  1. Yup, less is more.   When I first got the Manti I would run as close to max power at club hunts.  A few people would complain that they couldn't get within 50 ft. of me before their machines would pick up the Manti.

I've since toned things down.  Depending on soil conditions I run between 4 and 14 sensitivity and 4 recovery.   Yesterday I dug a copper penny at 10".  Sensitivity was 8 or 10.  (I was hoping for a silver dime)

It is a great machine, and I find myself going back to parks that have been hunted out.  And occasionally I am recovering a wee bit of gold that has been missed.

  2. Got out today to hit an old park in Calgary.  You could say it's hunted out.  Club hunts and the chance of recovering some early silver have caused good finds to be few and far between.   So, a good test for the M8.  IMG_20240408_122505_054.thumb.jpg.439f18df4c4525e60066fc6612a0f22a.jpg

  3. Don't know about Florida beaches and haven't been to any west coast beaches yet.  However, my last three hunts before it froze up were done with the prospecting sound scheme.

Lots to learn in that mode but all three hunts were successful in finding silver and gold rings!

As noted, it will be nice to be able to discern foil from precious metal targets.  More time is needed with these settings.

The Manticore has been a game changer in my recovery record in 2023.

10 gold rings, 14 silver rings, 31 non precious rings. 2 silver chains, 5 silver earrings.  One gold charm.

  4. You know, I was thinking.

If they release an update before Christmas that solves all issues it has... Make it out perform Deus II where the Deus shines, and have a new button function that pulls the  target out of the dirt for you.

I might be able to put my nose back in joint, before Christmas 🤪

  5. Hi KDX,

Try lowering recovery speed to 4 or 5, sensitivity between 16 and 19.  I usually am on LC and have been using prospecting audio.  Takes some getting used to the sounds but I do believe the audio helps to identify the core sound of your target.  You will find an extreme difference between bottle caps and modern Canadian clad.  Our clad has way less pronounced iron or bass tones.  Also new quarters are scratchy sounding like a rusted through tin can.  Dimes are almost impossible if you are discriminating.

    Hope that helps!

  6. My soil conditions change too quickly.  I gave up manually ground balancing years ago with the Equinox.   I just remember how many times that I re-balanced my Tesoro to go over ground just detected and was actually successful in recovering something interesting.

  7. Interesting.  I tried prospecting mode a couple times.  Too much garbage or iron where I detect.  Will have to try it more in the spring.

As for pennies.  I have had days when the ground is soft.  That I have dug 500 pennies.(I really did count them.) There are some school yards in Calgary that make your detector's signal sound like a machine gun.

    Thanks for the tip!

  8. Officially my season just came to an abrupt end due to weather.

An observation that I've had; and wondering if anyone else has come to the same conclusion.

The large gold rings that I have recovered this year have had TIDs of 51, 61 and 69.  The 51 is usually outside the range of zinc pennies but depending on oxidation of target and soil mineralization it fits.

The 2d screen is the game changer.  Yes I can hear the difference in smoothness of sound between gold and zinc most of the time.  When in doubt check the screen. Fresh zinc always gets dug because the trace shows no bleeding.

This is why you dig pennies! Just the fat ones...😀  Thoughts?

  9. Thanks for all the compliments.  I believe the wind storms that we've been having have really churned the sand up.  This ring was found in about 6" of soft sand.  The inside of it was packed with clay...  now  cleaned out.  Makes me wonder if there's more treasures waiting to be recovered. Lols

And that big yellow stone is a topaz, there's an inclusion you can see under magnification.   Absolutely no scratches or chips on the surface.   I have no idea what the other stones may be.  Ideas?

  10. We've had a lot of wind storms from the north pushing the sand around. As for the water level; been pretty dry this summer. Lake started off  about a foot lower than last year. Which doesn't help.

The hunt only lasted about 4 hours.  When I started coming across other detectorist diggings, I knew it was time to go.
