  1. I headed back to the old school yard this afternoon where I had found 8 silvers there on two trips this year before today. I got 4 more bringing my total there to 12. This was my first hunt with the Manticore update. This ground is really mild. Not a lot of surface trash, and while you here a lot of iron grunts it's not much of a nuisance. As far as the update goes from what I could tell the detector seemed more stable. For whatever reason I had to check less falsing iron. I did not have the Stabilizer turned on. I run a pretty simple setup. Ferrous limits 8 high, 3 low. 5 tones with the bins setup to be louder on nickels and silver. AT-HC with sensitivity 23-24, and Recovery on 4. The ground was pretty dry so I tried to limit my digging. I dug no nickel signals. I only dug one Wheat cent because it was right next to one of the Mercs. I posted some photos of the quarter depths, but the Merc without the hole in it was about as deep. These were no brainer solid dig me tones and I.D.'s Silver in this mild ground rings higher. Even the worn almost slick Barber quarter rang up 88-90. The Washington rang up 90-92. I'm pretty sure there is more there. These deep signals have a rather tight field of detection, and quite enough you just about need to swing right over them to avoid passing them up. So after today I'm up to 32 silver coins for the year. All with the Manticore.

  2. I make a brief appearance in this weeks episode. If it makes you feel any better I don’t find anything. I’ll be in an episode of the Hoffman show at Nome sometime soon where I do find a lot of gold. Just finished another bit piece with Freddy outside of Missoula last week for next season. Freddy has actually mined more gold than most of us will ever dream of. His show is probably one of the more real of the reality shows, and he is genuinely helping out miners mine more gold. But it’s TV and they have to play to the audience also. For me it’s just been a lot of fun, all the cast and crew of both shows were super nice to me. I don’t make any money doing these. It’s more like little short paid vacations to places I’ve never been and hanging out with interesting people. The funny part was my telling the Hoffmans and Freddy I don’t watch shows of any sort really, theirs included. I’ve not actually watched this one either and only found out it was on because somebody said they saw it. 3. I haven't used the DD harness, love their detector covers though, great quality. I hate harnesses and rubbish on my body so recently I bought a proper Chinese version of a detector harness. Link to harness on Aliexpress It was really cheap and works a treat, seems good quality. Quick release for detectors and you don't overly notice it on your body which is the thing I hate, the Minelab harness makes me feel like some sort of cyborg especially the GPZ one with the plastic supports. I rarely use one, in fact virutally never as I hate them on me but I will give this one a good workout when I use some bigger coils on my GPZ or the 14x9" on the GPX 6000 as it's annoying heavy on a light detector.

  4. Had a couple hours to get out last Friday with manticore, was running beach deep sens 24 recovery speed 4. Ring is 8.6 grams of 20k tested on xrf gun id was 52-53. Bracelet was gold filled. Ring was about 10-12” deep on towel line and gave a great clear signal. Loving the manti. Thanks John

  5. I think it's really cool you're in these shows Steve, I like the shows, they're entertaining, they don't have to be 100% real to be worth watching and in fact if they were they'd likely be a lot less popular as they're be quite boring. No show would want to follow me on a days gold detecting digging thousands of pellets to find a few crumbs 🙂 They're entertainment, not a documentary. Some happy snaps from the episodes They didn't like your shirt obviously and blurred it out, but were happy to keep the AT Gold hat on display 🙂 It's good to see Garrett getting on these TV shows, Aussie Gold Hunters is all about Minelab marketing, Garrett got their foot in the door once with the ATX when the Gold Gypsies dropped their Minelabs and used them for one season but it caused a bit of a ruckus. Now the Axiom is out it would have been a better time to do it. It's funny they call Steve a gold detector, but in a way I guess you could say he is 🙂 Cool detecting area, I'd be having a ball there. Just a 22 shell! I'll keep an eye out of Hoffmans, It's only up to episode 2 but no sign of you yet.

  6. I have the Legend and think it's great but I still use my Anfibio Multi, often with the Concentric coils.

  7. well im doing something different i chose the multi kruzer over the legend it works better for me in my az ground & the concentric coil works great

  8. My friend JW now also has a 12x7", I haven't used mine yet too busy skiing to go detecting however he took his for its maiden voyage yesterday and found these little specs He's got some sort of super hearing though and can find nuggets I can't. So hopefully mine works as well for me as his is for him, and clearly yours is for you Dutchman. I don't know the weights, I don't think he has accurate enough scales for these little bits.

