  1. I have not seen those, so are they not reusable then ? Mine last for a couple of hours, the cheap ones only last for less than an hour. John.
  2. Those XT Heat packs I bought would burn your wrists, they get well over 130*f, I had a bad shoulder earlier this year and I used one but I had to wrap it up in a towel because they just get too hot. It's getting colder here next week so winter is on it's way, John.
  3. Nome has to be one of the coldest places on earth on a regular bases and Fairbanks is not any better, Many must of died in the Gold Rush days not having the gear we have now, Poor devils, No detectors, basic transport, simple clothing and the list goes on, I got seriously cold where I nearly lost my fingers back in the late 70's early 80's and I vowed that that would never happen again, I couldn't even remove my gloves, A couple of years back I hit a good patch where the finds were thick and fast at a Victorian country House/Mansion and I had been outside for about 12/14 hours and I was covered in frost and Ice when I walked in the back door, It's very easy to loose track of time and the dangers you face when detecting in bad climate conditions, Since then I always take a good Stanley Flask with me and take a break every 3 hours or so, I just did a review of about a Dozen of Stanley's Flask's over on PA, because Stanley released a new super heavy duty range this year and they are Awesome, and I found which of their products are top performers too. Having this gear makes winter detecting much more enjoyable that's for sure. John.
  4. Thanks mate, I must admit I did go OTT but that was out of frustration, That North face Parka cost me about $500 US and although it is very warm the tight sleeves and the mega Hood failure drove me to buying the Snow Mantra, The factory rate it at -30 to -70*f and it is well known as the warmest coat on earth, but I won't wear it above 10* to 20*f because it is extremely warm, I have dozens of extreme cold weather clothing links, Here is another good one, https://commonsensehome.com/best-cold-weather-clothing/ Here is another Very good useful link about Gloves, https://andy-kirkpatrick.com/articles/view/the_truth_about_gloves This Wind Chill Chart is worth saving because although a lot of coats boots etc have extreme ratings throw in a bit of wind velocity and it doesn't take much to reach those limits.
  5. LOL, Funny this subject has come up I just bought 3 sets of long johns, I tried those cheap chemical hand warmer where you click a disc inside it and they get hot, Well one of them died after being used once leaving me with 3 left just to annoy me, So earlier this year I bought 8 of the Larger Heat Wave versions Made in the U.S.A. I think these people are the company who came up with the Idea, But I bought these because my CG Parka has pockets near the Kidney area so you can fit hand warmers to protect vital areas, It should of come with them but for some reason it didn't I have some Very serious Cold Weather gear, I have The Alaskan Extreme Cold weather parka by Alpha which is tougher and stiffer than the Nylon Parka's they make, and then I bought the North Face McMurdo Parka, It's a great coat but does not allow for layering up in the arms and the wind blasts through the gaps between the fixings and the Fake fur ruff, So I threw down the Gauntlet and bought a Canada Goose Military version ( Navy Blue ) of their Snow Mantra Parka, the Snow Mantra costs about £1275.00 over here but I got mine a lot cheaper but it is a Bear of a Coat, Getting fed up with cold feet I bought a pair of boots that are just way way OTT, I bought the Baffin Impact's rated to -148*f/-100*c lol, I imported the Boots from the USA from this company and I think they are the best place to buy from and they were quicker and cheaper than any where else, Excellent people to deal with and they have a massive range of boots. https://winterboots.com/baffin-impact-black-mens-extreme-winter-boots.html Anyways, get your self some thin fleece gloves and then buy a set of thinsulate cheap skiing type gloves, that way the air gets trapped in between the layers, the good thing about thinsulate is that when it gets wet it will still keep you warm where as Down will not, and DO NOT buy waterproof gloves because the Sweat can not get out and it will freeze causing you frostbite, where as non waterproof gloves are breathable and even though they get wet they will dry out and keep you warm. Hope this helps, John. http://www.medicalsuppliesmarket.com/item/5503521/ This will cover most of what you want to know, http://www.coolantarctica.com/Antarctica fact file/science/clothing_in_antarcticaUK.php
  6. The 6x4 DD Shooter Is ok for grubbing about in bed rock if the targets are shallow but the 5.3 ( 6" ) Concentric has about twice the depth and in an air test what the 6x4 see's at 1 inch the 5.3 will see at 3" and it will see bits that the 6x4 won't see, It will see bits weighing as small as 0.003grams OR 0.046 grains when you turn it right up on the surface and bits about 0.006 grams OR 0.092 grains from about an inch or so on the surface. hope that helps, John. EDIT:- To be honest it is the performance of the 5.3 and the 12"/300 coils that really excel on the MXT series. The 5.3 is hot on tiny targets and handles fairly hot ground and the 12"/300 for good average depth, I know of someone hit a 1oz nugget at over 18" using the 12" Coil.
  7. Either way without the history lesson there is still a heck of a lot of junk in the ground and it was around 800 BC.
  8. Anyone who uses a GM over here is due south of crazy, the old iron particles in the ground from the last 4 or 5000 years would drive you nuts, But good on them for being brave, That's a great result from the GM, J.
  9. Well GB what proved the high Gain issue to me, was me and a Mate were both using MXT's with the 12" coils, I was running mine just on the edge of the 10+ area remembering that the MXT's dial goes up to 10+3 and he was running his in the 6.5 to 6.7 yet he was digging them large English Penny's at over 13"and a half inches where all my finds were between 5 to 10" range and I put that down to the fact that I was Blasting ALL targets good and bad where he was just feeling his way through to each of the good targets, Another thing to remember is running 2 high powered identical machines with big coils don't play well together because we could hear each others machine approaching from a long way away when the Gain is up around the 10+ area because they will cross talk from well over 2 to 300 feet away starting with a soft pulsing sound and then ending up sounding like a V8 with a couple of plug leads off, So there is a lot to be said for running lower gain settings, hope this helps, John.
