  1. Not necessarily. But it can take a lot of time and money to get permitted which may make a mining operation prohibitive.
  2. Technically yes, though Ive' only heard of one instance of attempted enforcement.
  3. Mr. Wilderland; Sir, In my own defense I must set the record straight. The "bit" part is incorrect. As always. Mr. SS is the official team photographer.
  4. Never ever believe anything S.S. tells you. He is a gold miner and we all know the truth and gold mining don't mix. The truth of his story is he knows that if he skunks me I will feed his dog sardines for lunch and he will have to smell fishy dog farts all the way home --- which smell even worse than me. Mr. Dorado Please refer to a post from late June of last year titled "A True Story".
  5. Many farmers swear to this day that crop planting should be done during different phases of the moon for different crops. My problem with detecting under a full moon is the sudden growth of hair gets in my eyes and it becomes difficult to hold the detector with my paws.
  6. Dang it all. Why wasn't I smart enough to just ask an internet forum where to go detecting instead of wasting all those years doing history research, geologic studies, digging hundreds of pounds of trash and hiking for days on end with little to show for it. Boy am I dumb. That being said; Mr. fartraveller, I truly wish you the best of luck and sincerely hope you enjoy the journey as much as I have. Expecting some stories and photos from you soon.
  7. Mr. O.M.C.1; I have analyzed the nuggets and the weight shown in your photo, used an actuary algorithm, multiplied the result by Pi times radius squared and determined that searching for and finding those nuggets has added 1.385 years to your life. Therefore congratulations are in order.
  8. Mr. OzGold; I have found the 7000 to be unequivalebly the most horriblest, obnoxioustest detector I have ever used for pin pointing. Add to that the fact that it can act goofy around clay and you are working under water where it is probably difficult to see what you are doing I believe the best solution to your problem is to accept your fate and continue forth with good humor.
  9. I'm sorry to disappoint you all but I"m able to post with no problems using crab apple safari.
  10. If I where tecknoelogiclee adept I would post a video of all the faults with this gentleman's method and I'll be danged if I would wear a costume while doing it. He does get Klunker credits for using a steel pan. Mr. Ridge Runner; Sir. I hereby challenge you to a duel on my claim at sunrise, using the gold pans of choice at 20 paces. We can spend the rest of the day detecting. This post should put me slightly ahead in the "Grumpy Old Miners" contest.
  11. Sourdough Scott and I have had the same situation since November. I bring Sourdough cookies on visiting days but I believe the staff steals them as they are afraid to remove the straight jacket.
  12. I just can't imagine what it would be like to find out I was wrong about something. There is a certain sadness in this story on many levels.
  13. For me it's whatever Sourdough Scott has in his back pack. He is easily distracted with my "Ten years ago I found a 2oz. nugget just over that ridge, You should go check it out"
  14. Don't know for sure but it should be stout enough to haul the gold out. I read in an old book that "anything mankind can imagine mankind can do".
  15. But Sir! You know how much I love a good Joke. So Here's an idea for the jeenyuses. Induction in iron produces a much stronger field than in non-ferrous metals with the same mass. Also iron likes to polarize with the magnetic poles of the planet. Also, as Steve said, we all tend to mentally discriminate targets so why can't computer processing do the same while measuring the strength and polarization of a field? I'm working on it. Does anyone here have two JJ6LGCC7 vacuum tubes and a 12KV transformer?
  16. I'm going back to my steel pan, axe eyed pick and wooden handled #2 shovel. I just hope I can catch that damned burrow.
  17. It was just the other day I decided to go detecting. That's not a frivolous decision to be made lightly in the Northern Sierra Nevada mountains in early February but a recent series of severe rainstorms had melted the snow off below about 4,000 feet and a storm that was predicted for the night before failed to arrive. So with a few kind words of encouragement and a couple of dog biscuits I was able to get the dog out of his warm bed on the back porch and coerce the Jeep out of hibernation. The Jeep loves dog biscuits. With the snow level just above town and the highway below town closed due to the recent storms my only choices for places to detect were areas that had been detected dozens of times by dozens of detectorist over dozens of years. If my arithmetic is correct dozens X dozens X dozens = absolutely pounded but I thought with a little dumb luck I might stumble across a missed nugget or two. I have an ample supply of dumb and great hopes for the other part. The roads were in horrible and somewhat dangerous condition which cost a lot of detecting time but the old Jeep got us there in good order. However, by the time I got the detecting gear and the reluctant dog unloaded a cold wind had come up and it began to rain with flurries of snow mixed in. I should have loaded up and left right then but I have never let common sense spoil a good detecting trip. I did at least have enough sense to head out up hill from the Jeep so that it would be faster to return if I had to make a desperate escape. I worked my way up the side of a steep gulch and dug the usual square nails, bullets, bits of wire and tin can shards out of the half frozen mud, with the appropriate cuss words, finding just enough targets to keep me interested. In fact I was interest enough to loose track of the time until finally the dog suggested that maybe we should start back a bit early just in case the Jeep made a poor choice negotiating one of the mud holes on the way back home. The quickest way back to the Jeep was to continue up hill to the ridge line above us and follow it down to the road where the Jeep was parked. I stopped on top of the ridge catch my breath and from there I had a fantastic view in several directions. The storm was breaking up and the evening sun was peeking out underneath the retreating clouds making the snow covered mountains to the East glow with a beautiful rose color. I then realized - there was no place on earth I would rather be than where I was, there was nothing in the world I would rather be doing than what I was doing and all of those bits of trash that I cussed were actually priceless treasures. It was just the other day... I turned 70 years old.
  18. Sorry but I didn't have much time. I had to repair my wrist mounted web slinger because my spider senses told me there was evil lurking about and I needed to be prepared. Mr. Cobill: I eagerly await hearing about whatever you find that works well for you.
  19. I've always compared operating a metal detector for nugget hunting to learning a musical instrument. To do it well takes endless hours of practice with intense concentration. If you are thinking about anything besides the nugget underneath the next swing of the coil you are going to miss gold. I have spent my entire working career around heavy equipment and chainsaws and I cannot pass the hearing test for my commercial drivers license but i am still rather successful at nugget hunting. Technology is fantastic but it will never replace the need for hard physical effort and training yourself to not only hear but to also listen.
  20. just so you all are aware the yellow one handles EMI very well. Thanks Doc.
  21. Dang! after reading this thread, I wonder if I can send it back.
  22. The price of gold is rising, the price of detectors is falling so now there is a little voice in my head saying "GGGOOO DDEEETECCCTIINNG".
