Steve, does the gold monster use the same middle shaft as well as the lower shaft? Thanks.

I went back and reread what you had written Steve. I understand now what you were saying. I guess I got a little too excited thinking that we had a answer to the lower rod situation. Thanks for the clarification.

    Hi all!

I know this has been discussed before, and I think I recall someone noting that the X-Terra rod outside diameter is a tiny bit smaller than the Equinox.  But what I'm wondering is if one of the X-Terra lower rods can be "rigged" to work with the Equinox.  If it is JUST the OD of the rod that is too small, perhaps a wrap of tape or something may take care of that, as long as the spring clip is compatible, and as long as the lower rod piece, where the coil ears attach, would be a similar "width" so as to fit properly between the coil ears.

It doesn't have to be "perfect;" my thought is that with the 6" coils becoming available fairly soon, but NOT the rods, perhaps an X-Terra rod could limp me through, for awhile, with some minor modifications?

    Has anyone tried one?

    Steve

One guy used a rod from the Excal, some addition information says this set up isn't the best.

The detector has a 4 point connection to match the usb cable. My wm08 only has a 2 point connection (and 2 holes). Is this correct or is it defective? I appreciate the help.

No it's not, the other 2 on the machine are the USB connectors if there ever is an update needed.

  4. I was going to wait until the 6" coil came out to hunt this spot. My buddy and I decided to go ahead and take our Nox's out and give it whirl anyways. This is one of the most iron polluted places I've hunt with the Nox and it did very well considering we had the 11" coil where you really need a much smaller coil. This was my buddy's second outing with the Nox and he actually did a great job adapting to it under the circumstances. I was running Park 1, 2 tones, recovery speed 7, iron bias 0, tone break set from -9 to +8 with low tones assigned to this bin, high tones from +9 and up. Ground balance set to 0, sensitivity set at 18. I was using a new pair of APTX earbuds that was more than fast enough with no lag at all.

This machine is unreal in the iron, I had zero problem with the iron giving false signals, which I think it had to do with the iron on or near the surface and the soil was bone dry. It may be a different story if I ever hunt it after a good rain. Even though there was a nonstop barrage of low tones, when I did hit a digable target there was no doubt about it. I was surprised at how well the Nox hit with consistent VDI's, not that I was going by the numbers, but, it was rather impressive anyway. My buddy and I both noticed that we were digging deeper hits with the Nox than we did with the Etrac or the CTX in this spot.

I received a list of Equinox accessories that I could order from my dealer several days ago..

The 6” Coil list price was $179.00 plus $10.00 for the skid Plate..  11” Coil is $229.00 +$18 for the skid..

    Waterproof Headphone 3.5mm Conn. $149.00

Many other accessories available for order too. Headphones, adapters, chargers etc.

Do you mind if I ask who your dealer is? I just called my dealer and he hasn't heard a word yet. I hope they get on the ball in short order and get this thing going.

  6. Stopped at a park yesterday because I saw they had removed some grass from an area. First target within 3 minutes was a 56 rosie, the only coin in the spot.  I went to the zoo today where they had dug up an old dead tree, only target within 5 minutes was a ugly old Merc. I was running Park 1, 2-tone, tone break set at 23, recovery 7 and iron bias 1  It was great to swing faster than I ever could with the CTX, I had to cover ground fast because my time on both days was very limited.

Both dimes were hitting at 26-27 and were very shallow.

Do you have a picture off the applied screen protector?

I wonder how those things come off if they need to... On the screen it'll come off no problems, but on the foil surrounding the screen and the buttons..

This was cut from a scrap piece I had left over from putting some on the CTX, I'll replace it sometime soon with the full pieces I just bought, but, it's not an issue since I also use the Deno's cover. Pealing the Zagg off is no issue, I've done it a couple of times before without any problems.

The battery is only warrantied for 1 year (12 months) , from the date of purchase and if you change it yourself...beware! Please read Minelab's email to customers on Feb 21, 2018. Here is an extract:

"We at Minelab stand behind both the ingenuity as well as the quality of our products. For clarity, The EQUINOX control box and coils are covered under warranty for a period of 3 years (36 months) from the date of purchase. The Lithium-ion battery contained in the handle is replaceable and is also covered under warranty for a period of 1 year (12 months) from the date of purchase. Minelab recommends using an Authorized Service Centre (ASC) for battery replacement to avoid potentially damaging the waterproof seal during replacement, which could void the 3-year detector warranty."

I've had my battery out a couple of times taking pictures, I have to say, you'd almost have to go out of your way to screw the seals up. But, I'm sure someone could find a way to damage them if they weren't paying attention to how the pod goes back in.

On the 800 the backlight is pretty blinding if night hunting, I like the Zagg idea Dan, but am thinking about using some of my red film on the screen.  Hmm...maybe do the Zagg first and then make removable red film cover out of one of the multitudes of multi-language screen covers Minelab included.

So you put the Zagg cover over the factory screen cover and the buttons?

That was the original plan, but I screwed up the Minelab cover in the process. And yes, I covered the entire face plate with the Zagg. The Nox faceplate was easier to cut a template for than the CTX or the Etrac.

