  1. It's about poking fun really at ourselves or myself. Over on FM they have people threatening to leave Minelab (as if you could) and buy other machines. My wife is always making fun of me because when we walk together my eyes are on the ground and she's looking up enjoying the scenery. My daughter says my garrett pouch is just my desire to bring back my fanny pack from the 80's. I was detecting at a nursery last Friday and one of the workers called his boss and said a stranger is out in the fields checking for radiation. Another thought I was looking for oil. I guess I should be upset because I'm a detectorist right?

I showed a friend of mine who doesn't detect the video to get his response and he said he looked like a guy in hazmat suit. You, we, I don't have to take offense to everything we see or hear.

By the way I'm super excited it's getting to be the end of January but not because of the Equinox. I'm excited because we public school teachers get paid only once a month for 10 months out of the year and january is a freaking long month and I'm addicted to groceries as is my lovely wife.

  2. It’s great your son is interested in detecting. My son is 20 and he just doesn’t quite see yet the thrill of detecting that his dad does.

I used to love watching Oak Island as I’m still that little kid who wishes I could find buried treasure but we switched to PlayStation Vue and they don’t carry History channel so I’ve yet to see an episode this season. If I was Marty and his brother I’d just close the island down and spend every day Detecting.

I bet when Gary Dayton gets the Equinox out there he will solve the mystery. ?

Neil has done some sterling work carrying out pre-release testing on behalf of Minelab on both land and in sea water ( Not Fully Submerged Underwater ), how many other folk would spend their time in a howling gale and torrential rain on Blackpool beach here in the UK just to show others the capabilities of the Equinox,  10 out of 10  for Neils endeavors in such vile weather.

My post wasn't meant in a derogatory way but rather just an observation. I'm not the serious type I guess. I teach middle school kids and have for 27 straight years so I look at life and people a little differently than most.

As for the video, what does it really show? It's not a test. There's no data to compare it to anything else. Compare it to what Steve provides when he discusses detectors/detecting. It's just a guy in a wetsuit on the beach with a detector.

  4. A ships spike? In the Dominican? Could it connected to the money pit?

Sorry I just couldn't help myself as i remembered the episode on oak Island where Gary Drayton found the spike in the swamp.

That must have rang off the charts given it's size. I would say that it is of more recent vintage given how sharp the lines are on it's edges. I hope he brings in some great stuff gold in color. Too bad you're not there to help him!

I just love coming on here to see if maybe to hear one little encouraging word but nothing.

My doorbell ring and I rush to see a little girl selling cookies.

I see coming down the street and it’s FedEx but they don’t stop at my door .

My wife comes out of the house and sticks her nose in the air then drives off in her Equinox.

I know you want to know what this have to do with anything. Well nothing but I’m wondering if Minelab knows it’s only 5 days left in this month.

    Chuck

Yep, I wake up each day with the hope that the UPS driver has me on his list. I've bypassed Santa and his list and I'll just settle for a guy named Larry. End January now!

  6. Ha Ha I agree it'll be hard to know exactly but I thought it might help pass the time away while we wait. I think its amazing how involved and in depth folks are going on when it'll arrive. I've learned more about shipping containers and cost, the size of UPS and FEDEX airplanes than i ever thought possible. No matter what it seems it's still on a slow boat from China.

  7. The story of when the Equinox is coming to a home near you (or mine) is likely only rivaled by the ongoing saga of where's the 5 months of texts the FBI lost, DACA or OCRAPPA(what happened when I lost my glasses). I've read now that the issue is going to be the length of time it takes for the container ships to go from Malaysia, the software, drop shipping, and the port of entry (will they be shipped to the US directly or indirectly like Malaysia to Australia to the US.)

So I thought why not have a little contest to see who can correctly predict when the first folks will be getting their Nox's in the US.

My prediction is Friday February 16th at 3pm EST. The first YT video will be out at 3:30 that day showing someone unboxing the Equinox(why does anyone think that people want to watch them open their mail is beyond me). I will be taking the day off from school so I can stalk the postman.

  8. I just don't get the anger. You would think an outsider would look at some of the responses on these forums and think we were talking about life and death issues. How dare minelab say that the EQ will obsolete all other VLF detectors! We must go to war with Minelab now to show them that in this day and age all detectors are equal regardless of where the detector came from and it's background. We must realize that whether the detector came on a container ship or in the back of someones trunk they are all the same.

Everything has to be an argument nowadays.

