Got out for the weekend in search of more Military Camp sites off the main site we located a while back. Meet with the property owners and presented them with a display case that included the $1 gold coin I found. They were very surprised and happy to have it to display in their home located on the property. They had a 10 year old grand daughter visiting and wanted to know if it was all right if she tagged along for a few hours while we metal detected and of course we agreed. They got out a Ricomax metal detector for her to use and after finding some batteries for it we headed out. It didn't take long for us and her to realize that the Ricomax wasn't going to cut it. So she followed us around and took turns swinging one of our metal detectors from time to time and found a few relics of her own. Needless to say she was hooked and after she went back to the house for quick sandwich, begged grandma to come back out and metal detect some more. She was a joy to have around and it was good to see a young girl so interested in the hobby. After a hard day of hunting the property owners surprised us with a BBQ dinner and we sat and talked about life and politics for the remainder of the night. We arrived back the next day and of course the little girl was ready to go back out with us until she had to leave for a cousin's birthday party. Needless to say the weekend was a success. Below are my finds, you can times that by 3 and see we had a great hunt. Some of the highlights of the hunt were Eagle A, Eagle I and Eagle R buttons, j hooks, multiple cal bullets including .52 Sharps, .69, .58 and .54 minie balls, a 1857 dime and 1851 3 cent piece. We won't be getting back to that location until next Spring. In the mean time we'll be doing more research in hopes of locating more camp sites.17 points

All I can say is What a great time I had detecting with you Bob. Its not very often and almost never that you run into a person that has so many of the same thoughts, values and drive. You are for sure the first person to keep pace with me. If I didn't know better You might be my long lost brother. The real story is I was hoping to slow you up with breakfast HaHa. You were pretty much kicking my ass with the Quarters and dimes, while I was just finding the dreaded Penny's. Damn I thought that ring was rose gold. Deep too rang in on the 800 as a 8-9, For the most part I think we were doing way better than the other detectorist's. Not sure I saw one dig anything. The end of the day yielded a little sparkle and a few more clad. The older fella with the MXT was a hoot, he had a bunch of great stories about CW finds and couldn't believe how light your D2 was. A good 25 people stopped us and were interested in what we found, I hope a few of the people we talked with give detecting a try. Overall I think we did pretty well for 8+ hours, We each got a pocket full of change, Traded secrets on detecting, Had a lot of laugh's and became really good friends. This is what life is about. Sometimes you trip up on treasure that isn't buried by sand or dirt. I'm thankful to call you my friend. Oh and you forgot your my pretty pony lip gloss!!!9 points

After my Job interview went south, I went metal detecting , and I have another offer to rake some leaves for extra cash , so I prayed that if i should do that leaf raking that God would give me a sighn and let me find a gold ring today, and I did. had to XP ORX set up in coin deep , 70 gain 6 disc and 2.5 sweep speed at 17.2khz and at the 1st spot i was hunting , I got the thinking I should take a break and then go to another spot I have been to many time but never found any rings . I found a big chunk of iron and after it was out i got a quarter Hit , other wise someone had dug the cladd out pretty good , I was finding lots of tabs and foil , thats a good sign a ring could in theory be in the ground , and I got a signal 62 on the meter and expecting a tab, up comes a nice Gold cladda ring , marked Ireland inside. and another mark i cant read its a bit worn , but its pretty clear its not bling or plated its small but still weighing in at 2.4 grams. In the last picture you can see the big iron bolt that i dug out and after that an old crusty quarter was heard , yes it was masked ,someone else had stripped all the clad so i was luckey to get that quarter , but it was clearly masked8 points

On Saturday, September 24, I will be posting the real info on how I came to write the journal on Jed Stevens & crew. I will divulge the true story behind the journal. It will tell you what the journal was based on including what Jed really got in the way of gold and how he got it. It will contain information from the actual government report that started this entire journey including how he died and where he is buried. There will be lots of info in this entry for all to read. I am doing this because I feel I owe it to all the faithful readers who have stuck with me on this incredible ride as the journal approaches 200,000 views. This will put to rest some of the speculation but I also must warn you that it opens the door to more mystery. The quest for gold & treasure continues. To the readers here, I thank you.8 points

