Iām not hating on Fisher but I checked out the latest Fisher user manual for the AQ (Revision 2)ā¦ā¦thereās about two or three typoās in the first page aloneā¦..could they at least get this bit right by proof reading the layout before publishing. The rest of the manual is littered with mistakesā¦..itās just careless and rushedā¦ā¦thereās a pattern here ššš

Anyone know what changes have been made to the AQ v AQ Ltd?
Ā
I would like to know if Fisher have rectified these issues;- Are they still using Vishay Potentiometers (Rated to IP67)?
- Are the rotary control shafts still attracted to a magnet (they should be stainless steel or solid nylon)?
- Does the noise free frequency selection still drop out between the different modes (after initially locking in the best noise free pulse rate / frequency)?
- Does the delay setting still default back to 7uS after switching the detector off (regardless of where the knob is set)?
- What is the latest firmware on these Ltd units?
- Have they sorted out the metal retaining nut on the coil connector that was causing ānoiseā from saltwater?
- Has the battery pack been upgraded in capacity?
If some or all of these issues are still with the AQ Ltd then Iām not sure that the product is really fit for sale š¤
Would really like to hear back from those in the knowā¦..or maybe even from Fisher

Hope you are well Joeā¦ā¦.I didnāt know there was an upgraded version in the works. I still think the current AQ platform will be a tough sellā¦..even āupgradedāā¦ā¦ I see a lot of daylight between whatās been offered and what should be offered ā¹ļø

Could have been a legendary detector but unfortunately it was poorly engineered in many aspects. I was really hoping that Fisher would relaunch a much improved version instead of letting it wither on the vineā¦..so much R&D, money and time has been sunk into this model that it beggars belief that Fisher can simply let this detector go the graveyard. Who knows, maybe Garrett might step in and do the job properly and put the AQ brain into a beefy waterproof enclosure with two or three beefy controlsā¦ā¦get rid of the complexity with all the controls and settings and keep it powerful and simpleā¦..just like some earlier companies did 20 and 30 years ago š³

Yea, that's weird, as long as you could get military discount of course which doesn't exist in Australia, time to shoot Minelab an email asking why? š

Itās cheaper for me to fly the 10,000 miles to the USA, pick up my new 6000 and then return home than it is to drive the 15 minutes to my local Minelab dealershipā¦..in fact, I would have enough for a few nights in Vegas as well š¤

So in the USA with the 25% discount plus 15% Military discountā¦ā¦.drum roll pleaseā¦ā¦equals about $5500 Aussie dollars š³
Hmmmā¦ā¦.let me see what the cheapest GPX6000 dollars is hereā¦surely it canāt be an extra $2500 š©

I used to use a section of thick closed cell foamā¦ā¦about 12ā x 4ā and it wasnāt a problem to carry around or secure under your belt.

Iāve always used hardwood handles for my water scoopsā¦..cheap and strong. Iāve never broken oneā¦ā¦but I alway do a left to right rocking motion to break the suction and then a quick shake before I even attempt to raise the scoop from the sea floorā¦ā¦a bonus is you wonāt ruin your back as well.

I guess the good part is it opens up the coils to people in markets where they're not easily available.

Thanks Steve,
I wondered what caused that weird formatā¦ā¦caused me all sorts of problems with āJPSā. I only resolved the problem by rotating my iPad from Landscape to Portraitā¦ā¦all by chance of course.

I asked the person who published the comparison between vlf and pi on the beaches why the results of the pi were disappointing, he replied: "A high salt content 8 times higher than that of the ocean kills IP". I think he's talking nonsense, he can't have so much salt on his beach and the vlf also don't like too much salt which destabilizes them.
Plenty detect the vast salt lakes here in Western Australiaā¦.although challenging, the extreme salt can be tamed. As well as the salt there is often a thick heavily mineralised clay/mud to deal with. If thereās that much salt content where heās testing that is 8X typical beach then why bother testing there? A VLF has no advantage over a PI in regard to any salt content. Iām always sceptical on any testing videos š¤

