This winter I did a lot of climbing the hills. Sometimes it pays off good..... The fellow I sold this nice find to made this Youtube of it... Hope you enjoy it.

Steve, I had to laugh when I saw the thread. Last year both of my boys(I say boys but they are grown men) went elk hunting with me. One of the boys said "I'm not squatting" and came up with this idea"

I would have been a veteran but I couldn't pass the physical.......

Goldbrick.... from above: "I've taken it to a coin dealer and he says it's too worn to ID the variety and to soak it in oil...where it still sits. "

This answered it for me: " if you are an old Pro running a 71 kHz Gold Bug 2 with 3" x 6" concentric coil in low mineral ground, such that you have the sensitivity at max and are running in the low mineral setting, then expecting the 45 kHz GM1000 to match or exceed it on the tiniest of tiny bits is expecting too much. Conversely, if you are running a 14 kHz machine with a 14" x 13" DD coil and expecting the GM1000 to beat it on larger deeper gold you are expecting too much. If you are expecting the GM1000 to come close to replacing a SDC, GPX, or GPZ, you are expecting WAY too much! " The 1000 does appear to have its advantages... read the reviews.

I would not throw away the old topos. You might need them when the computer world comes to an end.....

Advice On Gold Bug 2 Replacement
LipCa replied to Steve Herschbach's topic in Metal Detector Advice & Comparisons
I have the Gold Bug Pro also(and the ATX). I suspect that the person that tried the Pro and did not like it really did not learn it. All detectors/coils have their place... some the same places.- 7 replies

Advice On Gold Bug 2 Replacement
LipCa replied to Steve Herschbach's topic in Metal Detector Advice & Comparisons
Both of my boys and I have the GB 2's and have no problem working up 20 to 25 feet apart. How close do you need to get? Get too close and they are finding my nuggets....grin- 7 replies

1795 Half Dime Found
LipCa replied to Steve Herschbach's topic in Metal Detecting For Coins & Relics
I found a 1722 Hibernia in Northern California some years ago... -
Remember when you used to be able to dredge in California..... First photo is beginning of last dredge I built. Second is dredge in operation. Notice my huge jet... all of about 10 inches long. Got tired of wearing the metal ones out.

The one medication I take I could go for a few days without taking it. But, being 70 and not choosing to give up climbing mountains in search of gold, I carry a couple aspirin in a bottle "just in case".

I find many people carry a compass but don't know how to use it. They don't know the declination for their area or even what declination is You must know if the direction you are walking is related to True north or magnetic north.... BIG difference on the West coast for sure. For example, if you have a declination of 20 degrees and walk 5 miles, you could be 1.8 miles from where you thought you were going..... You could still be lost!!
-
Although I've never had to use it in a "lost situation", I use Avenza maps ( https://www.avenzamaps.com/maps/how-it-works.html ) on my cell phone. Just download (free) USGS topo maps and keep track of where you are. Mark and describe finds or interesting areas just like a handheld GPS... Hey, it IS a handheld GPS on your phone!

2017 Goldpan! Will It Work?

I guess it depends on where you're at. I see some almost every day. -
2017 Goldpan! Will It Work?
LipCa replied to idahogold's topic in Gold Panning, Sluicing, Dredging, Drywashing, Etc
".It's a slightly different design for an object that is used for a rather uncommon activity...." Obviously you are not a miner or prospector....... EVERY miner uses a gold pan. Not an uncommon activity at all. -
Just find a pocket with 1000 ounces in it.....

Headphone Recommendation, Rattler Country
LipCa replied to a topic in Metal Detector Advice & Comparisons
If you can only hear out of one ear like me, rattlers are ok.... As for bears, one time I was detecting near the base of a large fir tree and pieces of bark kept falling on me. Like a dummy, I didn't think too much about it until a bear dropped on the ground about ONE foot away! It didn't even stop to say hello... gone like a flash!
