  1. US clad coins found during a 3 hour hunt today at a big Denver area park. Most of the “trash” in the area I was hunting at was actually US zinc pennies and various pull tabs. Deus 2 really does well cherry picking US nickels and of course the rest of the modern US coins. Most targets were 3 to 6” deep and were recovered with a screwdriver using coin popping method. Little gold looking earring and part of a watch band are actually .925 silver. I basically gridded a 20 by 60 yard area. I left a lot of zinc pennies in the ground. I got tired of digging them. Deus 2 is just a fantastic modern USA coin hunting detector. thanks for looking

  2. Sometimes you just need to go on a Fun Hunt and today's hunt was fun! The last few years our detecting club president and wife have hosted a Fun (seeded) Hunt and Picnic on their property which has been a farm, a ranch, a uranium mine, a campground with cabins, and a family getaway area. They have a lower field about the size of a football field where they plant the coins and conduct the hunt. I have been using the 11" coil on the D2 for my last few hunts just to get used to it and I must say I really like it. I don't really feel like it's any heavier than the 9" coil I've been swinging since I got the D2, even though I know it is. It seems to perform nearly identical to the 9" but has a little more coverage and I can run it a little hotter. So I took both coils to the Fun Hunt and decided to run the 11" today. It definitely did the job and now I'm thinking that instead of a small elliptical coil, maybe an 11x7" coil might be the hot ticket! Just a thought. 😏 I ended up with 28 silver Rosies, and a 1900 Barber Half Dollar, as well as a couple of Kennedy Half Dollars, a 1948-S Wheat Penny, and a 1910 British Penny. I know it doesn't really count the same as finding those in the wild, but the chances of finding an area here like that is pretty slim, so I'll take them and just call it a Fun Hunt! 😎

  4. Well I found the owners of the lost wedding rings. It was a heck of a journey navigating the internet to a different country, a language barrier, and back to the States. Yes the rings are an expensive designer set as others commented in the original post and the diamond was pretty much flawless. We could not find any inclusions under the scope at the local jewelers. He commented on the quality of the stone. Cha Ching! Here we go! So at first I was able to locate the manufacturer/jeweler from the hallmark in the rings. The original manufactures location was in the emerald district of Bogota, Colombia. I had sent them an email, but received no response. Since I got no response I kept doing searches on the name engraved in the wedding band. Fortunately I found the name on a business website once again in Bogota, Colombia. Ah Ha! Progress! I figured I was doing good now since the name was located in the same town as the manufacturer. Again I sent an email to the business and no response. Well back at it I knew a higher power was saying ‘get these rings back to the owner’. Finally putting two and two together I found accounts on LinkedIn, Instagram, FB with the same name and place of business associated with them. Also said located in central Florida (that was the big clue). Bam finally photos! What slowed the process down now was I do not have accounts with that form of social media, but there was just enough info on the person I was searching on that was available for viewing without an account. Found a picture showing his wedding band that matched the one I had found. Than luckily I found a picture of his wife’s hand showing both the rings I found. Well at that point I knew I had the right people. BTW — DP is my only form of social media. Moving forward the journey was coming to an end I thought. We used my wife’s FB to send a private message to them. Finally a day later the message we sent was replied to, but in Spanish —- I am calling it the curse of the 1715 Fleet 😂 Well the good news is they provided a phone number. A few hiccups but texting via iPhone and the built in translator app worked flawlessly. Heck I didn’t even know that app was in there. No I am not making a pitch for the company, but it did work great in this situation 😆 Did I mention that the iPhone 14 Pro Max 256gb I was using is the one I found brand new in the surf last year. 😜 Fortunately I got to keep that one all legit, but that’s another story. 😀 So with an afternoon of texting back and forth we were able to communicate and come up with a meeting location. This past Saturday morning mission was complete. We met at my custom jeweler who speaks Spanish (thank Miguel/Mike). Rings back in owners hands and they were very happy. They said they took the rings off at the beach and put them in his pocket and then sat down. Told them when going to the beach just leave the jewelry at home, but they were smart for engraving them. Also mentioned usually one tide cycle in less than 6 hrs is all it takes and the jewelry is usually gone for a verrrrrrry long time. Showed them my 1696 Reale and said ‘see it took over 300 years to find this’. The journey finally ends. It took me from a central Florida beach to Bogota, Colombia then back to the Orlando, Florida area via the internet then physically meeting at my local jeweler in less than a week. Someone upstairs wanted this to happen. My reward some people have asked……….Hopefully Good Karma cuz I sure could use a treasure chest full of Royal Escudos 😂 Just happy they got the rings back. Their smiles were priceless. Like I said to some before since surviving my cancer I have a lot of promises to keep with someone upstairs. My real reward is still being here with my family/friends and hopefully for many adventures/years to come. Still hard to believe the below pictures of the sandy rings ended back together with the other matching ring. My wife took a picture of their hands/rings together. Many other pictures of the owners from our meeting, but out of respect for them I will not post. Happy Fathers Day

