The first day that I hunted the old hop pickers camp was back in the late 70's with a Whites Coinmaster. Thats the day that I dug the coat button? missing it's eyelet and the nicest and most interesting Oriental coin that I have ever found.I pounded the place pretty hard for a couple of years with the Whites and later a Garrett Groundhog and found a fair amount of decent stuff. I then moved on and left the place that has been hiding in plain site on the back burner so to speak.Fast forward forty three years later and I thought why not once again try to acquire permission which was granted and see what the Deus 1 and 2 and maybe NOX 800 can sniff out? So far the second identical button and the little pendant have made the effort well worth it.9 points

Health advisory out to stay indoors due to heavy smoke from many fires around the area. I went out and purchased a couple of N95 masks so I could breath safely. I shifted gears a bit today. I pre-screened my gold containing gravel down to 10 mesh, which took me about 1 1/2 hours for 3 x 5 gallon buckets. I then set up my California Mini highbanker, ran it with less angle and less flow due to the 10 mesh feed. It was really relaxing for the next 1 1/2 hours to feed the highbanker. I just sat on a bucket and fed the highbanker. It also took about 30 minutes to feed each bucket. I did 3 clean-ups and was really surprised at how much gold I got. Life is good!7 points

I took a quick, long trip to Rye Patch Sunday and came back Tuesday night. It was good to see the old place but I didn't get any gold. At the end of the day I was using the sun to shine a few crystals and they are a bit hard to find also. I wanted to see the snow covered eastern Sierras before the sun set so I left Rye Patch with some daylight. I was still looking for the shinny reflections. One caught my eye and I debated about stopping. I backed up a hundred feet or so and found the piece in the center of the picture reflecting the light. It looks like glass on the broken surface. Then I saw other pieces that had been broken by other tires and some not broken. They are opaque in natural form with their dull surface. If broken thin enough you can see through it and it gives a gray/blueish tint. It reminds me of Saffordites that I have found in Arizona. Those are smaller but also translucent and we collect those visually by looking for black holes in the desert floor. I guess it is obsidian. I don't think it is natural to the area where I found it and it was probably brought in with the rock to firm up the road bed and keep it from being too sandy. I can't really imagine this obsidian being used to make points and scrapers but I don't really know. It was the most interesting thing I found on my trip. Hi! from Massachusetts. I've been detecting for a while and just came across this site. I'm just retiring and I'm going to be able to enjoy detecting more now that my time is getting freed up. Look forward to engaging in discussions or scuttle butt. My main detectors are an E Trac and an XP Deus.4 points

I was starting to think about how the ability to adjust Max FMF for any Factory Program might affect our ability to better customize Deus II FMF for just about any situation and to better visualize the similarity between base Factory Program capabilities with the additional degree of freedom this new feature proivides. First I had to organize the programs into a specific hierarchy. It is a work in progress but it basically racks out as follows: FMF or Selectable Single Frequency (Under Single we only have Program 7 - Mono) Under FMF there are basically Three Groups Disc Process (e.g., all the non-salt, discrimination programs such as General, Sensitive, Park, Deep HC) IAR Process (i.e., Gold Field and Relic) Disc - Salt Process (i.e., Dive, Beach, and Beach Sensitive) Under 2 of the 3 base processes above you have two categories (Note: Disc - Salt only uses Conductive soil subtraction) Frequency Addition (Disc Example: Sensitive; IAR Example: Gold Field; Disc - Salt Example: None) or Conductive Soil Subtraction (Disc Example: General; IAR Example: Relic; Disc - Salt Example: Diving) Finally, under each of these processes you can select one of 3 Max FMF Frequencies: 14, 24, or 40 In tabular form it looks like this: MAX FMF FREQ (kHz) FAST MULTI-FREQUENCY (FMF) SEL SINGLE FREQ DISC IAR SALT MONO - 7 ADD SUB ADD SUB ADD SUB 14 DEEP HC - 6 X X X N/A DIVING - 10 24 PARK - 5 X X RELIC - 9 N/A BEACH - 11 40 SENSITIVE/FT/FAST - 2, 3, 4 GENERAL - 1 GOLD FIELD - 8 X N/A BEACH SENS - 12 Sorry about the clunky formatting, but just trying to do this fast on the fly. The X's mark areas that are not covered by a default Factory Program. So, for example, you can create a custom Silver Slayer variant that can perhaps deal better with wet soil (conductive soil subtraction) by using General and set MAX FMF to 14. Similarly, per this table it appears that Silver Slayer using FAST with MAX FMF changed to 14 as the base program or using DEEP HC with the same Reactivity Setting as Fast as the base program should behave identically. Similarly, you can perhaps better chase micro targets in wet soil by using Relic with FMF Max set to 40. Or maybe Gold Field set to 24 or 14 might do well better for relic hunting than relic under different soil moisture conditions or different iron pollution levels. Definitely, room for experimentation here. Also, notice, that none of the Dive/Beach programs have a frequency addition counterpart. This makes sense, because the whole point is to subtract out salt soil conductivity. So on dry sand, you might be better off using an inland program (just as is recommended in the Deus 2 User Guide). Finally, another thing to keep in mind, since you can now vary Max FMF Frequency is that battery drain will be mostly dependent on the FMF Max frequency you select, with the lower FMF Max frequencies (not just with Deep HC or Diving) causing higher battery drain. I noticed that the battery drain table in the User Guide was not updated to reflect this. FWIW. Welcome your comments and thoughts on this.4 points

