Firstly settings please, but I think I can guess at it a bit.

Sorry, should have thought of that.  My setting are very similar to Lunk's (because he was the one I learned from 🙂) and I have not really strayed to much from them for the last few years.  Although this year I am going to make a point to change it up in some old "patches" and see what comes about.

Gold Mode: High Yield (mostly); Ground Type: Normal; Sensitivity: 10-15; Ground Balance Mode: Semi; Ground Smoothing: Locate Patch; Volume: 15; Volume Limit: 3; Audio Smoothing: High; Threshold Level: 27; Threshold Pitch: 25.

I’m not sure if the sluggish button presses are linked as I find the GPZ frustrating slow at the best of times (press, waiting waiting waiting.....change 😖), the sluggish button behavior can also be corrected by firming up the Mylar power strip.

What you described is exactly what happens to me, sluggish or lagging button behavior.  I used to think I was not pushing the button fully, then I realized that I push the button and wait......it changes or selects.  After being able to fly through buttons like on an iPhone, this is so........slow........😴   My Z is no longer under warranty so I could open it up and take a look at the Mylar power strip, but that sure does make me nervous.  I think first I will try Rick's suggestion of turning off the GPS and see if it speeds things up.  Have you ever tried that or anyone for that matter?  More people who give it a go, the more we might know.

The other thing that can send the GPZ into conniptions is having the WM12 turned on before the detector boots up, it tries to connect up the audio before all the parameters are fully loaded and can throw the detector into a looping power cycle. Best work flow is to turn on the detector and wait till the battery icon appears then turn on the WM12, follow this procedure and all is well.

I will give this a try too.  I always have done it completely backwards than you described.  I always liked hearing that Minelab tune intro.  Kind of gets you all excited to metal detect😁.  But I will do your way, especially since you have had much better results.

Thank you for the help JP!

I think many of you 60+ Guys will get the harness. Just ask CTX hunters - and you’ll probably be using bigger coils than it’s 11”.   Just a big coil on a stick is still mass you have to move repetitively and it’s going to get your elbow or forearm.

Or at least a stick to attach to it.  That's all I use with my Z in the woods.  Flat desert areas though the harness comes on.

  3. After reading the thread from 2015 it appears that this is an ongoing problem that has never been resolved.  I’m hoping that some people out there might have some answers and I’m really anxious now to try Rick’s fix of just turning the GPS off (although really more of a workaround than actual fix, since now can’t use the GPS, but still appreciative Rick!).  Anybody else out there have the same problems that might want to try this?  I’m currently in winter lockdown with 0 degree temps to give it a go yet.  If enough people have this problem, and might be able to give this work around a try, I can put together a tally and maybe send something to Minelab and ask them if they’re ever going to resolve this problem that’s been going on. Worth a shot anyways.  I got alot of time at the moment 😊

Do you have the GPS turned on ? Having it on slows the whole process down, must be RAM hungry on the CPU ! I found the whole thing very slow when the GPS was running and ended up not using it at all because of the lag !

    Cheers,

    Rick

Yes i do!  I’ll have to give that a try I only use the GPS so I can tell what time it is in the field. Other than that I don’t use it at all, but it is on.  Come to think about it when I remember the buttons being faster that was when the GPS was broken. Thanks Rick!   I’ll give that a try but I’ll have to wait a few months until the snow is gone.  LOL

Thanks for that JP!👍 Since day one with the detector I have noticed that my WM12 audio sometimes drops out randomly as well. I used to build PCs, so reseating the mylar cable should be easy enough and hopefully solve both issues. 🤞

I have had this problem recently except it happened when switching gold or ground modes.  I was switching back and forth to check target signals and lost all audio.  It has happened twice and both times i have had to power off the Z to get the sound back. 🤷‍♂️

I have also noticed that my buttons don’t react that fast.  I could fly through the buttons much easier if it would not take a full second or two to switch modes or select things.  Is this normal?  I have no one to compare this with.  I had my GPS fixed under warranty and asked to have my screen changed out since it was scratched, in the process they replaced the front panel, I could have swore it worked faster before they put a new one in.  No warranty now.

Maybe a hard restart or factory reset is in order and reinstall the firmware? 🤷‍♂️

  6. When I was in Q meeting up with Lunk he put together a lunch date for us with Pieter!  It was so much fun to hear his stories and he allowed me to pick his brain some too!  It was a great experience and one that I will never forget.  I “analyzed his maps in a different aspect” than how he drew them and shared with Lunk what I was seeing.  Unfortunately I never had the time to test my theories.  Lunk did you ever get a chance to check any out?

  7. I think the pros will be buying this when it first comes out.  They will get it paid off right away.  The noobs and weekend warriors will buy too if just getting into the game, they wont make their money back in gold. The weekend warriors like myself who already bought into the Z will wait and if reviews come back solid we will be buying the used gear for half from the noobs that gave up. 🤣. That’s kind of what I saw with the Z. After the first few years with the Z there was so many used ones for sale and some really cheap. Usually came from people who bought it went metal detecting for like three days and decided it wasn’t for them.  Bonus for us! 🤣🤣

  8. I try to keep it simple when I’m camping too.  Everything is boiling water mixed in a bag LOL. and Nescafe into a cup.  The kind of sucks but it’s like roughing it. I figure when I get back to civilization that’s when I get myself a good Kona French pressed. Now if the wife comes with me camping then I’m like in luxury because she likes doing all that in field, even cleanup and everything else that comes with lux camp life.  🤣🤣

You are old enough to remember inflation Chuck. This pandemic has caused company costs to skyrocket, and most have simply sucked it up. That can’t last, and we (my old company and I - I am on the board of directors) are seeing leading edge indicators of a return to inflation. We watch things like that very carefully due to being in Alaska. The system is being flooded with liquidity at the very same time that supply chains have broken down. This means product in short supply. My shop up north cannot get enough boats, atvs, snowmobiles, you name it. Stores are no longer discounting as a result. Some may even be price gouging on key product. As the pandemic lid comes off, demand goes up even more, but supply chains can’t keep up. Globalization is breaking down, disrupting the smooth flow of labor and goods. Shipping costs are skyrocketing. Get ready for price increases on everything. $50 on a detector is nothing compared to what you will likely see in the near future.

Not a bad time to have some gold or gold stocks in your portfolio.

I like insider info like this!!! Keep it coming!
