So I asked the company that sells this NEL coil to please exchange for a working coil. They said they would. Then they offered a refund. I knew they wouldn't find a coil that worked. So, I went with the SP35. I also got the water proof headphones. I'll get both next week. Meanwhile, they still list the coils for sale for the Simplex+ !! What the heck. Well, if anyone reading this can save themselves the hassle from buying one then I'll be glad. No NEL coils work with the Simplex+. None. Buy somethimg esle. The Detech has a contract with Notka/Makro. They are supposed to work.

What in the world was he thinking?! Jed must have never spent time in the Mountains in winter. And, like you said, a barking dog does a great job for early warning and even makes bears and critters scatter quick! Heck, I'd have at least 2 dogs. Maybe he didn't trust everone on the crew and only said he was staying so he would be the last one out. Then, with everyone gone, he could go get his gold and split. Someone must have somehow followed him. I think he said the gold wasn't far off the road. Maybe he parked his car on the roadside and was found? I guess we'll never know!

Thanks Geotech, What is the lift off effect? Is that when the target disappears when lifting? Thanks for this explanation. I prefer to use the tip to pinpoint. Sometimes find on deeper targets the middle is where the stock coil pinpoints. If I understand correctly, the straight middle construction will give a consistent depth until the tip. For me, that would be ideal. I could therefore, find a target and pull back until the target disappears. The tip would be the pinpoint area, not the middle. I really would prefer this to having a little more depth in the middle. It frustrates me when I think I'm pinpointing on the tip and really, it's in the center. I dig and then pull out the pinpointer. Then I find the target. I would value consistent coverage over one area of depth. So, I looking at the SP35 coil, it too has the straight middle construction. Notice the coil partially shown on the right. It has the wider middle construction and you can see the difference. This confirms my suspicion of the detection area shape if I am understanding you correctly. Thanks, now I'm looking forward to putting this coil to the test. I need something like a broom, a nice even coverage where I feel I'm not missing something unless I overlap all the way to the deepest point of detection. I think that since the sides are not straight as well, there is probably still a curve to the deepest detection area. I'm sure I'm compromising a little depth in the middle, however, the functionality would be better for pinpointing and less need to overlap. We shall see! Once I get it, Ill check it out. TG

I've decided to go with the SP35 after looking at the center construction. The coil is rated at 13.5x12.5. However, they did not do the same thing as the stock coil where the wires cross. So, instead of just 2 inches of coverage center line. It is actually 4" more. Thats about 30% more coverage. And, I noticed that the Notka SP28 original coil had much a better connection. I'm going with Notka/Makro because it's the closest to the Thunder design. And, it is made by the same company as the Simplex+. I will have a real warranty and I trust the build Notka/Makro puts into their products. So, the middle shape maximized the coverage over the stock build style. And, it is actually less expensive too. Here's a shot of them side by side.

I found out today that NEL jumped the gun making coils for the Simplex+. I guess I'll wait for the Detech 15" which I heard is coming out soon. I asked Dilek if Notka/Makro had authorized NEL to make coils for the Simplex+. Here's her response. Dear Tim, The only company we cooperated with is Detech is Bulgaria for 3rd party coils for the Simplex+. NEL has not approached us for any collaboration and thus cannot product coils for the Simplex (or at least coils that would properly work) as they would need to board and the software from us. Yes Steve, having fun with this is what I'm all about. It's my get outside excuse. I know you have the knowledge. It helped me to understand what's happening with the coil. I appreciate it!

I just uderstood another thing from one of the topics you linked Steve. The coils are transformers not antennae. So, the coils must overlap in order to be able to tell when the current from the target reaches equilibrium. I wonder then if it really matters, the small difference between the two middle shapes. Equilibrium for any target is in the middle. I'm sure there's so much more to it. That's what makes this interesting.