With all the speculation, it is refreshing to see Gerry tell it straight.  That is what I like about this forum, we are all detectorists.  Some have years of experience and many are new like me.  But we love the hunt.  It was 63 degrees today and I swung my Garrett Ace 400 in the yard to enjoy the weather and picked up my 5th silver from my yard, a 1943 Mercury Dime.  All during my hunt time, I was really concentrating on the conditions of the soil and thinking how great it would be when I get to swing my Equinox 800 over the same areas and what will it reveal.  Nothing like the thrill of the hunt.  Thanks for reminding us Gerry why we do it.  Mark

That's awesome you get to hunt in your own yard. I live in a subdivision that is built on fill dirt on my spacious 6000 square foot lot. There is nothing of value in my dirt unless I lost it there.

I've been cleaning out an old park near me once a week for the past month or so and will continue to do so (using my Deus) as I'm curious to see how the Nox will do. I'm digging every signal except for iron so I can see what I've missed when the Nox hits it. I can't wait, I feel like a kid at Christmas time just waiting.

  10. I would be ecstatic if every 18 months a newer, better, more capable machine was introduced by Minelab or any other company. If it could get me more treasure, more rings, more old silver coins, neater relics then I'm all over it even if I have to spend $800-$1000 every 18 months to do it. I am the farthest thing from being brand loyal. I just don't get the angst and worry associated with an item costing $800. Some people are unhinged that ML would intro the EQ while still calling the CTX their top model. Why should they care? If the Nox allows you to swing 8 hours a day it's better than the 4-5 hours the CTX gets most folks due to the weight.

I'm excited the nox is coming and I hope that really soon something even better comes out because it will benefit me doing what I love to do, which is detecting. If I could only detect a few times a year I think I'd find another hobby or just own an ACE 250 and call it a day.

Just 4 ... if I could get out then I'd have the 7 you said.

I misread it but still, 4 rings in a week is still killing it and something to be proud of. I've found 3 rings total so far this year including my titanium yesterday and one 14k earring. I'm just trying to keep up with you Mitchel.

    • Thanks 1
  12. Because instead of 3 rings I got one. It's titanium.

I was out at the beach this afternoon to hunt the squeaker low tide (-.05) and to see how the swell had affected the sand movement. Finally a cut has started to form and sand is headed back out to sea. My third signal on the Excal II and you could immediately tell it wasn't a coin. Bingo its a ringo. I wish it was gold but any ring is fun to find so i'll take it.

In other news it sure seems like someone is seeding the beach with zincs. I dug many nearly new zincs today and only a few aluminum balls. Usually this beach will give me 25-30 aluminum balls of crap per couple of hours of work and I dug only 4 today. I did dig a quarter at nearly 18" on the excal which is pretty deep for what we do here.

Since I got the ring early on all I could think about was matching Mitchel. Instead I harvested zincs all afternoon.  By the way the waves were big today and the tide was sneaky. I got a little wetter than I had planned today.

  13. I dug this the other day at a site that is 80-100+ years old in terms of when it last had houses on it. It's around 6" tall and I think it's brass. It looks familiar enough that I should know what it is but I can't figure it out. Any help appreciated. It has a threaded end on the bottom and an ornamental cap on the top.

    Thanks

    Hey Skate

You May be right on the price being Steve said something about it’s a smart coil.

I may ask Minelab if they got one not so smart cheaper.

Well that’s cheaper than that new coil for the 7000 at 15 hundred. So 199 sounds real good right now .Haha

    Chuck

If the coil is more than 25% of the actual detector then it better be a "smart" coil or it may be that I'm a "stupid" detectorist for paying that much.

Just maybe by the time the Sun goes down Tuesday we’ll all know the price of the 6” coil to go with the Equinox .

I know it’s other items we want the price of but I’ll take it anyway I can get it.

    Chuck

The 6" is what i'd like to add for sure but cost will be a factor. I'm thinking the price will be $199 per coil.

  16. I paid mine upfront. My dealer was hesitant to do it but I've bought from him in the past and i trust him completely so when I could take care of it i did. It was my idea not his. I didn't look at it as an interest free loan because I'm buying. I do know some people who put their names on every dealer they could find pre-orders list and are going to take the first one they get and let the rest go. Personally I think that's wrong but there seems to be a lot of situational ethics involved in detecting especially when it comes to buying one.

  17. I think Fenn's idea of a treasure hunt is awesome. Hunting and searching for potentially 5 million gold SHOULD involve some risks. The fact that people die or have been injured is a part of life. The sheriff needs to stick to protecting and serving against crime and leave the treasure issues to someone else. I just wish I had the time and the brains to figure it out myself.

Next thing you know we're going to see a group protesting Oak Island because the legend says someone else has to die in order for the treasure to be found. Then we'll have a group calling for Expedition Unknown to change their name to Expedition Somewhere so people aren't afraid to watch the show.