From my point of view, the tests of the New Rutus VERSA went very well,,, ,,as you can see from the video of the VERSA testing with my colleague SAPER... ....First of all, I should say something to my SAPER colleague.... who is a co-designer and chief tester of Rutus company detectors... SAPER is very well-known - the most famous treasure hunter... in Poland... who has found many beautiful treasures among other things... also of great historical importance... Above all, this person knows... what properties a detector should have in order to best meet the requirements for that type of detection, and such a detector should have the ability to find targets... from small fragments of gold and silver coins... .. to deeply buried treasures stored in ceramic containers, in different types of terrain and conditions. And....That's why SAPER prefers a detector that uses real Allmetal and Mix mode....in combination with maximally good 2D and 3D separation of targets in iron...as well as really good depth of detection,,,, this means that the detector it must be really very universal... and it must have the best possible detector for its detection from a technical point of view that fulfills these characteristics....... And maybe that's why for many years he has been working with the owner and chief designer of RUTUS metal detectors.. with Mr. Arkadius Rutyna.. on the development of new detectors... ......Both are active searchers...using a metal detector,,,and Rutus Alter 71, Atrex and also the new VERSA detector models are the result of their cooperation..4 points

Like the title says, what helps you influence your purchase on a new unit? When we just had magazines in print, that was about all you got to see for units available and maybe a few field test. I will look at videos too to hear how a machine sounds etc. But I get my real information from the forums. Before I ask questions I look at what people are finding or complaining about with a unit. If the good outweighs the bad I will then seek out a forum member who i have dealt with and PM them of they happen to have that model some more specific questions. So for example when I was swinging nokta makro units before they merged just about everybody was enjoying them and having a blast. Then the legend hits the scene and people complained about the updates, emi issues, speakers....etc. Now it looks like the updates have finally straightened up and people are happy again. When you swing by the xp forums at the moment the same thing is happening because some are having a hard time getting it updated. This kind of stuff has an impact on my decision making. The good thing about the issues people have is the reality of the particular unit and what to expect of you decide to update or not. So what helps make up some of your minds on units your looking to purchase?3 points

Because of where I live and detect most often, the first things I look for when researching a VLF detector model are: can it effectively detect in moderate to high mineralization and at saltwater beaches with accurate target IDs and plenty of useable depth, will it detect a wide range of target conductivity and size and specifically can it easily hit really small targets like sub 0.5 gram and smaller micro jewelry and gold nuggets, does it have fast recovery speed and good target separation, does it have wireless audio, is it waterproof, is it easy to takedown and backpack and is it over or under 3 lbs. I have cycled through so many VLF detectors to arrive at a few that can do those things that I have lost count of the ones that I have actually tried which can't. The ones I own at the moment: Deus 2, Legend, Equinox 900 and Equinox 800, meet most of those requirements pretty well.3 points