  9. My buddy and I hit a river today. Sampling gravel indicated maybe 5 specs. The vegetation roots faired much better, so I spent the day only washing roots. Such a simple process too. Just put a chunk of roots with sand and gravel in your hopper, and let the water break it up. I got some great fossils, a ring, and other goodies using my metal detector. I faired OK with the gold too, considering it was not the North Saskatchewan River. "ROOTS ROCK."🍀🍀🍀🍀 (lots of pics)

  10. As much as the 6000 cost, shouldn't you have to use bathroom scales to weigh the gold.

  12. I've been keeping an eye on the Lira for a while now, the Turkish currency and it's just been on a massive fall against most currencies, in fact it's fallen 65% in the past 2 years against the USD, 20% in the past month alone. The Turkish economy is obviously a basket case causing this with insane inflation with the annual inflation rate at 40%, makes us feel kinda silly complaining about our mid single figure inflation rates. And if you thought your interest rates were bad in Turkey they've just doubled from 8.5% to 15% in the past couple of days and they're needing to go up a lot more yet with forecasts of 25% by the end of the year. This it the past 2 years of the Lira, look at it tracking right down vs the USD. And the last month alone, look at the dive at the end. The annual inflation rate reached 85 per cent late last year and the central bank burned through most of its reserves trying to prop up the Lira, down 90 per cent against the USD over the past 10 years. So what does this mean for Nokta's pricing? All those US buyers paying their 500 or 600 USD or whatever the Legend currently costs is a whole lot of Liras, much more than it was even a month ago, so does this mean Nokta can further reduce prices blowing the competition out of the water? Possibly. We can only wait and see.
    2 points
  13. I too am not an economist but there may be an impediment to price reductions by Nokta. Anything that is sourced and made in Turkey or local labour would be cheaper as their currency falls. On the other hand any components that originate out of country will cost Nokta more in Lira. However that too may be somewhat offset by selling them and receiving payment in foreign currency such as USD. Definitely an interesting topic for discussion.

  15. My compliments to the posters for showing how to answer questions without getting political. The secret is simple. Discuss what is. That's it. Not why. Some people people love to argue over the whys of things and assign blame. Here, I want to concentrate on what unites us, not what divides us, and solving problems for each other is a great place for that to happen. Please nobody respond to this. It is just that when I saw the post topic, California and rules, and I cringed "here we go again." Instead, I'll enjoy my morning coffee. Compliments to the posters. Thank you very much!! But again, let's not let my post become a subject of discussion. Thanks.

  16. I HEAR you! Went on a three-week binge to learn the D2 this winter, after using it on and off for months. What surprised me the most is when I went back to the Equinox. I realized how simple and good it was. All around, from depth, target ID and, ease of use to run AT PEAK PERFORMANCE! It was nice to give that chirpy mother-in-law D2 a rest.

  17. Currently running the Nox 600 for last 5 years (owned plenty of machines prior like cz21/excal/ctx/dual field) and my oldest son now 12 wants to start going with me. So I am getting a new machine and giving him my 600. I only hunt salt beaches, clean areas, low emi, US east coast - North carolina. I'm comparing the Nox 700 and Legend. I am very familiar with the equinox line up. I guess my question is, how does the legend compare? On paper, it looks amazing. Better price and more features! My big wants are depth and gold on the beach. My biggest complaint with my 600 (and CTX) were the tones - The idea that the nox now has a dP tone and Legend as a Tone pitch are exciting, it will be more similar to my old CZ21 and Excal. Anyone used either of these? Anyone compared the depth and how they react to gold? Im not really interested in the 900, manticore, deus, older machines, etc. I am really just looking at these two. Thanks all!

  18. Legend is a good choice if you do any salt water hunting or water hunting for that mater. My Kruzer sprung a leak, I was able to repair the machine, replaced the internal battery but it leaked again. Turned out to be on the front panel where the keypad rubber meets the acrylic face. Something to be aware of. I believe the Legend housing is bit more refined and haven't heard of any leaks on that. I still use my MK but just on land for coin shooting for the most part. One note though, if your Kruzer or Anfibio battery seems to run out faster than it did when new make sure the thermal sensor is on tight against the battery. I had to wipe down the outside of the battery housing with IPA until it wasn't greasy and put the sensor on and secured it with clear packing tape.