  5. A funny thing happened at the beach today, I was to meet up with Chase at a local beach, one I now dub the "Beach of Low Expectations". I was detecting the beach cut in front of a motel, and saw a flip-flop, a half empty Corona bottle, and an iPhone. Sure enough the phone worked, and had ID and credit cards in a pocket on the case. I asked a woman nearby if it was hers, and she said no, but she thought it might belong to a woman who was very drunk and noisy on the beach the night before. I took the phone to the motel office and asked if the woman was staying there, and the manager said yes, the people were still checked in. She said I could bring it up to her room, and mentioned they were trouble. I decided to take it myself being the fearless individual I am 😏 Went to the room and knocked, once, twice, finally 5 times when I heard "GODDAMN IT" and someone coming to the door. It was the woman, nearly naked, not sure if she was wearing much at all. I tried not to look at anything but her face, first time someone looked better in their license photo than in person. 😀 I said "You might want this back", and that was all I could get out, she said "Thank you", took it, and closed the door. Yikes. 🤣 I went back out to the beach, Chase had got there, and I dug very little. 😵 .68, a copper arthritis ring (ID'd by my wife), and a bling earring. 🤷‍♂️ That was my Karma for returning someone's life. 🙄 We still had a fun day, the weather was great, and there were lots of nice people out there today. I think we did better than the other detectorists from what they said.

  6. The river is extremely low near the house so I took the kayak out to a place where a bridge used to cross the river but was burnt during the Civil war. I turned up some Civil war bullets both Yankee and Confederate a homemade fishing sinker some iron relics and two handguns! You never know what's in the river I guess.

  7. My last 3 patches have all been below old reef mines. The old timer's surfaced the ground below the reef workings until the ground got to deep then sank holes. I found a few scattered pieces on the surfaced ground and the mullock heaps down further and thought I got most of the gold. Then I tried the left and right edges of the surfaced area. Standing on the bottom of the slope and looking up towards the reef mine at the top, the right hand sides on all 3 surfaced areas were barren of detectable gold but the left sides had a narrow strip of ground running down the slope that the old timer's didn't dig that was full of species. Makes me wonder why they didn't dig a bit further to the left. Were they all right handed diggers? LOL. Here are a few pics with some of the results.

  8. Deus 2’s target IDs are extremely accurate and consistent on modern US coins. My only issue with it is that the IDs change from day to day depending on soil moisture conditions and ground balance even using the exact same program and settings each day. So I carry a few coins with me to test before I start hunting. Today, surface to 6” US nickels were 62/63. Yesterday at a different site they were 60/61. Once I know what the target IDs are for the day, they are rock solid.

