I may not be the best person to answer this question but here are my thoughts: For most, if they can afford it, a PI detector is the recommended machine for nuggetshooting. It will for the most part find deeper gold especially in mineralized ground. However, though some PI machines have a so called discrimination capability it's a bit suspect especially when it comes to gold so most recommend digging it all with a PI machine. A good VLF machine has a more reliable discrimination capability so many who own a PI machine also purchase a second detector (VLF) both as a back up and to work those places where much trash exists and you really don't want to dig it all. A 3030 is a great machine and is great for weeding though iron but generally not the preferred machine as a back up gold detector. It just doesn't have the sensitivity of a dedicated gold detector. Most will use something like a Gold bug variant, a Gold Racer or a Exterra 705. Though there are other's to choose from as well. Hope this helps. Terry

Cool. I would enjoy seeing how it comes out polished. Thanks.

Veterans Outing
Roughwater replied to Sourdough Scott's topic in Gold Panning, Sluicing, Dredging, Drywashing, Etc
Scott, I just wanted to verify something. I just noticed the flyer attachment on your post says the following: GPAA of Northern Nevada Reno would like to invite all Active Duty Veteran's and dependent's on our next gold adventure. So is this outing actually intended for all vets or just active duty vets? Thanks, Terry -
Looking To Buy My First Metal Detector
Roughwater replied to MrCrim's topic in Metal Detector Advice & Comparisons
Not a lot you can get in that price range as to a good gold detecting PI machine. Maybe a used SD 2100 or a whites TDI. I would go a little more and get SDC 2200, A Garret ATX or a Minelab GPX. A SDC looks to be a pretty simple machine, easy to set up, use and is somewhat portable and all terrain. My personal best choice of those would be the Minelab GPX. The VLF Gold machines all would be in your price range and would include the Gold bug models, the White's MXT, the Minelab X Terra, 705 and the Gold Racer and would probably get the most votes at this website. However a PI machine would give you an edge in depth and definitely a big edge as well in mineralized ground. The only negative side to the PI machines is they have unreliable discrimination for the most part so are considered to be a dig it all machine. You will want to take your time deciding and reviewing each machine. Read Steve's Reviews for starters if you haven't already. http://www.detectorprospector.com/gold-prospecting-guides/steve-guide-gold-nugget-detectors.htm#Steves_Picks -
Looks like nice tools for the job.

Are Big Coils Worth It?
Roughwater replied to GB_Amateur's topic in Metal Detector Advice & Comparisons
You know most ground you will be on will likely have been pounded by detectors. Assuming most of the shallower easier to find nuggets will be gone, I have to think either a very large coil or a very sensitive coil would be the better options. A coil to either get you the deeper smaller pieces or the deeper larger pieces. Of course you will want the very large coils to get you the deeper larger nuggets or a very sensitive coil with a detector to get those smaller bits. I'm thinking the 6-8" Minelab or Coiltek round coils, or maybe the new 9-14" Nuggetfinder Evolution, the similar coiltek blitz as well as the Joey or Sadie on or the newer round 11" coiltek mono elite on the smaller end. On the larger end the New 14" coiltek mono elite, the New 17X13 Nuggetfinder Evolution, the 18" coiltek mono elite and the larger mono coils to and beyond the 25" round. I think at least one smaller and one larger dd coil would be a good choice too if you run into tough ground or EMI. Some of the newer higher tech coils suggest promise of being both deep and sensitive so which is why I listed some of them. I have as a back up a Eureka gold and I have several coils including the little 6" coiltek which I hope will give me the sensitivity to find the tiny dinks among the iron. -
just a quick post from Topsail Beach: I find the T-rex a bit large for here. OK for in the water but in the dryer sand a small light shovel would be better. This is a family vacation so haven't been detecting much yet. My finds are below for about an hour of detecting with the 3030. Not much to speak of yet. The thing I really like is not one single piece of iron, not a single bobby pin or or fish hook though I heard hundreds of moanings from such.