Doesnโt exist and will likely never exist. If I need to cover ALL the bases, I need at last two different types of detectors. A PI and an induction balance VLF. If I were forced to only possess two detectors (not counting a pinpointer) they would be (right now) the Garrett Axiom and the Deus 2 - I would have prospecting, hot dirt relic/coin, salt beach, submerged fresh and saltwater, coin and jewelry shooting, meteorite hunting, contest hunting, hoard hunting all covered. They are able to be broken down such that I could put them both in a backpack and pack them in to a remote area on foot, e bike, or ATV.3 points

I see a lot of significant potential in V1.0. I particularly like the max frequency adjustment capability. I foresee that being useful on the beach. Having said all that, it will take a new round of experimentation on my part to zero in on the settings that suit me and my hunting environment...and that experimentation starts today. I'll post my findings/settings along the way. I'm also looking forward to reports of other's experimentation efforts. Since relic hunting is not my wheelhouse, I'm particularly interested in relic experimentation so I can get a head start on the next trip to Tennessee and my daughter's new property. ๐3 points

The main thing with a drag coil is that it is very useful for covering a large open area that is a "virgin patch" area to see if there is gold in it. Then to find the majority of the gold you have to grid/chain the area with a normal/small coil and then a large hand held coil in the deeper ground as the depth of the smaller coil targets get deeper. Just think how many of your nuggets would of been detected with a 25+ inch coil if you did not know they were there, however very deep larger nuggets would be missed with a small coil. I would of been lucky if I used a very large coil more than 1% of the time. So the best spots to use a drag coil is in large clear non flogged/known locations, I hope this lets you know what you are getting into.3 points

I knew Monte very well From over at Findmall... And he's still everywhere... I can't do a google search for anything detector related... Without one of his post's turning up....โบ๏ธ As far as choosing... budget was a factor... being an old school white's guy... This is new territory... And I definitely want to crawl before you run... being able to get other coils reasonably was a factor... And the Hands On accounts... Recommendations... and answers to Questions of forum members really helped solidify my decision... But it most certainly started and ended with the forum...3 points

Pumping the coil....50/50 found if there was halos or iron close it would grunt..bummer...won't stop experimenting So! Tried these audio settings and radical reduction in pattern (I opened it up to 8, -8 in field) So much iron around this (we found out yesterday it's not virgin, heavily hit last year) 1840s house, pinpointing is quite impossible. Sens set around 22, 23, a bit higher than previously possible. Get a possible target, slowly reduce the swing, turning a full 360 to pinpoint. If I could get a repeatable tone matched with reasonably steady bid for half the circle, I'd dig Had an hour, hit the likely path from back door to privy The silver bracelet, catholic charms... one's stamped 1830. That's how it was in the hole no sht. I brushed off the dirt, but that's how they lay, check the nails, the big one was OVER the center of the cluster. Previous detectorist missed it, vdi was 90s..mixed in all the iron squonks The gilded 1870s naval button ..roofing nails everywhere...vdi mid 40s, but the tones were the huge difference for me today We'll figure this out lads ๐ I do wish they'd run a patch, and speed up the coil release....2 points

June 9 2002 Part Two We removed the sprocket and Jim and I took it along with the chain to a shop in town to see what could be done. The trommel itself was old and had seen a lot of mining in its day. At the machine shop they told us the best thing to do was order a new chain and sprocket as repairing them would not last and weโd be throwing our money away. It would take about a week to ten days to get the sprocket and the chain would come in five business days. So we were shut down. It was late morning when we got back to camp with the bad news. Jacob was still working away at the gold cleanup and we were now reduced to working with the tom again. So we set it up and by the time that was done it was nearly 2:00 PM and it was hot. None of us were in too good of a mood but we started to shovel pay gravel into the tom. At least we had the excavator to do the digging. By dusk we had processed 30 yards of pay gravel and called it a day. We cleaned out the tom and brought it over to Jacobs cleanout station for him to work on tomorrow. He had already finished up the concentrates from the 250 yard run and we were all anxious to see the results. There were 13 ounces of gold in the finish pan. Jacob didnโt like the number 13 much and said it was bad luck. Vern said he was thinking it would have been double that. We just laughed and said gold is gold and cracked open some cold beers as we fired up the cook stove. Jacob brought out a bottle of Bushmills and we all had a couple of shots of the good Irish whisky and chased them with the beers. We all had another round as the hot dogs and beans were cooked up and pretty soon we forgot all about the broken down trommel. TO BE CONTINUED .................2 points