  10. Well good on you, F350, but unfortunately some folks just don't deserve your kindness. You took the high road and stayed true to your nature. Your reward will come later. The woman on the other hand will probably stay true to her nature and lose all that again on her beach bender tonight! 😉

  11. Very preliminary results, but I wanted to wait until I had a couple of days to mess around before saying much. Beach mode is still giving me the best most accurate Target ID's on coins in mild park type soils, unsure why but it's almost as stable as the Nox even with the expanded range of ID's so technically I guess you could say more stable. I'm thinking I might just set beach mode as a favourite search mode and assign it to a front softkey and check targets using it to get the better ID's for checking targets and hunt in All Terrain High Conductors seeing I'm primarily after silver. All Terrain modes have improved for me when it comes to ID stability, I seem to need to use Recovery 4 or lower for best results on my deepish coins when it comes to ID accuracy. All in all I'm quite happy, I guess I was spoilt by the Vanquish which for such a cheap detector gives me incredibly good ID's, the smaller ID range helps with that but it's not just that, it's just really accurate in my mild soil on my coins. The Manticore in a way makes up for its less accurate ID's by giving more information, a bit like the CTX in that way although it's my most accurate detector to date along with the extra information. As for gold prospecting sensitivity, I think they possibly have improved small gold performance, it seems in some testing between the Nox 800 and 11" coil and the Manticore and 11" coil performance has evened out, prior to the update the Nox I thought was significantly better, now I can't overly tell the difference. It will be nice to get a smaller coil to give it a better comparison, a shame it's not getting the 6" coil though. It's a great little coil.

  18. The IDs are really accurate aside from having them change a bit. At least they change unilaterally up or down a couple of numbers instead of just one type of conductivity changing randomly. Once I know what they are, they are as accurate as the Equinox 600/800 but with a lot better target ID scale especially in the mid conductor range where the 600/800 only have about 10 target IDs and Deus 2 has 20. Deus 2 has exhibited some minor up averaging on deeper targets but that may have more to do with the mineralization here which Deus 2 handles very well most of the time.

  20. Language Warning - Don’t watch if you prefer your expletives deleted! Interesting video. Normally I might bet on the SDC 2300, but it’s close. Where the tipping point would be is in the extremely aggressive ground cancellation the SDC employs. It is great at eliminating ground and hot rocks, but as a result there are some “holes” in the system that miss some nuggets. Looks like Dave found one of those nuggets. It’s smaller than it appears since it’s a tiny specimen bit, rough and porous. Dave needs a little work on his nugget recovery technique. But in defense the little ones can be challenging at times.

  22. Having dug lots of can slaw with the M-Core I can say with certainty that the TT and sound can help to identify these larger targets...Of course you don't know what you are passing up if you don't dig it but I am able to call out can slaw most of the time...am I fooling myself by sayin that? maybe and maybe not due to the odds that finding can slaw are greater then good targets in most situations... But a small piece of can slaw can TID the same as a gold ring...which is why I dig most non ferrous targets when hunting... strick

  23. I have a few theories why the left hand edges have gold and not the right. 1 - The surfaced area was very rich and the original diggers found less and less gold the further they dug to the left hand side so they abandoned it . Probably. 2 - They started digging on the right hand side for whatever reason. Working right to left across the run of gold , throwing the overburden behind them on the already dug ground . So there could be gold on the right edge covered by overburden that's out of range of my detector. Possibly. 3 - Pure coincidence and the pattern that is emerging is all in my head. Good chance. But I'll always be giving the left hand edge of similar sites a lot more attention. 4 - Most of the diggers were right handed. Unlikely. I think the diggings have been worked twice , 1870's and 1930's going by the dates of coins found . Anyway it was good of them to leave some for me.

  24. While you are fundamentally correct in your assertion regarding TT and target shape correlation, what the man is saying is not necessarily "completely" wrong. While the TT doesn't actually show the shape of a target, the traces can show TID variability that occurs with non-symmetric targets, co-located targets, and seemingly "stable" TIDs can show smears and shapes other than a dot. The traces the man describes may very well align with his real life experience digging can slaw and pull tabs. Do you have actual field experience with the Manticore that contradicts the man's assertions and actual experiences regarding the correlation of his TT plots and target predictions? Also, speaking as a site moderator and from past experience, no real good can come from documenting your interactions with others on another MD site and quoting others who cannot defend themselves here and doing so with minimal context. Even if the individuals and site go unnamed it can put Steve in an awkward position with the principles of the other site - doesn't take much detective work for people to figure out was is going on to have it boomerang back. So while it's worth it to continue to discuss the nuances of Manticore target trace in this thread, let's just take the high road and put a stop to airing your differences of opinion and drama with these unnamed people from your anonymous detecting site, if you don't mind. Thanks for understanding.