I re-read your post Steve. I think what you said is sinking in. I wondered why on a swing in one direction I would get a good number and the other direction I would get something completely wrong. It's the receiving coil side getting it right. That really clears up that question. The target must have been a little deep. Also you mentioned getting coils that do different things or it makes no sense. That is what I'm trying to do. I feel like I'm waving a tiny coil with the 11". The Thunder increases my coverage by 50%. I like that. Also, it's way lighter than the GR40 I was swinging. So, I think I can get more enjoyable time in and cover way more ground. I guess my original question was simply because of the odd straight style of the Thunder. I'm seeing what you are saying though. Its design probably won't matter much. And, it may just be the look that is different and not the performance. This is all actually ok with me. I just wanted a larger coil for the Simplex+. It's always fun to ponder some of the different builds and just ask questions about it. Some forums have lots of folks who speculate and guess. Here though, I can rely on guys with the actual knowledge to share. Thanks again Steve.

Makro Gold Racer GR40 is rated at 15.5" long and has a 14.5" center. And weighs 766grm. Nel Thunder is rated at 14.5" and has no "V" in each end to shorten the center weighs 570. I will test both when I get them. I know, 2 different detectors. I'm only trying to see if there is a difference in the width and shape of the detection area. I really like how much lighter the Thunder is for the same coverage.

Ok Thanks Steve. I get that one side is transmitting and the other is receiving. The thing that I'm not clear on, is the talk about the middle. One shape has the larger middle opening which supposedly gives a larger detection area in the middle. Another narrower opening says its a narrower detection area. So, even though the one side receives, they're saying it's the middle that recieves. That's where I don't get it. Also, yes, the Thunder is the coil I picked for it's length up the middle. I'm not expecting to get any difference in depth. I have the GR40 for the Gold Racer. It's big, I like it and it works well. That's what convinced me to get a larger coil for the Simplex+. However, the Thunder coil had almost the same middle coverage in a smaller lighter coil. The key for me is coverage. The smaller middle opening is a still to be a tested thing. Maybe I'll test both the GR40 and the Thunder to see if there's something different going on. I'm hoping.

This was what I suspected on the detection area. I won't call it a field any more as I now know better! The shape on the left shows a narrower area. This is what I am thinking of the Thundre's area shape. A thinner line which hopefully separates better and has less masking. I find spots with bottle caps, foil and coins. The Simplex+with the 3 tones is great at deciphering what is down there. Just as long as those items are not masked. If indeed it has the thin detection area, this coil may be the ticket!

I see what you mean Steve. I my case, I am not looking for more depth. I am looking for more ground coverage. I'm using it on beaches looking for recent drops. Miles of beach as you know. I am hoping for an even area of detection front to back. If you notice on the Thunder, the center crosses in the very front. The other design actually looses detection length in the middle. The thunder is 14.5 inches in the middle. And, the Simplex+ SP28 stock 11" coil is only about 9" down the middle. I'll be gaining 5" in the middle. That is about a 50% increase in coverage. So, my hope is that it has consistent detection front to back. Also, I believe, having a more narrow center may be better at separation and may be less prone to masking. I'm curious about that. The price was right, and the weight is less than the 13" Notka Makro has for the simplex. I'll give it some testing to see how it works. I had to send it back as it was dead on arrival. They will be checking the next one before shipping. So, I'm waiting...

New readers will be reading this story for years. And, probably re-reading it. Thanks for taking the time to post this Ghost Miner. I know you said it was based on a true gold strike. And the amounts are as close as you can determine from some info you have. That's what makes this interesting. I can imagine myself there and visualize the action and the GOLD. Good stuff Maynard. Still, the scale of the strike and what is done by hand is incredible. It keeps the gold dream alive. Like someone already mentioned. A good read to psyche up for the season!