  20. I know on some detectors, a coil can make a world of difference in how it performs. A perfect example...Whites MXT. It came with that 950 concentric coil and I couldn't for the life of me figure out why people liked that machine. I couldn't get any depth at all with it. When I revisited it several years later with a SEF 10x12 DD on it...wow...totally different machine and it became one of my favorites. However...Minelab machines really haven't been that way for me. From the CTX to Equinox, I never noticed a performance change by going to a bigger coil, nor much of a separation advantage by going to the smaller ones. The weight/balance was all that I've ever noticed with them. I am kinda wondering if the Manticore coils won't be the same way. I hate dumping $300 into a coil that all I can really say about it is....it made it a little lighter or heavier.

  22. Although I basicaly agree, it probably wouldn't be multifrequency-ready. So it would be sort of emergency solution, until new HF coil is released. There also can be a new version of communication protocol between coil and remote, that is not backwards compatible. If so, they would have to implement communication with older coils separately -> more bugs, delays. Another thing, that we don't know - hardware transmitter/receiver can be incompatible too. So they would have to add second receiver to RC? If so, it doesn't make sense either. Old HF coils had quite a lot of issues with batteries. I would rather have new, optimised coils with improved reliability, than making everything compatible with old tech...

  24. Yep,I hate them with a vengeance.Just getting into and out of one does my head in !! But,my hands are wrecked from manual labour, and can't grip very well anymore.I'm only about 60 and still strong as an ox but that doesn't help when your vise like grip only lasts for 1/2 hour or so.I tried an old minelab harness today ,and after an hour of setting up at home,it lasted 50 metres and was chucked on the ground in disgust,I was good for an hour or so after that and I could battle on for the day,but surely life can get a bit easier ??.That was only with a 14 x 9 on my ctx,but I guess that's fairly large and I might have to have a reality check lol. thanks jay.

  25. Health and life has turned me into a dabbler at most so infrequent is a understatement I feel the same way until i get with the plan, ground balance is a must for some areas i go but noise canceling is a must do and do often plus lowering sensitivity will still get good depth. Iron infested ground i just lower iron volume as i like to hear what's going on. If you turn iron off you have a super quiet above average detector but your not playing with a full deck

  28. Is it impossible for people to think the SDC timings have a hole? Denial is a river in Egypt. No detector is perfect. The Axiom for sure, but that goes for the SDC also. But I’ll repeat for the “nothing can ever do anything better than anything made by Minelab” crowd - the 2300 is a great detector and anyone that has one and is happy with it has absolutely no need to trade it for the Axiom.

    1 point
  33. Shocking cost I feel. They are trying to cream everyone with a Manticore. Makes the Nox 800 and 900 a great buy. Bearing in mind that I do not believe in the grand scheme of things you are really getting that much of an overall performance upgrade Apart from the bells and whistles and in the majority of cases how much we miss in the wild is anyones guess. I think find rates with new machines increase as everyone digs all signals just to investigate what lays beneath. The Manticore on the beach yes noticeable improvement and afew good finds will pay for your coil.

  35. The whole point of my poorly articulated Post was to point out that todays high end detectors like the Legend give us a lot of information about what is under the coil. We/I just need to be able to understand & apply this info. If you know a cleanly Disc'd target will not give a TID, then you know that crappy sounding iffy target that throws up a mid range TID & one way high tone is worth investigating. Virgin sites with easy targets are rare. Most sites only have masked/iffy targets left. Some of these are real keepers if we know the clues to dig them. You also need to know how best to approach a site that has Al trash vs old nails vs higher mineralization. Conditions rule proper detector setup. It is a lot to keep up with & manage.

  36. My go to for Al trash is 4 kHz because it is the least sensitive to the Al trash. 🙃

  37. To me the Manticore learning curve reminds me of when I first used the explorer years ago, I feel you gotta put in the time understanding what the machine is doing. I almost gave up on the explorer back then but forced myself to learn its language and I’m glad I did. The manticore reminds me of that time and the more I run the manticore the more I’m learning it’s language. To me it’s like a super fast, deeper and more sensitive explorer in a way. Once it all clicks you can’t put it down you want to get out swinging. Can’t wait for the accessory coils to be available. Thanks John