  25. Hey, not sure if anyone else has ran across this, but there's is a new Legend tutorial (looks like it's based on the updated model with 1.11) by Detect-Ed Metal Detecting: Unlocking The Nokta Legend [Part 1] Turn On & Go Part 1 is linked to above, and there are two additional segments. I'd have appreciated this one earlier on my Legend experiece, but it still did clarify a few items. Great resource for new Legend swingers!

  27. Hi All, my first post here. Hope this is the appropriate section for this topic. So I'm new to metal detecting. Bought a Minelab X-Terra Pro a week ago. I live on an old farm dating back to the mid-late 1800's or so. Figured I'd learn in my back yard and maybe find something special. Things were going ok, apart from realizing how much iron trash there is on an old farm, but last night after the first rain in a few weeks things went south. Both the X-Terra and my pointer were telling me there were targets everywhere, I mean literally everywhere. Almost lost my mind after a few digs of finding nothing, not even a nail, just red soil...even a handful of it triggered my pointer. Is this a thing? Too high in iron content making my soil nearly impossible to hunt? I'd love to hear anyone's similar experiences and/or tips for success. Here's the first something special I did find during the dry spell. Late 1800's I think? Almost looks as though it went through a fire, which lines up with what history I know of the place.

  35. Dang, Jeff, that's an awesome haul, well done! I guestimated you got close to 200 targets in that hunt, so that's 1 target every minute! That's more than impressive, sir. I carry a nickel and a dime with me to check IDs before I hunt too for the same reasons you mentioned and it works great. 😎

  40. Flat out wore myself out yesterday detecting - Lots of tight grids. Even faded on F350 and Joe D while texting last night. Wife got some of the change and the brand new-ish Jessica Simpson designer sunglasses to wear, so she is styling. They will go with the other new ones she got the other day. I scored 3 rings. 1 junker, 1 18k engagement as well as the 1 18k wedding band kicker. Yes the 2 rings are a set. Someone is probably not happy. Basically the diamond ring rang up 49 on the D2 (beach sens). The better news is after I was done admiring the diamond ring I remembered to double check the hole. Guess what another 49 on D2 😊 😃 😜 Well the rest is history — the wedding band came out next. Both same size and maker. I cannot not find any inclusions in the diamond with my loops so off to the jeweler this upcoming weekend for the big microscope inspect and hopefully a quick appraisal. Great Day! The gold dance happened! Double check those holes for 18K!

  42. Ned, seems from my experience to be caused by strike and dip of reef, sometimes even going to the extent of appearing to have travelled uphill but not so if you think of the reef weathering taking into account its strike not necessarily following ridge lines. But I must add after years of making 11235634121 theories of why gold is where it is, I surrender and accept the Irish saying "tis where tis", assuming any theories of why sometimes can cost you gold, but sometimes are on the money. Enjoy the fun you are having.

  43. Yes, and it’s not fast. You have to scan every square inch and analyze what you are seeing, which will be a lot messier than cherry picked promotional photos. A nail on end will look like a coin. A coin on edge might look like a hairpin or small nail. I doubt there is enough resolution to see a hole in a pull tab or washer. If you can’t hear the hole, you won’t see the hole. It’s just mapping the audio to a screen. The downfall will be efficiency. You’ll never get anywhere or cover any ground in a trashy park type scenario. The Invenio is far better suited for archeology oriented site survey type scenarios.

  44. To be perfectly precise, multi-scan geophysical devices can render a buried structure in 3D with relative accuracy, but by no means can render the small objects of our hobby. I mention two examples of an ancient settlement using a cesium magnetometer and a wooden boat with the georadar method.