  10. I think you did well to find those bits, So many people just have to run their machines flat out, Dropping the Gain down like that allowed the machine to see what is in the ground, Under a lot of conditions using high gain can be likened to driving in the Fog using high beam which in effect Blinds the detector, Lowering the gain might not provide maximum depth but it will unmask targets giving the detector a chance to see, Knowing when and where to do that is a Skill that many detectorists lack, So well done, thanks for posting. John.
  11. I agree with what someone said earlier about it not quite being sensitive enough for small gold, because quite a few machines will see your bare hand at 4 to 6 inches yet you are only getting 2 or 3 inches on the nuggets with no signal from your hand, Where it is really impressive is how it compares to the AT Pro, It is still a very worthy machine and Garretts have always been solid performers. John.
  12. It seems much better than the AT pro but it equal to most other brands on some targets.
  13. Ok then Delete my post if it offends the morals of the forum.
  14. Ok that's fine, I am not asking anyone to believe it, It only maters to those who were there, Here is a video of how DD's create target masking using a mid priced detector compared to a Childs $100 dollar Toy detector, that shows Iron nails above a coin, but you need to watch it all. J.
  15. If Tom's way works for you then that's all that matters, quite frankly I think that taking a PI in to a junk filled site first is crazy because a person could be stuck cleaning a 20 x 20 area for days on end while others are zipping around you making finds by the dozen. The Goldbug Pro is another very clever machine and what it lacks in depth it makes up for in other things. J.
  16. And I think it was either The Tesoro Silver Sabre or the Silver Umax, But it was called the Silver something and it rang clear as a bell J.
  17. I posted a video here about a month or two back where one cheap machine was unmasking targets that were on different plains, Tom is a very skilled detectorist, But as detectorists we all tend to copy the Norm and what others say, That is not what makes finds, In junk filled sites the norm is to use a small coil and a fast machine, and then we here people saying that sites have dried up, If I had done what everyone else does I would have never of found the Gold and all the Coins that everyone had missed since 1967 in an area that had seen every detector made since that date due to the Area being a Test site and has been victim to hundreds of rallies ever since, A good single frequency machine will clear out all the good stuff from a junk filled site when you use both large and small coils, once the targets are beyond the depth of a VLF then that is the time to use a PI, If you do what you and Tom say then you will have 10x more targets to dig and using a PI is hard work even in a clean site, But by using the machines in the right order will remove many targets allowing you to hear the much fainter targets and ignoring the loud over loaded signals because the VLF would have already told you that they were junk. Doing what other do will just give you the same results as they got, But if you want to make good finds nower days you need to think out of the box and Do what others are Not Doing. As for unmasking we already have technology that can do that, It is just that not enough people know it or know how to do it, This is more about the skill and knowledge of the user and picking the right machine, where some folks get suckered in to buying a certain machine by mate and companies they automatically insist they have the best machine just because they pay top dollar for it, J.
  18. Well there are a lot of fast machines out there but I think the F-75 is about as fast as you need, Speed has it's place and the F-75 in Deep is a good combo to, I think that anything faster than the F-75 is just not needed. J.
  19. Or you could use a single frequency machine with a fast recovery and get 99% of the finds and the use a PI like the TDI's and only dig either low or high conductive targets. J.
  20. That's a great video, thanks for posting it, Another reason I sold my E-trac was that it would give you multiple ID numbers where I could get up to 7 or 8 sets of numbers and it would do the same in air tests too so there was no way could I get a baseline of what those target ID's should be, I took it and my other machine that was fitted with a 12" concentric, the ETrac ID'd 3 coins correctly and it ID'd 7 or 8 coins as junk, my other machine only got 2 or 3 targets wrong, Then came the Fine Gold chain test and it just could see them regardless of what coil was fitted, This new 800 appears to be a breath of fresh air in that respect, I would be happy even if it just had one frequency as long as it was fast and did not let me walk over targets, J.
  21. I like how he starts showing off the size of his arms and the next thing he does is complain about the weight of the TDI Pro, LOL.
  22. I agree my pet hate about BBS/FBS is the way they blank when they pass over an Iron target and they don't switch one until the coil is well past it and then any good targets in close proximity are lost for good, BBS is the worst of the two, because even though the Sovereign GT has an Iron mask switch with on and off positions that Iron mask is still running in the background so you can't disable it even in the off position, And when you sweep over an Iron target it nulls but if there is more than one Iron target in the ground the Threshold may not return until you have made many sweeps of the coil and only seeing side by side testing made me realise just how many Good targets I was missing and both types lack sensitivity of Single frequency machines to tiny Items and nuggets. This was the main reason for me changing brands, But if Minelab would have had a fast machine like this back then I would still be using them. John.
  23. All Gold is Beautiful, And the story about the finder and the finding gives me the biggest kick, Going out on a Limb here, But a good story even tops a good beer, well almost J.
  24. depending on your GND Numbers in the right meter the depth can vary, If the numbers are higher it makes the machine a lot hotter but if the numbers are high means you have a lot of mineralization which then reduces the machines abilities to see the target, So it's a fine line in getting the Balance right. Maybe you should try the test again on this time try and run the SAT as low as possible and run the Gain up high as possible that will increase the depth, because when you run the MXT and the GMT up in the Hyper SAT range it can dramatically reduce the depth of the machine, The Ideal setting is for High Gain and the lowest possible SAT speed without loosing your threshold, The Hyper SAT area on the MXT and the High SAT speed on the GMT is only for use in Hot Ground and if you run the machines up in that range it can cost you up to a 1/3 of your depth so try to resist maxing out the SAT, hope that helps, John.