Went up to a local beach today hoping the jellyfish would be gone so I could finally water hunt there. Nope. Water was loaded with "stinging nettles" a jellyfish common in the Potomac and Chesapeake Bay. Some say they don't sting, but the poor screaming kid I helped today with white vinegar would beg to differ. I'm no stranger to pain but I don't want to get it the stupid way. ð I also saw a dead ray: They put up one heck of a fight when you catch them. Got there early, but immediately got some Intel from a local that an old couple had hit the place pretty hard, he told me where they were and what parts of the beach they hunted. Sounded like the couple Jamie and I met at VA Beach on Sunday, he said he comes to this beach. Undeterred, I hunted the waterline, the high tide line and the towel line. Today I had the D2 with a modified Beach Sensitive program where I stripped out all discrimination and lowered all filters. I wanted to try a "raw" setting that would hit on everything, as the Deus did not see a gold chain hunting last Sunday. I did pretty good for a hunted beach: 17 coins, oldest was probably 70s. At least I got more than one of everything, proving to me that my program was good. Trash was pretty bad, this is about 2/3ds of it, a guy offered to take some off me early on. Many of the items were sight picks. I can't leave anything I see behind. Then the day got strange, first I dug this gold plated hairpin with bling, my only jewelry of the day again restoring my faith in my settings. I would not have dug that. Next I went along the surf at a hotel, didn't find much but when I was coming back, I got a very strong 66, I thought "oh, one of the really nice pull tabs"... Nope. 1816 8 Maravedis Spanish coin, Ferdinand VII, Jubia mint I think. Looks like a "J" on the left side of the almost completely obliterated bust. The "8" is gone. Here is the reverse: Gotta love that ol' rugged cross. ð Not far from it I got a 62 and thought "nickel or generic pull tab"... Nope. 1916 Cuban Liberation 5 centavos, in great shape. Here's the other side: Why were these here? No corrosion, only pocket wear. The only explanation I have is that a visitor to this country dropped lucky coins. They're lucky for me now thanks! Then I found this: A large old hem weight. ðĪŠ The kind of stuff I find relic hunting. After that when coming back I ran into a couple whose boy was out trying out his new metal detector (a cheap Chinese knockoff that looked like a Garrett), he had his coil on backwards. ðĩ I went up to his Dad and asked him to call him over and we got him straightened out. I showed him my crazy finds, and gave him some quick tips on hunting, basically dig it all with a beep dig machine. Told them to let him detect their yard, and try to get him a farm permission, and to check metal detecting laws wherever they go. I also showed him how to properly swing the machine, and to not worry for a long time if all he gets is junk. I let him have the rest of that beach. I was paying for parking so I had to go. Odd day but very satisfying. ð5 points

Thanks for the replies. So far we've pulled a 2.7 oz, 4.5, 5.4, 9.2 and a 19oz. All with 6000's... I think the ground is fairly mild as I pulled my first ouncer with the 4500 and it ran alot smoother than the 6. Just wanted to run a massive coil over that ground, low n slow. Surely there's more big n deep ones we haven't heard with the 6. Gonna flag possible targets with the big guns n go back over with the 6 after taking layers off. Thanks again5 points

Minelab never stated 50% more depth, people are jumping to conclusions. That logic would be synonymous with saying that by adding 50% more horsepower to you cars engine, it would double your top speed ð5 points

