In my area I refer to early hand stacked walls and tossed tailings that were done in a hurry all done by hand. The tailings were from the 1840's-1870's. Artifacts found dated the area for me..and research also verified the time period. We do have old bucket line dredge piles but they were usually done in the bigger streams and rivers. Those tailings are mostly large cobble piles..and very , very high piles mostly in the area of Snelling , california. You can google earth it and you can see huge monstrous piles that go for miles. Just got back from a 3 hour hunt with my new 8" Detech round dd coil....scored 2 small nuggs and a nice specimen gold/quartz piece. Used disc level 6 on the 4500. The coil goes deep and  runs very quite, in disc...the iron nulls / blanks out very well. Best part with the streams running ..all Detech coils are waterproof so I am liking that a lot..

I agree..location is the number # 1 reason why some get good gold and others not so much. Finding good grounds is more difficult than buying a detector. A detector preferably a PI...will find you more gold in good grounds with persistence. 

With all do respect to all the " I don't use DD Coils Ever," you have never taken up the challenge of detecting California's vast  tailing piles......full of iron bits of trash. After a while you just get burned out on them, that's when you put on a small dd coil and go at it. After a nugget is found, than you clean it up with a mono. So for me, I would say I prefer, a mid size Mono, and a small dd such as a Detech 8"  round or the Commander 10x5 DD.

Well the rains have stopped finally, the trails and primitive roads are drying up making driving even with a 4x4 posible. I purchased a Evo 17x13 and found these in some worked out patches. I was pleasantly surprised how well these Evo coils perform, but do to the size I sold it and bought 2 Detech coils to give a try. One thing I noticed with the Evo coil was that if you're in hotter ground you will be diggin a few more false signals you may not be used to. Second reason I am going with DD coils is that I have some areas with power lines close by which prevented me from hunting do to major EMI. Hopefully the Detech 15 "  spiral wound DD will do the job and allow me to hunt this area. Anyhow the above pieces were all found with the Evo Coil.

Specimens are nice...thats a nice looking one. Interesting reddish/pink color to the quartz or calcite.

Yes for sure...although I dig most targets I have in the past left targets undug when they sounded " iffy." These days I dig every target unless it's an obvious trash signal when discriminating. Although with time I have learned this is not the thing to do and should dig and clear all targets, iron or ferrous. I have found gold right besides iron, gold below iron and within in between iron. I have also found my largest nugget because a friend told me to finish digging the target I gave up on and was about to fill in the hole. Thankfully my friend was there and forced me to dig an extra 6 inches to uncover this awesome piece. Otherwise someone else would have got it eventually. So these days if i run out of time and have a target, I mark it and come back to it....because you just never know what's down there unless you dig it.

Crystalline 17 gram specimen...

Small gold/quartz speci I found a sold a while back. This is what it looked like when I found it at about 12 inches deep. I used pliers and  other tools to mechanically clean it and uncovered the gold within. Surprisingly it came out very nice.

You're always going to find a lazy a-- who ruins it for the rest of us. But generally I have not seen much unfilled holes ..when I do I just do a boot scrub and fill it in. Another Thing that annoys the Hell out of me  is trash left behind. Perhaps the dealers and detector manufacturers should do a better job educating new people in the hobby....dig-it / fill - it or lose it! 

Getting one, let you know of the results in some worked out grounds.
