  1. Well said Doc, I never had the pleasure of meeting Retta, but I did get training in Rye Patch in 06 or so from Gerry, I also had the privilege of going to Ganes Creek Ak with him and a bunch of guys. It was great and some nice nuggets were found. Gerry is a great guy and offers wonderful training opportunities, his trainers are a reflection of his helpful and generous spirit. Thanks for sharing your photos and thoughts.
  2. I appreciate all of the contributions whether related to Box Elder Co. or other, thanks much!
  3. Jim and MSC, thank you both for your input, it is appreciated!
  4. Do any of you know of any areas in Box Elder Co. Utah known to have gold large enough to be considered "detectable"? I have a friend who is under the impression that such gold exists there, I don't find evidence of such in my search thus far. Any insight you may have is appreciated. Thank you.
  5. Maybe Gerry M in Idaho will see this, and chime in as he has lots of experience with such piles. In Alaska they knocked down and spread the piles with a D-8 or larger Cat. The material was spread out on a relatively level area and there would be small windrows a few feet wide and maybe a foot or so tall between the spread material.... Perfect situation for a VLF machine, kind of like shooting ducks in a barrel. (Ganes Creek Alaska, Clark-Wiltz operated the program, Dave drove the school bus.). Good people, good grub, great gold. A problem with large piles is the nuggets migrate down when the rocks are disturbed so as Hard Prospector said it is best to spread the piles out if possible.... HH
  6. Welp, they say eating big black birds is an acquired taste, I think it is a good thing for everyone to eat a bit now and again, kinda keeps us humble...... Now let's see, where did I put that fork? Good story, thanks!
  7. Early framer's tool for plumbing walls, if it is not plumb use tool to yerke it in or out and make plumb...🙈
  8. I believe Chris announced a few months ago that he was stepping down as the associate editor (I believe that was his title there) to pursue other interests. He also said he would be contributing to the magazine from time to time.... If anyone has better info feel free to correct this, thanks.
  9. David, I did a quick informal pole and all of the participants are in favor of the storytelling thread. I know there are many interesting stories to be told about the people, places and unusual events folks have experienced wandering about the gold fields.. I have lots of fine memories of the people I have known as a result of this compelling habit we all seem to share, trustworthy and reliable are two words which come to mind. I do miss them. Post on!
  10. The Redrock Randsburg Road is closed at highway 14 and at the other end at US395. The Redrock Randsburg Road where it turns east at Garlock Road is closed as well. Randsburg is still accessible from US395..... The eastbound side of Redrock Randsburg Road is washed out for about a hundred feet or so just after you turn off of 14..... Safe travels!
  11. Thanks Aero Guy, I haven't been to the El Paso Mts. for a year, getting to be that time again.... Trash, hot rocks and sometimes gold. Good hunting to you.
  12. That photo looks like it might be around the Red Chispa, I wonder what this weeks storm did to the area.....
  13. Glad you were able to get out and experience the Axiom. Clark is a great guy.
  14. I agree with Clay, if the agency is not willing to put it in writing a verbal opinion or approval from a minion probably won't be honored. Difficult situation at the moment it seems... Good luck to those affected!
  15. Mitchel, Glad to hear you are up and running (walking). I think Norvic is spot on, take it easy for a bit, rest as necessary and in a short bit you will be back in the desert slaying it. Jeff
  16. Good job Reese! How did the nugget end up on the bench 3' above the hole where you located it first, maybe I missed something?? Thanks for sharing that dig, the country looks amazing! Jeff
  17. That is a pretty sophisticated looking drone, good on those guys for thinking out of the box!
  18. I had an experience very much like Dirtman mentioned, about two years or so back I was at one of Bill Southern's get together at LSD (Little San Domingo) and was progressing down a wash with my 500 humming along quite nicely. I may have stopped and removed my head phones I don't remember now. At any rate I noticed a distant noise which I could not identify and I stood still for a moment listening and wondering what I was hearing, at some point I thought it was the sound of a four wheeler approaching and I was waiting for it to come into view...... What came into view was a dark cloud of beeez, doing what bees do, swarming and I just happened to be under their air space, when I became aware of what the commotion was all about I just lay down in the wash and let the traffic clear.... I lost count but there were a good many in the swarm and they were maybe ten or fifteen feet AGL. I thought at the time that they should not be a threat because they were just changing locations and weren't at all aggressive. Since I am allergic to beeez I was very relieved when their tail lights faded into the beautiful evening air.
