law dogs had stolen his youth and heā€™d lost it forever. I tried to tell him to just start fresh and make the best out of his new and free life. The crew were all pretty tired this morning but we did our jobs, even Slim. He seemed perfectly fine by noon and had calmed down and seemed pretty normal again. We ended up getting one ounce and I was glad to get back to camp where I intended on getting some sleep after supper. TO BE CONTINUED ..................

  49. Hello Newby and welcome to the forum. To me the White's MXT e-series is one of the best detectors, hands down. It never gave me the feeling to left something behind depending on the classic knobs and switches as they always let you know what the detectors power is. And it has a really wide selection of search coils, even 3rd party. The only disadvantage is wet saltwater beaches. But other than that you're fine and have a great starter. 50. I recieved a new permission last friday at a place I drive by going to work everyday. Based on my research a early homestead existed there at one time but it was all grown over for the past couple of years and needed a good brush-hogging. Months and years went by and finally it was mowed down decent enough to make a good swing. About 5 years ago I was going over aerial photographs and 1900 survey maps and marked over 20 locations in notheastern Oklahoma. One of them juat happened to be a block and a half from my office. Made a call to the owners and he gave me permission. This past Sunday I found a sword belt plate. We have had some Civil War activity around here but nothing like Virginia. So Im very fortunate to have found this.
