  1. Take them to a field a known detecting competitor uses, bury them, and film his heart attack when he digs them.
  2. in the nasty clay prevalent in so much of the ground around where I detect....copper coins don't usually come out looking too great. Sunday I got out to a new permission very near my house that I have been trying to locate the owner for almost 2 years and just made contact 2 weeks ago. The grass is crazy high (2-3 ft), so detecting was limited to areas under the trees and bushes. Still managed what is probably my best grade Indian Head. It still needs some more dirt picked out, but taking my time with this one. Going to ask permission to take my mower over there if I get time to go again. Happy Hunting!
  3. the wheat cent offset from center that high a percentage is indeed fairly rare, but due to having the normal copper corrosion, wont be worth much. If you had more than the 19, it could potentially have more value, but the year/mint would have had to already be a key date for a dug one to be worth much. A couple coin dealers in my area assure me no copper coin I dig would be of any interest to them. no large cents? -NO. How about a 1793 large cent?-NO. How about a 1793 Chain reverse large cent?-Oh, bring that one in and Ill buy it, they always say ?
  4. GOOD GOLLY I have dug a lot of those...now I have to save them too, since they are musical instrument parts, lol. Thanks for the question and the answer !!
  5. if anyone has ideas, i would appreciate your knowledge or guesses. I am pretty sure it isnt plated, but it doesnt ID like a sterling ring would on my detector. Thanks for your help
  6. Hiyas...I recently dug a part of a pewter flatware. I have never seen a makers mark or other identifying mark on flatware that I have dug before. Putting it under my scope, and fooling around a lot with lighting directions, this is about the best it is going to get. Any one have access to pewter manufacturer information? I am stumped so far. The bottom is METAL, the top left looks like a B or S to me, and the right side I believe is NTA
  7. Lol, Steve ! The issue here in PA is...if you wait for it to get warm, it will get warm, but rain or be 100% humidity. If you wait for the ground to dry out, you will get a drought. If you wait for cooler weather, it drops to 0. So, if you think the detector wont break...you just have to go when you can. I have had the VGG out surrounded by a zipped plastic bag multiple times already due to rain....the advantage there is no reason whatsoever to look at it since there is no screen.
  8. Bryan, I'm a bit impatient....so I got out my dremel tool and the softest wire brush I had for it...sure shined up the practice nickels....gonna take more practice, though, lol...
  9. Since Steve is looking for more pictures... I did get out Saturday afternoon. Temps said 30 deg, so figured it was a good day to see how my Vista Gold Gain likes colder weather. I have been addicted to using it since trading for it in August, in any site that is not too infested with modern aluminum. The part of the field I was hunting is usually very wet, and hence, freezes very solid...its kind of like frozen mud...once you disturb it...gets messy. The frozen solid layer 2 weeks ago was only about 2 inches...Saturday it was about 5 inches. A brief plug for anyone looking for a new shovel. I have had my Lesche 38 ground shark d-handle for more than 3 years now. It is indestructible. It was taking 3 or 4 jumps per cut to get through the ice layer...then I basically pried using my weight to get the plug up. The targets were mostly below the frozen stuff, so actually pinpointing and retrieving targets once the plug was out...pretty easy. This spot produces its share of buttons...didnt disappoint this time, either. VGG just nails the small stuff as easily as the larger items. The oval is a cufflink, it has a running fox on it...ozzie and I have both gotten multiple of these at this spot now, and I have multiples of the other ladies buttons from other hunts there as well. The object just to the left of the spoon....It is a cast item, as it has a seam. It is a decorative item, as it has two flowers on it. I will post other pictures if I can manage to get it cleaned up any better. Temps have been so low the last 4 days...no shot at detecting now unless it warms up for a week or two...i shall hope.
  10. Bryan, Nice work on the Vs. I love finding them. What are you using to get rid of the red?
  11. An app I use is Evernote...it lets me put as many spreadsheets, pictures, etc into it from PC, tablet, phone, anything...then have access to it on any of the others, even offline without signal, as long as I have synched it prior to losing service. There are payment choices for it, but the standard free version handles anything you would need.
  12. There is a beach volleyball court near my place. About a month ago, on my way home from another site, it was empty. I had my super six coil on at the time, so I did a walk through the court...not being overly slow or thorough, but more trying to get a feel for the ground balance, how high I could have gain and sensitivity, etc. Found the standard couple coins, but did get two stud earrings. One silver stud with CZ, the other just plated with glass. Not bad, I thought. Here is pic for size. Then, last week, I was going past it again, this time with VGG again, but with the stock 11" pitbull coil. I decided to run it again, and go slower, and listen for deeper items, because it has multiple layers of deep sand. I was thinking deep coins. the only notable item I got was this stone with small setting. Tone was clean and strong. It was only 3 or 4 inches down, but pretty cool. Basically told me unless I am concerned with too many targets under the coil at one time, no reason to take the larger coil off.
  13. both sides do have depth to them...no side is flat.
