A good start to the week with a few bits of gold at my usual hunting grounds and an old Queensland Boy Scouts button along Endeavour Creek.. This is my first old looking button.. I know it doesn't compare to a Civil War or Gallipoli button but no one can accuse it of being a modern marvel.. I did first think it was military but then recognized the Boy Scout symbol.. This find was the result of following an impulse to have a looksee in a grassy patch amongst the foreshore scrub.. I also found another silver florin (1943) and two pennies in the same spot..15 points

I don't usually go relic hunting in the late spring to fall, but an opportunity presented itself right outside my house. 12 acres of the farm is up for sale, it hasn't sold in 15 years but the owner decided to get a new agent, clear some of the woods to show the potential water view, and lower the price a bit. He gave me permission to hunt all his land so I have access to everything around me that the farmers don't own, and all that too. The field is the first field outside my house I ever hunted, got a lot of buttons and old relics, some cut pistareens and a half cent. In the back of this field they cut a path through the jungle to the river, there is a marsh at the end. The hill doesn't look steep but the angle is around 70 degrees or more. The realtor put a guide rope on the trees. Yesterday I updated all my Deus 2 gear to V1, what a coincidence 😏 I decided to pack up my WS6 Master rig with the 9" coil and went over there on my golf cart to take advantage of hunting it before the jungle takes it back. It will be impassable by fall. It was only a 3 hour hunt, that ravine is a killer 😅 hunting on what is the equivalent angle of a 12-12 pitch roof is difficult, the ground is full of roots, and it's deer fly season so they are everywhere. 🤬 Here's the trash, I didn't get much, dug the nails to prove to myself iron was iron, and some were in the same hole as my finds. I was using Relic Reaper and messing with some of the new features. One thing I noticed was no "Profile" option, it may have never existed but I am not a fan of the large number screen. I also want to put Silver Slayer on this machine now that there are a couple notches available, and a beach program from a forum user I want to try. First good find was a button, a 75 that ended up being under a root. Very crisp signal, gotta say V1 is an improvement. It had no backmarks and part of the shank crumbled away. I got to about 10 feet from the top and got a solid 58. Most of the buck balls were 57-63 depending on size, but this just sounded different. Out popped the surprise of the day: A gold watch fob, i believe it's Victorian era from my search, 1837-1901. It could even be from the 20s. The initials of the owner are in the bottom plate: The cleaner it gets the "golderer" it gets, nothing flaking off. It doesn't weigh a lot and appears to be hollow. My guess is 10k Gold Filled, like the one I found doing research below: It's pretty similar. Gold is gold tho... 🥳 Cannot believe the Deus 2 hit gold already! The initials are those of the owner of the whole farm a long time ago, I may give it to the family. 🙂14 points

I took a minute to update @Brad Plohman's awesome D2 Program log to make it V1.0 friendly. The new features are added and you might want to punch in your custom user programs before you update. It will make life a little easier. 😏 Enjoy! DEUS II FACTORY and USER PROGRAMS-V1.0.xlsx.zip11 points

