  1. For me its lots of trash....I can go 3-5 days ..and its trash trash trash..pretty discouraging at times. But experience reminds me...that the gold will ALWAYS show up. Because I use disc. I dig less trash...but always dig the not so sure tones. Just today I got this double bleep signal...loud and close to surface...thought it was trash..but ended up a .96 gram flat long nugget. Total surprise...
  2. Here is my short story..very short. Spent a half day hunting on my own and this day I had no car as it was in the shop. I asked a friend of mine to pick me up around noon...all day I was diggin trash iron mostly and some lead. As noon approached I got another signal deep, dug down about 10 inches and heard my friend approach. I decided to fill in the hole I dug as i figured just another tin can, and started to fill it in with my foot. Friend of mine said, wait, just finish diggin the target...you just never know. Lets just say, I am very grateful for the advice.... to dig it. Its a moment I will never forget....
  3. California highways are cleaned by those CalTrans street sweepers, all you need to do is contact them and have them dump it at your platinum recycling plant..from trash to platinum !!
  4. jrod, I hunt a lot of tailings..I use a DD coil in those areas, like you said..lots of trash. It's not a 100%. Just make sure you only skip the ones that blank out completely. Sometimes the larger closer to surface gold will sound loud and ping as if its blanking like a bounce of different sounds like hi lows or low high loud pings..be careful you dont get lazy like I have and not skip those. The tin is difficult...usually surface tin is a hi signal, deeper tin in low and sound like a good target, got to dig all that. Anyhow, good luck and remember dig all except total blank out is trash. The only other thing I have notices is when I set the disc to 7-8 lead will at times sound like as if there is a blanking to it, starts out as a good signal..and as you get closer , slight blank..dig it. I just got back from hunting more tailings...no gold today, but keep on at it, as the gold will show its face.
  5. ML 4500 with a 15x9 dd detech coil, it sounded off loud as it was pretty shallow, I'd say 4 inches or less.
  6. caprock, Appreciate the i.d. on my find this morning. jrod, thanks !
  7. Thought I would hit it early this morning and go back to a spot I found a nice piece of gold and get me so more . But no luck , four hours scanning tailing piles only produced this, what I think may be either a button or a part of a two piece belt buckle. Anyone have an ideas of what it is or was part of. Pretty sure its mid 1800's navy something.....pretty cool anchor and rope.
  8. Great work fellas......looks like a good spot.
  9. Very nice work.....goes to show you, never worked out. 2.05 per gallon? California...just yesterday went to 3.09 in my area.
  10. Good post..and a reminder to us all.....it ain't easy folks. Like Tortuga....I hunt in the usual spots 75% of the time.....the other 25% I hunt new grounds near the old worked grounds to see if I can find a trail of gold that may lead to the motherlode..... And when i feel strong..I slap on the big coil for those deep nuggets that I may have missed with the smaller coils.
  11. does a small backhoe come with one of these coils? Seriously, I just dug a 3 foot hole and found a shovel, and thats with my gpx and 15x9 coil. I don't see it as a practical coil for the Sierras .... but open , non trashy patches.....hell yeah !!!!
  12. Just took your advice and got Whink, amazing stuff....it cleaned up all the iron and looks like it even removed some quartz on surface exposing much more gold. I left it in for about 12 hours and it did a great job. Used to use CLR, Whink works much better and faster!! Appreciate your help....
  13. I am looking to clean some of my specimens that I have found over the years with hydroflouric acid. Done enough research to know not to mess with this nasty acid. I have been able to locate two mineral preparation labs, one in Colorado Collectors Edge and Voelter Minerals...Texas. I am not comfortable sending them via air mail . If anyone knows of anyone in California who does this type of stuff I think a few of us would use this service if its available.
  14. Great adventure and enjoyed reading your story....
  15. I have fiddled with my Eureka Gold and found that its best to just keep it at 20 khz with the stock elliptical. I was never able to get use to this model so I sold it. Found out that one could buy a much cheaper detector and get better results at nuggethunting rather than pay 1000 bucks for a Eureka. But saying that, this detector in good ground will sniff out the gold almost as good as any other vlf on the market. I did like the null out on the disc mode worked rather well....hope you do well considering you do have an assortment of coils to use on it, I just had the stock coil. Good luck on your golden quest....find some gold and adventure.
  16. Now you have done it..........but in all seriousness we should thank you for your honest opinion. Although I do not yet own a new tech coil, I have been using the older ones, the one that surprised me was the Wallaby coil..... less than quarter gram .19 piece found with it..how much smaller do you want to fiddle with anyways. I think a GPX with a few new tech coils and you are covered for most nuggets in the ground.
  17. The Markets are rigged. I use to work for some interesting people, one a CEO of a major corporation. I asked Mr. ____ if he played the stock market. Mr.____ said to me, " No!, I buy real estate ...." Said when my company is audited, they send in young men who do not know how to ask the right questions....so I don't volunteer any information other than the questions they ask...said books are cooked. The markets are all pyramid schemes .....manipulated by some very smart people who are close to the fire....and they are the ones who benefit most.and are the warmest during the bad times and good times..because they are in the know. So, gold is no different..............Exchange Trade Funds.........and no physical gold or silver. Regardless....gold is pretty high and will continue to cycle over and over again....only when they choose and when it benefits them most.
  18. I use to have a good assortment of coils, but they all went bad....the only one I have at the moment is the Detech 15x9 DD elliptical. Just bought it and found many nuggets with it all ready....paid for itself. Its not new tech, but works just fine. I did buy a 20 inch NF round mono a few years ago, but I don't use it much as its way to big for the grounds I hunt. I did find a few nuggets with it and it has paid for its self, so its not a total lose. I do know that my next coil will be new tech. If anyone is interested in the 20" Mono NF...pm me....I would use the funds to get a more useful coil to use in my area....The Commander coils are very good....11" DD scored me ounces of gold !! IMHO, you have the coils, all you need to do is get a nugget under one of the ones you have.
  19. Sounds like you have it covered, but if the money is burning a hole in your pocket, get a new technology coil. Or buy me that 15" DD Detech......even better !!
  20. Rick, Nice job with the gold and the Rattle... :)
  21. Yup....got that rain too....but its light so far this morning....may get a few hours before it comes down...
  22. Great question and great responses from the forum members....all good points....the only one I have not tried is bringing along a virgin to find a patch.. :) as they are as rare as the gold we search.....Getting discouraged is normal...do you research and go where detectable gold can be found. Confidence will come with success, just don't give up. Most of us have gone for days, weeks and even months not finding gold..and that sucks BIG TIME when your used to finding it on a regular base. But you become confidant in time...knowing the gold will show its face again...like it has before. Take a break in between you hunt, I do every 2 hours or so..just a quick 15 minute sit and drink or snack..gives you time to think about your technique, maybe slow down your sweep and listen to the change of threshold and scrap an inch to see if it is a target. Like LipCa stated....it's all MENTAL....beat the mental game and you have won...just keep on swingin. Good Luck.....your nugget is out waiting for you.
  23. It's there country..we should get our nose out of their business....