After a few days of research and some preliminary testing, I now have 4 "beta" programs ready to test on the beach. Taking what I've read from XP and this forum from well founded and credible contributors, I did some preliminary testing of various settings. I now have 4 modified programs that I'll take to our saltwater beaches and tweak as necessary until I find the right combination with which I feel confidently comfortable. My 4 "beta" programs are based on: Beach Sensitive, Beach, Diving, and Gold Field. Once tweaked, I'll post my thoughts on each. Keep in mind, those posts may be worth exactly what you paid for them if blindly applied to your specific situation and particular environment. ๐ As I always say, Predetermined settings only gets you in the ball park. It's up to you to pick the best seat. ๐ In summary, I'm very impressed with V1.0's potential, flexibility and enhanced performance. A modified Beach Sensitive, particularly, promises to be a beast for my kind of hunting. More later....2 points

The update of both the remote and WS6 were successful. I typically don't use the WS6 so it was in master and I was trying to pair it with the remote. I think it's paired with the 9" coil which I have sitting here. I also tried taking it out to the garage to get it out of range of everything but no luck. As I said I've rarely used it so it may have nothing to do with the update. I guess at this point I'll wait for it to power down and give it another try before I call XP. Maybe go back to .71 then reinstall 1.0 Thanks for the ideas.2 points
-
Some things to think about or try: Did everything indicate the update completed sat? Did the lock up occur after you disconnected the puck and self restart or on a subsequent power up? Were you just checking that it powered up fine or were you trying to pair with the remote or a coil in Master mode? If attempting pair with the remote, attempt re- pairing by holding down the minus button as suggested above? Is it paired with a coil? If so, is the coil in range (it may be trying to search for the coil to do the shift)? Did you try plugging the puck back into the laptop with the updater loaded to see if that snaps it out of the lockup? Worst case, you might have to wait for the puck battery to be depleted so it can power off reset on its own. Contact XP in the mean time. HTH2 points

I will put some more hours on it this weekend and give Full Tones another look with High Square. I've been using Pitch for so long that anything else just sounds foreign to me. Tim although only recently joined I have followed this forum for a while now and find the info quite helpful. The forums are the closest I get to social media so they do help when considering what products I will purchase. My latest purchase, The Equinox 900 in early December came I think as natural progression from the 800 which I had been using for almost the last 5 yrs. It seemed to address all of the short comings that people complained of. The build quality issue was definitely laid to rest. The expanded Id range which many ask for gave promise to better target Id. IMO it has not. One of my main gripes with the 800 when I first started using was its inability to tell a penny from a dime. I hunt alot of yards and at times would like to be more discreet about what signals I dig. In air tests it Ids fine but in my crazy soil all bets are off and often deeper pennies whether they be Ihps ,wheats or memorials will come in the 90s as does all the silver. This too happened with the 800. And it seems the other current SMF machines on the market have trouble in this area as well. I mean telling a penny from a dime. Without going into too much more detail overall I like the 900 and feel it could use a tweak or two which I believe Minelab is working on. I had preordered a Manticore but when my dealer called the first week of Jan. I passed. The proprietary headphones is a real sticker with me,on the 900 as well, the falsing, and some of the reports I read were not all that impressive. Other than the long noise cancel I think the 900 is just as good as the Manticore. I may give one a try in the future, Undecided. Like you the Legend has my attention. After a dismal rollout and some preliminary issues Nokta has really done a great job on PR and updates and to give the customer what he or she wants. These days you are hard pressed to find any negative posts about it and it seems to have found its place among the SMF machines. Strongly considering one. The D 2 with its latest update seems to have addressed alot of its user's concerns. I had also preordered the D 2 but the vague warranty wording, the uncomfortable backphones, the flimsy shaft and the fact you needed to tether the remote to the shaft to keep from loosing it were all issues that soured me, not to mention charging coils sounded like a real pain. And a way too in depth navigation menu, at least for me anyway,, do you want to hunt or spend all day changing settings or do you want to hunt. And if you forget to save the settings your screwed. You have to start all over the next time. And on that note after adjusting and readjusting how do you know you've got it right. and each site is different. I guess thats fine for the guy who likes to tinker but I would rather spend the time with a machine with a few simple adjustments has me finding stuff. Of the last three this one would be my least likely purchase. Again this is from reports I have read on the forums. One more thing Youtube, although overun with videos these days back in 2016 when I was considering a Deus or an Etrac it did help me decide on which one to purchase. The reports from the forums on both were very impressive but it was a Youtube video that helped me decide. When I heard the tones on the Deus, sounded like a strangled chicken or a bug that needed swatted I knew I would not be happy hunting with that machine. Anyway, my thoughts. Mark2 points