This is a semi in the ground test on a 0.1 gram gold nugget for anyone that would like to use one of the "do it all" simultaneous multi frequency VLFs for gold prospecting. For the "fairness" police, please don't complain about coil sizes. The smallest coil available for Deus 2 is the 9" coil. So blame XP not me. XP include a simultaneous multi frequency "Gold Prospecting" mode on Deus 2. I would like to use it. This video shows why currently I will not use it. Video starts with checking the test area ground for targets, ground balancing, showing the target and how it is placed in the ground and then the test begins. Deus 2 uses customized FMF Goldfield and customized single frequency Mono program both with sensitivity on 95. I wanted to use the Hi Square audio, Pitch tones and the absolute zero discrimination for both programs along with a slight threshold. That is why I did not use stock default programs. All settings are as identical as I can make them except for the new Audio Filter feature which is on setting 1 for FMF Goldfield custom program 16 and it is on 0 for 40 kHz Mono custom program 15 which was an oversight failure on my part. I did retry it after making the video with FMF Goldfield custom program having Audio filter on 0. It made zero difference. Legend starts at 3:25 of the video. It uses its 6" coil with sensitivity on 23 in Gold Multi and Gold 40 kHz. Equinox 900 starts at 6:00 of the video. It uses its 6" coil with sensitivity on 23 in Gold 1 Multi and Gold 1 40 kHz. All settings are clearly shown in the video for each program being used on each detector. The ruler sticking up out of the ground behind the target is 5 cm high and the target itself is 2" deep or roughly another 5 cm deep. Legend and Equinox in the Gold Multi modes can hit this target 5 cm above the ground. They can hit it at 4 cm above the ground using single frequency 40 kHz. Deus 2 using its 40 kHz Mono program also hit this target at 4 cm above the ground. We could debate about whether Deus 2 in FMF Goldfield is actually hitting the target even with the coil bumping into the target holder. Deus 2's mineralization meter is between half and 3/4th full so moderate to high mineralization which all three detectors struggle with when ground balancing in selectable single frequency 40 kHz. This video is being sent to XP. I sent XP an email and they replied within 24 hours which I really appreciate. Thank You XP!!!!! This is the email exchange between me and XP: HI Jeff Thanks for this feedback. Yes you have right the 40khz of the DEUS II would perform very well if available also in the gold Field Program, as the mono frequencies from the DEUS II are more powerfull than DEUS 1. We will think to make this availabe in the next version. Regards XP TEAM Message : XP, thank you very much for the Deus ll software update version 1.0 and for making it Mac compatible. I am a gold prospector. I use VLF and Pulse Induction detectors. I use a VLF detector for detecting the smallest bits of gold in the 0.5 gram and much smaller size range. I have used Deus 1 and ORX for this. They work very well in their Gold modes. I would like to use Deus 2 for gold prospecting. However, even after updating to version 1.0, Deus 2 FMF Goldfield sensitivity to very small gold nuggets 0.5 gram and smaller down to 0.01 grams is extremely poor. Deus 2 Mono or Fast 40 outperform Deus 2 FMF Goldfield on these types of targets by up to 5cm. One of my test nuggets is 0.08 grams. It can only be detected using FMF Goldfield at 3cm. Fast 40 and Deus 2 Mono will easily detect this same small nugget at 8cm. Being able to use FMF technology in highly mineralized gold prospecting areas would be really beneficial. Unfortunately, for whatever reason, FMF Goldfield's insensitivity on small to very small bits of easily detectable gold using Deus 2 Mono is still very disappointing.9 points

I did a quick hunt with the new version. I’m quite happy with it so far. Full tones is very reactive and Hi-Square is much more “informative” than the original square. So much to play with9 points

Nothing all that spectacular here just some more of the stuff that often turns up at these early western sites that unlike the gold camps were inhabited by folks that did not have a whole lot of money. Mostly I just wanted to show another piece of millitaria that was found that I am not completely sure about.I'm thinking that it was either a very large two piece general service type coat button missing its back portion or perhaps part of a stamped two piece buckle although there is no signs of it being attached to a frame. I have had to resort to using primairily the deus 1 with the elliptical coil due to the unbelievable density of the weeds and native grasses which are the direct result of the very wet winter.Relic site detecting in my area is going to be real tough until the fall die off. A few eyeballed items Some of the more interesting trash.6 points

