  1. Hey everyone...

    I've had my Nox for approx 10 months now and have approx 200 hours on it.

    I'm getting more comfortable with its various modes and have fallen into a good groove with the machine. I've done well with it in great finds.

    The area that I'm weak on is single frequencies because I have not given them a chance to prove whether it is even worth it to hunt in those modes.

    My questions are... When do you use 5kz or 10kz? Trashy or moderate trash sites? Do you use single just to cross reference a signal against multi frequency?

    Has anyone dug anything significantly better in single vs multi? Has anyone been impressed at what single frequency can do vs multi?

    Note: For the most part I hunt trashy sites with relic/jewelry/coin mix. At the parks I simply put it on Park 1 or 2 and do not think about single frequency. But when in lot sites, and I'm running into lots of trash, I wonder how the single frequencies will work for me. Or better yet... what should it be doing for me that's better than multi?

    Any feedback is appreciated.

    This is interesting and it isn't the first time this topic has arisen on this forum.  When I read it previously I figured I was doing something suboptimally, such as not centering the coil on the target.  But since then I've concentrated more on that and I still get 11's and 14's on some nickels.  I also sometimes get iron grunts which is unusual for targets in this range, nickels or otherwise.  My rough estimate is that nickels within about 3 inches of the surface do give the tight 12-13 but deeper than that they start to spread out a bit.

    Assuming I am getting the coil centered then a few other possibilities for the TID spread I'm experiencing are:  nearby target interference,  different detector settings, lower signal to noise (where 'signal' means the nickel target and 'noise' is the ground), and even variations in detector performance.  (Blaming the detector is too often a spurious excuse, IMO, so I tend to downplay that possibility until all others are eliminated.  OTOH, it could be an issue, I suppose.)

    FWIW, the majority (over 90%) of my Equinox coin hunting to date has been in Park 1 with ground grab and five custom tones, but I have varied some of the parameters such as recovery speed (sometimes 6, sometimes 5), and iron bias (anywhere from 0 to 4).  I have yet to notice any tightening/broadening of the nickel TID signals, however, regardless of settings.

    Yes GB.... this is why I focus on the range of 11 to 14. The niks can come anywhere between those numbers both deep and shallow. If I have a deep 14 or 11 signal, I'm digging. 12/13 signals show up the most but you have to work in that 11 to 14 range nonetheless. By the way, I get a lot of old spoons too in that range. Yesterday, I dug a large One Shilling at a bouncy 14. This TID range has given me some good finds aside from the silvers and wheats.

    That’s a crazy number of Jefferson’s!  The parks I hunt have very little clad so my New/Old nickel ration is very   very low. The old Nickels are deep so I’m guessing a lot of guys miss them.

    Curious how often your Nickels come in at 11 and 14.  My Nickels hang so tight to 12-13 I finally stopped digging the 11s and 14s unless it’s real deep. Got tired of digging beaver tails.

    I really like your gold ring. Looks pretty old. The Buddha is cool too!

    My nickels come in a range of 11 - 14 with 12/13 the dominant number. Out of all those nickels, maybe a few came in at 11/12 or 13/14, but the majority toggled back and forth within those 4 numbers but 12/13 was the steady and consistent numbers.

  4. Hey Everyone...

    Several months ago, I started honing in on nickel signals (Nox600 - 11,12,13,14) in addition to my high conductors and glad I did. I am digging more good finds at the mid tones. Check this out...

    Here are 307 nickels that I dug over past several months. I read somewhere that the averages are approx 200-250 nickels dug for each buff. Didn't mention V's or gold...only buffs.

    I guess I beat the averages... 307 nickels = 3 buffs, 3 v's, 1 war nickel, 1 18k gold ring and 1 gold buddha pendant... not bad huh?

    I didn't dig as much silver this year, cuz I only spent half the amount of time in the field from last year. Overall, adding nickel signals to my goals really kicked it up a notch.

    Merry Christmas everyone !!!

  5. GB;

    My primary settings when I hunt in Park 1 (I rarely use P2, F1&2 or beach)

    Heavy/crowded signals/targets/trash;

    • multi
    • 50 tones
    • zero GB & Thrshld & IB (I rarely have to GB)
    • Sens 20-22
    • disc out 1-10 and 14-17 (leave nickel sigs 11,12,13 open and all high co 18+)

    Light to moderate signals/targets;

    • same settings above
    • all metal mode

    Since I have been using these settings with a keen awareness to nickel signals, I have dug up 2 nice gold pieces...an 18K ring and gold buddha pendant.

    Hey I used to live down that way. What are the rules/laws in LA regarding detecting? I would figure they would be pretty strict.

    No one bothers me in the Los Angeles city or county parks. In fact, Parks & Rec staff will talk to you and give you ideas on where to go. Park Rangers & P.D. does not bother you either. They pretty much waive back at you if you initiate the gesture. But.... all said, I'm seeing a lot of uncovered plugs which will ultimately change things for us in the future. I think some MD'ers take advantage of lax policies and couldn't care one way or the other. We must change this attitude.

  7. Hey everyone,

    I get out on Sundays. Some half days and some full days. Half days you don't get much except a lot of clad, and full days you will work your butt off literally, for a few worth mentioning finds.

    You really gotta work these parks. You have to find areas where there aren't crowds so driving around finding that right spot takes time from your day. Leaving the house at 6am or earlier is the norm for me.

    I'm still on a buffalo/V nickel quest and averaging 20 -30 nickels per hunt. Got a buffalo this past Sunday, 2 silver dimes and a few wheats. I come home dirty/sweaty due to the heat but I'm liking every minute of it.

    I hope everyone had a great weekend hunt.

  8. Interesting statement. I skimmed over it because it is a long video. I'll have to watch it in it's entirety.

    Would he be referring to the faint warble sounds, among others?  Or is this something you all hear anyways?

    Yesterday I hit a small area of a good sized park in Los Angeles. This area (approx 50x30) under an old huge tree has been pounded to death by everyone for decades, including myself with my Safari. Yesterday, I managed to pull out 8 wheats and a '56 Rosie. I was surprised they were still there.

    I analyzed every signal my coil passed and found that in between all the junk targets were very faint warble high tones most would miss if you moved too fast. I mean, I really had to manipulate the coil in every direction to bring those signals to the surface, so-to-speak.  I pushed every inch of my lesche shovel into the ground and found these coins below. I noticed that a couple were on edge (stuck to the sidewalls) and  maybe the reason for the warble.
