In your situation I would put an extra fused socket directly to the battery that would allow you to use accessories without having to have the ignition on as the capacity of the ML batteries is small compared to the truck battery by many times. If you can use a mono even in high mineral areas, then I would use the mono for depth however as Simon said there is no discrimination with it.

Nearly posted the photo too. Back in 1980 at Beggary Hills Wedderburn in the Golden Triangle a piece that weighed 84 ozs. was found by three boy had found it using an early Whites detector. Just after this was announced there was a rush there by everyone and their dog. The Wife, Me, and her brother went to have a look. I saw an old guy and his wife digging a hole about two feet deep. I asked if he would let me see how my detector responded to his target. I got nothing so he got back in the hole and his wife gave him he detector and said listen to this. I woke up straight away that he was getting his steel cap boots. He was not convinced till I told him to get out and let his wife have a go with her shoes. He was a bit upset as that ground was very hard to dig and he had been digging for over an hour. .....about the nugget.....

When in Bougainville ( Croc Gold ) the cane toads would cover our lawn and we had to pickup the dead ones we ran over on the driveway every day. Had no trouble with snakes in West Aust. gold field, a lot different Bushwalking in the south-west of WA. over a dozen on one walk. In Victoria have been annoyed by a few Brown Snakes while detecting. Once in the golden triangle while digging some tailings to put through a dredge. I cut a snake in to 3 bit and my mate jump out of the way were I was shovelling the dirt in a real hurry. This does not mean don't come to Victoria and take our gold but you are better off going to the other states. 😄

For the recreational prospector it's the enjoyment of doing that counts. The size has affect if the value is not to high, then they become trophies. When they can be swapped for a car, boat etc then it is hard to keep them. The recreational prospector requires something that can get small sub ounce (not extremely tiny nuggets) that make it a pleasure to uses (Weight, Balance, and Ease of matching the ground conditions. For other nuggets then it is special backup detector or coil where coverage and depth is required to bring down the odds of not getting any nuggets. Steve has summed this up on the first page of this POST.

Midas has been good to me, but most were small and a few multi ounce ones. My choice of finds of course is total weight but the pendent size is my favourite nuggets and yield the best price per gram. If they are bit heavy you will get a sore breast bone when moving (or that's what I tell the girls 😀 Same bits. Carol with a 16 ounce necklace.

It makes it worthwhile when the little ones lead you to big daddy. A lot of character in it.

As Norvic said all terrains are here. These shots are were I got my first ¼ ounce of gold by myself once I got my wheels, over 55 years ago. Walhalla is the start of Alpine Walking Trail. The Australian Alps Walking Track winds through the high country of Victoria, New South Wales and the ACT. It traverses rugged remote alpine country and bushwalkers must always be experienced, self reliant and have good navigation skills. To walk the whole trail can take between 5 and 8 weeks. Food drops or a support crew are necessary, as the trail passes through no towns, although it passes close to the ski resorts of Mt Hotham, Falls Creek, Mt Baw Baw, Thredbo, Charlotte Pass and Perisher. The 650 kilometre track generally follows ridges and high plains through some of the highest country in Australia. In many ways, it is the grandest and most difficult of all the long distance tracks in Australia. It is not the longest but with over 27,000 metres of climbing and descending it is indeed a tough walk (equivalent to more than 3 ascents and descents of Mt Everest!). This equates to between 550m and 800m of climbing and descending each day - definitely not a flat walk! It also crosses a lot of Australia's best alpine scenery making it a very scenic varied walk. The start of the walk at the towns rotunda. I have walked solo over the first 200 Km both ways as well as some of the other sections all of which has Gold mining history. Note the start of the track heading up from the right of the rotunda. Walhalla's gold value at only $600 a ounce. As you can see not flat like the shows you see.

Relic Ray as Chase Goldman said deciding what is the find of a life time varies for every one. The thrill can be a sudden feeling of excitement and pleasure or beating your best. I find it hard to say what mine was. Could it be the 4 0z that got me in the ounce club, or 26+ Oz from a patch that I got most of it out in a day, 19 Oz before lunch and the rest after I got the wife and friends out after lunch. Or was it the one of the Kilo+ Patches that I found in West Australia, and I nearly forgot my first nugget ( I must be getting old can not remember were, because the wife beat me by months for the first.😭 ) They all have their good points but the others have some better points. I always thought it would be the 26+ Oz find in one day but it was over in 12 hours, The kilo+ patches although more gold took many weeks to expire, but it was great getting dozens of nuggets a day week in and week out, one of them produced my largest Specimen that yielded over 16 Oz. The best was probably the 4 Oz I found it close to town early in the morning while waiting for my prospecting mate to finish his last night shift before we hit a new patch together that day. It maybe my next, lets hope so the pleasure of detecting. At the moment yours is the ½ cent that may or may not turn into a nickel so enjoy it. The worst that can happen is original value will be worth 10 time more. Keep up the good work and keep us up to date with your progress.

I am more than impressed with your finds in photo N°1 and N°3 what a haul. I guess when the GPX 6500 comes out with discrimination that rivals a good VLF detector, coins and jewellery will have no chance at all of hiding. More than well done and thanks for your report.

It depends on what you do or want to do. If you fossick ( fossicking) is prospecting especially when carried out as a recreational activity in abandoned or flogged mining areas, then you will be best getting a detector that can get very small nuggets. This requires a very careful and skilled efforts to get worth while amount in dollars but pleasure in the numbers that you can get, and less skunk days. If you prospect (prospecting) involves roaming likely areas on foot looking for direct indications of ore mineralization in outcrops, sediments, and soils and other attempts that have been done by others(old- timers) . It involves swinging a detector over large area of ground trying to get a target that is easy for the detector to pick up. This requires a persistent effort with an eye for the soil and terrain and knowledge of the area. A light weight detector that can find nugget with little swinging effort as a large area and varying ground condition have to be covered and a lot of days with no nuggets. Personally I have specked many nuggets while swinging the detector, some were noticed first by the detector up to 5 ounces. You gain knowledge of prospecting by fossicking in the area that you go to. This will save a lot time of learning the ground and you have somewhere to go when the skunk days get massive. Best of luck with your selection below are two one ounce plus nuggets found sitting on top of the ground note that the left one has moss on it so it was not a sunbaker 😄

Looking at the other links on your link I found ....Silver Collection Hallmarks.... the range of hallmarks is massive.

I am not too slow at learning😁 but I have been bitten by the yellow face jumping jack ants too many times. To me they are the worst sting I have had. We have Bull ants over an inch long and they need to be avoided but I would prefer a bit from them than the Jumping Jacks that are less than half an inch but jump a good six inches to get me.