  45. Never used the Legend, Nox 900, or Manticore. In the water ’d be pulling out my Equinox 800. In general I agree with Gerry though. I’ve done the detect in creek thing, and in water you’d better have a mask and snorkel if you want to try and recover targets from underwater. Trying to do so is really challenging while wading in running water. A sucker gun and pry bar maybe? It’s slow work for a nail or fishing sinker. But I’ve found lots of gold nuggets from the waterline up, and once out of the water my choice of detector would probably be my Axiom. Most drainages have a lot of mixed rocks which often means hot rocks. But if you are in milder places a hot VLF does great. I snagged a lot of gold at waters edge with the Gold Bug 2 in Alaska. My Nox with 6” coil would do well in such locations. Funny you ask actually. I’ll be detecting along a recently flooded creek bed in Montana tomorrow, seeking nuggets on freshly exposed bedrock with the Axiom. Never been to the site before and did not even bother to pack a VLF. I will work hard along the creek, but I’ll be surprised if I put the coil in the water at all. Maybe if I see some exposed bedrock with only and inch or two of water on it. I am far better off putting maximum effort into hitting anything I can find from the waters edge on up. Looking forward to it as always like seeing new ground.

  46. As long as we are using induction balance/pulse induction, the gold and aluminum range overlaps entirely. For every gold VDI there is an aluminum VDI. It then boils down to playing the odds. A particular common pull tab false here for instance, so ignore it. But the fact remains some gold jewelry might overlap that pull tab, so ignoring it forever will eventually mean missed gold. You have to know your targets and play the odds. My advice is focus on quality locations where you dig it all. In low quality locations, some cherry picking may be more appropriate. I can cherry pick rings to some degree based on the solid centered VDI, the roundness. But every pull tab will do that also. It avoids common foil and can slaw, but irregular pendants and gold chains will also be missed. Again, it’s all playing the odds. I can promise the more aggressive you get in trying to not dig aluminum, the more gold you will miss. The Invenio does simply map target signal intensity results as opposed to mapping VDI numbers, so what you are seeing is a visual interpretation based more on what you would hear running a threshold based all metal mode. The louder the signal, the “hotter” the color that gets mapped. Interpretation is required as a deep large faint target will map the same as a shallow smaller target, just as they sound the same to your ear. And in dense surface trash, it’s nothing but a mess. It’s better for distinct targets in cleaner ground. Or mapping large stuff while detuning the machine to smaller stuff.

  47. In general I’m not a fan of calling out other forums or people who are not present. But I also see no evidence that anyone really knows who this person or person is, as not naming names was a proper decision. If they are saying that Target Trace directly maps target shape, that would be incorrect. As is the idea that is can directly tell gold from aluminum. That said, the nuances revealed in the display can aid in determining both. What is being mapped are the target id numbers. Since a round item tends to produce a strong singular target id, the mapping also tends to be solid and round. Ragged irregular targets tend to have sparky target id numbers, and so produce irregular mapped displays. So while it’s incorrect to say shape is being mapped directly, it’s more nuanced than that. The display certainly does aid a knowledgeable operator in making at least some better calls about the target shape. Gold from aluminum? No. But again, it’s not entirely black or white, as an expert jewelry hunter might gain clues from the display. It’s all in nuance and how things are presented and perceived. Without knowing the actual source material it’s impossible to say. But really, does that matter? What does matter is imparting some good information here about what the display does and does not do. I think focusing on the social media presenter is a distraction. Now, if this person can be identified via information presented here then I’d ask that the references that allow that be scrubbed, but for me I have no idea who they are based on anything presented here, and don’t care to know. If anyone thinks differently say so. Seems like a tempest in a teapot really as somebody I’m associating with at the moment is having a deep personal emergency that puts stuff like this in proper perspective. Be nice if everyone can just chill out and move on.

  49. Sorry I did not reply sooner as I was in Nevada chasing rattlesnakes, trying to find a few pieces of gold and being run out of the desert by afternoon thunderstorms. Minelab and most other manufactures usually are not ones to run discounts or freebies on the new detectors. The EQ-900 is one of their most popular sellers. I doubt we'll see any promos on it for quite a while. Are you interested in the EQ-900 for General Use (Coin/Relic/Jewelry) or Gold Nuggets? The pics below are of the 1st piece of gold I recovered in 2023, with the EQ-900. A nice 6 gram specimen.