Wasn't expecting this, but a forum member, @dogodog, texted me and said he was going to take a vacation about 2 hours from me and invited me to hunt the local beach. Got there at 8, he was there with his wife and a few other friends. He had made breakfast and invited me to join them, nice ð they were renting a house for a few days to catch an air show and get beach time. While we were out detecting we got a bit of a show from the Blue Angels and other aircraft: At one point we were watching the planes and got swamped by a wave ðĪĢ It was an incredibly nice day, pretty much everything event-wise is over at this beach as of Saturday, when we got there it was pretty empty but got busy later, surprising for a Sunday. I brought my Deus 2 to give it a real big beach run, I thought it would be better there with EMI than my Equinox, but found out that as long as we weren't too near the hotels it was quiet. We started out walking the surf line, the tide was coming in but we're got a chance at some low spots. The beach had been dragged earlier in the morning, we thought with the sifting machine but were later told by someone informed that they just bladed it. We really didn't find much along the surf, and ran into a few other detectorists. Pretty much everyone was saying there wasn't much out there, we were finding pennies and then I got a penny signal and was surprised to dig this copper junk ring: That gave us some hope. Turns out we are both pretty hardcore hunters, but stayed together for the most part to shoot the bull, seems we have a lot in common. ð One thing for sure is we both enjoy talking with people. We ran into a lot of nice folks there! Here's the total for me, kinda disappointing we didn't get more jewelry. It was ironic that Jamie was finding mostly pennies, he sure made up for it later. ðĪ 32 coins and the ring. $3.21. we got up higher on the beach later in the day and found a lot more coins. Overall it was a memorable day, a real blast, and I have a true friend. ð I can't thank him enough for inviting me. I'd do it again at a moments' notice.4 points

Yea its kinda disappointing to hit a spot and find that all the high conductors are gone...seems most of the good relic spots I've hunted you really had to work hard for every silver coin we've found....seems someone has always been there before us....But there is always hope...never give up.. like with gold nugget hunting nobody ever gets it all... And anyone who has been successful in this hobby has not accomplished it with a negative defeatist attitude lol. strick4 points

Yep this one just a couple inches deeper. Wasn't expecting that to be in the hole. Hair is not one of my wants ð It's been long since the early 80's. Every time it goes out of style, I just wait it out. In 2010, at my 30th high school reunion, everyone was bald or gray. I'm like who the hell are all these people??? ðĪ4 points

May 25 1937 Part Three I looked closely and estimated each chest to be about five feet in length. The width was around three feet and we dug around the sides to determine the depth. After about an hour we determined the depth to be about two feet on one and close to three feet on the other. I told John I was going to round up everyone and to wait for us before he opened them. It took nearly another half hour to get everyone gathered around the trench. No one could believe their eyes. John and I attempted to lift the smaller of the two but it was real heavy and we were afraid the bottom would fall out so John knocked the lock off with a hammer and chisel. The lid creaked as we pried it open. I couldnât quite make out the contents so I shined the lantern close to the top of the chest. There appeared to be some kind of red and yellow fabric covering the contents. It was old and slightly rotted but John said it was an old flag of some sort. We carefully lifted it out of the chest and there was a second cloth just like the first. We removed that one and our eyes fell upon the contents. Some of the crew started to laugh and some just gasped. John spoke slowly and said this couldnât possibly be happening to a little rag tag crew like us. I just smiled and started to lift out some of the treasure. TO BE CONTINUED ..................3 points

That's Virginia Beach, Virginia's largest city of 450,000. It's on the Atlantic Ocean, about a 2-1/2 hour drive for me. The elderly gentleman we met with a White's detector must have been in his 80s. He had an hour longer drive than me from Fredericksburg. His wife was detecting too! It was an exceptionally calm morning but the surf got up later with the wind. There is a steep drop off so you're really not seeing the surf line in my photo. It's a hot spot for detectorists having so many hotels. The competition is both friendly and fierce. ð3 points

Not only that, 18650's power Tesla cars ð 7,104 18650's in a common Tesla car battery, pretty incredible, and an amazing waste that doing it that way is as good as it gets. That's a lot of tiny little batteries to power a car, seems insane to me. https://evannex.com/blogs/news/understanding-teslas-lithium-ion-batteries You are such an inspiration Joe, it's a shame I'm not much of a beach hunter or you'd be my hero. British Columbia is where I spend most of my time chasing the gold. Great gold rush history in multiple places, and B.C. is known for its nuggety gold. The monster nuggets are up around Atlin, in northern British Columbia, also the site of a long ago gold rush. B.C. is a continuing series of mountain ranges heading east to west across the province, lots of places to get lost in, lots of things still to be discovered, and the vastness of the wilderness places still intact boggles the mind. All the best, and thanks for the link, Lanny3 points