Hi Tony, thank you for this information, I had also read this information on this site, but the problem is that small gold objects are not detected, it's your choice. I read that with a higher delay the devices are more stable but it has the advantage of finding the biggest buried targets more easily.
thank youš
Generally speaking, the larger and higher karat gold targets donāt need a quick delay. Delays of 15uS to 20uS in conjunction with longer pulse widths are ideally suited for these types of targets. The stability you refer to is simply the salt signal decaying away and not being āheardā by longer delays. Yes, the small low conductors are not detected as deep at these settings. I guess if youāre really keen then you could run different settings or detectors over high value beaches. Iāve also noticed that the nice diamonds are nearly always set in higher karat goldā¦.18K and up. Sometimes āless is moreā.

thank you for all this information, only enthusiasts like you or steve allows people like me to learn moreš
This forum has a wealth of information but make sure you satisfy yourself with your needs as far as detectors go. Iām after heavy gold (18K and onwards)ā¦..this stuff sinks fast so you need a high power PI or let Mother Nature do the sand removal for you. I generally prefer pulse delays of 15uS as a minimum or even 20uS (coupled with longer pulse widths)ā¦ā¦.but this is me and some people prefer much faster delays (too much salt signal for me).

Running a GP3500 in āDeepā mode with the 14āDD and a fixed GB will punch deeper than a 5000 in a āSalt Modeāā¦.salt modes will generally cripple depth. Additionally, I never use a US Nickel when assessing PI performanceā¦ā¦I use 18K or higher gold rings. I would like to have seen more of the VLF detectors being swept away from targets to see what sort of falsing there isā¦..Iām sure there would have been some chirps and beeps which would demand the sensitivity be reduced. And finally, when testing, I like blind tests where the operator has no idea where targets are buried and none of this sweeping back and forth over targetsā¦ā¦unrealistic testing in that regard. To me, itās just another staged testā¦ā¦but better than most. Yeah, Iām a harsh critic but ātestingā must match typical āhuntingā to truly get a feel for detector performance. Steve is spot on when he talks about the VLF v PI in nice white coral sand being fairly comparable but detectors such as the SD/GP have an ability to really punch to the next level (even in these benign conditions) by brute forceā¦.Amperage to the coil and āpowerā pulse timings.

Just do a quick search on āGP3500ā and thereās plenty to read aboutā¦..Iām already a bit off topic.

I did (and still do) what Steve did many years ago and use a GP3500 on the beach. My coil of choice is the Coiltek 14ā DD and a lightweight 6v Lithium battery. If EMI isnāt too bad then the 14ā Mono goes on. Two silicone end covers keeps it very well sealed from salt and sandā¦ā¦itās the deepest setup Iāve ever used and Iām confident would surpass the Fisher AQ in all of the lower beach and hard pan. Basic iron discrimination to several inches takes care of the bobby pins and fish hooks. Itās a formidable setup as the coil is drawing 0.75A.

I can thoroughly recommend Mick at Detectronics. His work is of a very high standard. He repairs most Minelab PI detectors and provides excellent modifications as well. Heās regarded as the āGold Standardā.

I donāt recall really noticing a difference in behavior with different delay settings.
I find that noticeable delay settings are probably in the order of around the 5uS markā¦ā¦that is to say, a delay of 15uS is fairly distinct from a delay of 10uS but a delay of 10uS v 13uS may sound about the same. With the extremely limited delay range of the AQ then Iām not surprised by your impressions and it would appear that the first 180 degrees of rotation of the delay knob doesnāt really do much at all in regards to āuseful audioā.

I donāt find much in calm waterā¦ā¦.pretty sure that the sand has had time to settle and bury the gold. I have one of those neoprene headbands which works well in securing the phones or use the bone-phone (Sea Hunter) if itās not too windy.Ā
I like to sit behind the 2-3 foot breakers and then duck in behind the whitewaterā¦ā¦..with one eye on whatās coming in next šThe āimpact zoneā is where the gold isā¦..either lost there directly from swimmers or moved/uncovered there by Mother Nature.
Love itā¦ā¦have that area to myself as no one else is crazy as me. The Noxās get munched up as well and leak from water impact š