Yep disappointing as I was hoping for a "mono" gold field process program (similar to Deus 1) not just the mod that allows you to adjust the top end FMF frequency, but at least there is now adjustability there which an interesting addition. There are also now a number of other audio enhancements (e.g., new audio filter, enhanced square wave audio, threshold with pitch, and new enhancements to full tones setups) that supposedly improve detection of weak signals, so some additional testing is warranted. But the head-to-head testing Jeff did with Mono vs. Gold Field, is telling us that there is probably still work to do. Jeff, note that on Gold Field (which is already at 40 khz max) and Relic (default 24 but now can be adjusted up to 40 khz or down to 14 khz) should be tested. I note that in the program descriptions, Gold Field utilizes frequency addition while Relic utilizes conductive soil subtraction (though not sure if this is simply tied to the FMF MAX Frequency selection) so there may be a slight difference in the way Gold Field and Relic process targets even with the same Max FMF frequency. Suggest giving Relic a go with 40 khz to see how it behaves. With Relic you have hot ground handling similar to Gold Field. Worth a shot. Also suggest fiddling with the new audio options including the audio filter and enhanced Square. Also going to try Sensitive Full Tones and Beach Sensitive with Pitch which are both set up for micro targets. If Pitch is used, threshold can be utilized as well. At the end of the day, we may need "mono" gold field, a maximum FMF frequency higher than 40 khz or a maximum mono frequency higher than 45 khz (60 or 80 khz preferrably) and that small elliptical coil we have been asking for. Simon, just wanted to point out a nuanced point. Specifically that Jeff is not saying that Deus 2 does not have sub gram gold detection capability. Deus 2 in mono frequency,40 to 45 khz appears to be able to detect Jeff's test targets, it is just that Gold Field is lacking. Jeff needs Gold Field because of its superior mineralized ground handling. You have always stated that you have minimal mineralization issues even in your gold fields. You might be able to rival your Deus 1 prospecting performance with the Deus 2 in mono. I don't need sub gram gold capability so I don't have a feel for how Deus 2 Mono performs vs. Deus 1 Gold Field, in that capacity so maybe Jeff can provide that perspective (I'm sure he has addressed it in his past testing). The thing is, I am not sure even Deus 1 can rival Equinox 800 on sub gram gold anyway, so it might be a moot point. You had indicated interest in Deus 2 because of the reports of rock solid Target IDs at depth, you might still want to consider Deus 2 down the road. They definitely did some things to improve target audio and non-ferrous target ID stability in the presence of ferrous and its not like it does NOT detect sub-gram gold. Anyway, just wanted to point that out. Chase Takes: I'm updated but I have not had the chance to run Ver 1.0 through its paces or punch in my custom programs. Love what they added but disappointed in what was not added, but hey, we're only at version 1.0 and they sure added a lot. Would have liked to have seen: Mono Frequency Gold Field Process and higher mono frequency selections above 45 khz to address the micro target/sub gram gold limitations that Jeff has identified. Also, I want to point out here that we are talking SUB GRAM gold (and Jeff has been careful to always characterize it that way). No mistake about it, it may not be as sensitive as the Deus 1 and is definitely not as sensitive as the Equinox to sub gram gold but I will tell you, it definitely detects micro gold jewelry and micro mid-conductors. Just wanted to put that out there FWIW. Sometimes people get the mistaken impression it has trouble with gold and/or micro mid-conductors, in general. On Deus 1 you could select normalized or non-normalized TIDs. The spread of TIDs would vary based on the operating frequency used, with the higher operating frequencies pushing and compressing the high conductors at the high end of the scale (i.e., above TID 90). Or you could normalize all TIDs to display consistent with an operating frequency of 18 khz regardless of the operating frequency selected. Ability to adjust TID normalization to a lower reference frequency to provide a greater spread of high conductive TIDs. Right now Deus 2 TIDs are normalized to 18 khz like "ID NORM" on the Deus 1. A lower reference frequency like 12, 8 or 4khz would create more spread on the top end TIDs at the possible expense of more compression on the lower and mid conductivity regions. It's a tradeoff (everything is constrained to a maximum TID 99) but it would be nice to have that option. Maybe in a future update. Separate from the update, a small elliptical coil option would be welcome. Will be taking these new options and features for a spin this week.6 points

Well that was fun! 😅 Updated all my gear to V1, and reprogrammed the Reaper. 😀 I'm sure I'll be adding flexibility later but I'm pleased it went ok. I've reprogrammed the remote, the WS6, two pairs of WSA-II headphones, and got everything back to good including 2 pinpointers which I find were still there after the update along with all my coils. 🤔 It was a bit fiddly and I had to repeat the process a few times but I kicked butt and took names. 😎 I used a crappy BAK laptop with windows 11, so don't say it doesn't work. It does have a USB 3 port tho. Brave Browser to block all the popups and ads. Go by this: "If it ain't black or blue it won't do." Air tested a bunch of rings and stuff and my my my, it seems to hit 'em deeper. More later. 🙂4 points

OMG, this is going to be even better than I could have hoped for! 😱3 points

Dunno if you resolved it but the problem is you have the WS6 in master mode. Turn on the remote first with WS6 off, put remote in pairing searching for Headphones, then do a long press of the WS6 power ("minus") until the remote sees the WS6 and pairs with it, which puts it in slave mode3 points

Wheels and PVC tubing to make a sled are certainly an option too. I am trying to keep it really simple for a couple of reasons though. The first is so that there is less to go wrong out in the field. Second is that the more moving parts means it is more complex to make and everything needs to be metal free. Not impossible but harder. The third is that I will certainly use it here in Victoria on farms, etc, but it is really being purchased to take to the wide opens spaces of Western Australia. Something like Woody's loop could be easily shipped to my brother-in-law in Perth before I fly across there and he can simply have some conveyor belt and ropes organised. The ideas around the sled make up are appreciated but it is more the make up of the coil that is the concept that is outside my boundaries. I have had a generous offer of assistance from a Prospecting Australia member to provide some info around that and will definitely keep you updated re: if I proceed with making the coil myself 😊3 points

I was just about to pack it in tonight and was making a pass through my ring honey hole for the 2nd or 3rd time and this beauty popped up. A LOUD solid 62 on the deus 2. It was 2 or 3 inches down but sounded like a nickel right on the surface. This is the highest ive had gold ring up on the d2 so far. 14k with 10 little tiny diamonds. If i can't find the owner it will make a nice christmas present for my mom who tolerates all of my non stop babble about this hobby! i think this is my 6th or 7th gold ring since february. Inside is stamped "cas" if anyone knows what maker that is...2 points

Jim Stewart had success with the 'Bismark' but sometimes spent a lot of time digging deep rubbish. James Beatty along with John Hider-Smith and Jim dug a piece over 30 ozs using one of those coils. They broke a pick and took until midnight to dig it out. Jim also built a big DD coil, but it had to be swung slowly, making it useless for sledding as the target response was too slow. My sledding experience was nothing to brag about as the best that I achieved was a 6 oz bit. What it did do was to eliminate large areas that could have been productive (but weren't). At least I don't have to lay awake at night thinking about what I could of missed. Mono coils are the go for sledding and having tried different configurations I found that round coils worked best for both coverage and depth. With a grid overlap of 50% very little ground was left undetected.2 points

If you are going to go sledding then you need to spend money. No cheapskate option will cut it. You need a diesel tow vehicle with an alternator cut out switch to keep the coil close behind. ( a 4stroke will send your detector nuts with interference) A diesel causes no EMI. A rigid coil frame attached to heavy duty conveyer belt for rugged or abrasive terrain. (Desert country will shred PVC in no time.) The right detector for the job. (I have found the GPX 4000 the best option) These are just the basics but set up right you will easily pick up targets as small as .22 slugs at several inches. Tested on a real big slug (over 90ozs) at over a meter the detector just roared.2 points

Definitely not a DNS issue. Site is down right now. Though, I was there in the morning, and Yesterday performed a flawless update. They can use OVH, AWS, Azure whatever. When they point A record to single IP - and I don't expect, they have load balancer there - we can be sure, bottleneck is their own infrastructure. It seems they even don't have a proxy there. Site is still down btw. I wouldn't be surprised, if they used standard SQL db to handle everything in real-time, without async queue. Yeah, Apache is serving updater site... If they used static updater, without logging in, they would be fine... Or at least if they did proper performance/load testing. But everyone makes mistakes, hope they will learn something...2 points

Ply would add a lot of weight so I don't really like that idea if you're walking along dragging it, I'd personally make a poly carbonate skid plate to use as a way to mount the coil in it, I'd drill and use cable ties to hold the winding in place where I wanted it and If I never wanted to change it's position I'd put some glue down too, even just hot glue so it can be removed easy enough and I'd attach small round conduit PVC piping to the bottom of the skid plate to drag it around in the front, middle and back, I'd use something like Nylon rivets to hold the poly skid plate onto the PVC pipe, plenty of them. If the PVC pipe ended up too hard to drag little plastic wheels could be added to the ends of it using plastic screws.2 points

Very disappointing. I can confirm that version 1.0 Deus 2 FMF Goldfield is just as insensitive to smaller gold nuggets that weigh less than 0.5 grams as it was before the software update. Deus 2 program 7 Mono and Deus 2 program 14 Fast 40 (based on Deus 2 Mono) are both included in the update and out perform FMF Goldfield by up to 5 centimeters on small sub 0.5 gram nuggets........😪 Those two programs do not have the moderate to high iron mineralized ground handling of XP's FMF tech however.2 points