If the display still boots up, its likely a coil failure, check the plug on the coil....unscrew it apart and check for wires being broken or disconnected. If you get any indication that the power is still connected but not sensing metal, its likely the coil. Otherwise, buy a better detector.3 points

IMPORTANT NOTE: AS OF SEPT. 20TH, THE BOOK HAS PRINTING PROBLEMS. I WILL JUMP BACK ON WHEN THEY ARE FIXED. DAVID __________________________________________________ With Steveâs kind permission, Iâm happy to announce that a book I have just completed has just been made available for preorder. Although there is nothing about this forum that implies a book about feature films will be pertinent, because I am an inhabitant of DP, I wanted the people who contribute to this forum to know. âBest Seat in the House, An Assistant Director Behind the Scenes of Feature Filmsâ covers thirty-three years of working on movies starting from the early 70s and winding up in the early 2000s. The book has just been made available today (Aug. 25th), for preorder and will be released on September 19th. https://bit.ly/3wuU34e for paperback https://bit.ly/3KjeIht for hard cover Okay, back to your regularly scheduled gold discussions - and thank you.2 points

I think it all comes down to junk levels, I can walk for 20 minutes on a beach and not find a target at all so using big coils makes sense there, same goes for my other grass locations, target density is the deciding factor, If I was getting multiple targets under the coil I'd prefer smaller coils but in general I can get away with using bigger coils fine with a target every few minutes of swinging and get the extra ground coverage and depth they provide. My default Nox coil for park/beach was the 15x12" and my default CTX coil is the 17x13" for the same places. I certainly understand people with high trash levels using smaller coils, I would be too. After using the 17x13" a lot putting on the 11" feels tiny and you look at the wide open parkland and down at the little 11" coil and it's intimidating ð It's good they're releasing a 15x12" for the Mandible like the Nox but the fact they haven't released the 17x13" size for it has me hoping a new CTX is coming some day with the 17x13" size again.2 points

Try shining a flashlight on it from the side. You may be able to see some faint outlines enough to confirm an ID. Coppers are fun to find and are a good indication you are detecting the right area. I've found hundreds over the years. Rarely will you get one in good condition but they look pretty impressive when you have a pile of them.2 points

Thanks VL, James is right about gold and friendship. I'm both the ugly mug on the right and the shadowy figure at the surf line. ð He was lucky some good looking guy showed up to take his place. Best to shoot into the sun the second time so you don't crack your lens! ðĪĢ2 points

Im sure Minelab will continue to bring new and exciting products to the table, just as they always have in the past. The CTX and Equinox, are still both very capable machines to this day. As technology advances, they will surely get replaced with yet even better products. I believe Minelab has a very bright future ahead.2 points

I respectfully disagree. Remember when people started talking about how the Equinox was the new Minelab flagship detector and SteveH kept telling us it was not? There are things going on at ML that we probably can't even imagine and they seemed to have always liked to have a pecking order for detectors. If you look at the current update to the website's front page, you can see their mindset in action in the list of current models. Notice where the Manticore is placed (it replaced the E-Trac's slot) and also where the Equinox is. I would hazard a guess that the Excalibur II will be the next to be replaced followed by the CTX3030. More interesting things are afoot.2 points
-
I don't know if it makes sense to continue with two product lines with the way the Manticore closed the perceived gap between the Equinox and the CTX. It reminds me of the days when auto manufacturers made similar cars under different brands, like Ford & Mercury. That model was only sustainable for so long before it blew up. We shall see.2 points

If youre chasing big, deep stuff, get your 4500 modded to run with a low frequency and higher energy saturation. Both Woody and Mick can do it (Detectormods and Detectronics). Otherwise, Select normal, Deep and run the gain as high as you can. Fixed GB unless the soil conditions make the detector unstable. Hope that points you in the right direction :-)2 points

Damn, and I had that in a zipper pocket. Thanks for posting a fairly flattering photo of me, looking up stretches my jowls. ðĪĢ And neck. Hope that chain turns out to be solid gold, pretty sure it is, it was heavy enough. You were digging too many pennies, although it looks like I got more anyway ð that was your karma payoff man! Good on ya for thinking "outside the box" as it were. The story behind that broken chain might be a good one. Haven't had that much fun well, in a long while. ð Seriously a great time. BTW it's a tradition to kiss your first coin and relic or jewelry, keeps your immune system hot. ðĪŠ Any time you're in the area I'm game for hunting.2 points

