California Flooding?
WesD replied to Reno Chris's topic in Gold Panning, Sluicing, Dredging, Drywashing, Etc
Thanks for clarifying Scott. Looks like this event is half of what flowed in '97, unless its risen since yesterday. -

I will tell you this, a high volume limit will blow your ears out if you hunt in trashy California with headphones. I run mine at 6 or 7 to keep the decibels down

Good stuff Paul, I like your style :)

No doubt! that 14 is already a back wrecker

Lions & Tigers & Bears...ok, Mostly Lions
WesD replied to 1515Art's topic in Detector Prospector Forum
I rarely see much deer in those surrounding forests anymore, due to them being hunted out by people, forest fires, or maybe cats. But there are bazillions of them living around the lower elevations in town, where they are not hunted. Make sense the cats are frequenting town more often to get their food. -
If you are looking for max depth on quite type ground, just run in Normal ground setting, instead of Difficult. The rest of the factory default settings work amazingly well, maybe bump the sensitivity up some, if you like. Be prepared to dig deep holes!

Last Night A Prospecting Pick Saved My Life
WesD replied to tboykin's topic in Detector Prospector Forum
These seams that produce detectable pocket gold are normally small, like Chris said. You will never see them from sat imagery. Although you may see adjacent trenches or low pressure hydraulic work. -
Sweet coin Rob!! Congrats

Miner John Skidplate For Minelab SDC 2300
WesD replied to Steve Herschbach's topic in Minelab Metal Detectors
The only thing I like about the factory skids, is they run quieter. But they sure are not made to last. -
Well, physical gold is already selling for $1440, so a decent batch of nuggets should fetch at least that!

Ya J, I found that stated here: So the way they are describing it, for example, you can't put two 20 acre 1320" claims end to end, unless you have more than 2 signers, since that would be fitting into the boundaries of two 40 acre squares. But I dont know, maybe I'm misunderstanding that. http://www.blm.gov/or/programs/minerals/files/guide-locating-claims.pdf
-
Thanks Jason and Paul!!! That's good to know you can calculate and approximate the quarters yourself. Ive seen something similar to Jason's description, of a 1/2 mile long claim, taken up with 5 acre lots, by one claimant. But I'm now wondering on the legality of filing that way myself, since wouldn't you be going through two 40 acre squares to achieve that? In all instances, a claim must also meet the following requirements: A location by 1 or 2 persons must fit within the boundaries of a square 40 acre parcel
-
Ya guys this Gulch claiming is a bit of a mystery. Probably smart to stick to the 1320 x 660 acre blocks to be safe. One more question: If a section is only surveyed for the 4 corners, and no quarter sections or quarter quarters are surveyed, can you still describe a claim by aliquot parts by dividing up the section on paper into quarters?
-
Paul Its a way of filing a placer claim in a steep canyon. But Im still unclear on the details about size and how to describe the claim. For example in the section below, can 2 guys claim the gulch highlighted in red, or would you need 3 signers.

I was researching online about filing a gulch claim, and found this post, which I copied below. Can someone tell me if the part about 2 locators fitting in a 60 acre square is correct, or do they mean 80 acres? "Second only to acreage the gulch claim is a real problem. Sure, it's legal to file a gulch, but BLM discourages it and for good reason. If your claim is in an area which has been surveyed you are supposed to file in accordance with the Public Land Survey System. You can file a gulch if your minerals are in a very narrow area, such as a river. Although we've seen a lot of gulch filings we haven't seen many which are valid. While people know they can file a gulch claim by using metes and bounds such as "Beginning at the confluence of Slug Gulch an Starvation Creek and extending up Starvation Creek to the North with 50 yards on each side of the center line..." The gulch claim must still be constrained to 20 acres for one locator, 40 for two and so on. However, most people don't realize the gulch claim must fit into a 40 acre square with one locator, a 60 acre square for two locators and so on. Most people run their gulch claims across multiple 40 acre squares trying to take up as much creek as they can. It is not a valid claim. You should consult the BLM manual prior to filing a gulch claim. It's a risky type of claim but if you insist on doing it do it right and read up on it."

Ya I hear you on that Klunker, I never seen one less than 12 feet long, myself!!!

Buy these with the larger diameter positive terminal, and the problem is solved. http://www.amazon.com/Tenergy-Premium-Capacity-Rechargeable-Batteries/dp/B004057DP6/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1459788052&sr=1-1&keywords=Tenergy+Premium+C And you can roll a single wrap of electrical tape around your supplied batteries to keep them from bouncing around I agree we shouldn't have to do that.

Try wiggling the headphone wire at the plug to see if you get any audio static or cuts. Ive had probably 10 pairs of Koss headphones go bad, due to that wire breaking. It usually starts out as an intermittent audio cut
-
yep sounds like you're not keeping your module in line of sight, or your headphone wires are frayed at the plug. I like Chris' idea with the extension cable!