Are you aiming to cover ground or aiming for depth on patches? Seems to me those large drag coils are mostly for depth on patches and not ground coverage, especially not being towed. But maybe I misunderstand them due to not having used one. I tried a 25" round and gave that up as too large for exploration because it was slower to swing and produced too many spurious signals that caused lots of lost time investigating, and investigating each target was laborious due to coil size. So one even larger seems like it may come with the same problems for covering lots of ground. You probably already know about these NF 30x7" Patch Pros and eliminated them, but here's one if not - swiped this from Rob's site. I haven't tried one my self so take what I say with a hefty grain of salt. If ground coverage is the key and not depth, then more elliptical is better (large swath coverage, but skinny so quicker to locate targets, less EMI per area swath coverage). This one has the area equivalent to a 15" round roughly, so the EMI should be about equal too, and a 15" is ok for exploration IMO. The EMI/spurious signals on coils like 20 or 25" rounds increase quite a lot (especially on uneven ground where the coil is at an angle)...on a big drag coil it seems like you might be chasing ghosts often all day, and that means less ground coverage. Just a guess though, I could be totally wrong. And we definitely have worse EMI issues here so that may just be a big problem for us and not for you. The other consideration is if you are working salt ground then you want to minimize your total coil area too, and in those cases and extreme elliptical shape is the best too since total coil area is small relative to swath coverage. Just another thought to toss out there anyways.2 points

Hey thanks caprock I find those belt adjuster slides fairly often.... June 7 2002 When Vern fired up the pump this morning he had trouble with it holding prime and we ended up messing with it for about an hour. Not the best way to start the day. Jacob was giving us a good going over about getting the day started. He had little patience with equipment it seemed. When we finally got to digging the sun was up over the trees and the heat was coming on strong. We decided to run the trommel for a full day before we pulled the mats. Then Jacob would be doing full time gold cleanups the following day. We have him set up in a nice, shady location near camp for when he starts tomorrow. I will keep an eye on the trommel while I feed it with the steer and when Jim has enough pay dug with the excavator to last the day he will help me with tailings using the blade on the excavator. Vern will be up and down the mountain as pump tender and general mine hand as well as security. We shut down today at dusk after having only a few minor issues with the trommel. We got it overloaded on one occasion due to my overfeeding it. The beast as we call it processed 250 yards of pay gravel. I’ve got some tailings to deal with before we start mining tomorrow morning. I made the mistake of calling our operation work and was instantly corrected by Jacob. He said it’s not work, it’s mining. Point taken. The temperature hit 93 at the digsite. We are all on a learning curve out here and we are loving it. I may never go back to civilized society again. TO BE CONTINUED ..............2 points

I've lacked that confidence in my ability finding gold as it's so much harder than coin and jewellery detecting, it's been a hard thing to overcome and has taken me quite a while, the more I find over time the more that confidence is building, it helped I got my equipment to the level I could not blame my equipment so the only thing left in the equation was me. It probably didn't help the guy I often go detecting with (JW) is some kind of gold freak, I have no idea how he does it, it's extremely rare he goes home empty handed, laser focus on the goal and many years of experience I guess and the guy can dig, all day you hear the chink chink of his pick digging. Great person to learn off that's for sure. When I was running my 4500 and JW his GPZ with X-coils I had an excuse especially as our gold areas are often small deeper gold, once we had the same equipment the excuses were gone, I had to focus and improve. Good videos, I'd watched them previously but it was a good refresher. One of the most important things when looking for gold is confidence, if I go out expecting to find nothing I often do, if I'm full of confidence before arriving I often come home with a grin on my face and a rattle in my bottle.2 points

You might have better luck building a unit that can be mounted to a drone. There are used commercial drone that would handle about 25 pounds, and that should be enough to handle the coils and detector that can send information to your phone. Granted it would not get most targets very deep, but if they were large ones it will show you where to dig.1 point

Although I have the GPX 6000 and it does great on both relics and gold nuggets for me, I think the Axiom is probably a better choice for most people that want to use it for things other than gold nuggets. Not having iron reject doesn't bother me at all on the 6000, it was only good to about 6" on the GPX 4000-5000 anyway. At this last DIV there were quite a few people using the Axiom. I think I saw about 7 different people using them. Below are some of my finds from DIV in April. I found about 3 times the amount of shells frags shown and another fuse.1 point
