  1. Have it how? What format? I will help get it back online.

Here are some ones you will enjoy Fred - from 2005!

Second week of visitors with Fred in attendance, huge forest fires in area, could barely see across valley at times. A shot of visitor tent camp:

Fred with his Eric Foster Goldscan:

Amazing find by Fred, great condition 1909 half dollar, one of a few very nice coins found in our years at Moore Creek:

One of the fantastic 2005 finds, a 6.54 oz "potato" by Dean:

    Second week visitor finds:

    The second week visitors:

And me doing what I enjoyed doing most at Moore Creek. One of the few things I have ever discovered more fun than metal detecting!

  2. I am not sure where your article is Fred. If you have the address you can post the link.

Moore Creek is likely to go down as the number one adventure in my life (outside marriage). Trials and tribulations and an incredibly good time and many great people well met. Like you Fred!

I ran a poll awhile back about activating a photo gallery on the forum. I let it go due to lackluster response. However, on reflection I have a huge archive of photos I would like to share with people, especially the Moore Creek visitors. I always meant to send everyone a CD but never got around to it. Easier now to just put the whole collection online and most the people who visited will eventually find it.

  3. Paul, stay away from big coils for now. Argyle is referring more to the 9" round concentric made by Minelab.

Concentric coils are in my opinion underrated these days. If the detector and ground can handle it I will almost always opt for concentric over DD. In low mineral ground a same size concentric has a depth edge (the blade / cone thing is oversold) and the concentrics identify ferrous trash better, especially bottle caps.

    Search Coil Field Shape http://www.fisherlab.com/hobby/davejohnson/SearchcoilfieldshapeApril2012.pdf

I will toss a vote in for 18.75 kHz for low mineral ground.

  4. Have you contacted your dealer? They should have them any day now.

I must be the only guy on the planet not having any particular issues with my GPZ. I just go use it, it finds gold. I don't expect much difference using the ferrite. JPs suggestions will only reduce salt issues, not eliminate them.

I keep the volume fairly low, swing slow and very evenly to turn the moan/groan of the salt response into its own sort of threshold. Any break turns out to be a target just like a break in the regular threshold. I am not entirely certain I want to eliminate the salt response. JP has really helped me by encouraging me to turn off the tracking in the salt, which is probably detuning my salt/gold response.

  5. The ATX has some touch sensitivity but not all that bad. It is solved by slowing the heck down and keeping the coil under control. Scuff covers also provide a bit of cushioning.

The ATX used to seem heavy until the GPZ came out. Garrett falls to second place in the war on arms!

Personally I think the ATX is underrated. If I could only own one detector it would be a top candidate. I can do pretty much anything with it.

  6. Wow, that was exciting! Just got back coming from east through Elko, Winnemucca, Fernly, etc. thounderstorms and pouring rain, especially from Winnemucca to Reno. At Mill City they had the ramp closed clearing what looked like flash flood debris. Needless to say things are not drying out in Northern Nevada!

ELKO – Flash flood watches remain in effect for most of Nevada, including the Elko area, through this evening.

Significant thunderstorm activity was occurring both north and south of Elko early this afternoon, according to the National Weather Service. Half-inch hail and wind gusts of 40-50 mph were possible.

“A low pressure system moving over the Great Basin will interact with tropical moisture from the remnants of Hurricane Blanca, producing showers and thunderstorms today resulting in areas of heavy rain with localized flash flooding possible,” noted the weather service. “The heavier rain will taper off by this evening.”

Travelers should monitor weather forecasts and take precautions, particularly near creeks, streams, near higher terrain and burn scars, and near normally dry washes.

  7. Not trying to butt in on JP!

My expectation for small coils runs the opposite. Small coils are not more sensitive per se. They see less ground and so the signal (target) to noise (ground) ratio is superior to that of large coils. A small coil should work better with High Yield.

Large coils see more ground and so the longer time constants employed in General and Extra Deep allow big coils to punch deeper on big nuggets without being swamped with ground noise, as would no doubt happen in High Yield.

Again, Eureka Gold comparison. Three frequencies, 60 kHz (High Yield), 20 kHz (General), 6.4 kHz (Extra Deep). If you get the 15" Coiltek coil for the Eureka you will find it is only recommended for the 6.4 kHz setting for all the same reasons. Small coils get the most bang at 60 kHz.

  8. Isn't trying to communicate by typing words fun! In my case while in the road banging out quick replies at a rest stop. None taken nor given JP, I ALWAYS appreciate your presence on the forum, as do many others I am sure.

Sorry to say I just have low odds hopes of finding a nugget over an ounce in any given year so tuning specifically for larger nuggets is pretty much wishful thinking. I think I really score if I get a 1/4 oz nugget!

  9. If I am getting gold I will toss everything possible at the ground. But most ground will see my coil just once, and so where I hunt and with the odds I face I choose High Yield as my default mode. That's all I am saying. Other people have their own choices to make and mine should not influence anyone elses unduly.

  10. Best analogy is the Minelab Eureka Gold. Three frequencies, 60 kHz (High Yield), 20 kHz (General), 6.4 kHz (Extra Deep). You would make similar choices for similar reasons as to which frequency to use. None is better than the other in all ways, it just depends on the situation.

  11. I feel very sorry for your loss. Any family pet truly becomes part of the family and the loss of any family member is just that. They were someone that was always there, now they are gone, and it leaves a hole in your life. Again, my condolences.

  12. Key statements in the following video. High Yield is best on one ounce and smaller nuggets. General is better on nuggets weighing several ounces or more. Quite a gray area in the middle! Bottom line is I hunt in High Yield and I will let the multi ounce nuggets take care of themselves. I am pretty confidant I will hit them anyway. But if I was targeting a more mineralized area specifically looking for deeper, larger nuggets, I would run in general.
