  1. Thanks Steve, I was in the Default gold 1 mode, I will back the sensitivity down and see how that does. I will re-read all the detecting tips i can find for the equinox as well. Thanks again!!
  2. So i got my Nox and have messed around a little bit with it. Main question i have is that if i am hunting for relics and coins, but the soil is highly mineralized (there is a gold prospect on the property and I pan gold from the soil, and there are tons of magnitite crystals free and in the rock matrix) what is the best mode to use, Field since target are spread out or Gold since the soil is so mineralized? There is an old road that cuts right past the old prospect pits. Most the ground i will hunt has the possibility of gold as well as relics lol. The ground here gives the monster issues with hot rocks, the gpx does fine. While there is fine gold in the overburden i have yet to find anything big enough for a detector to locate. Another question: a few of the hits i got with the 800 jump between negative numbers and 11 to 15. Ive attempted to dig these and cannot locate anything, and when i bring the gpx over it has no hits. So i understand negative numbers are generally hot rocks. But ive played around with some of my gold and most of the medium sized nuggets 1 to 4 gram ring up right around 11 to 15. So i keep chasing what? Hot ground?? Any insight is appreciated.
  3. That was found with the GM1000. In this post i said hopefully the first to find a nugget on the East Coast the Equinox.
  4. Thanks guys! Maybe I will be the first guy to find a nugget with the Nox on the East Coast lol. Not that many people are looking for nuggets with detectors out this way haha.
  5. So after reading tons of material on the Equinox 800 and debating the purchase in my head for awhile, i finally decided to pull the trigger. So it will be my third detector the other two being a gpx4800 and a GM1000. I primarily prospect and i feel that the Nox will do two things better prospecting wise compared to the other two detectors, the first thing is hunt trashy tailing piles that have potentially large nuggets, the second is river hunting where i know a gold bearing vein crosses the river that has produced multi ounce nuggets from the old mines adjacent to the river. Ive also been scared to use the gpx for creek hunting much in areas with more overburden, id hate to drop it in the water, so im hoping the Nox can punch through deeper overburden and find gold with its larger coil in the creek. I also have enjoyed beach hunting and coin shooting in the past with my pap, and it will be nice to have a detector that does those things well. Im sure my girl friend also wouldnt mind more trips to the beach vs trips to the middle of the tick and chigger infested woods lol. I will post some of my finds once i get it and get out there with it.
  6. Thanks for all the input guys! kiwijw - There was a hard rock mine a short distance up the main creek. The valley was also intermittently placer mined. Funny thing is that up around the hardrock mine area ive found more placerfied gold and my spot a half mile down stream from the mine produces crystalline gold when dredging the creek. Ive metal detected the hillsides all around the creek where I get the crystalline gold with both the gpx4800 and the gm1000 and found nothing. Its been a weird puzzle that wont come together lol. The main creek has lots of exposed bedrock but ive detected a good bit of it and found nothing. The bigger gold only seems to reside under deeper overburden in this creek, and exposed bedrock areas tend to be blowouts. Ill post some pics of the different types of gold from this creek. first four are from half mile down stream from the hard rock mine, all found dredging. The placerfied one is from up closer to the hard rock mine. Let me know what insights you guys have.
  7. Finally found my fist Virginia picker with the GM 1000 on the private land that i have access too! This is my first piece of detected gold from here. Ive found lots of nuggets dredging the creek but nuggets have eluded my detecting efforts. I found this one in a small feeder creek. I have since detected most of the feeder and found nothing else. I still have yet to find any pickers or nuggets outside the creek at this location which is frustrating to say the least. I also run a GPX4800 outside the creek but no dice still. Up to 12 gram nuggets found dredging in the creek but nothing outside of it. One of these days lol.
  8. I use LIDAR all the time here in Virginia to be able to see all the old mine sites. It gives you the ability to see where the old timers were focusing their workings. That way you can focus on specific areas once you get out in the field. Lets you maximize your time in the field. I can make them using the available data online for most the east coast and parts of the west including the Lake Tahoe area of California. It looks like lots more will become available to the public over the next few years. It just the matter of finding all the data and having/knowing how to use the right programs to turn it into something useful. It is a fantastic tool that all prospectors should use. I've found a few undocumented gold mines/prospects in my area using it.
