Thanks guys for your comments and recommendations. After reading the thread/post by Steve I decided on the Equinox 800. Have just placed an order for one so looking forward to a different type of detecting from which I normally do. (Gold)

Out done by Steve again lol. At least i get out done by a Jedi master.?

  2. The dealer is wrong lol. Now the other guys will be by at some point and they will say the 3030 has a place in the line up. That is true. Now my point of view; Nox is cheaper and just as good, only better in many cases. Try this point of view. I can go from Tahoe lake silver coin shooting, to my local part looking for some V nicks on my way to rye patch to nugget shoot and not change detectors. After all that if I have strength left I can relic hunt the ghost towns on my way to McDonald's.

If the dealer told you that the 3030 can do that trip with the same level of ability the Nox can, then I have a bridge in AZ I can sell you.

Nox is king of all around detectors and the price point is a grand low.

These are my view points only.

I am sure that the urge to dig her target was far stronger than any desire to test the 800...even after all these years  and good intentions I just start digging! I want to see the gold-right now!!!

Guilty as well. I ment to  Check the Nox on a target before digging it. But failed. I had to put my other unit in the truck lol.

So I headed to the hills yesterday to get acquainted with the Gold Mode of the EQX 800. Equipped with ear buds and the WM08, I used Gold 2, and only deviated from the factory presets by adjusting the volume to 5, the tone volume to 5, and notched in the 0 segment on the discrimination scale. The ground mineralization was a little too hot to run max sensitivity; backing it down to 20 quieted the ground nicely, but still allowed the targets to really pop. I chose an old thrashed patch that I’ve worked with many detectors in the past, including the Gold Monster last summer. Seems someone had been detecting the area recently , as they left their excavations open. I powered up the EQX, and performed a noise cancel and auto ground balance. Not 5 minutes into it, and the Nox got a nice hit in the bottom of one of the shallow dig holes; scraping out an inch or two revealed a bright little nugglet.

Just a few feet away I got another good response, this time in virgin ground. After removing the overlying carpet of moss, the target was still in the ground and much stronger. Digging another inch or two into the weathered quartzite bedrock, and the target was out: another golden bit.?

After hitting a small patch of tiny foil bits, the ground yielded one more yellow goodie.

During most of the hunt, I was running in all metal, unless I got into a healthy patch of hot rocks. They read a consistent -7,-8,-9 on the EQX display, wheras the nugglets were at 1 or 2. Iron falsing on square nails and such was much higher at anywhere from 11 to 35, and was easy to identify because the numbers weren’t consistent and wouldn’t pinpoint.

All up, 0.25 of a gram.

  5. Noise cancel, then ground balance. I balance by pumping and a little side to side sweep after. Just to see if the balance number will change.

As Steve has said lower the sensitivity. I run at 15 alot, some times even at 10. Even then I am punching down 8-10 inches easy. I find that the target id is a little more stable at 15 vs v 20. That could just be me, but it works.

Also don' jump between park and park two. Stick with park 1 for a awhile. You will get less frustrated. 5 or 50 tone i find is best. You should be able to call out what you are digging before you dig it. The Nox is that good. With the exception of the nickle range, that is a crap shoot.

  6. So I did a search and didn't find what I was after. What I would like to figure out is how to find old places to coin shoot. I guess parks would be a easy point to start.

    1. How to find the age of a place.

    2. How to find old places that might be abandoned or reused.

    3. General techniques of selecting a place to look for old coins.

Example I live in Reno with Steve ( probably why I don't find good nuggets or coins). Steve got some great coins as of late and I can't find older than 70 decade. Now I could go to tahoe but that is a drive and I would like a few local spots to take my kids that like treasure hunting, that is what they call it. So I tried figuring it out, no dice. I don' mind doing the work, just need the formula.

I was hoping that the veteran shooters had a method to their research and selection process.

    Thanks for the help.

Not that hot I think, just local parks, and more like 7-8 hours over three outings.

Good thing you cleared it up. I was starting to not like you lol. As it was making my 5 dollar average on a three hour run look bad. Therefore breaking up my hopes and dreams of keeping up with you.
