My sincerest apologies, just trying to explain why your gizmo is different and superior to the GPZ circuit yet you throw me under the bus to the guy that is questioning the need for the SP01 in the first place for imprecise terminology ussge.   That makes sense.

I admit I am just a dumb EE, not a "decent audio engineer".   However, all those terms were being thrown about in the thread without being precisely defined and the terms are imprecise enough to have overlapping contexts (equalization is a type of filtering is it not?)  So please tell me what is the precise and proper term for your filter that "squeezies broad signals in the vertical plane" so I can use the correct terminology without being scolded again.

🤣🤣  No throwing under buses 🤣

Unfortunately when I did the original label I used the word filter which in hindsight was a mistake. Basically its a type of compression but its advantageous to only compress a certain band of frequencies at any one time. Because people run their threshold tones at different frequencies, the optimum band of frequencies to compress will differ, hence the 3 'filter' settings.

'Optimum frequency band' was too big to put on label 🤣

That's just semantics.  Pat says in his own post that it "manipulates" the audio.  Whether you call it equalization, filtering, or coloring those are all just imprecise terms for audio manipulation.

As Jasong previously stated, there is a huge difference between equalization, filtering, coloring and compression. Just ask any decent audio engineer lol. In simple terms, the sP01 squeezes broad signals in the vertical plane so that the rise is more abrupt. That way signals are more noticeable.

Along with the sP01 having a bypass if I were Pat I'd put another mode on that just boosts the audio with no filters, just so people who dislike any modification of the audio still have a mode they like.

Unfortunately physical space limits what can and can't be included in a product.

  3. Hey Guys,

    Great discussion.

Here's my take on the wireless EMI issue. Firstly I would use something like the Quest Wirefree Mate system. I have found it extremely resistant to EMI issues and very reliable. I would certainly experiment with placement of the TX unit near the 7000 control box and make sure it wasn't mounted near the sides as Simon indicated previously. The other good thing about the Quest system is that it doesn't seem to color the audio.

Now for the sP01. yes it will boost audio, but it also manipulates the audio. When I designed it, its primary purpose was to convert those deep broad target responses and put more of an edge on them so they stand out more. Of course this will also make all targets more noticeable which is why its been such a success on the 2300. I've pull deep targets using a 4500 that were barely a whisper without the sP01. With the sP01 connected, you could here a definite target response. One target I remember in particular (only because my back went out digging the hole) was a small piece down 900mm, the length of my pick handle (35" for my American friends).

Cheers and good luck out there.

    regards Pat

It's a fact that you hear electrical interference, EMI, with your ears. Your ears are on your head, so the EMI is probably coming though your head into your ears. So the only solution is to put the foil where it will really help.

Tin Foil Hat photos, royalty-free images, graphics, vectors ...

I know a few people who would actually do this 🤣🤣🤣

  5. The GPZ will have various shields within the plastic housing whether it be layers of aluminium foil or a carbon coating/paper. I havent opened one to have a look. They will be using the plastic housing because its cheap to manufacture and lighter in weight than a metal enclosure.

Even the GPX which is a metal case has additional shielding inside.

  6. Love the idea of wireless incorporated but there isn't that much room. Plus then the case couldn't be completely aluminium unless there was an external antenna. There are ways around the antenna issue using different cables but then there is the issue of non standard cables.

On the GPX I use the Quest WireFree Mate system which is so small its not really noticeable. The only other thing I use is a slimline battery that is yet to be released........🙄

  7. Hey All

Sorry for the late reply but its all been a bit busy here organising a move interstate.

To use the sP01 with the QED, Garrett (and I'm pretty sure the Whites machines) requires a different input cable than the standard one as the headphone sockets are wired differently to the Minelab machines.

That being said, the output level of the QED (compared to other machines) is low and does not provide enough level to drive the sP01 to its full output. The Garretts and Whites perform fine.

Reg - if you are going to the Bendigo Gold expo in March, bring along a QED as I am working on something that may work well with it.

    regards

Totaly agree Steve I've been saying for years why can't someone come up with a pi detecter with target I'd or like you say some kind of accurate iron I'd that works and doesn't mask out gold.. I know Nokta were toying with a ground scan style detecter that somehow analised the target and gave you a chemical make up reading simalar to the white t3i but in pulse detection. Like you said that would open up a whole new lot ground to search. Also like you mentioned the gold is getting less and less so its not more power we need its smarter searching options thay can tell gold from junk etc

Unfortunately PI technology as it currently exists does not lend itself to accurate discrimination. The physics just don't support it.

I'm sure some form of hybrid technology will come along and eventually solve the issue. Maybe a combination of PI and magnetometer could help with ferrous discrimination.

  9. That's gold that was found on a lease in Corindhap. The first week they were in Vic and filmed in Creswick (only found a few tiny bits), Corindhap (on a lease) and then filmed some stuff in the Ballarat Gold Museum. They then went down some old mines with the Victorian Historical Mine Shaft Chasers group before heading up to Qld where they are filming now.

Tyler from Aussie Gold Hunters has joined Parker as well as a new guy named Fred who you will see around Episode 13 of this seasons Gold Rush.

Then if you look inside the GPZ itself where the wires go into the control box they're loose flexible wires.

You can see them flapping in the wind ?

There is a big difference between inside the case and a flexible adapter cable. Inside the case the wires have no movement from the other end. There is no pulling or flexing. This isn't the case with the adapter cables. There can be stresses and movement on the adapter cable every time the coil is changed. Any added material to stop the stresses on the joints can only prolong the life of the connection.

  11. I have the 17x11 and it was my go to coil for quite a while. Punches deep, easy to pin point and is sensitive on small bits.

That being said, the 14 will punch a little deeper but isnt as easy to pinpoint and maneuver in between grasses/bushes/rocks.

There isnt one coil that will do everything so you have to decide what feature gives the most advantage and go for that coil.

I also have the 14x9 Evo (as mentioned by Nenad) and its great for smaller prickly bits.

  12. When I make the patch leads I also put another plug on to the original coil. That way it can still be used. Have you tried the original coil with the patch lead? If it works then the fault is with the x coil. If not then either the patch lead is wired incorrectly or the ic in the plug has been damaged.

  13. Most are aware of the goldfields of Western Australia and Victoria but there are more throughout Australia. NSW and QLD also have their fair share of gold and I was lucky enough to be able to spend a few days up in NSW with some friends.

We only managed a few days detecting ( I still had to squeeze in some business commitments as well as some well needed down time) but I still came away with just under 1/2 an oz.

It's beautiful country and well worth a visit if you get a chance.

This has been my schedule this week.

    Monday - Wedderburn

    Tuesday - Kingower

    Wednesday - Whipstick

Holy crap, you're all over the place. You have to decide if you are prospecting or sight seeing. You'll need at least a couple of days in each of those spots just to get your head around what is going on. Spend the first part of the day looking around and trying to understand the ground and what is going on. Then in the afternoon go for a swing and get the excitement out of your blood. Then the following day, slow down and concentrate on working the area properly. Gold has had millions of years to learn how to hide from us. Cant expect to find it in one day.

Ok lecture over - looks like your having fun though. If I didn't have so many backorders to get through before the weekend, I'd join you (and maybe hobble you a little to slow you down lol). Good luck for todays adventure and I do hope you get on to some yellow.

    regards Pat

I don't know who told you Mitchel that Wedderburn has no accommodation, as there is a motel in the main street.

Beats me as to why you thought that beach hunting at Bell's beach would turn up anything. You should have contacted Pat ( SteelePhase) as he lives at Ocean Grove, which would have been a much better choice.

Mitchel did send me a message but I wasnt on my computer all day so I missed it until it was too late. Bell is great for surfers (none take anything valuable near the water except for their boards) and generally tourists only get as far as the carpark .

As for the gold - you'd be better off picking a spot and giving yourself at least a few days. The first day you'll be buzzing from spot to spot not really covering the ground properly. On the second day you will have gotten over the initial excitement and slowed down. The gold here isnt that easy to find and it takes time and patience (unless your that kid who tripped over a nugget in Bendigo).

    Hi Pat, thanks heaps mate.

    well the Nokta sold.

Pat, how would the SDC (or any PI for that matter) fair with so much trash about? There would be a huge amount of iron/nails etc.

Is there was a VLF that would handle the mineralised ground better than what a PI would handle trash?

    Thanks mate.

PS... Ocean Grove was my haunt as a child/young bloke during the summer months. Fond memories.

    Al.

PI machines dont discriminate. Therefore you dig every target. High trash areas can be a nightmare but also very rewarding if you have the patience.

VLF machines can discriminate the iron out but its a tradeoff for depth in mineralised ground.

Basically ALL VLF machines will struggle with mineralised ground. The higher frequency machines are great for smaller gold but only if you pick your ground as I mentioned before and as geof_junk mentioned for sniping creeks etc. The guys using the Monster and Gold Bugs are doing well going over quartz piles, quartz reefs, tailings and old mullock heaps. They are finding the small gold the old timers missed.