I don't like it when I have to make a video about a detector's deficiency in one or more aspects of detecting. I also don't like waiting months for a software update to possibly make that deficiency better. I am not getting any younger and swinging 3+ lbs detectors is no longer my favorite thing no matter how well they detect. So, I didn't buy a Deus 2 so that it would sit at home when I decide to do some gold prospecting with a VLF. I also didn't include a simultaneous multi frequency program called Gold Field on Deus 2. XP did and they screwed up that program. I have been saying and backing this up with three different videos since I got my hands on one. Other very experienced USA based gold prospectors have said the same. After almost a year and a half of waiting for a software update or at least an answer to my emails to XP, I did finally get a very good response that makes me feel hopeful. XP have acknowledged in writing that there really is a problem with that program. Until it is fixed I won't be using it for gold prospecting. Instead I would pick four different SMF detectors over Deus 2. Two are in the video I linked. Two more were mentioned by Chase. I would also pick an XP Deus 1 or an ORX over Deus 2 for gold prospecting 10 times out of 10 right now since they can use the HF coils. Unfortunately I sold my Deus 1 and ORX in order to but Deus 2. Otherwise, I am extremely happy with my purchase of a Deus 2. I want to be clear. There is nothing subjective or just a matter of opinion about Deus 2's FMF Goldfield being very inferior even to its own Mono program. It's a fact. Some people have said "hey, who cares I mean, I don't use my Deus 2 for gold prospecting......" Well, I care and I am not going to shut up about it until its fixed. If XP can make FMF Goldfield at least as good as its competitors, I might actually finally be able to say that Deus 2 is the best detector I have ever used for where I hunt, the way I hunt and for the targets I hunt. Hope that answers your challenge to name some competitors.2 points

I will have one Friday. I just sold my Legend which I never bonded with at all. I had an Xterra 705 and it was my most productive time of detecting ever. I loved it but sold it to get a Nox. Now my main detector is my Deus 2. i got the XTP as a backup and to keep in my car. Not worried as storage up to 157 Fahrenheit is ok according to Minelab. My car never gets anything close to that- maybe 110 at thee we extreme. Iโm even going wired lightweight headphones with the Xterra bc I donโt want to be having to charge wireless ones and donโt want to buy anything additional- just the $265 main purchase. Erratic IDs donโt worry me at all. Not sure Iโll love the 12x9 coil but it is an ideal all rounder. Previous poster said has square non rotatable coil shaft and was hoping for round to make flat when collapsed, so might have to remove for when back packed. However, it isnโt going to be my main detector and thereโs a lot I like - plus the 705 was a magic wand to me and I think Iโm going to bond to my Xterra pro as well. Iโll let yโall know soon enough. So far this Year getting out to detect has been hard, but that will change now.2 points

Thanks Chase - There's always been detectors that were better than another at one thing or another but the reverse is usually true also. I sure wouldn't trade the Deus II for a Legend because of coil choice and value is somewhat subjective. Less money but heavier is a deal breaker for some I'm sure. I'm still waiting (after 47 years) for that one detector that does it all perfectly. I'll probably croak with the detectors I currently have. Thanks Tom2 points

I do not know if you are aware of it or not but Monte has passed away and has made that great journey to the detecting field in the promise land. I hated to hear that....he could sure tell you his thoughts too on what he preferred and why. But people do influence others to change their minds sometimes. It has happened to me. Just like this legend I have on the way. If you look at the specs and frequencies between the legend and equinox, they are very similar. Same coil size, previous version legend anyway, just about the same frequencies too. I didn't think I would ever get one but after reading so many success stories with forum members on here and the other ones i frequent, who own both the equinox and a legendb, it made me change my mind. So I hoped on the wagon finally as well.2 points