  10. I picked these up this past week for my Equinox from E-bay for $5.99 for a pack of 3.  The size is perfect for the Nox, simply cut to fit and a great way to add extra protection to the entire face of the 800 or 600. I've been using the Invisible-Shields for the last 3 years, they work like a champ, almost completely scratch proof. These are a very inexpensive way to save your screen and touchpad from getting jacked up. I thought I'd pass this along.

Coming from Tesoros I have picked up a NOX 600.  I am use to setting threshold to a barely audible hum.  Then setting discrimination. The quieter the threshold hum, the better discrimination works. Or so it seems.

So what exactly then does setting threshold do on the NOX?

According to the manual; it is used to notch out an item, like a nickel or penny.

Can someone please explain the differences.  And also explain that if I set the threshold on the NOX to a barely noticed hum what are the consequences?

    Thanks

    Terry

The threshold doesn't disc out anything, but it will allow you to  hear when you run across a target you've disc'd out, by the sound dropping off. I run a barely audible threshold, but, I do not run any disc at all. It functions the same as the Tesoro's threshold. I do not like running the threshold volume too high as it becomes annoying. There really isn't any "consequence" to running a barely audible threshold unless it's so low you can't hear what's going on under the coil.

  12. I was hunting an old abandoned ball field today, Park 1,  running 2 tones, recovery 7, iron bias 0, 0 disc, tone break to accept 19 and up, full volume from -9 to 40 and 1 pitch from -9 to 18.  I only had a couple of hours to hunt this morning so I was cherry picking high tones only. I had recovered 9 or 10 pieces of clad from the trash, shaking my head each time I hit a coin, because I know for a fact I had covered this same dirt 3-4 times with the CTX. I started chasing some iffy semi repeatable high tones just to see what was in the ground.

I got a scratchy, but a repeatable high tone if I wiggled the coil real fast in very short sweep. The first hit was coming in at the mid to high 30's and I figured it was deep iron, I scrapped away 5-6" of dirt and the signal improved but the numbers were unstable, bouncing around the upper 30's. I was down about 13-14" when I found what was sounding off, part of an old aluminum can. I've noticed aluminum likes to bounce somewhat if it's irregular in shape and size.

I made another pass and got an almost identical type of hit and very close to the same VDI's only they stayed in the low 30's not bouncing into the mid to upper 30's. After scrapping 7-8" of dirt, I rescanned the hole and the signal cleaned up and was more of a mellow sounding, unlike the aluminum hit, this time staying around 32-33. At 10" I popped the target out, a shell casing from almost a foot deep :super:  I know it's not a silver coin or gold ring, but, that hit gave me a surge of confidence, that this dog will hunt!!!

Later in the day, I headed to a vacant lot that had surrendered some stuff over the last 3 years to the Etrac and CTX to see if the Nox could sniff out some stuff. I was running the same setup and started chasing iffy signal from the start. There used to be an old house here at one time and it's nasty with nails, brass, copper chunks and bits and pieces of aluminum everywhere.

Every signal I dug was  right next to trash or had iron in the hole with the target. I dug 2 wheats, the lipstick case and the good luck token in the trashiest part of the yard. Needless to say, I am more than pleased with the Nox and can say it has surpassed what I was expecting, hands down!!

I've been off for the last week and picked the most polluted places that I've hunted in the past with the Etrac(small coils) and the CTX(6" coil)  My goal was to take the CTX out on these hunts to cross check signals, but, after hunting with the Nox, I lost interest in bringing the CTX along. Not only that, it's a big time waster and a hassle to switch back and forth between machines. Actually, I was having way too much fun with the Nox to even care.

Just a heads up...  Seeing a few of the charging leads coming apart at the head.

Could be a batch problem as some I have seen look 100% OK  and have had some use...

Others seem to have started showing problems - see the 3 pics of my 2 charging heads  AND the last pic.. (not mine) is at time of un packing; and was almost separated...

One of mine is not crash hot and the other could fail with a little push.   A simple weld will fix the problem, but will be e-mailing ML service to let them know.

One of mine is coming apart as well, I'll be sending an e-mail to ML tonight, thanks for bringing it up.

What I don’t understand is the camou treatment people give their detectors. But I’m sure  there is a valid reason why they want it to blend in.

I used Camo tape, because, pink, blue, green or orange would have clashed with my camo pants :)

  15. armrest1.thumb.jpg.adcf936c8cd93e713e2ec75bc77e5335.jpgI decided to see if I could balance out the Nox without too much time or $ involved. So far I'm at $7 and we'll see if this will even pan out. First, I moved my control box forward 11/2"  moved my armrest forward as far as possible and added some ballast at the very back. I used 9   3/4" washers, with a piece of 3/4 round stock in the center as a bushing. I ran a 1/4" hole thru the bushing and mounted it in the last armrest hole. I'll see if the extra weight is worth trying to balance the machine just a little bit more tomorrow when I take it for spin.

    Number 13.

Now the alloy mix on those war nickels, Nox might be seeing with processing.  I had that happen with Etrac a few times on war nickels- they read 43 conductive in the ground.

The highest reading I got with the Etrac was 31 in the ground. The nickle was a black disc, covered in a layer of black crust.

I guess I'll have to dig a few, but, there's an awful lot of crap that falls between 13 and 24 at that old field.