  38. Well I found the owners of the lost wedding rings. It was a heck of a journey navigating the internet to a different country, a language barrier, and back to the States. Yes the rings are an expensive designer set as others commented in the original post and the diamond was pretty much flawless. We could not find any inclusions under the scope at the local jewelers. He commented on the quality of the stone. Cha Ching! Here we go! So at first I was able to locate the manufacturer/jeweler from the hallmark in the rings. The original manufactures location was in the emerald district of Bogota, Colombia. I had sent them an email, but received no response. Since I got no response I kept doing searches on the name engraved in the wedding band. Fortunately I found the name on a business website once again in Bogota, Colombia. Ah Ha! Progress! I figured I was doing good now since the name was located in the same town as the manufacturer. Again I sent an email to the business and no response. Well back at it I knew a higher power was saying ‘get these rings back to the owner’. Finally putting two and two together I found accounts on LinkedIn, Instagram, FB with the same name and place of business associated with them. Also said located in central Florida (that was the big clue). Bam finally photos! What slowed the process down now was I do not have accounts with that form of social media, but there was just enough info on the person I was searching on that was available for viewing without an account. Found a picture showing his wedding band that matched the one I had found. Than luckily I found a picture of his wife’s hand showing both the rings I found. Well at that point I knew I had the right people. BTW — DP is my only form of social media. Moving forward the journey was coming to an end I thought. We used my wife’s FB to send a private message to them. Finally a day later the message we sent was replied to, but in Spanish —- I am calling it the curse of the 1715 Fleet 😂 Well the good news is they provided a phone number. A few hiccups but texting via iPhone and the built in translator app worked flawlessly. Heck I didn’t even know that app was in there. No I am not making a pitch for the company, but it did work great in this situation 😆 Did I mention that the iPhone 14 Pro Max 256gb I was using is the one I found brand new in the surf last year. 😜 Fortunately I got to keep that one all legit, but that’s another story. 😀 So with an afternoon of texting back and forth we were able to communicate and come up with a meeting location. This past Saturday morning mission was complete. We met at my custom jeweler who speaks Spanish (thank Miguel/Mike). Rings back in owners hands and they were very happy. They said they took the rings off at the beach and put them in his pocket and then sat down. Told them when going to the beach just leave the jewelry at home, but they were smart for engraving them. Also mentioned usually one tide cycle in less than 6 hrs is all it takes and the jewelry is usually gone for a verrrrrrry long time. Showed them my 1696 Reale and said ‘see it took over 300 years to find this’. The journey finally ends. It took me from a central Florida beach to Bogota, Colombia then back to the Orlando, Florida area via the internet then physically meeting at my local jeweler in less than a week. Someone upstairs wanted this to happen. My reward some people have asked……….Hopefully Good Karma cuz I sure could use a treasure chest full of Royal Escudos 😂 Just happy they got the rings back. Their smiles were priceless. Like I said to some before since surviving my cancer I have a lot of promises to keep with someone upstairs. My real reward is still being here with my family/friends and hopefully for many adventures/years to come. Still hard to believe the below pictures of the sandy rings ended back together with the other matching ring. My wife took a picture of their hands/rings together. Many other pictures of the owners from our meeting, but out of respect for them I will not post. Happy Fathers Day

  39. Thank you for the explanation. Aluminum (be it caps, pull tabs, foil, or slaw), always has, and always will be, the bane of my jewelry hunter existence. I know I'm not alone on that 😉. That bane is not only due to the massive amount and variety of aluminum in the ground, but also the fact that it usually gives perfect tones, and rock solid single IDs. About the only type of aluminum that can be avoided when jewelry hunting is large can slaw that isn't too deep. Reason being, it will produce a booming tone, and also produce a long tone in pinpoint mode. Too bad that slaw scenario is rare compared to all the other aluminum trash. So, getting back to slaw or any aluminum for that matter. I see three general identification scenarios: 1) The aluminum trash gives a single ID. TT would show a perfect circle. 2) The aluminum trash has two adjacent ID's (let's say 20 and 21). TT shows an oval. 3) The aluminum trash has separated ID's (let's say 20, 29, and 32. TT shows 3 separated circles. Now the problem is, gold jewelry comes in so many different shapes, sizes, karats, and alloys, that it produces the same identification results as all the various aluminum trash. As such, I fail to see how TT would provide any advantage to a jewelry hunter.

