I am still unclear what threshold does on this machine, and what it actually changes in terms of signal quality and machine response to target. It does not seem to act in the way I understand the term so I am unsure how to actually use it to make the MDT do what I want it to do. That seems true in some of the other controls too, everything is a little different, but they are easier to see the result of in real time. Can anyone make sense of this for me in real terms?

To me it’s gain.   Reduce it and you filter out weak targets.  It seems to affect modulation much like gain does on an explorer.   I believe most think we just have two sensitivities.

  2. I’ll mention this again.  There is a 12” coil cover now for those that really like them.  $15 or $20 I don’t remember.  But Dimitar says the type of epoxy used you really don’t need it.  It’s a bit more durable than even the standard coil cover.

I’m still uncertain as to what it’s water rating is.  If it’s not currently considered for warranty purposes as water proof that a must have for beach hunters.

  3. Cliff… interesting thought to have AM give two tones.  That would certainly eliminate the need to flip back and forth from AM to Disc.  It would be a killer if it had 5 tones.  But… is that to many tones with just 30 non-ferr digits?   To me in the water having really deep target like aluminum upscale doesn’t affect my gold range. However there is a learning curve since some targets wrap around (iron) and upscale…. so working on that would help.

  4. I was talking to Dimitar this morning.  Hes looking for input we'd like to see for the NEXT MDT.   The current MDT is what it is.  So hes not doing any special mods.  But he is wanting to get ideas.  Couple of mine

    1.  Change the tone to a more standard tone.  Huge difference in the water because they would be a bit better separated and longer.

    2.  reduce the size of the lower and middle shaft ... more a standard size.  Much like SteveG did.

    3.  Add a bit of rubber under the cuff because in the water it shifts from the torque.

    4.  Allow a bit more time when doing adjustment before it switches back.

    5.  I dont use the PP switch, but would like to have an easier way to toggle from AM to Disc when reverse disc. and have that button a bit larger.

    6.  Move the direction of the headphone connector so the cable goes over the shaft.

    7.  change the angel of the handle, my hand tends to slip up and pushes on the box.

    8. See if we can get the 12khz to work in the water or a multi freq.

Feel free to add yours and they will be passed on.  Im hoping some of these will be added to the NEXT machine.

  5. That’s the issue….. depth especially in the water is such a guess.  Even one scoop we may think wow 11” on that ring…. while it could just as easily been 4”.  Sometimes we get a hint by volume of the target…. but even they you have to ensure your target is centered on the coil.  Cliff mentioned once to me he was surprised when snorkeling how many targets could be on the outside of the coil when fanned.   I also never assume I’m getting the same depth in the water as the wet sand.  It takes a bit of an effort… and a mask to get out there and test depth… especially when comparing two machines.  The MDT IMO is one of the best water machines I’ve used.  I’ll have to get more time with Cliff as he tweaks his new toy

Did either machine TID at that 14" depth, or was this an " it could be heard" at that depth?

You know, I’ll have to say I didn’t check for TID.  So tone.  It would be iffy at best until you took off some sand.  But that’s how we both hunt…..FIND a target.. a really deep target take a scoop if needed to get a better read.  It may waste a little time but we do it pretty quickly.

Thomas impressive on the chain.  Those things really excite you especially hanging off a scoop.  We all know there is acceptable loss with any machine….. takes awhile to have some idea just what you might miss.

Cliff I’m bringing more fishing line and hook next time 😂

BOOM, nice job!  When are you going to buy a Deus 2 so I know what breaks on it????

Ha ha ha…. I’m still on the sidelines for the Deus.  Hunting tomorrow with a friend and hopefully do a little testing with it.  Plus get my hands on it for a bit.  We will be checking some targets.   Not quite been enough reliable info on how it’s doing in the water yet…. Everyone seems to be getting and refining their settings.  I don’t see it as the perfect water machine based on how it’s made …. but seems to be gaining popularity for beach hunting.   By summer we should have a better handle on the overall machine and it’s performance.   I’m guessing you might not want it as a backup machine because of price and staying on top of the learning curve.  I like new machines but I’m not certain it will out perform the MDT in the water and the MDT I’ve learned and find it simple like the Xcal.

  8. Thanks Steve.  I alway use a piece of dental floss when using the magnet…. and it a GOOD magnet… it will rip your pants off near a car 😂.  You are right you get a slight nudge or twist toward it.  Can’t say I’ve gotten any SS that didn’t do that.  Also I’ve not seen that high grade SS turn color like this either.  I’m ok with there not being many MDTs on my beaches.

