  1. Cashed out the last two peanut containers tonight (2019+2020). Total for all 4 was $703. This year I had a much higher percentage of quarters due to my outings this spring at a local rec. center. Last year's total was $145, and this year's total was $236 and still going. I included a picture of pre-Florida rejected coins and Florida rejected coins. Obviously, Florida soil is not kind to zinc pennies.

Great find on the ring, sorry for no fish though. Did you try using the beach settings to find the fish?

Good luck on your next hunt.

Use a slow crank bait for the fish, it is getting cold and they don't move as fast.

Temp was 83° today in Florida. The fish were trying to hide in the shade to avoid the heat! It may have been the 10 ft. alligator that was limiting the number of fish.😳

  3. Just got back from a 45 minute deposit tonight. Two peanut containers down, two to go! The manager had to come and open the machine a couple times to clear crusty pennies and bent coins. The two times she did that, it printed out receipts for cash with the fee deducted. At the end, she credited back the $24.68 in fees. So, I got $115 in Amazon and the rest in cash! Total was $322.53. It was a fun time with my son who has had the experience before.😀 The last two pics show the rejected pile, likely about $4 in pennies and other mutilated coins.

  4. Now it will be easier the next time! Thanks for sharing your experience with us. I remember the first time standing there for about 45 minutes feeding a bunch of dirty coins into the machine. It sounded like a Las Vegas slot machine on steroids 🤣. I felt bad for the people coming to cash in a couple dollars worth of coins as I was in the middle of a major deposit of currency.

  5. I had about an hour before we were going fishing for fish this morning, so what better to do than to dirt fish? I was trying out a new set of aptX LL BT earbuds that were ordered for when the other ones start to fail. They paired fine, but they certainly were not fast. If I'm running 7 recovery, I don't want them to sound like a 3 recovery. I disconnected them and continued to hunt. About 5 minutes into no earbuds, I got a strong 11 ID. Not knowing what it really sounds like, having taken the earbuds out, I decided to dig as it seemed like a robust signal. The Carrot was able to hit the object from the surface, so it wasn't too far down. There are no markings, but from the looks of it, it appears to be about 18K based on my wedding band at 14K. I believe this makes 10 gold rings/necklaces for the year. To my recollection, all found with the 15" coil with 7 recovery. I remember the first few years of detecting when I found no gold. I really appreciate this machine! Florida weather doesn't hurt either, as it is far easier digging in non-frozen soil year-round! Almost forgot...fished for fish for 4 hours and didn't catch a thing. 🤪

So, is the consensus that the zinc's that are partially destroyed are not cashable or swappable anywhere? 👍👍

If I had 1,000 zinc pennies that were bad, it just isn't worth my time and money to send them in to get $10 back in pennies, if that is what can be done. My question would be if the coins are unusable and would just be thrown away in the trash, could you take them to the recycling center and at least get something for them?

  7. Due to this thread being revived and that I had to start another peanut container to store coins in, it seemed like a great time to clean coins today. So far two of the four full plastic jugs' coins have been cleaned and are drying. I put them into a 5 gallon bucket with enough water to cover the coins. A bit of dish soap and agitation are all that is needed. The classifying screen that came with my Garrett gold panning kit works well to put the coins into after their bath. I then simply rinse them off and put them somewhere flat to dry. Once cleaned and dried, they will be redeemed for Amazon credit. I'm guessing that about 10% of the zinc pennies will be accepted, as Florida's soil is not friendly to them.

Ough died in Oakland County, Almeida (Cal.), Jan. 20, 1920

Cool find 100 years after his death. His family likely has no recollection of him other than maybe pictures. Almost seems like it would be a neat item for a museum in his home town if they had one. Or, it would be an awesome story to tell others as they see it in your display case! Thanks for sharing all your finds with the forum members!

  9. If you take them to a machine, make sure to wash them before dumping. The first time I used a machine, the poor woman had to open it up 4 times to clean the inside because of all the dust. The next time around I washed the coins and didn't have any issues.

The Wells Fargo bank inside our grocery store I tried to take my rolled coins to the first time took a sample roll of each type of coin and opened them. They would not accept all my rolls because they said the company who get the coins from them would not take them. The bank would be left eating the cost. That is the reason I went to the machine around the corner of the counter and gummed it up.

  10. I usually do that as well, Steve. The unfortunate part is that our children end up using the credit "accidentally," and before I know it, it is gone!

If our banks get to offering 10% more around here, I will likely be moved to clean the coins as much as I can and cash them in.

I tried the coin calculator and the average of my samples gave me an overall amount of $692 for 52 lbs. of coins.

  11. I'm holding out hope here in FL as well. I bet I've got at least $400 stashed in these containers. (Edited: I split up the large container and filled 2 more of the smaller containers. Each contain a little over 13 lbs. of coins. So, I guess I have over 50 lbs. total.)

This shortage might free up some good finds for people who search rolled coins for silvers once the supply returns. With so many people bringing in coins, there are bound to be good coins accidentally included by some people.
