  1. This a very sad time as John B will truly be missed by all who knew him-He put some people on to the biggest nuggets they ever found Including Robbery A as he named him.I first met  JB about 30 years ago I was out hunting for gold in the middle of quartzite when I bumped into him and he was not only funnier than you know what especially when he razzed people but a real wealth of knowledge.Rip my friend 😞

I've been researching the Minelab detectors and I would like to make a sizeable upgrade from my VLF detector (GB2). I would like to own a new PI detector that can handle hot ground better than the VLF machines can. I should first point out that I will mainly be using the detector for hunting meteorites, but I foresee myself hunting for gold in the coming years as well.

Currently there is the great deal going on with the 6000 for $4500. I have also been looking at the GPX 5000 as it can be found used for around $2000-$2500 on ebay. I've read a lot of posts saying that the GPX 5000 is a good all around detector and can handle hot, mineralized ground quite well.

On the other hand, there have also been great reviews on the 6000 for finding small gold, and the ease of use and lighter weight is very attractive as well.

Just wanted to ask what you guys think the better option is for handling hot, mineralized ground, as that would be the primary ground I would be hunting starting out. I'm leaning towards the 6000, but I've heard that it can have issues with hot ground, and if that's the case, then I might just want to get a used 5000 at first, and then I can always upgrade to the 6000 in the future...

My main considerations are cost and handling hot ground. I can deal with the heavier weight that the 5000 brings but if the 6000 truly is leagues ahead of the 5000, then I will probably go with the 6000.

I've got my 5000 setup with the smaller battery on the side of it and Bluetooth low latency audio, it's a great rig like that, doesn't feel much heavier than the 6000 either HOWEVER and it's a big however, the 5000 even with my most sensitive of coils such as a 10" fully spiral X-coil and the NF Sadie is no match for the 6000 on small gold and I'm in a place where I can crank the 5000 right up running it in sensitive extra with boosted audio etc on maximum gain the 6000 is much more sensitive and also deeper on smaller gold.

The 6000 also picks up bits of gold the 5000 misses completely in any timing, reasonable size bits too that it just can't detect.  If you don't mind missing VLF type small gold then the 5000 is perfectly fine, covering ground with a good VLF and a 5000 gets you closer to the 6000 performance, I say closer as the VLF still lacks depth that the 6000 can provide on some smaller bits.   I'd say the 5000 can be better in many ways than the 6000 as you have such a big coil selection with a coil to suit every occasion and much better hot rock handling, I just can't see the 6000 matching the bigger target depth of a 5000 with appropriate big coil on it.

This is where I can see the Axiom excelling in the future, it has the more adjustable controls, seems to be not too far off the 6000 for small gold sensitivity and that's even using it's stock coils, handles tough ground well and doesn't so far seem to miss the more porous bits of gold the 5000 struggles on.  Once the aftermarket start to tinker and make a range of coils for it like Detech have already said they'll be doing I can see good things happening with the Axiom.   If they can make improved coils for the Axiom like various brands have done for the 5000, possibly 6000 and especially 7000 then the Axiom is worth keeping an eye on.

Have you tried Fine Gold-I have found gold under a Grain in hot ground with my 5 and thats small enough for me-I havent used a 6 or a Ax yet or even my 5 in  2 to 3 years do to my health but hopefully plan to do so again-so for now all I can do is watch the forums and vids until then-whats the smallest you found with the 6 ? PS-I tried the cordless blue tooth set up years ago and didnt like the lag but since they came out with the low latency I thought Id give it a try again .

  4. Ive watched alot of Vids about the 6 and so far Im not impressed enough to go out and dump 6 k on it-I know my 5 could find everything Ive seen so far depth and size and i like having complete control over my settings-hell there is so many ways to run the 5 for many different conditions-sure I hate being tethered to a cable and battery but to me thats the only down fall-Im buiilding a battery pack for it now that will stick on the side of it and get rid of the battery brick and cable and do blue tooth for the audio now that its low latency-Maybe alot of the X Gpx users that switched over and finding more gold didnt know how to set the Gpx series up correctly-I have a question why didnt Minelab just put the 5 in a smaller package and keep all all the adjustability and make it so you could use all your old coils ? I have been eyeing the Axium it looks like a better fit for me with more settings than the 6 has but Im going keep using the 5 and see what Fisher and Nokita come out with-

The only way to keep any forum alive is for the members to participate, especially with posting frequently. Notice that these forums seem to flourish, it is because of new content being posted and active participation from its members. Once that starts to diminish, these forums will go the way of the others.

IMO I think the owners of the forums should precipitate as well which I see a lack of

  6. I personally like the  black look better- I sold my whites 24 k but the guy only wanted the stock coil setup so if anyone is interested in a 6 inch concentric with cover and a 4x6 coil with cover both lighty used-Ill let them both go  for $300 shipped in the lower 48 PM me here if interested-Thx  PS- will also trade for a nuggetfinder 17 elliptical evo mono coil or a 15 rnd evo mono coilthumbnail_IMG_0238.jpg.c67d32a33af486ff737d686c7b87ded0.jpg

Hiiiiiiiiiii guys!!!! So glad DP is back online. Thanks whoever fixed it. Joined Prospecting Australia in the meantime as I had already given up after daily tries to log in. It's an ok forum, but just not the same as DP. I got my 17 but thus far was unable to use it due to all the wildfires and the crazy weather/smoke. But I have my full face respirator ready for this weekend because I WILL go !

Thanks to many for the great replies….much appreciated. I guess my concern is I generally try to hunt the deeper and bigger pieces whenever I can and in new ground……I’ve gone days without hitting any targets but I’ve also been rewarded with (perseverance and stubbornness). I don’t go looking for smaller bits over old ground…..they are incidental to finding bigger pieces.
I still use a 3500 and 2100 with the bigger mono coils and only use a DD as a last resort……I get some strange looks and remarks when these machines come out 🤓

Will the 6000 hit a 3oz nugget at 2 feet in heavy mineralised and hard ground?

I know 3oz can be any size and shape but let’s say one that is like a small egg that fits in the palm of your cupped hand. I’m the first to admit that I’m probably a bit too paranoid about missing the bigger deeper pieces……generally speaking, the timings in the 2100 and to an extent, the 3500, will minimise this.

     Thanks for the responses….👍

Just remember the older tech deeper beepers  will and most of the time  get the Lions share of most patches only leaving little bits for the new tech deeper beepers :nugget:
