My phone camera has had a tough life. Only the front camera works anymore and my android phone and mac computer refuse to speak to each other so I have to text my photos to Sourdough Scott then he Emails them back to me so that I can post them therefore my silly post are actually Sourdough Scott's fault.

A few of us camped out near an old mining town because it is central to a lot of good detecting both relics and nuggets. In the past the Grand Pubah of relic hunting (Strick) has found several ladies items - buttons, garter clips, a beautiful woman's buckle and such. When he posted photos of some of these items a forum member here suggested there may have been a brothel at this site. the name stuck (lady members please forgive us, its a guy thing). So while relic detecting, Strick, being the quintessential relic hunter that he is, spotted this cute ceramic dolls head. I had found the ceramic arms to this doll on two previous outings and knowing it wouldn't be right to keep the doll parts separated Strick and I had a wrestling match in the dirt to see who would part with there pieces and it only took a small bribe for the referee (Sourdough Scott) to declare me the winner.

I will have to be more aware and be careful no to make contact with the ground with my coil while detecting. Silly me. I should have known this as I know my excavator buckets last much longer if I don't allow them to scrape on the ground. However, the stock 6000coil cover is made from the softest material I have ever found for a "skid plate". It can easily be scratched with your thumbnail.

Detecting is his tranquilizer, thus the impatience for better equipment.

I happen to be the epitome of preparation and organization. I have never forgotten my boots, lunch, water, backpack, batteries, gold bottle, power cords, headphones, dog or detector. At least I don't remember ever having done so. Any post by Strick or Sourdough Scott on this topic which mentions my name is not to be believed. I would have submitted this post sooner but I forgot to push the "submit reply" button.

I just can't comprehend why a popular detecting forum would be discontinued. They are so easy to set up and maintain, there are millions of dollars to be made, they take very little personal time, the members are always appreciative and thankful for what little work that the owner must do to keep it popular and for the valuable information they get, and detectorists and prospectors rarely need their posts to be monitored or edited. Maybe Mr. H. could explain how this could happen.

But wouldn't it be a little less risky to just go out with my detector and pick up a few bits here and there?

Mr. Phrunt is correct. If you have found that you are really enjoying detecting than you now have an excellent excuse to up grade to a better detector. Some of the best detectorist on planet Earth (and maybe the universe) participate on this forum and you can save yourself a lot of grief and money by seeking their advise. Best of luck to you.

OK. since nobody else will explain your strange gold specimen, I guess I'll have to do it. It appears to me to be gold formed hydro thermally in a cryogenic non conformity of porphyry in a dot matrics and deposited sometime in the late Precambrian or early Truman administration and commonly known as a rarity yet quite frequently found with Minelab GPX6000 detectors set at 12 degrees before top dead center. I hope you enjoyed finding it as much as I enjoy making a fool of myself.

I recognize the relic. it's a special hook for lifting 1000 lb ore buckets from a deep mine shaft. It's about 18" wide by 20" long, made of forged steel and weighs about 25lbs

I have often thought that some intelligent person (that leaves me out) could build a pulse inductive detector that could be "trained". Nearly all detectorsist will discriminate targets to some extent by the type of target response heard through the headphones. It's not a very smart thing to do as I can guarantee you will miss gold but you just have to decide if your time is more productive covering acreage or digging a target that sounds just like the last 500 square nails that you dug. I have fooled myself may times when I knew it was trash but it turned out to be a nugget and where is was thinking of ways to spend the proceeds from my sure thing undug nugget but only to be rewarded with another square nail. However there are times when I know for certain that a target is a gold nugget. Can't say if it's a very "trained" ear or if I'm weird,

Posted February 3, 2020 I'll give you folks my method of ground balancing with the ferrite. It works well for me but maybe not for everyone. Start by setting the ferrite ring on the ground where you are certain there are no targets. Stand the ferrite on edge and orient it North and South (Australians and New Zelanders may have to orient it South to North). Step away from the ferrite a few feet and ground balance the detector. Now your ready to go find gold! Don't forget to pick up your ferrite ring at the end of the day. I would love to have anyone come here and demonstrate that ground balancing with the ferrite ring in this area makes any significant improvement.

Glad you got it back myght (myght is Australian for "mate" pronounced with a Tennessee accent). If the darned thing floats you should bring it back with you.

A GP with a stock DD coil is very hard to beat. Just go real slow with lots of overlap. I'm not disappointed with my Evo coil but my money might have been spent better elsewhere.

Myself and others have recently made thousands of new gold discoveries that are accessible with minimal costs. Mining equipment and employee costs have fallen dramatically and parts, maintenance and fuel costs are of little concern. Central banks, nation states and ultra rich are all divesting of gold inventories and golds' anti-corrosive characteristics for industry just aint what they used to be. Furthermore gold has fallen out of fashion with the ladies. Yup. I see no hope for a rise in the price of gold whatsoever. So I guess I'll have to "Lay up my treasures in heaven".

Arsenopyrite. Very common in this area. I have found dozens of them, up to 2" while dredging. A good gold indicator.