  40. From my perspective, the point of this thread appeared to be more about you mocking others from afar who have misconceptions about the nuances of high end detecting gear without giving them the recourse to defend their position on a level playing field. People are always going to have these misconceptions and will invariably pass them on to others who will either run with that flawed information or do the due diligence research to verify where truth lies. Pointing that out here with your attitude is simply self serving and does nothing to help those who don't understand. Not sure what you were hoping to accomplish here other than grandstanding about how you saved everyone from the horrors of misinformation. It is also indeed painfully apparent you haven't swung a Manticore because you'd know that getting a single TID number is almost more the exception than the rule. Seriously, though, the Manticore and Next Gen Equinox numbers often bounce around on isolated non-ferrous targets at depth. Furthermore, the TT circle is not necessarily less "accurate" than the visual TID number. In some respects it is actually a better, more informed and less filtered version of the processed target signal. Almost a probability density plot of the most likely target IDs resulting from the variables that affect the final processed target ID number on each subsequent swing. So idealizing to the perfect single-digit target signal is actually not reflective of the real world except when there is little doubt as to the nature of a no-brainer shallow or surface target. Finally, I am going to extend to you the same courtesy you extended to the anonymous targets of your sarcasm and am locking this thread before you reply. I can see it is just going to devolve into one of "those" threads where you don't know when to put the shovel down while you dig a deeper hole with each reply and people just throw up their hands in frustration. You can take it up with me or Steve offline if you so wish.

Flash a few colours at the 'new chum' and bingo, he has his (or her) money. The number of expensive near new detectors for sale on various web sites tell the real story. Just as in the old days...If you can't make it as a prospector there is always the option of making money selling the tools. Speaking of BS. 43. Simon, Minelab USA goes through spells. Back in the 90's and through most of the 2000's we used to have promos to match the US manufactures. Then a certain person came in shut down dealer promotions, dealer give aways, took away the 3 Day Air shipping and even took away the free hats on big orders. The promotions you have seen the last 6 months could be due to lost market share, drop in stock prices, lack of sales and profits. I can't understand why some countries don't get them though. Who knows, all it takes is a new person in charge with new ideas.

  44. That’s just a personal call. If you’ve been detecting since the 70s then like me you are near the end of your journey, and the detectors you have may be all you ever need. There is no genuine reason to ditch them, as they are unlikely to fail. My DFX is not going anywhere. Or maybe like me you just want to try something new. But it does mean going from being expert with a detector to learning a new tool, and your knowledge and expertise with the old tools does actually matter. I’d not get a new model and expect the finds you are making to change a lot. You’ll just be making them with a different detector. So what is it? Stay with the tried and true, the one you are comfortable with? Or try a new toy? Your call, there is no right or wrong answer. Best of luck to you either way, and welcome to the forum!

  45. I think you are correct. I think the Anfibio was the first joint project that combined features & characteristics of both companies approach, giving the best of both in a refined package. I wonder if the recent corporate name revision is just a formality because Makro has been fully absorbed or if it reflects a divorce of the two companies. I think it is the former. Again, what impresses me is how refined the Legend is, yet retains the high performance of it's sparky ancestors.

  46. Freddy's brother (one of them -- he may have more than one and I think at least one sister) was on the original Gold Rush show a few years back. I think his name is Derrick and he's several years older than Freddy. Their nephew (last name not Dodge, which is why I think he has a sister) was on one of the Gold Rush crews this last season (just ended a couple weeks ago). Freddy grew up near Conifer, Colorado which is near where my sister lives. It's easy to dismiss these shows (including the many treasure searching shows, etc.) as all fiction. However, if you pay attention you can figure out what is real and what is staged, most of the time. Remember, the characters on the show aren't real actors (hope everyone noticed that...). You can tell when they're trying to act (doing a bad job of it) and when not. Freddy is legit as is Juan (a mechanic/fabricator; he's not a miner and doesn't pretend to be). My business partner and I got invited -- expenses paid but otherwise no emuneration -- to a taping of a reality show about 10 years ago as advisers and participants. (He was in one of the scenes; I was happy to stay on the sidelines.) I got a real life look at how these work and it helps with my critical eye today. In another thread I started recently I was hoping some dredgers here had watched enough of Gold Rush Whitewater spinoff to critique it objectively, but apparently not.

Old Dave show the money is not in the gold mining but in mining the viewers of the show. Poor Dave gets his pantyhose in a knot and he gets mad are starts crying. Think about where is the money coming from to buy all this new equipment. You know it’s not coming from the gold found . Oh well I guess anything is better than nothing but the smoke they blow burns my eyes. Chuck
