Deft Tones

The old faithfull patch where I found the 2 cent coin is still giving up the odd piece of silver jewelry and silver coins and wheats now and then, plus junk jewelry. Some of these rings and pins come from the school patch I work a few times in the evenings. Today I hit a four star park I never hunted before but have been eyeballing for a few years, so couple pieces from there in the picture. I took photos of that hunt because it was a scouting mission with good results. I'll post about it when I get more time.

Not much remarkable, IMO. No gold yet...  worst drought yet. 

Silencer filter kills depth. It also causes loss of subtle tone variations when in full tones mode.  I always keep it off unless I forget while making changes on the fly.

And yes, it is super annoying XP couldn't divorce the reactivity settings from the silencer filters.

5 gallon bucket and a toilet seat always worked for me.

Yours is a bit heavier to carry but looks more stable.

I see a new product to market, The Prospector Potty. 

And if passive agressiveness doesn't work turn it up a notch with direct threats.

I happened to see that thread and your post. GaryB posted 24 hours earlier in the same thread. When I went back to see what reply you'd gotten I couldn't find the thread - the French have a reputation of thin skin for some reason. 

In school I studied marketing with an eye towards advertising graphic design, and I never have seen a marketing cluster-fugggh like I've seen out of XP with this 4.0/Hardware fiasco. For students it would make a great study in what not to do from a marketing perspective. Trickle down information heard through the grapevine...

The 8x6 SEF weighs 390 grams with scuff cover.

Amazing that the 4x6 sharpshooter is only 35 grams lighter and the 6" 5.3 concentric is 27 grams heavier.

I find it odd there was no mention of sound card performance and testing. I would think results would vary based upon the make and model sound card/drivers installed because that's what we're plugging our headphones into. Pretty key link in the chain, IMO.

Yes. I use bridges as a good plot point as they generally stay the same over time while many creeks/rivers change course badly in my area....plus they were some of the first practical improvements as people settled westward.

We pretty much do it the same way with historicaerials checking changes in features.

Speaking of old topo's...

I've been using this android app since last year and it works great.

For locating cellar holes from old topo maps it's a dream.

Basically you overlay your topo on a google map, plot some reference points, and the topo is rectified to a modern map with GPS ability. The more reference plots you create the more accurate the rectification. Works with hand drawn maps too. I've ran it at four different sites and it's really very good.

IMO, it's the best thing out there to simplify our searches. Do yourself a favor and try it.

All I can offer is the 8x6 Detech SEF gives up a bit of coverage, but has great depth and is very light. It is my favorite coil in moderate to high trash when conditions allow for an open coil design. If I'm poking around, in and through bushes and scrub, or otherwise can't swing laterally... I choose the 6" concentric Eclipse. (That cork could use a makeover too, but keep it closed, please!)

That said, I'm looking forward to whatever coils come to market for the V3i.

I so wish I had more varied detecting locations. Unfoutunately when I want to change it up I'm pretty much left with parks, private residences, or farm land.

There is only one public beach in my area that is not State owned and under State restrictions... and that one beach is completely pounded by everyone multiple times a month, at least.

Wish there were nuggets in our soil. We've flour gold but nothing detectable with our machines.

I was really hoping while he took the time to examine it. Maybe it will improve enough by soaking for him to ID. I found out this coin is the first time a reference to God was part of the design on U.S. currency...that's what I read, anyway.

Took the Deus to my beaten jewelry patch at a park and decided to relic hunt for deep squeakers instead. There used to be a farmstead on the land and a road bisecting the park...both long gone. Hunting slowly 18khz, 0 discrim, silencer -1, reactivity 3, notch 0-38, I caught a signal nearly at the edge of detection. Two directions two different tones and faint. Pinpointing was difficult wiggling-off. I switched to 8khz, and dropped reactivity to see what's up, something I don't normally do. Loud and clear two directions two different tones...hmmmm?

Stabbing into the soil I'm stopped dead at 1-2 inches by a hard object. Move 90 degrees, damn, same thing. On the fourth stinking try I see a brick and think, I'm not digging that up it'll leave a crater, but the pinpointer is flipping out saying dig. I found another brick below that one and both bricks sat at 45 with the signal coming between them. Stabbing between the bricks with just enough space for my screwdriver it's a wonder I didn't scratch it as I was kind of wildly flicking soil out.

Must have been near 7 to 8 inches and it was on a 45 degree angle.

I didn't even know what it was except United States and a number 2. I knew it was my oldest coin found though. I've hit a few silver dimes and several Indian cents in this unasuming park but never did I think it would give up a coin like that.

I've taken it to a coin dealer and he says it's too worn to ID the variety and to soak it in oil...where it still sits.

Jewelry section needs more posts. I can do that. Nothing spectacular, but he coolest thing about this post is that the lead panned out for once. 

I was reading some vendor reviews for an event that recently took place, an arts and crafts show, when a participant mentioned sudden high winds and a storm caused some damage. Bemoaning their's and a few other's losses got me to thinking about checking it out. So after a bit of planning I set out to search over the area and see what was left behind . It was pretty clean ground, and after three different two hour nights with occasional clad and foil, I hit onto this 7 foot area with scattered jewelry. A watch, then earring, then ring. By the third score I was so excited! Surface finds right at the base of the grass for easy picking. Whoo hooo! Cha-ching! I went home on air. Was a hell of a good time.

After cleaning them up in my early Father's day gift that my boys couldn't wait to tell me about , an ultrasonic cleaner.... every one is junk. 

Here is my face as that progressed.     The gold drought continues... thanks for nothing you cheap, starving artists! I was so bummed I took almost 5 days off from detecting instead working around the house and just cleaning past finds I don't want to tumble as I sorted them out of the buckets. Put me in a detecting funk, but we're out now. New quarter has begun!

The time is near... I can smell that gold! Come to papa!

My scale that's more accurate and goes to 100th of a gram maxes out at 550grams and it's too small in size, so I can't use it to measure unfortunately.

Rereading the two measurements given prior.... I'll triple check this afternoon. That's a wide spred!

Of course, and if the ears are slightly off center a guy still has two mounting options by turning it 180 degrees

Why not extend the length of the mounting ears and provide two or more holes?

Whoever redesigned the coil, good job, let them have a stab at the V3i and give it a similar makeover.

Visually, it's a refreshing look that has me excited that perhaps that someone is already hard at work and on it!