  9. I offered to help find a ring …. which I didn’t find.  But you get that when people THINK they know where they lost it.  It was dry sand so I moved on out in the water.  I picked up some tiny targets… high conductors just to show even in the salt water the machine does well.   The one chunkier is 10.5 grams the other who’s stones are junk is 2 grams both 14k.  The odd piece is the one with 24 on it.  It has a CB on the back and both test strong for 14k. I use an earth magnet to test for SS…. NADA so I’m not certain what it is….. oh well.  6 hours in the water …. Pure fun.  By the way those tiny targets take effort when ya have a scoop with 1/2 holes.  Again a learned skill.

  10. Thomas… you got you a new toy I see 😂.   Where’s the penny…. Midrange bottle cap, tiny foil, and nickel fall?  By summer I’ll see more posts around here of the machine in the water…. and just what they find.   I don’t pay a lot of attention to depth …. Rarely is anyone out there with a tape measure and PPer.  But … you definitely get a feel for how it’s doing and the proof is always in the pouch.  Most targets tested are found targets…. I keep a couple around that are extremely difficult to hit or not at all for testing.   Cliff …. This dang weather give us a break I’ll come up and follow you around the beach…. Maybe drop a ring in a hole or a gold chain near the water buddy.

  11. We will see as time goes on how well these multi use machines work and how durable they are for beach hunting….. AND if they can get anywhere close to the depth the MDT can IN the salt water.  Like I said I’m down to just the MDT now….. looking for a backup but not willing to pull the trigger on a second yet.  I guess I still believe in a single use machine.  As far as Keith….. it was a shame he’s left the forums.   The latest and greatest always gets the press while people sort it out and make choices.  Videos are a must now days.

  12. Its fairly simple to order a M8 adaptor which can be added to most water phones.  I do use Tonys phone.... but i have a pair with speakers as well.   I like the modulation Tonys gives but some like all targets to sound about the same and louder.... which speakers do.  Modulation thou gives me better sizing ability.  Brian from Jersey Shores FB page recently mentioned Thresher headphones for the Nox.... could be modified as well

  13. That tone change is night and day.  We suggested when running AM it be a two tone, but was told there werent going to be any changes to the tones.  Ive sold all my machines but the MDT..... BUT ive not bought a second one even thou i like the machine until i see what might be next..... definently some improvements could be made.  I suspect the cost of a start up is HIGH so only so much can be done on accessories or mods.   Just glad you are healthy.... and glad the videos are out there again.

  14. Here’s my coil ear adjustment.  I noted someone mentioned the coil cover.  They can be a bear to get off.  If that standard is as tuff as the 12” you don’t need that cover.  This com from a guy that can distroy a cove in about 6 mos. if I don’t put loctite marine epoxy on it.

Dew,   To combat coil flip you might want to consider modifying the coil & lower shaft to accept the slightly larger bolt that NM uses on their detectors. It has a superior bolt head & wing nut design that tightens well. A very simple upgrade to the only weak point I have found on the Tarsacci.

I dont know that i need that ...."i got a guy" lol, who made me a few industrial grade coil ear strengtheners.  I also have my ears moved to the center of the coil similar to the 12".   This is very balanced and took away a lot of coil flip.

  16. I don’t believe you can go wrong with the standard.  I’ve switched back using the standard for winter hunting. In the water it’s quieter does well on smaller gold like this earring (1.4 grams 14k) IN the water.  Not crazy where the coil ears are located in the surf you get a little more coil flip.  Don’t discount the depth this coil gets and PPing is very good.  I highly recommend SteveGs shaft…. Those locks are crazy good and it fits the upper well.  Less displacement in the water.

  17. Yes I reverse disc because I can’t see the screen.  If I can see the screen no need.  This machines reacts very much the way an Xcal does in PP mode.  I ignore a good many of those Coronas when I can read the screen.

I know Tony very well and got the first pair he made for sell for the Nox to test.  I gave him the type of connector on the MDT so he could do me a pair.  I have like 4 pairs and even traded one to a friend.  Iv NEVER had a problem with them either.

there’s a big advantage hunting in AM especially if you can see the screen.

  18. I hunt in AM.  I run -30 disc when I reverse disc to check targets.  I first tried to notch +27 which broke up the iron that wrapped around.  -30 tended to bring most back into the ferr range.  There are days I ignore iron and any targets 13 and above.  On some machine I’ve noticed the size of the ring affected the TID but the MDT seems to read the metal better I think.  What I also like is bottle caps.  There seems to be 3 types … iron, those in the 10 range and this above a quarter with copper.  Pretty easy to figure out once you ignore two of um and the other will give you a high and some iron chirp tones.
