  1. First, I want to say this is one of the best forums I have ever seen. Steve has put together a GREAT website. The knowledge base on the forum is just phenomenal. I have learned so so much more about metal detectors from all of you. So let me explain assumed. I assumed: White's and Garret were the best metal detectors. Carl Moreland was still working for White's Metal detectors were 10 years behind technology of today. (just my thought) After making the assumptions, I realized how wrong I was thanks to this forum. I realized White' and Garrett have been a sleep. Carl Moreland either quit or was fired. White's and Garrett detector are whats 10 behind. When I got back into metal detecting last year. I was looking for a new machine. I looked at White's and Garrett with the assumptions. I thought about building my own detector. So I read Carl Moreland's book. (Great book) I realized that it would take me 2 to 5 years to develop my own detector. So I scrapped this idea. I could not understand why White's or Garrett had not built a detector with what I expected. I thought that with today's technology there should be a sweep frequency oscillator for the coil-s and an easy to read display. That being said, White's closest model was the V3i. Garrett had nothing. I quickly realized that I needed to look at everything. Because of the forum, I found Minelab was being discussed. When I found the Minelad Safari, I quickly realized it had what I was thinking of building. I don't like their LCD display. It does not look clear a crisp to me. However the machine looks promising. Then I looked at the E-track and CTX-3030. These also look to be very promising machines. Just the price is higher that I want to pay for a -2 times a month hobby. I really wish the best for White's and Garrett. They have their work cut out for them. I want to thank John, Chuck, Tom and Terry and many others I do not know their names for the knowledge your provided and a special thank you to Steve H for his superior knowledge and the wonderful website he has provided.
  2. I think Steve is on the money. As I said in an earlier post, I was looking at purchasing a MX Sport, My expectations of the machine were high. When I saw that people were having to send their machine back for a program update, well I decided to pass at this time. Today, everyone knows how to use a computer and should be able to update firmware.. I will wait for the MX Sport2 or another machine from Whites.. I am a retired electronics engineer and I have always have high expectations of the electronic equipment I purchase. I really like Whites as a company. You have always been good to me. I have been loyal to Whites for over 30 years. I own no other detectors. Just before retiring there is a business prophecy being taught. It was call “80 percent rule . Do 80 percent work and save money from the 20 percent not done. I did not like it and watched a fortune 500 company quickly loose position. I still remember the CEO telling us nothing has to be perfect, 80 percent will be fine. Don't let Whites fall into this position. Whites should be the leader in detector technology. I expect no less and others feel the same way. Whites is on the pedestal unless they decided to step off. New quality machines should be rolling out every year or two. Not five to nine years. Carl Moreland is a super smart engineer. Let the engineering staff think and work freely to enable development. Business restraints limit innovation. Don't ride on the past technology, innovate the future. Tom, I don't know your function at Whites. I can say I think you have done a remarkable job here on the forum promoting Whites. Update: I have been corrected. I did not know that Carl Moreland was no longer at Whites. Sorry for the mistake.
  3. I was in a computer/engineering class about 15 to 20 years ago. This was discusses in the class. However, printers were also discussed and when you print a picture, some of the information is encoded into the picture. Sorry I don't remember the entire amount of data. So for example you decide to print money. your computer and printer information will be on the image printed. Information like printer type, computer name, IP address etc. This way counterfeit money can be traced. This class did not go into detail due to security.
  4. I have only read or seen videos of the MX Sport. What troubles me is many videos are like the person want to say something, but doesn't. I guess hesitant in speaking. Many forums lay it on the line. I guess my expectations was the MX Sport was to out perform the MXT All Pro. Not sure that is the case. Had my sights set on a MX Sport. However, I am not sure it has the bang for the buck. As Terry said, "I think Whites tried hard to give us a great machine but based on this and some reviews by folks I know there are some issues yet with it." I think this is the case. I was all excited and started to purchase one. Don't know why i did not place the order. However, I guess I will keep my old machine and keep researching the MX Sport or a different machine.
  5. The circuit in the patent looks simple. I could only fine one image. However, patents can be deceiving. The science is fantastic. The design of the actual circuit will be far more complex. All I can say to John Earle is, "Great Job". It's now up to White's to take the idea and run. If I read and understand the patent correctly. A lot for a old retired electronics engineer to take in. We will be seeing a future White's machine with greater depth and more accurate discrimination. Possibly a 2D or 3D screen to show the target and trash in the ground. It won't be cheep!
  6. I borrowed the White's 5000. I ended up purchasing a White's 6000di series 2. Still in use today. Thinking of purchasing a new detector. Just confused as to which one. Thought of the White's MX Sport or maybe the Racer 2. Just got to do more research.
  7. My wife told me too! I am new to the forum so here goes. A friend loaned me a White's 5000 metal detector 30 years ago. I brought it home and my wife and her mother were standing in the front yard. I got it out and they wanted to know what I had and I describe to them the metal detector and you could find coins and other stuff in the ground . Immediately, they wanted to see it work. So it got the machine running and started sweeping. With in moments I hit a target. My wife ask me what the sound was. I told here we found something. Next thing my wife stomps her foot on the target spot and hollers "I got it marked" her mother is jumping up and down screaming "dig it up, dig it up". She then ran to the garage and got a shovel and they started digging. That was the first nickle. My wife looked at me and said "we got to have one of these machines".