  14. VGG is a Deeptech Vista Gold Gain. It is the new 30khz version of the Vista Gold. I never had the Gold, but I really love the audio this thing has. I have dug more iron relics in the past few weeks since owning it, on purpose, because it is so easy to tell a large iron item in the ground vs a nail, etc.
  15. Howdy folks, A friend of mine is putting an addition on his house, built originally circa 1750s. I spent some time working on the dig pile from the foundation work. I have found very little other than nails. One old drawer knob, and this little item. It is a nice brass item with gold plate...still a little of the gold plate hanging on in spots, so I really don't want to clean it much. The little egg shaped item does spin freely on the post, as does the little skinny thing, which I will call a leaf. That has the most remaining plating on it. So far, searches have brought up nothing similar, but so far the best guess from a friend is a pocket watch fob. Any other ideas? I think the handle part used to swing freely, and it has a small hole in it, smaller diameter than the iron rust colored part it is touching at this point. I was using the VGG with super six coil...it really does have awesome audio in a mess of nails. Thanks for looking.
  16. First, I would recommend a relationship with the coin or jewelry dealer. Buy something from them. Sell them some stuff. Mine knows I will be in to trade silver and gold jewelry I find for coins or bullion, so I get fair deals on things both ways. We are at the point where she expects to see some of my more interesting finds, and she also knows what types of things I am looking for, and sets them aside for me to look at. My 1, 2.5, 5, and 10 dollar gold coins for testing my detectors have all been purchased or traded for with her...some are in PCGS holders, some are damaged or were jewelry...but we are both making out well with our transactions now. There are a bunch of coin/jewelry dealers in my area I trust about as far as I can throw them, and it took a while to find this one...so have patience. An impatient person will never get value, imo. Good luck.
  17. Folks. I have plenty of hours on MMK now, but have a beach vacation coming up shortly. For those of you who have put time in on the salt water wet sand and shallow water, can you give settings with experiences? freq, mode(if not beach) etc.
  18. I haven't been able to find much time to detect since getting my Kruzer..I got about an hour and a half on Saturday of free time, so grabbed it. It was raining, so I said, no problem, its waterproof! It rained most of the time I was out. Everything worked fine. Instead of using the wireless headphones though, I used the adapter, and just grabbed a pair of old ear buds. Since I was running in two tone with the small coil, and digging anything but iron, they worked well enough. I have to say...having wireless for a couple months....wireless is the best ! It was kindof heartbreaking to be tethered. I am tempted to find some really huge hat I can wear over the wireless phones for the next trip in the rain. The rubber handle grip is also nice for the wet stuff...mud and dirt dont get absorbed by the handle...just wipes off at the end of the hunt. My only issue, was in the heavier rainfall periods, it was a challenge to read the screen menus. Since I am still new with the Kruzer (maybe 20 hunts), I am still playing with frequency, switching 2tone to Gen, etc quite often to check how targets sound before digging. I was planning to cut out an ipad screen protector, then put rainx on it before I go out in the rain again. Any other ideas? Thanks.
  19. Terry, Can you elaborate on the 5khz helping? I have been unable so far to determine much of a difference...are you hearing more, less, or just different in 5 vs both or just the 19khz?
  20. nice one, that you can still see the rim all the way around like that. Good Pull, George
  21. Steve, A couple reasons.. I have a coin type set that I have worked at purchasing over the years, and also a coin type set that I am filling out with dug coins. It is rewarding to dig the tougher ones, although I probably have no shot at some of the oldest silver, but the dug book isnt missing too many any more. When I am out in the farm fields with few targets, everything gets dug except hot rocks and the lowest of iron...it is amazing how many times nickel area numbers turn out to be partial pewter spoons, and other farmer dropped stuff. I love trying to research them..if I stay to high numbers/tones, I would never get most of that. It is sometimes a bit mentally challenging to dig even lower numbers, knowing that to get a 3 cent nickel or 1 dollar gold at depth...have to do it. More importantly, my young daugher loves to help me "clean'" the old coins i get, so most nickles, being in such lousy shape anyway, give her the ammunition she needs to happily work on them while keeping the more delicate IndianHead cents for me.
  22. So far, I can say I like it a lot. I love the Gen/ all metal mode. It has a really nice steady hum and even with volume not too high, can hear as I get near to anything quite nicely. I really like how most iron items really stay at 04 or 03...i snagged a really cool old iron tool that was quite deep by measuring its size, and noting the higher than normal numbers for nail, etc. Yesterday I had it in 5k Gen, sensitivity to 95. Open field with a ton of hot rocks. I was very relieved when I heard that nice "boing" sound like the F75 gives when going over them. I was surprised at the small items I got without being in high frequency from messages on the boards. I really enjoy the tones in Gen..was very easy to tell both coins I encountered by the very clean hits all directions. It is a little nose heavy, but I am going to work on extending the back under my shoulder to offset the torque. I am hoping to get into some bad soil next week and see how it performs there, but so far am extremely happy.
