  1. Was out for 4 hours total today to the local football field and surrounding park after that. This is the same place I have found the silver half dollars, the steam engine oiler, the possible 1800s campaign token, many gold rings, etc. Basically, I never know what I'm going to find. I have cleaned out a lot of jewelry, so I'm hitting different areas that are around the field. I got a strong signal and knew it was iron. I initially thought it was a railroad piece when I just uncovered the eye...or a ring bolt brought here from Oak Island. It took at least 10 minutes of digging because it was flat in the ground. I had to uncover a good amount before it would budge. I don't like to hang out for too long in a park when I have a good amount of earth sitting above ground. Thankfully, there were no people around. Anyone know if it is hand forged, and what it is officially called? It looks like a hoe, but it is very heavy.

After I took the iron piece back to the vehicle, I hit another spot that used to be an old home/farm. That is where the lead pipe comes in. It also was way down, but once I got an end, it was easier to lift than the other piece.

    Equinox, 15", park 1, recovery 4 or 7... can't remember.

Love that huge silver y'all find. So far none for me. 😀

It's just a guess but the marks on the sides look kinda uniform. Could it have been clamped or mounted in something? Are the marks equidistant around the coin? Certainly looks like it happened a long time ago, just glad it wasn't taco'ed by a plow. 🤔

Took it in to a local coin expert, and it is for sure just a destroyed coin vs. an error. The two spots that are wrecked are not really the best place for mounting, so I'm not sure about the cause.

On my first look I thought you had a double cud (metal that 'spilled' out during minting due to a piece having previously broken off the die, causing metal to fill that hollow part of the die during strking).  That would have made this coin quite valuable (hundreds of dollars).  But then I noticed the last photo which shows some damage to the rim.  However, if there is only one damaged spot then it looks like the dies were rotated.  (The artificially produced cud is located at 3:00 on the obverse and 12:00 on the reverse.)

USA coins are intended to have the obverse and reverse 180 degrees rotated.  If you orient a USA coin with such that you see the obverse (front side or 'heads' side) appearing upright and then turn the coin over through a left-right axis, the reverse should then appear upright.  When that isn't the case it's due to rotated dies in the minting process and the more they are rotated, the more the value to error collectors.

So, try that and see if the dies are rotated.  Or are there two places on the rim where similar damage has occurred?

    Nice find, regardless!

GB, do you think this coin is special in any way (cuds), or is it just damaged from use? The Y on LIBERTY looks to be wonky for sure.

That is pretty awesome but I have maybe a dumb question.  Is the field on old ground or did a kid lose a coin from dad’s collection?   I see posts like this and just wonder.

It is in Florida, so it does have history. The area was a farming/citrus growing area prior to settlement. I believe the area was incorporated back in the 50's. I have found some additional silver coins and wheat pennies in the same area. Some have been down as deep as about 1 foot. There are definitely newer clad coins above this layer of old. So, I would guess it was not kids playing with Dad's collection.

  5. Was out for two hours today to a local football field after a rain. I have detected the field and surrounding area many, many times in the past. However, today there were many more interesting finds than normal! The only problem is, I have no idea what some of them are. The coin, which had an ID of 21, looks like it could be a colonial copper of some sort. I have circled what I think is the word "et"... assuming the meaning is "and." The brass item has glass windows, and was easy to take apart. Maybe a drip feed oiler? It was down about a foot. If you could lend your insight, that would be awesome 👍. The knife was crusty, but a bit of hitting helped break the sandy rust off. The handle appears to be plastic/ bakelite. I am along the west coast of FL around Tampa.

  6. Had a first today...not a bucket list item, however. As I was grabbing the Equinox handle after being on the ground for a dig, I felt something like oatmeal between my glove and handle. Hmm, strange. A quick glance reassured me that it was indeed poo. Thankfully, it was not the worst I have ever smelt and there was plenty of Spanish moss to wipe with.🤪

After that park was enjoyed, I hit another park that has a small pond and tennis courts. Wasn't sure there was going to be anything there, but nothing ventured...

Besides many quarters at that place (24 for the day), there was a good signal. When I pinpointed and brushed the leaves away, there was the ring staring back at me. Although fake, I guess it's better than another round of oatmeal!

Please share YOUR favorite run-in with dog Poo while detecting so we can all enjoy and relive the experience with you. Bet there are some really fun ones out there!

Anyone know what those strange markings are on the ring?

Figured it out after watching The Curse of Oak Island tonight. Those must be the box drains that have been buried for centuries. You have Templar gold, Baby! Did you find it in a swamp or next to large stones with carvings on them?

Wonder if it's the layout of the school the ring's wearer attended. You may just do a satellite Google Map search of the local high school(s) in your area and see if it matches the general shape on the ring.

  9. Out today to a local soccer complex that I have detected before. I believe it may have been an auto junkyard because there are tons of signals that sound amazing. It's only after I start digging to the earth's core that I realize it is not a silver coin, but rather a large piece of aluminum trim or car door handle, etc. Nevertheless, I had two signals that were actually good, solid high-tones with repeatable numbers. The 50¢ piece was a 33 id. I thought for sure it was going to be a silver ring, but the coin isn't bad either as I don't find many of those anymore.

The next high tone that caused pause was a 37-39 id. It was under a soccer goal, so I'm sure it has been detected before--likely left alone due to it sounding a lot like the rest of the trash in the ground. I also was going to leave it, but when the coil was raised and waived over the signal, the audio trailed off quickly. It was very caked with sand, but some brushing help reveal at least some details. The front looks like the rest of the medals I found online, but the back does not appear to be the same. Do any of you have anymore information about these medals? Also, how does one go about cleaning the crusted sand from the medal(bronze)? I know it could harm it possibly, but it certainly won't be worth anything in its current state.

So you got it up for sale on Ebay already?    Nice find.

Sure looks like the same hallmark.  I'm impressed you were able to match it.  I didn't notice in your post how deep it was.  How does the 15 inch coil leave you (arm, back,...) feeling after a decent day's hunt?

It was about 2 inches beyond the depth of the Carrot. As for the 15" coil, I tend to only have about 2 hours to detect at a time, sometimes 3. Due to the nature of my hunting style, my legs get far more fatigued than my arm/shoulder/back in that window of time.
