Large Nuggets - Closer Or Further Away From A Reef
geof_junk replied to Jin's topic in Detector Prospector Forum
I have found 10 gm or more above the current shed, but most of the fly sh!t tends to move quickly from the source. The only rule that tends to help me is a distinct change in gradient away from the shed, tends to hold the large bit longer. Large specimen tend to be close to similar size quartz unless they contain more than 10 Oz of gold. It a lottery becauses as mention by other. The factors that can affect the location -How long since it was shed, are there more recent sheds. The slope of ground and the soil erosion is not even. I have found 4 to 6 Oz bits on high spots sun baking in relative flat ground with island of soil just 6 inches higher than most of the ground. I have found when you get more than 100 yards from the source the spots where the number of hits drop off for a while a reasonable bit turns up. The answer to your question the larger bit is where you find them -

If you made a cast of that copper nugget with pure gold it would need 510 gm of gold. 16.4 troy oz. It would look like a nice water washed Au Nugget. -

The prize was incidental, the playing of the game was the fun. Thanks a lot Ridge Runner. -
Just remember that you need more than 300 nuglets ( 0.1 grams Slightly larger than a turdlet and much larger than a trinket, the nuglet is the average piece of fecal matter ejected by the erupting anus. Greatly known for most of the "aromatic" fragrance while shatting, the nuglet is a colorful and sensual component of the dumping process. Watch out though, don't mistake it for smudglet, ...)To make only one Ounce

Video - Google Earth For Prospecting
geof_junk replied to Steve Herschbach's topic in Detector Prospector Forum
A lot can be done using GIS programs these day. It is the way to go. Back in the 1980/81 we used to check aerial photo in the golden triangle for puddling dams and surfacing areas (striped of trees). This was one way of finding spots that others might not of found. I then used the mines department record and databases. This lead me to get all the pre 1950 gold mines and put them in my own database (google .......historical-gold-mines-in-google-earth) which I made available for Ozi gold prospector. As a hobby it has made my gold chasing well worth while. http://golddetecting.4umer.net/t2273-historical-gold-mines-in-google-earth -

I remember exploring some mines about 55 years ago (with no experience, a teenager) around Walhalla. Later in life I went down a hand dug shaft (150 ft ) and went to the end of the tunnel where the owners was lying down digging along the bed rock.At that stage it was only about 2½ ft high and he was getting good gold for a 3 man operation, $300 per Ounce. Here is a link to some Videos of mine exploration that reminded me of my younger day, NB I have no connection with this group hope you enjoy. https://www.facebook.com/pg/TheVictorianHistoricalMineChasers/videos/

I still have a White's Spectrum XLT It was great in junky areas and had a wide range of target selections. I don't know if it is heavy (have not used it for a while) but I told I'm getting ....old.... I meant gold with ML and they are heavy. -
Selling Gold - Are Bigger Bits Worth More?
geof_junk replied to Jin's topic in Detector Prospector Forum
With gold price of Au$1650 @ the moment with Ebay 10% of final sold price, you would have to sell at Au$1833 just to cover their commission only of Au$183 for your 2 nuggets of approx. 1 ounce with no mailing included. Best bet is sell nice bit at gold fields caravan parks as most hobbyist will pay gold price plus. -
"I think the other 48 Aussies who were there could definitely learn a few things" My be they found none........but they need to fill in their hole. You must do a report at the end of the 3 months and send a copy to both the leaseholder and the DMP, with the amount and EXACT location (GPS points) of any minerals recovered, even if you don't find anything you must do a Nil report. Failure to do so could result in a fine up to $5000, and/or the DMP can Bar you from further 40Es for 3 years. even if its only 1 bit and 0.0002 grams, as your one bit might not be much but if the other 120 people who had a 40E over the same bit of ground also only found a couple of small bits and report it when the leaseholder puts it all on a chart plot they may find that one particular area has a high concentration of gold and therefore worth further investigation
