  1. While magnets might work for a slight amount of ironsand they won't work where we will be dredging. We have tens of kilos of the stuff to deal with.
  2. Hi there, Has anyone had any experience with suction dredging in rivers with fine gold and a lot of iron sand / black sand (say up to 10% of gravel which passes through the sluice). I'm considering the use of hydraulic riffles but can't find any data in regards to relative gain in recovery versus a standard keene triple type sluice box. I realise this is a very complex issue as a lot of factors affect the recovery of gold but it would be good to hear from someone who's had some practical experience. Pictures of the gold at the location.
  3. I have a spot in a creek where is found a 35g nugget on my first visit. There is no written history of gold specifically in this creek but the surrounding area is gold bearing. Have never managed to find anything else there...
  4. Hey folks, I met up with a few friends on boxing day and headed into the wilderness to try and find some gold. After a hike into the location and setting up camp I headed off with my sniping gear to find my fortune, about 10.30am. By 1pm I had about a gram and a half in small pieces from a range of crevices. At this point I had a short break and considered my options. I chose a good looking crevice which cut across the river and had a good bedrock / current arrangement. After removing a little of the gravel which covered most of the crevice I spotted a couple of of slightly chunkier bits than what I’d got earlier. Well, shortly after this the crevice really pu on a show and in the following 1.5hours I found some fantastic gold. I ended up with 29.6g for the 4.5hrs I’d spent in the creek. This is pretty up there in terms of total gold Iver personally found in a day.
  5. Some more yellow stuff today. This time from a different area. 13.4g, biggest piece is 3.1g.
  6. Certainly one of the better days we've had lately. Bring on summer!
  7. Hi there, It was fathers day recently here in New Zealand and as my wife and I have a habit of getting a day to do what we wish on mothers / fathers day I chose to go detecting. Area of choice this time was a somewhat remote but relatively well detected area. As I'd only fairly recently (in the last year) come to get to grips with my equinox 800 I thought I might be able to produce something with it. My good friend accompanied me on this trip and when we arrived to our chosen river after a 3hr journey from home he set about sniping in a bedrock area where we'd found some gold previously. I also had a bit of a snipe but it wasn't too far above freezing so I decided to go detecting. If found about 4 micro nuggets / flakes in the first 10 minutes. Then I crossed the river to the next area of bedrock and got another small piece in a crevice that led under some gravel and boulders in a likely drop on bedrock. I decided on a hunch to clear a little of this material off the crevice and detected it again. Another target was uncovered straight away. This target actually was the start of a concentration of a few dozen tiny pieces along a 1m long shallow crevice. Took me a couple of hours to get get it all out. Thi is what I got from there, maybe 6 grams. After the success from that crevice I found another similar bedrock situation close by and got another couple of grams or so from that. This was a lot more than my friend found sniping in the same time, and I was warm and dry! The rest of the day we sniped and detected various areas and the equinox steadily found small flakey nuggets and my friend got some slightly larger bits and pieces from his sniping. All in all a very enjoyable father's day with a respectable total of 14.9g between us for the day
  8. I spend a lot of my time looking for gold in rivers and streams, I call a sunbaker anything thing that is immediately visible as it is naturally positioned, without covering of gravels. Even if it is a meter under water.
  9. Thanks for taking the time to bring us these great stories from around the world. I hope you get the chance to produce more of them!
  10. Looks like some serious weight in those specimens! Do you have any more pictures of the largest one? Looks like it's richly studded with gold
  11. Yes indeed, my trusty old gold bug. About 10 years old now...
  12. Thanks Simon, I figure it's only fair for me to post about my outings. I know I only manage to get through the time between gold hunting trips by living vicariously through reading other people's stories! The creek has both rugged and more gentle parts. But it has plenty of boulders, hence my friend recently bought a 3.5t mean mother which!
  13. So I managed to squeeze in another half day outing to my spot up in the mountains. More digging and moving boulders uncovered another 3 pieces of gold for 1.5g. The larger piece is 1g and is quite coarse / rough for this area. The black material is slowly being dissolved by hydrochloric acid. The first photo shows the creek. A little bit of water with a lot of boulders. Historically this creek has produced nuggets up to 12oz, I'm sure under one of the boulders there will be one for me. Will probably be a month before I get time for another look. I'm trying to finish building my house extension in my spare time and my two young daughters keep my busy....
  14. I've had a standard Fisher gold bug for close to 10 years I've used this for a bit of coin hunting but mostly gold detecting. Has paid for itself many times over. Have also had a minelab sovereign and excalibur 2 that have well and truly paid for themselves. I Bought a second hand minelab SD2200D couple of years ago, that's still in the process of being paid for. I think it comes down more to how much treasure there is to find in your area than what detector you use... Up to a point.
  15. Frinds willing to help... For an equal share of the gold! Going again in a few days. Hope the have more to report. Happy New year's eve!
  16. John, looks like you do your exercise getting to and from the gold! I do mine digging for the gold. Admittedly while my gold is generally a little bigger than what you find now, you win for overall weight as you seem to go out more consistently pull some grams.
  17. Thanks John, hope you're having a good holiday break too. As you can see in the photo we're hard at work digging and winching boulders. Perhaps if you got into some of that you'd find multi gram nuggets again! But it's terribly hard work!
  18. Found with gold bug and equinox. But either detector could have found these. It's easy once the bedrock is cleared.
  19. Here are two photos of gold found over the last two trips. This gold was found by removing the gravel in the steam bed and exposing the bedrock. The bedrock was then detected. On both trips several of my gold hunting friends came along. The bigger nugget was 5g and very tricky to recover. Lodged deeply in a crevice under white water. The other pieces total 1.3g. I hope to have time for one more outing before I have to go back to work. I'll keep you posted. Merry Christmas!
  20. Thanks for your comments guys. I've promised myself that once I've found enough gold to cover the cost of this detector and coils I'll upgrade to a later model PI. Or a dredge...
  21. Finding gold is like drugs, and I quote - I used ta do a little but a little wouldn't do it So the little got more and more... Simon, cold is just subjective!
  22. So today I decided to take my old SD2200D coupled to my 17x10 coiltek mini ufo coil up a local creek that I has been very heavily detected. I also took along my Fisher gold bug with its 5 inch coil. My plan was to walk right up this creek detecting with the SD on the way up and then the gold bug on the way down. We have not had any decent flooding for a looooong time so any exposed bedrock has seen multiple coils by now. My plan was to target deeper areas with the Sd and then try to find some missed crumbs with the gold bug. So long story short I got a 0.6g and a 1.2g piece. Both were on the edge of bedrock areas where deeper gravels start. Having not had the sd and it's selection of large coils that long I was surprised at the comparatively small pieces it was able to detect.(when compared to the massive coil). I ran out of time to use the gold bug much but I've used it a lot in this area before so wasn't expecting much. Thanks for looking!
  23. Delnorter, I think I will dig the crevice next time I'm up there. I'll buy a good winch for the boulders. The unknowns with the crevice are a, will it continue for any useful length into the bank and b, will there be gold. Both questions can only be answered one way. And matt, yes the gold has very nice character.
  24. Had an outing with a good friend to a Local creek yesterday. We dug a huge hole and moved some big boulders and found the 1.3g right at the start of the process. Diligent detecting elsewhere in the creek produced the other two. The 1.7g was right at the start of a crevice that seems to run under a virgin bank... Might dig that out some time but there are some fridge size boulders in the way. Cheers for the fun day out buddy.
  25. Hi there, has anyone here used geophysical surveys to define a buried river chanel?