Social Psychology Of A Small Coil
Roughwater replied to Ridge Runner's topic in Metal Detecting For Coins & Relics
I remember those days Chuck. Something went wrong somewhere but in most places those days are long gone. It helps a lot if you know them and they know you but some are just very picky with their yards. I think you are on to something though and you have to help them make an excuse to let you carefully dig things up. I'm like you and think if you do get in, be extra, extra careful that first time and if you can get them involved somehow couldn't hurt either. If you give them something from what you find might help also to earn you a return entry as well. -
Chicken, Ak. Tips And Tricks ?
Roughwater replied to Bhsakhunter's topic in Detector Prospector Forum
I think I may have laid an Egg here with that statement. Glad you all read too. But in my defense, look at what Steve is using and not as much with the review. If you don't know what he is using, it's the Gold Racer. Why? Ask him. Just remember, when you find that 1/10th of a grain flake, you only have 4799 to go to get you an ounce of gold. But then again there are many, many more of those flakes out there than there are one ounce nuggets which ups your odds of finding something. Terry -
Got a handle on my T-Rex beach scoop now and heading to the beach tomorrow. Spending a week there at Topsail (pronounced "Topsol" in N Carolina) Beach for a week. Will be using the 3030 at the beach for the first time. My 6 yr old grand daughter will be there so I gotta take her fishing on the pier and detecting for treasure. I may start out training her on my whites pinpointer and let here find the planted treasure. It will all be fun. I picked up a what I thought was a 1"1/2 diameter Ash handle handle for 7.99 at the local hardware store. Guy in the store said it measured 1 7/16 but if he was correct it was slightly too large in diameter to fit the T-Rex which was good as I had an easy time sanding the end down with my little belt sander. The handle feels extremely substantial. I can't imagine breaking it. Terry

Sorry to hear that C-gold. I did a dumb thing a few years back something like that. I was doing some volunteer trail work and there as a large tree down across the trail. It had blew down and had a big ball of dirt and roots above ground. I got my saw pinched trying to cut it and it was nearly though. I was hot and tired and it was probably in the 90's. I have cut a lot of trees in my life and I knew better but I got up on the tree and straddled the cut and jumped up and down. Well I got the tree to break free but it catapulted me up in the air a few feet by one leg. I know It would have been a 10 gymnastics move but it tore a couple ligaments in my knee. One minor ligament completely tore and another partially. I landed on my back and just laid there a while, thankful I didn't land on anything real solid like a rock or part of the tree. I crawled around for a bit and eventually stood up and made it back to my vehicle but was in some pain. I went to see a Ortheo guy and they did a MRI but the MRI cost me so much out of pocket that I never did get any surgery done. I could only imagine how much that would set me back. I walk fine but I used to do a lot of running but I avoid doing that any more since the fall. Terry

Bubonic Plague Found Near Tahoe

Odd thing. How did they catch that flea? Why did they happen think to test it? Where the chipmunks suddenly dying? Just wondering? -
Ok Steve, were making it real simple for you. All you have to do is create a line of clothing including various hats, patches and shirts and I suspect someone will want shorts and maybe some monogrammed socks as well. But seriously, if we expect something to actually happen with this suggestion we need to decide on on thing and then there is no certainty it will but maybe a chance anyway.

No, this is definitely made in the USA. But I know what your talking about and the Chezh guy's design is similar. I have seen his on Ebay.

Thanks Steve, That was kinda Gerry's opinion as well about a big scoop. He has a smaller travel scoop with a two-piece handle as he fly's a lot to his destinations.
-
Thanks Fred, I think? I got the model with the 3/8 holes so at least if it gets in there and is of any size I would hope it would stay there. You are probably right though but this week end and all next week I'll be at the beach so will get to test it out.

I think maybe I should have asked you all what you would recommend for a beach scoop before I purchased one. I looked on line a while and my thinking was the bigger the better. So I bought the 9 1/2 inch T-Rex. It didn't look that big in the picture but when I took it out of the box it was like "wow". Maybe I should have got the 8" model. I see how it got it's name. They told me the 3030 goes deep but I don't think I'll be missing a lot of targets on the first try with this thing but It may take a second person to operate it. Not only is it large but it's incredibly heavy duty. I looked at the welds on it etc and they are perfect. Between that and my big coils I best start working out. Terry

I'll take the 5th on this subject. -
Looks like there is a case to be made for both forms of thought. I like it that my phones drown out the wind, airplanes and that dang rattling sound that messes with my hearing. But seriously, I do like them and because of them blocking noises I can keep my volume down and they have separate volume control for both ears so I can set them at different levels or even turn one off if I want. They also have a limiter to protect my ears which I also like. I'm sure there are times too that I don't want to accidentally announce to the world that I found something. This is an Edit but I am real sure that using headphones will let your batteries last longer especially if using 2 speakers and an amp.