Great! This info helps. I see it's a transformer rather than an antenna. My question is about the shape of the detection field. For instance, a concentric field is different than a DD field. How the field changes seems to be the shape position of the two windings and the way they overlap. The Thunder coil has 2 straight areas overlapping while the others have a football shaped overlapping area. Some advertising said the larger overlap area gives greator detection area. I'm thinking, the pointed areas top and bottom are then smaller detection areas. Maybe then, the Thunder coil has a consistent size detection area front to back? It mat be that only close targets are affected by the different shapes. I'm just wondering why all coils arent made like the Thunder. It simply seems more logical to make the detecting area consistant. The footbal detection shape is only the largest in the center. Here's photos of these two examples.

Hi all, I just ordered a NEL Thunder coil for my also new Notka Makro Simplex+. This coil has a straight shape center receiving area. Other coils have a football (American type) shaped receiving area. I can't find any discussion on these two types of constructions. Does anyone know what each shape does? Like specifically, bennifits and differences? I can only speculate as I'm not very knowledgeable on this. I am thinking the NEL Thunder may have even sensing front to rear, and maybe narrower field which may be able to separate slightly better. The football shape coils I am thinking, may have a different field shape and may do something different. All this is speculation. However, it is this Thunder coil that is different than most and I'm curious as to what this coil does in it's detection field. For me, the coil has a lighter weight and larger area than other options. I'm searching dry sand and open park areas. Maybe even waist deep water. This shape and size is ideal for me. And the construction is new to me, just so you know. Thanks! TG

Got the scoop out for a test run today. I'm very happy with it. It's doing what I need it to do. The pointed front seems to make digging easy. There is no visible damage, no bent places etc. I can see this scoop lasting years for me. It's sturdy for me. I modded the connections with a single layer wrap of 1" gorilla tape to stop the wobble and it works. That's on the male connecting posts. I put one layer on both ends of each male post connection. I ran 3, 1" wide strips of gorilla tape along the length of the handle to prevent black aluminium stuff on my hands. 3 pieces length wise fit perfectly. I guess some folks have hard packed sand with gravel that need thick pipe scoops. I don't have that so, this fits the job for me. Also, it is fast. I can get past the junk to the goods better than ever now. I did have 3 things drop through about the size of an earing back which I found easily on top of the sand. If I were water hunting I wouldn't bother because I'm looking for coins and rings and pendants etc. so that stuff will absoultly be captured inside. No need for mesh. There you go. That's my experience with the Notka/Makro sand scoop! TG

Hello all, I got the scoop today! I like it. I put it together, took it out to my lawn, and stuck the point in until it stopped then stood on it. The point really helps it penetrate well. No wobble, no bending, no damage what so ever. I'm 6' 190lbs. So, who ever said it's not sturdy, well, I'm sayin' it's plenty sturdy for me. It may not be a pipe with holes in it sturdy, but, it will definitely do what I want it to do. Anything harder to dig in and I'm using my shovel! So, the basket is stainless steel, the handle is aluminium. The frame that holds the handle has a good design. The angles give it strength and its welded to the basket with a continuous weld the entire length. There's zero wobble on the frame/basket junction. It holds the handle well. I could put a 2"pipe on it if I feel like it! There's a little wobble in the handle once snapped together. However, one wrap of 1"wide gorilla tape on each end and it is pretty solid. The handle has 2 snap button things that keep the handle from spinning once in the bucket bracket. I will probably wrap the aluminum handle to keep my hands from getting that black stuff from the aluminum. So, I really just want this for rings. This will get them all. Earings I'm not interested in for a water hunt. I can put some wire mesh inside, but, that would defeat the speed this thing can achieve. It's not very heavy in my opinion. I can't wait to get into water hunting. Now, the snow has to melt and the lake needs to get warm! I think I got a good value for what I got. If you need one strong as a frying pan with holes in it, this isn't that strong. But, it certainly isn't flimsy if I can stand on the back of it and bounce a little on it like I did!

I would sometimes loose interest in a project I was all fired up about. I accidentally found out, after a short break, my enthusiasm would return and I would be ready to give it a go again.