I can only speak for myself and why I use these different audio settings. I primarily hunt in extremely aluminum trashed areas looking for USA coins and jewelry. I use 6 tones. Each type of US coin has its own distinct tone and target ID range that I setup for it. Some trash items and jewelry have the same tones and IDs as these coins. However for example, if I am specifically looking for US nickels and medium sized gold jewelry within a set number of target IDs, I will check and maybe dig every target with that tone and range of IDs. The same goes for medium high and high conductor US clad and silver coins along with silver jewelry. If I hear the tones I set up for those two categories of coins/jewerly, I know to stop and check out or dig that target. 60 tones will do the same thing with practice if one has really good tonal hearing, lots of experience and doesn't mind listening to micro tones. I am a trained musician that rarely strayed from the half step/whole step tone system used mostly in the USA. Listening to micro tones sounds really out of tune to me and gets painful for me when I am detecting in a really trashy area. When targets are spread out more, I do often use 60 tones. Neither one of these two choices 6 or 60 will automatically go deeper than the other. They have some change in the audio volume to let me know that a target is deeper or shallow but there is not much change in the actual pitch of the target tone. Pitch tone is highly modulated 2 tone VCO audio. I use it for getting maximum depth or for detecting really tiny targets or in areas where targets are likely to be heavily masked by iron trash. The ferrous tone and the non-ferrous tone will dramatically change pitch and volume level according to the targetโs size and proximity to the coil, especially the non-ferrous tone. Whenever I am hunting in an area with lots of iron trash, when I'm gold nugget prospecting or when I just want maximum depth, unmasking ability and really only need a 2 tone ferrous versus non ferrous audio indication, I pick a VCO audio like Pitch tones.2 points

I have one since 03/22/3023 and I use it exclusively on the beach... Very good mechanics, the scuare shaft is a success, the coil no rotates during the hunt. The original coil is precise and very light ideal for wading and surf. I have tested it with the original 11' Nox 800 coil and the 15' Coiltek, it works perfectly. But I am doing the learning with the stock coil... Impressed with the battery life, more than 12 hours of search using shoft light on (I have 4 full charges). The stability on the beach is amazing, I think it's above my Nox. The fact that the coil enters and leaves the water is much better solved... The tones are clean and clear, it does not suffer from false signals. It is light and comfortable, you can hunt a lot of time without fatigue. I thought that being 8 kHz it would be good with Silver, I've been wearing 3-4 rings for a couple of nights. ID 72-84. But, it's also good with Gold, three pieces!!!. I don't know how they did it... Like a coinshoter has no rival, our best coin (2โฌ) now goes to id 62-63. Much better than before with the compressed ID's. Pul taps have migrated to 31 and it's easier that way. I've come to hate 12-13 Nox. And if you don't dig it, there's no gold... For me, the extended identification it's better. In dry sand you can use Park 2 on 15 kHz also. Very effective, it reminds me of Gold mode, which I also use in dry sand, more reactive and with metallic audio. And now what I like least: - The bottle caps have gone up with the silver, - From 6 inches deep the ID reader simply does not work (normal in a SF). So far pleasantly surprised and very happy with the X-Terra. Who was going to tell us that it would cost less than โฌ300... Thanks Minelab. ๐2 points

Before I put my foot in my mouth I went done a look see on this detector. Iโd say the price takes me back to the 70โs but the technology is here today. With Minelab dropping detector prices every time you turn around and then come out with one thatโs cheaper than dirt is only great for us the customer. Ok uncle George Iโm waiting on you doing your thing on giving us a report on that there detector . Thanks ahead of time. Chuck2 points

The only way I can connect my headphones is in bone phone mode. Volume at 3. Anything else would blow my ears off. My tones are all different by what I select. But I will compare with the speaker when I get back on the machine.1 point

Just My 2 bits... The most recent purchase I made was the result of a forum thread By Monte... Which led to several YouTube videos... Then back to several forums to learn what I could form other's hands on... and wash... rinse... repeat... I ended up looking at 3 different machines before I Did Not Buy the one I went looking for in the first place... The Hands on Accounts from forum members is what directed me to my purchase... But the YouTube videos were fun too...1 point

Reckoned if I were inclined to travel overseas, Alaska would be the go with meeting Steve icing on that cake.1 point
