  1. Fred, the msrp of that coil is astronomical for its size. Going to need a deep discount before I spring for it. Paul, you really are a troublemaker. LOL
  2. A lot of knowledge and some interesting opinions shared here. I have 99% decided to go with the CTX. I will just wear a harness when I need to. I would have bought a CTX by now so I have it for my next vacation but I have been real busy at work. Have not made up my mind about the Joey though. $400 to buy a wrong size bolt hole and a kinked cable? Come on Coiltek, aren't you better than that? Danny, to answer your question I currently have; Minelab GPX 4500 Minelab SDC 2300 Whites TDI XP Deus Makro Red Racer Makro Gold Racer Tesoro Silver uMax
  3. I saw on the net that Nenad has used them and was hoping he would chime in with his opinion. l am going out to sea for a couple days so I will check on this thread when I am in port again.
  4. Maybe so Ray but I may never buy another Garrett. I had an Infinium. I was disgusted with the shaft every time I picked it up the quality was so poor. Sold it cheap to somebody so they could love it.
  5. Thanks for the advice gents. I have been watching videos and reading old threads, as I do I just become more and more intrigued with the CTX and the capabilities thereof. I have never been much of a water hunter but I see where it could be in my future and of course just being rain proof is a big plus. I think one of the biggest stumbling blocks for me is the fact that I already have 7 metal detectors. I can justify the purchase of the CTX/other detector to myself as it will fill a niche my Deus and Racers are not the best performers in but really where does the detector/coil collecting insanity end? I live in a RV and I am running out of room. LOL As far as the Coiltek Joey I would have to agree with Steve. From what I have read there is not much performance benefit to the Joey, just better coverage and and a solid bottom. Those two attributes would be enough to weld it the machine for me. Does anyone know if they solved the problem of positive buoyancy on the Joey?
  6. In my travels in the western USA I sometimes find myself in an area that does not lend itself to nugget hunting. If I want to satisfy my itch to metal detect I must go to a park, sidewalk strip, or relic location. I have been hunting with my buddy Strick on occasion and his main machine is a CTX 3030. I am impressed with his finds and the performance of the CTX. I am unimpressed by the weight of this detector. The CTX is the acknowledged king of accurate VID at depth. Is there a machine that weighs less than 3.5 lbs that has nearly commensurate VID capabilities to the CTX that I could purchase for coin and relic hunting? Also any opinions on the Coiltek Joey for the CTX versus the stock 6 inch?
  7. I berate myself. Tell myself quit being such a pussy. Who said it would be easy? etc, etc, etc If your research is solid, persistence is the answer. As Lipca said, it is all mental. Nothing like finding a virgin patch though.
  8. If you are a Gold Racer owner this coil will be a must have item. When will they reach our shores?
  9. That's doing it the old fashioned way. Congrats on your success.
  10. Steve in Idaho posted this recently on another thread- " I also hunt old mine tailing piles and those with sulfides mask the gold, unless it is large pieces. I have used a VLF detector and a PI detector on both types of piles. "
  11. I have purchased 3 Whites detectors previously but when I saw the MX Sport weighed 4.23 LBS and took 8 batteries I failed to pay further attention. I refuse to purchase another VLF unless it weighs 3.5 pounds or less, it is just painful to swing heavy detectors.
  12. Nice gold Fred. Glad to see you made some friends while you were visiting.
  13. Thanks for the astute answers by all respondents. These answers cover a lot of info and I know I will use this advice in the future. John, ditto on using pesky hot rocks to GB to as a last resort. Coil control is important, with the TDI you can many times eliminate GB ON by using good coil control. Chuck, I believe both those locales are placer tailings. Regrettably I never went to either place. Tortuga, you are killing me. Everyone that hunts in the desert has great luck on old drywash piles-except me! Steve, thanks so much for the great tip on sulfides masking gold on hard rock tailings. I did not know that but now I will watch for that occurence. Glenn, agreed that each pile is a new situation maybe different from the last and no one detector covers the myriad of detecting possibilities. Recently I hunted a pile where the gold is so small if you dont have a GBII or Gold Racer you may as well go home. SDC 2300 or mid-khz VLF just will not cut it. Argyle, I could copy and paste your reply and use it as my own (with permission of course). It seems we can use broad generalities in reference to working All types of tailings and the machines that may be used to advantage. But we need to be aware that situations will occur where we must use free thinking and local knowledge to arrive at the best course of action for each individual scenario.
  14. Thanks for the reply John. And you are correct, Argyle responded to this question in the other post. But if each question posted on this prospecting forum only received or needed one reply for there to be a definitive answer to the question then this forum would be a pretty dull place. So much of the content here is just our opinions not fact. Everybody sees things in a little different light so the larger amount of opinions posted gives readers a greater chance to learn and form there own opinion or modify a previous belief they held. At times if I post a question I already have my own opinion/belief/answer. I post the question to spark discussion, which in turn taps into the vast store house of metal detecting knowledge members of this forum possess. I hope to learn something from each answer posted and hope others can too. This post actually asks two questions. One about different types of tailings and the mineralization therein. How a detector may react to hot rocks in the matrix, rapidly changing ground from different parts of the dump, even coil selection between placer(many cobbles) or hard rock(often way smaller, uniform material) could be topics of discussion. The second question is the old PI versus VLF debate focusing on performance differences on tailings. Plenty of room here for discussion and learning if members avail themselves of the opportunity. This is Steve's forum but without active participation from it's members it will wither and die, cease to be one of the best MD forums on the net. So I will ask again- if you have an opinion please take the time to post it. HH, Merton
  15. I had posted the following in another thread recently but it did not get much traction maybe because the thread was about something totally different? LOL If you have an opinion let's hear it! This thread is not titled for experts only! I wonder if there is a difference in performance in tailings depending on the type of tailings. Do we need to differentiate between hard rock tailings and placer tailings when talking about the relative merits of PI versus VLF. For instance tailings from ancient river deposits as opposed to a hard rock tailings deposit consisting of iron rich ultra-mafic rocks. Or is it a moot point in all ground types of hard rock tailings due to no electrical conductivity in hard rock tailings because they are busted up? I think quartz tailings can be very benign almost to the point of an inability to GB on them. In regard to depth on tailings between PI/VLF being basically equal, is that true in all instances except for say a GPX or GPZ due to the battery power enabling a much higher level of gain? Like VLF = TDI but VLF < GPX? HH, Merton

  17. Fleng, forget the Minelab pinpointer. You will not need it. Save your money for an accessory coil.
  18. Klunker, you are this forums epitome of the quintessential "I can get 'er done" American. With your "can do" attitude I would like to send all my coils to you for your "Mods". With your DoDo coil on the end of the stick I just know my gold production will triple! HH, Merton p.s. I just pulled the trigger on the 5.5x10 concentric from Jeff in CO. I feel soooo much better now.
  19. Paul, I thought we would get a vacation when you went on vacation. I wonder if I can bribe JP to disable your WI-FI? LOL
  20. Nice bling Chuck. You may as well sell your 7000, you are doing better than some prospectors (me) LOL
  21. LipCa , I know that but please don't plan an intervention.............. Mitchel, that ain't happening. Hope to see you at the gap this summer......... Chuck, I like you and Johns advice the best! Oh My! I see there is a concentric in our classifieds for $100...............
