If I had 1,000 zinc pennies that were bad, it just isn't worth my time and money to send them in to get $10 back in pennies, if that is what can be done. My question would be if the coins are unusable and would just be thrown away in the trash, could you take them to the recycling center and at least get something for them?

Due to this thread being revived and that I had to start another peanut container to store coins in, it seemed like a great time to clean coins today. So far two of the four full plastic jugs' coins have been cleaned and are drying. I put them into a 5 gallon bucket with enough water to cover the coins. A bit of dish soap and agitation are all that is needed. The classifying screen that came with my Garrett gold panning kit works well to put the coins into after their bath. I then simply rinse them off and put them somewhere flat to dry. Once cleaned and dried, they will be redeemed for Amazon credit. I'm guessing that about 10% of the zinc pennies will be accepted, as Florida's soil is not friendly to them.

Nothing now, but there certainly may have been originally.

It's been a long dry spell since doing well this spring on the gold. Today I was out with the Nox 15" coil at a local park. This rang up a solid 11-12 in Park 1. Can't find one like it with a movable head.

Cool find 100 years after his death. His family likely has no recollection of him other than maybe pictures. Almost seems like it would be a neat item for a museum in his home town if they had one. Or, it would be an awesome story to tell others as they see it in your display case! Thanks for sharing all your finds with the forum members!

Sounds like you have just a shade more than this couple had, but it should be close!

If you take them to a machine, make sure to wash them before dumping. The first time I used a machine, the poor woman had to open it up 4 times to clean the inside because of all the dust. The next time around I washed the coins and didn't have any issues. The Wells Fargo bank inside our grocery store I tried to take my rolled coins to the first time took a sample roll of each type of coin and opened them. They would not accept all my rolls because they said the company who get the coins from them would not take them. The bank would be left eating the cost. That is the reason I went to the machine around the corner of the counter and gummed it up.

I usually do that as well, Steve. The unfortunate part is that our children end up using the credit "accidentally," and before I know it, it is gone! If our banks get to offering 10% more around here, I will likely be moved to clean the coins as much as I can and cash them in. I tried the coin calculator and the average of my samples gave me an overall amount of $692 for 52 lbs. of coins.

I'm holding out hope here in FL as well. I bet I've got at least $400 stashed in these containers. (Edited: I split up the large container and filled 2 more of the smaller containers. Each contain a little over 13 lbs. of coins. So, I guess I have over 50 lbs. total.) This shortage might free up some good finds for people who search rolled coins for silvers once the supply returns. With so many people bringing in coins, there are bound to be good coins accidentally included by some people.

Thanks, Chuck! I agree, there is more silver than gold, usually. In Utah, it was probably 10 silver rings to 1 gold. Here in Florida, I am actually finding more gold rings. I know, it is hard to believe. For me too! That's why I'm thinking that if I have found 3 substantial silver chains on the field, there has to be a gold there. BTW, if you come here and want to dig all my junk for me, you will have troubles finding it. I believe I have dug most of it! Happy digging!

I have found a few silver chains on the football field close to me, but a gold chain has eluded me. I'm sure there is one there, but I will need some guidance from others. Very nice ring and high gold content! Do you remember your settings? The only over-14K ring I have ever found was in the yard of someone who was letting me detect their place in an old part of town. It was her ex-husband's ring that she thought he "lost" many years earlier. It was the first time out with my newly purchased E-TRAC. I was hooked after that!

I was surprised myself. In fact, I thought it was a clad and only saw the date when I brought it home and washed it off with water. It had been there a while soaking in the sand.

The "soil" I'm detecting in shows signs of having been taken from the salt water, or in the salt water, at some point. There are still large shells located in the sandy mix. That may be why the coin is so crusty looking.
