It's not that we need headphones to make things louder, it's to keep the other sounds from detracting from the "good" signals from the detector.

Do talk to a surveyor/engineer and the county planning department. Many things can come up with what you are talking about........ archaeological study, cultural study, EIR, traffic studies, wells, septic/sewer systems, road construction(even improving existing roads), school taxes. Many public meetings. Lots of fees. I was a licensed surveyor for 35 years and worked with a civil engineer for 15 years prior to getting my license so I speak from experience.

I found 3 pickers in about 20 minutes with mine first time out...... Then I sold it! A fellow I know talked me into selling it to him(he wanted it bad) I figured I would get another when I needed it. I continue finding gold with the GB 2 and ATX so don't need it yet. One of my sons has the Gold Racer. Developed problems with the static through the headphones. Contacted Makro and they sent him another.....Didn't even ask for the old one back.

Well, I left it in for a week and quartz turned yellow. I wonder how much quartz it would eat in a month?

If you soak it too long, the quartz that does not loosen may turn yellow. not very attractive.

Sounds like a good trip even with no gold. I know what you mean about a "bear burrito", I had a bear walk on me one night while in a mummy bag.

Butane was to last 12 hours but only lasted 8. Pads burned up faster. Still got bit by a few mosquitos. Advise was to still use other protection in addition to Thermacell.

It depends on how you protect/hide it and who knows where it is. I knew an old timer who slept with 80 pounds(yes, pounds!) of gold under his bed. I think I was one of two people that he told where it was. As it was, he had a family friend(the other person) talk him into "safekeeping" it for him once when he got ill. When he got well, she wouldn't give it back to him! She said she had a lot of debt and needed it.( he said she was a gambler) He was a little upset (I would have been more than that) but just said..."Oh well, the fun was in finding it" Moral of the story is, you can lock it up or just "sleep on it" and still lose it.

So, Matt, what does the finished product look like?

It's quite obvious that most of you only search for or expect to only find clad coins. It is most important to use a probe that won't damage a good coin like rare dates or gold coins. Once probed and located, you know where to dig. Never "pop them with a screwdriver" unless you are just collecting them to pay for fresh batteries. Of course, if the situation dictates, use a shovel and give it plenty of room.

The Gold Bug 2 will work until you get to the wet sand... then forget it. I just break out my trusty Minelab Sovereign (17 frequencies)

Don't glue the legs in. I found that after time, the pvc will start bending due to the angle. It wasn't a trommel, but a highbanker. Same situation though.

I agree, that those options might be nice. Fleng should get plenty of practice with his detector prior to going. Nothing like buying a detector with a "learning curve" that takes days or weeks to overcome and not have the time when you get there to learn it.

Doesn't matter if you are 25 feet or 200 feet, it will still be dark. But, no need for a screen. I've detected plenty of lode gold with the GB2 in the dark.... well, not really in the dark because nobody detects underground in the dark. I always have a light......