That truck was DEEEEEP. I couldn't believe it was new and that deep. All the rings are 925's, so pretty fresh drops I would think, especially with 3 of them within a couple feet of each other. It's tough competition on this beach, so everyone hunts fast ð I saw a couple of coils swung a bit too high too. Fun in the sun ð I love being the weird guy ð By the time I'm done my hair is a mess and my eyes are red from the wind and my pouches surround me, and then there's that big battery thing and curly cord hanging from that vest....... Yep it's a sight for sure. ð I can't wait to hear about those hunts. There has got to be some good old silver and gold there. Hopefully not hunted hard before. Wish you luck!!!2 points

sohN New ranger at my beach and never returned my call about renewing my pass this year, got in 2 trips there but just junk before Memorial day.......spending more time with mom since covid shut down and moved 4 times since June , not much detecting time lately but now....... That permission I'm after is the local fairgrounds , been in operation for a LONG time. It's even older than me ! Harness racing , carnival rides , livestock exhibitions , girlie shows , car shows and demolition derbies ! Maybe I can actually post a respectable haul before the Nox warranty expires ðĪ And yes , a camper area , I just moved in for the rest of the month ! I wake up before sunrise and will just have to step outside and hit the on button ! ..and there's lots of sand here so it's kinda like the beach.. Stay tuned for further developments.ð―2 points

Guys this may not be what you want to hear, but I think detecting technology wise the Manticore is Minelab's new Flagship detector. I could be wrong, but I don't see them coming out with a new expert range hobby detector anytime in the near future after this one. I just really doubt there is going to be another $2,500-$3000 dollar hobby detector. My guess is the CTX is no longer being manufactured. The units they have in a warehouse somewhere is probably all they have other than spare parts. For those crying over no new CTX or waiting for a new CTX I bet your hearts are going to continue to be broken. The Manticore has been in testers hands for awhile. Maybe some longer than others. There was some guy on Youtube who was talking about a (Beast) of a detector to be released soon. This was June 2021. Most of the list of features match the Manticore's. I would be really surprised if we see another expert level hobby detector from Minelab for awhile. I think any talk of a new $2000.00+ flagship detector in the next two years would be nothing but wishful thinking.2 points
-
Looks like you're all out of luck and it's developed a fault, if it's out of warranty there is little you can do, fortunately it's not an expensive detector to replace. Just make sure your coil is done up tightly but there isn't much else you can do.2 points

May 25 1937 Part One Last night got really cold. I kept hearing branches breaking all around the outside of camp. I got up a few times and shined a light into the trees but saw nothing. We had breakfast and John and I went to work. He took the west side of the rock and I took the east side. The plan was for each of us to dig a trench around the rock and join them making a closed loop. We would go down fifteen feet if need be and then widen the trench from there. We were hoping to find something by the second or third day but there were no guarantees in treasure hunting. Now Will and Hudson were acting as guards along with Sarge and Ben. They watched all directions just outside of camp so we could dig without constantly watching our backs. John and I also had our rifles close by. The morning was cold with a north wind and it felt good to be digging. About three feet down I hit a flat stone and bent over to lift it out of the trench. I brushed away the dirt and saw a Spanish cross carved into it. I showed John. He got excited and said we are on top of it. So we both started digging on my side of the rock. About three feet further down we hit another flat stone and it also had a cross carved into the face. The two of us were now digging as fast as we could. About two feet further down was yet again another flat stone. This one had a cross as well as an X inside a circle carved into the face. John said he thought we were getting close. TO BE CONTINUED .....................2 points

I would also like to have a Vista X type unit @ 8-10 kHz with Concentric coil availability. Deep Tech does listen to their customers & participates in some Forums. Their machines are primarily set up for the European hunter working on ancient sites, looking for small low conductor targets. A selectable frequency machine would be ideal to me, but the Vista X at 16 kHz hits well on anything I have tried so far.2 points
